Howdy, cowpokes! This month I speak with Zoe Boekbinder about their recent songs, "Cut My Heart In Two," and "I Am Yesterday." Both of these songs were produced by Gracie and Rachel, whom I interviewed on my previous podcast, Adobe and Teardrops. Zoe Boekbinder is a veteran, singer songwriter, born in Canada and raised in a string of Buddhist communities on the West coast they have a unique outlook on life. Their latest album Shadow was self-produced and released in November of 2018, but as we'll hear, Zoe has more music on the way. From May, 2010 to December, 2014, Zoe volunteered as a performer and teacher at New Folsom Prison. This music culminated in the album long time gone by the Prison Music Project. In our interview, we talk about the backstory behind the song "I Am Yesterday," confrontation within community, its relation to incarceration, and what really defines queer country music. Zoe's pup makes a special appearance as well, but first, I want to thank the following new Patreon subscribers. Welcome, Michelle, Elliot, Lori Beth, and Claude! You too can support Rainbow Rodeo when you subscribe for as little as $4 a year. You can also advertise on the podcast for a mere $15. Chris Jackson, legendary publisher and Editor-in-Chief of One World, an imprint of Penguin Random House, is here with Valarie Kaur, one of his star authors—or, as he prefers to see his writers, who include Trevor Noah, Ta-Nehisi Coates, Jay-Z, and Mira Jacob, “superheroes.” After all, changing the country is not for the faint of heart, and Chris looks for formidable fighters. Kaur’s unique superpowers as a civil rights activist, lawyer, filmmaker, and author—with degrees from Stanford, Harvard, and Yale—have helped her win policy changes on the multiple fronts of hate crimes and racial profiling, immigration detention and deportation, solitary confinement, surveillance and Internet freedom, and more. But it was her speech in Washington DC at the Metropolitan AME Church in the wake of the divisive 2016 election—a speech where she invited us all to midwife a new nation waiting to be born from the darkness—that catapulted her into the spotlight. It garnered 40 million views and led to this stunning new book, See No Stranger: A Memoir and Manifesto of Revolutionary Love. What an incredible read! Van Jones calls it “a miracle, a blessing, a new paradigm.” Elizabeth Gilbert says: “In a world stricken with fear and turmoil, Valarie Kaur shows us how to summon our deepest wisdom.” I couldn't agree more and couldn’t put it down. Chris Jackson’s list at One World includes some of the most talented writers, humanitarians and activists in the world, including numerous National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize winners. His mission is to bring to the forefront novelists, memoirists, journalists, poets, and artists whose fresh voices challenge or even subvert the status quo and help us reframe how we see our rapidly transforming world. Chris's own writing has appeared in The Paris Review, Callalloo, The Atlantic(.com), and other outlets. You could call Chris and Valarie literary soulmates. Their story, which you’re about to hear, will be a soothing balm for any writer feeling alone and unseen—wondering if and when the rest of their superhero team will ever hear the call. In fact, Valarie had been writing this book for nearly two decades before meeting Chris and had a truckload of journals to prove it. As you’ll see, it was worth the wait! This episode is all about love: Love of ideas. Love for our histories and education—even when interrupted. Love for the systems that support us. And the ones that need to change. It’s also about taking action, even when we’re deeply afraid. Even when all we can do at the moment is love ourselves. Valarie now leads the Revolutionary Love Project, whose aim is to reclaim love as a force for justice in America. I can’t wait for you to get to know her and Chris. My guess is you’ll feel the love. Welcome.PS. To close out this episode, a big thank you, Ani DiFranco and Righteous Babe Records, for allowing us to use a song they produced for this book and the Revolutionary Love movement, coming this fall. It’s aptly called See No Stranger and features Ani DiFranco, Justin Tranter, Ivan Neville, Milck, Raye Zaragoza, Zoe Boekbinder, Princess Shaw, and Gracie and Rachel.PSS. When she was approached about participating in a documentary about You Tube performers, Princess Shaw thought nothing of it. She had been singing on You Tube for years and had built up a respectable following. The documentary, Introducing Princess Shaw, found its way to Netflix. In this episode, Shaw opens up about how excited she was when her You Tube videos were noticed by an Israeli music producer and then his filmmaker friend. She admits that she was going through a deep depression during the taping of the documentary, but still recorded because she saw it as important to her career. She also trusted the filmmaker and music producer to present her story in a way that would inspire others. Shaw is unabashed when she talks about revealing she was a survivor of sexual abuse on film. She tells the truth about her mother’s involvement in the abuse and denial of how she allowed Shaw and her siblings to suffer under the hands of her boyfriend. She says music and her other creative expressions were not what helped her work through her trauma. Speaking out as she did with family and then on camera released some of the silence and secrecy that surrounded the abuse. When she was not talking about it, she was giving it more power. “I am free sometimes,” Shaw reports. “There are times when I sing on stage and I feel like nothing can stop me, like I have let everything go. Then sometimes I get off the stage and that feeling leaves. It’s a process. It’s work I have to do.”

