In loving memory of Dean Jones, a much beloved member of the Midnight Runners Community who sadly passed a few days after this recording. Ben Palmer joins the podcast in the first of a new regular series of check-ins where we dive into his and Tom's latest adventures—and misadventures. As a highly skilled runner and founder of Trailside Coffee, Ben brings the perfect blend of insight and humour to which I know will be a great addition to the podcast. We also discuss Tom's recent cycling tour across Europe, where he passed through 9 countries across 29 days. But while his photos and videos may have looked great, did he really enjoy it? And finally, we check in with two podcast alumni who are on their own incredible journeys. Remarkably, he believes he could have extended this extraordinary feat of human endurance "indefinitely." Yet, looking back, things could have played out very differently. In the early 2000s, Sean was an unhappy school portrait photographer. We'll dissect his unique mindset, the resilience that fuels him, and the guiding principles that shape his life.Today, Sean will share insights on embracing massive challenges without fear of failure, his approach to life's hurdles, and how he manages to keep pushing when the body screams stop. We'll also dive into some of his most memorable adventures and the philosophies that drive him, and why it's important to set audacious goals.Prepare to be inspired by a story of true grit and adventure. Whether you're an athlete, an entrepreneur, or simply someone who loves a good challenge, Sean's story is a testament to what we can achieve when we dare to push beyond boundaries. After all, “Adventure isn't all about climbing mountains or rowing oceans. It's said a light has gone out in County Clare with the death a pioneering music educator. Musicians from this county and beyond have been paying tribute to the legendary Dysart native Frank Custy whose funeral is taking place today. Although it seemed he'd follow a sporting path instead of a musical one early on, Frank Custy is credited as one of the most pivotal figures in the promotion of Irish traditional music in Clare of the last 60 years. Starting life in Dysart, Frank trained as a teacher at St. Patrick's College in Drumcondra and after a stint teaching in Eglish, County Offaly, moved back to Clare where he took up a position at Toonagh National School. It was there that Frank began what would become a key aspect of his legacy; teaching music in the classroom and eventually holding regular evening group classes which all were welcome to attend. Among the illustrious musicians who honed their craft under Frank's tutelage are Sharon Shannon, Siobhan Peoples, Sean Conway, Yvonne Casey and James Cullinan. Former teacher at St. Flannan's College, musician and educator Gary Shannon says Frank's gift was his ability to teach people how to derive enjoyment from playing music. Many cite Frank's "Céad Poirt" booklets, and later accompanying CDs, as their gateway into Irish traditional music. Music aside, he was also a successful hurler in his day, winning the Minor A Championship with Ruan in 1953 at the age of 14, winning the Harty with St. Flannan's and also being part of the Ruan teams which won the county championship in 1959, 1960 and 1962. For his many achievements, he was honoured with a MÓRglór Award in 2016. Clare FM West Wind presenter Joan Hanrahan, who acted as MC on the night of the award ceremony, says his incorporation of music into the classroom schedule was "groundbreaking".

There's nothing I love more than tales of ordinary people accomplishing extraordinary things. But nobody who achieves the extraordinary is ordinary—and while upon first glimpse this real-life Forrest Gump may present as an everyman, he is anything but. Not only did today's guest dare to best one of the world's most impressive endurance records, he downright decimated it—and somehow made it all look ‘easy'. In 2021, the Iron Cowboy James Lawrence completed 101 iron-distance triathlons in 101 consecutive days—a record I both witnessed and couldn't fathom being broken in my lifetime. And yet not too long after, Sean Conway, a dad of two young kids from a small town in Wales by way of Zimbabwe, proceeded to complete 105 consecutive iron-distance triathlons, claims he could have kept going, and believes he could have done 200. In case you don't quite grasp the enormity of this feat: Sean swam 2.4 miles, then proceeded to ride 112 miles on his bike, then ran a full marathon—26.2 miles, repeating this routine every day without missing a single day, for 105 days in a row. Moreover, Sean didn't even begin his endurance career until age 30—a career in which he has quietly eclipsed more records than most realize. Today we unpack Sean's extraordinary accomplishments, his 'terrier mindset', the 'ten pillars of endurance', why he doesn't celebrate small wins, his unique lens on failure, and his reasoning for never, ever having a backup plan. Sean is quirky, totally authentic, and chock-full of ludicrous stories lifted from a life that prioritizes adventure over security. My hope is that his example inspires you to transcend self-imposed limitations and craft a challenge that is meaningful to you. Because we're all capable of transforming our lives from ordinary to extraordinary. Ultra-endurance athlete Sean Conway, born in Zimbabwe, has been the subject of documentaries aired on Discovery and Amazon Prime. He is the author of six books and a highly sought-after motivational speaker.Multiple world record holder Sean has:Cycled the length of Britain. Sailed the length of Britain. He's swam the length of Britain. He's cycled across Europe. He's run the length of Britain. He's cycled from London to the Alps. He completed a 4,200 mile long Ironman.Another time, he cycled around the world. And, in perhaps his biggest and most recent challenge yet - and I've not even listed half of them - Sean broke the world record for the most consecutive Ironman triathlons in a row. He did an Ironman every single day for 105 days.I contextualise this in the interview with some actual figures, but that means Sean swam 2.4 miles. And then, after that swim, he cycled 112 miles. And then, after that cycle, he ran a marathon. He did that every day, for 105 days. I