The first 1 More Thing podcast episode of 2023 sees Dave Columbo Jenkins heading west to join the dots and explore the relationship between two of the most important cultural movements to happen in the US and UK in the last 50 years... Hip-hop and jungle drum & bass.No other MC has traversed and fused these two worlds in the way T.R.A.C. has. Entrenched in both movements his entire adult life, his journey spans from his internship at the mighty Def Jam and his role at NYC institution Konkrete Jungle to his current position on the seminal V Recordings imprint as one a prominent voice both live and on recordings. Along the way he's worked with an array of kindred spiris, pioneers and talents including Lewis Parker, Marc Mac and even a young 50 Cent. As he celebrates five years of his album Life In Motion - an LP that features artists from across the globe and still sounds beautiful to this day - T.R.A.C. takes the time to look back over some of these moments, reflect on his dual role in both musical worlds and consider the parallels, crossroads and shared artistic disciplines between the two. With drum & bass jungle enjoying a new exciting wave of energy and innovation in North America, T.R.A.C is now at the forefront of yet another new and exciting chapter. Not just for himself but the whole movement. Both nationally and internationally. With plenty of plans for 2023 and beyond, 1 More Thing catches him at a perfect calm-before-the-storm moment in his career and the next chapter in drum & bass jungle. Like all episodes of 1 More Thing, this session is a seriously inspiring, thoughtful and revealing conversation that will appeal to anyone who has a passion and interest in modern music history, soundsystem culture and breakbeats. This time with a serious dose of MC craft thrown in. Huge respect to T.R.A.C. for giving us the time and insight. Four letters, four dots, let's join some dots... This month's episode of the 1 More Thing podcast sees Dave Columbo Jenkins linking up with another certified pioneer of the jungle drum & bass movement for a deep and meaningful conversation. It's the one and only DJ Storm! Currently in the midst of celebrating 30 years at the forefront of the culture, Jayne Storm takes the time to reflect over her career, explore her strong sense of community and relish in her love for the nerdiest, most intricate details of the DJ craft. From her time on the pirates and her longstanding partnership with the late great Kemistry (RIP) to the ever-changing landscape of the genre via her role and influence on drum & bass institution Metalheadz, Storm goes super deep on this one. Complete with quotes and contributions from other longstanding drum & bass jungle pioneers Marc Mac, Fabio & Grooverider, Loxy and J Majik, this is an interview unlike any other DJ Storm has ever done before. If you're catching this fresh, you can witness Storm's on-going 30 year celebrations at Alchemy on December 23, E1, London as she's joined by some of her nearest, dearest and most influential peers. If you're catching it after that date, don't worry. This is a timeless piece of history that reinforces DJ Storm's role in the thick of that crucial first generation of artists who dug the foundations for everything that has followed. This episode of Hopp on Calls with Kevin Hopp is the last part of the conversation with Marc Mac, Revenue-istician at AmpliFi. They dive into the practice of listening and how cold calling is almost never about buying or selling, but mostly about having genuine conversations.Kevin dives into why pitching to busy people never works while Marc stresses the need to regulate pace, volume, tone, and energy during a cold call. Marc also discusses how opening cold calls and holding the first 5 or 15 seconds are crucial to deepening conversations with prospects. QUOTESUse a framework to open a conversation in 15 seconds - Marc: "It's about that first 15 seconds or first 5 seconds. And I just find, if you have a framework and you really understand what you do, what you're trying to do, or what your product, the problem it solves, and so on and so forth, then it should be very easy to open a conversation." This episode of Hopp on Calls with Kevin Hopp is the first part of the conversation with Marc Mac, Revenue-istician at AmpliFi. Today, they discuss how to call out when a prospect is driving and how sometimes everything in a call can go right but it's still not a good fit. Kevin had to overcome his prospect's first objection by immediately calling out that he was driving and that now might not be the best time to talk. Meanwhile, it turned out that Marc's prospect was the president of a German company's regional office, so it was not a good fit. QUOTESIf it's not a good fit, don't try to set a meeting - Kevin: "Sometimes it doesn't make any sense to set a meeting even if they got on your list, even if you put all the time into doing research, even though you get them on the phone, and even though you had the long conversation, it doesn't make sense to set the meeting." There's an art to asking qualifying questions in a cold call that's significantly different than in discovery. Instead of rapid fire questioning that makes prospects uncomfortable (and hang up the phone), use Tidal's, Marc Mac's, approach of "leading the witness" to engage the buyer, ensure they're a fit, and get them excited about next steps in this week's episode of #FTFFridays.