If you ve ever wanted to meet a bunch of amazing New Orleanians, or you want to reaffirm your faith in the plain old New Orleans tradition of having honest to god real conversations and fun with complete strangers, this is for you. YouTube sensation Princess Shaw describes how she got to be the Princess, what it s like to be a star, to travel the world, to come home to New Orleans with no job, to go from being a lesbian to loving men, and what to do when your partner cheats on you. And that s for starters. Desiree Ontiveros has a company called Badass Balloon Company that makes balloons with sayings on them the like of which you can see in the photo, above. Most of the sayings on these balloons will get us axed from whichever respectable podcast app you listen to podcasts on but you get the idea pretty quickly from Desiree s description. When she s not making balloons Desiree dreams of being a sexy assassin, like the original Princess Shaw. If you re not following that exactly, you ll catch on a couple of minutes into this conversation. Matthew Rosenbeck is not Jewish but equally surprisingly he s about 18 Irish. Matthew has been the driving force behind the band The Honorable South, a music booker on Frenchmen Street and a podcast pioneer. Today he s a visual artist with a gallery exhibit and a rising star of sculpture. Andrew Duhon didn t bring a guitar but he did bring his harmonica. Matthew demonstrates his producer skills and masterminds a collaboration between Andrew and Princess Shaw. They come up with a song about cheating that s actually pretty darn good. By the end of these drinks it s hard to discern if Grant is dating Princess Shaw and cheating on her with Desiree or by what method he s going to be killed. Somewhere in another universe in a parallel dimension this conversation is still going on. Photos at Wayfare by Alison Moon. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Presenting Princess Shaw (2015) Samantha Montgomery (Princess Shaw) is a talented singer/songwriter and kind soul whose personality gleams throughout Ido Haar's 2015 documentary (the film we reviewed in lieu of Hester Street because it recently played at the Chicago Festival of Israeli Cinema). The film chronicles Montgomery's day-to-day existence in New Orleans and Atlanta, as well her long-distance collaborations with Kutiman, the Israeli visual artist and musician, which eventually lead her to international travel and fame. Listen to Shoshanah and I gush over Montgomery, talk about her YouTube channel, and discuss whether Kutiman is an opportunist, a sensitive artist, or the victim of Haar's artistic choices as a director. Next Time and Thank You As promised, we'll move onto Hester Street (1975) (IMDb link), directed by Joan Micklin Silver. This is yet another reputed "Jewish classic," though I hear good things (shout out to Mitchell Brown over at The Discreet Bourgeois). Thank you again to the Klezmer Rebs who continue to graciously let us use their music as our theme song. Their website is located here, and their bandcamp site is here. Listen to them! Aaron
Guests are former American Idol season 5 winner Taylor Hicks, who's now the host of the new tv show "State Plate/" and New Orleans singer/actress Princess Shaw chats about her new indie documentary film "Presenting Princess Shaw." Ms. Shaw is the YouTube sensation who was discovered by Israeli producer Kutiman, who discovered her YouTube Channel and offered her the chance to make her dreams come true in the music business.

It's the day of the documentary filmmaker on BEHIND THE LENS this week as we welcome special guests Soren Peter Sorensen and Ido Haar. First up is director/editor/cinematographer SOREN PETER SORENSEN talking up his timely and compelling film, MY FATHER'S VIETNAM. With Memorial Day around the corner, this personal insight into a chapter of American history that fractured the country and dismissed the needs of soldiers, shines a poignant light on Soren's journey to not only document and personalize chapters of American history through the lives of three American soldiers, but to understand his own father better. A first film for Soren, listen as he talks about his learning curve and approaching the making of MY FATHER'S VIETNAM. At the 45 minute mark, Israeli filmmaker IDO HAAR is live talking about his latest documentary, PRESENTING PRINCESS SHAW. A fascinating underlying story about a "wannabe" singer, Samantha Montgomery aka Princess Shaw, and Israeli musician and video maestro Kutiman who, unbeknownst to the subjects, mashes up videos from the world to create new musical works, Ido crosses the globe and genres as he explores and exciting creative and collaborate melding of the arts. Hear excerpts of film critic debbie elias' exclusive interview with LUKE WALKER as he talks about his new documentary AUSTRALIA'S LOST GOLD. Be it truth, legend, myth or a little bit of everything, Walker has been obsessed with the story of Aussie Harold Lasseter who died in 1931 having never revealed the location of a seven-mile vein of gold he allegedly found deep in Central Australia. Numerous expeditions have tried and failed to find the gold, but 80 years later, it has never been found, prompting rumors about Lasseter and "the truth" too numerous to count. Never doubting in his father, Lasseter's son Bob has continued the search and his invitiation to Luke Walker to join him is the jumping off point for this unfolding mystery as Luke then takes the audience along on his own journey of discovery as he taps into that little bit of Indiana Jones, Nancy Drew, the Hardy Boys and Temperance Brennan that lurks within each of us. Plus, hear a little bit from Mike Epps as he talks about working with an ensemble cast. And don't be late to get some insight from director James Bobin and producer Suzanne Todd as they talk about melding the Carrollian, Burtonian and now Bobinian worlds for Disney's new timeless classic, ALICE THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS! http://behindthelensonline.net http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com