visited Sean in the beautiful rural North Wales - by myself and without my usual production support! - where he lives with his wife Caroline and their two young children. We chatted about life, his accomplishments, his drive - and believe me, there aren't many people with the single mindedness Sean has.Follow him on Instagram @seanconwayadventure and on Twitter @Conway_Sean. What mindset do you need to do 105 Ironman in 105 days? What do you do if you get injured in day 65? What are techniqiues he used that you can adopt into your life? Sean Conway is a Zimbabwean ultra endurance athlete and motivational speaker. He is best known for his remarkable feats of endurance, including becoming the first person to swim the length of Britain. He just did a world record with 105 full Ironman in 105 days. Conway's journey into the world of endurance challenges began in 2008 when he embarked on a cycling trip around the world. This epic adventure took him across Europe, Asia, and the Americas, covering a distance of over 16,000 miles. During this expedition, Conway faced numerous challenges, including extreme weather conditions, physical exhaustion, and encounters with wildlife. Inspired by his cycling journey, Conway set his sights on even greater challenges. In 2013, he attempted to become the first person to swim the length of Britain. This grueling challenge involved swimming approximately 900 miles from Land's End to John o' Groats. Despite facing treacherous weather conditions and battling fatigue, Conway successfully completed the swim in 135 days, setting a new record. In addition to his swimming and cycling achievements, Conway has also completed other notable endurance challenges. These include running the length of Britain in 2015 and cycling across Europe in just 24 days in 2016. His determination and resilience have earned him recognition as one of Britain's most accomplished endurance adventurers. Conway's accomplishments have not only pushed the boundaries of human endurance but have also inspired others to pursue their own dreams and overcome obstacles. Through his motivational speaking engagements and media appearances, he shares his experiences and encourages individuals to step out of their comfort zones.
Can you imagine completing an ironman triathlon, only to complete another one the next day. And another the day after, and another again after that, for months at a time? This was the life of Sean Conway, all in a bid to set the record of the most consecutive iron-distance triathlons in a row. The previous record, set in 2021 by James Lawrence, stood at 101 days. Sean smashed this record, continuing on to day 105, setting a new world record for 105 full distance triathlons in 105 days with no days off. Sean is a professional endurance athlete, who is no stranger to endurance triathlons. He's the only person to ever complete a triathlon of the length of Britain - swimming, cycling and running between Lands End and John O'Groats. And in this conversation he breaks down how he was able to achieve his record breaking feat. We discuss Sean's 11 Pillars of Endurance, we talk about how he overcame the failure of his first attempt a year before. We discuss the state of sponsorship for athletes, what Sean would do differently again, how he plans to keep challenging himself on 'shorter' stuff going forwards and why we should all buy his postcard! In this episode, we have eight lessons from Ultra Endurance, taken from eight separate guests that have appeared on the show. First up, we have Mark Beaumont, ultra-endurance adventurer and multiple world record holder, who discusses how sometimes people over plan, rather than just going out there and building their trade. Next, we listen to Sean Conway, ultra-endurance adventurer, explain how he has dealt with the setbacks in his career and various strategies that have helped him to overcome them. Jonny Pain, ultra-endurance athlete and coach, explains his experience of dealing with the fear and anxiety leading up to an event and how his experiences have influenced his life as a father and a husband.Kris King, ultra-runner and race director, outlines how being honest and fallible is crucial for success and how ultra events refine us as a person. Paul Minter, who ran 5000 miles around Great Britain, talks about how his experience of Ultra running has reinforced that no matter how bad things are, we can get through them if we keep going. Flora Beverley, ultra athlete and businesswoman, describes how she got into ultras and the value of beating your own personal bests rather than comparing yourself to others. Alex Staniforth, adventurer and ultra-endurance athlete, talks about how the body can endure so much and how ultras have helped him to transform his mindset. Finally, Rupert Guinness, ultra-endurance cyclist, discusses how ultras should be seen as a privilege, not suffering, and how he's dealt with the failure of not completing Race Across America. Expect to learn what it takes to do an ultra-endurance event. Expect to think differently about setbacks. Expect to be motivated. Join The Modern Mind mailing list

Imagine spending 110 days swimming 900 miles along the length of the UK. Would you quit? What challenges would you encounter? What would keep you going? Jasmine Harrison, 23-year-old, and the first woman to swim the entire length of the UK from Land's End to John O' Groats, shares her inspirational experience of her incredible and challenging adventure. Jasmine discusses the low points, how she dealt with them, and what she learnt about dealing with challenges. Only two people had previously swum from Land's End to John o'Groats: Ross Edgley, who in 2018 was the first and fastest Briton to complete the swim in 61 days, and Sean Conway, who accomplished the feat in 2013. Not unfamiliar with epic events Jasmine is also the youngest woman to row solo across the Atlantic. On December 12, 2020, after 70 days at sea, she crossed the finish line of the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge. When reflecting on the main challenges she encountered, Jasmine highlights the importance of having a team that is all aligned to the same purpose and goal, and how communicating openly and honestly with your team members is vital in order to unite your team.
