What's our individual responsibility when we see atrocities happening in our world? That question is the central premise of the film “Small Things Like These,” which sheds light on Ireland's infamous Magdalene laundries. Set in a small Irish town in 1985, the film stars Cillian Murphy as Bill Furlong, a coal merchant and father of five girls who discovers that the local convent in his community is forcing the young women in their care to live under inhumane conditions. We revisit Cillian's conversation with Tom Power about the film, why he didn't want to portray his character as a hero, and what life has been like for him after winning an Oscar for “Oppenheimer” earlier this year.

Happy Monday!
For episode 174, I'm joined once again by my co-hosts Myles Hughes and Steve Prusakowski. This time around, we take a mild break from Oscar nomination chatter to answer some questions, finish Joey's January, and do an Oscar recalibration. Plus, I give my thoughts on Argylle (reviewed here) and Lisa Frankenstein (my rave comes next week), along with the few Sundance Film Festival titles I took in. It's a loose episode, but still a very nice and beefy one, overall... As always my friends and faithful listeners/readers, I do hope you all enjoy the latest episode of the Awards Radar Podcast, our 174th one to date (here's to many more). Of course, feel free to revisit the previous installments by clicking the Podcast tab (here) on the top of the page. Plus, listen to us on Apple Podcasts (iTunes), Spotify, and other platforms. We've got ourselves a new winner!!! And just like we predicted, The Daniel's Everything Everywhere All at Once took home the grand prize at the 95th Academy Awards. But none of that matters. What truly matters is the placement our 4 experts give the film against all of the other Best Picture Winners. This one's got a pretty good chance... The concept of race is a touchy topic in America. So, too, is family dysfunction. In this week's show, Dan Webster, Nathan Weinbender, and Mary Pat Treuthart will be discussing two movies that explore both Black life in America and how family turmoil isn't confined to any single racial group. First up is the big-screen offering “Creed III,” followed by a streaming choice, titled simply: “Bruiser.” In addition, they'll offer their reactions to Sunday's Oscar broadcast.