Marc Mac (4hero) is one of dance music's most influential artists. A pioneer of breakbeat hardcore, jungle D&B, broken beat, nu jazz; one half of award-winning duo, 4hero; instrumental in Goldie's breakthrough; and co-founder of Reinforced Records – regarded as one of underground music's blueprint labels.

March Machlovitz aka Marc Mac is a veteran salesman who has done most of his selling in New York and New Jersey, where people are known to be pretty tough customers who don't buy easily. In this episode, Marc shares sales tips, advice, and wisdom along with interesting anecdotes from over two decades of selling in the toughest and most competitive markets on the planet. Marc is not only a veteran salesperson; he's also a friend of mine. We first interacted on LinkedIn a couple of years ago before meeting face-to-face in a Manhattan Starbucks for coffee. As I recall, I ended up sitting with him for over two hours transfixed as he shared hilarious stories and memorable pieces of wisdom gained from his years of selling everything from furniture to paint to disinfectants. The final best of 2019 show so quality music all the way. Soul from Greentea Peng, Sunday Service Choir, Theo Parrish feat Maurissa Rose. Dancefloor tracks from Dego, Roddy Rod and Marc Mac’s remix of the Zero dB classic. Drum and Bass from Posij, Hedex & Bou. Grime from JME feat Wiley. Big epic music from Octo Octa. Wonderful deep music from Calibre’s latest album (it’s not D&B). Plus plenty more musical treats.
Broken Beat from WheelUP, Yadava and Marc Mac remixing Zero dB. A quality Gospel / Hip Hop track from Stro Elliot. Sampology on the remix of Quantic. A nice and uplifting tune from The Vapor Cave with tempo switches. A great track from the new compilation on Analog Africa of music from Somlia…deep dancefloor Reggae style. Plus plenty more musical treats.
This week's show is heavily influenced by the We Out Here festival that took place last week in the UK featuring music and tunes from lots of the artists and DJs who were playing there. The show starts off with an all time classic from Gary Bartz. Plus we have Soul music from Harleighblu, Yazmin Lacey and Bryony Jarman-Pinto. Jazz from Moses Boyd, Sons Of Kemet and Matthew Herbert. Broken Beat from Marc Mac and WheelUP. Afrofunk from Sean Kuti and Rob. Dancefloor Beats from Ahadadream. A new track from Terror Danjah and Nii-Teiko on Tru Thoughts. Plus a big tune from DJ Krust. Plus plenty more musical treats.
Delays be damned! Episode 5 of The Vocal is up and runnin'. This time, the mighty MC T.R.A.C joins us for a conversation. We talk a lot about his hip-hop foundations, how he got involved in drum-n-bass, race and preconceptions in dance music, and his most recent epic project, a mix with I-Cue called “Next Level Event”, which is one of the funnest (is “funnest” even a word?) mixes I've ever heard. The most striking thing about this interview is how much I didn't ask him. The bright side of that is, a part 2 needs to happen. The first few minutes or so of the interview were conducted via a standard cell phone call, and while it sounded fine at the beginning, the call quality degraded severely until it finally dropped. So, we continued via Skype, and it sounded better. However, the sound quality is still dodgy, something I didn't pick up on because I haven't been wearing headphones during the interviews. Lesson learned. Bear with us, though, because it's an eye opening interview with a guy who, besides being one of the best DnB MC's on the planet, is also a really nice dude. Big up Tylenol Cold and Sinus once again for carrying me through it. As usual, This episode is brought to you by Dutty Bass Audio (www.junodownload.com/labels/Dutty+Bass+Audio), and DnB Refined (www.freshpapercut.com/dnbrefined). Tracklisting: T.R.A.C and Unreal – “Roarganic Symphony” ***INTERLUDE – Code Blue – “Angels in Dub”*** Roni Size and Reprazent – “Share the Fall” (Onallee on the vocal) Ed Rush, Optical, Basim, and Ryme Tyme – “Fast Lane” Jill Scott – “Whatever (Mob Tactics Remix)” Atlantic Connection with Armanni Reign and Tali – “Good Hood Review” T.R.A.C and Calibre – “Blue” Adam F and MC Conrad – “F Jam (Full Vocal Mix)” Valiant Emcee and Will Miles – “Walking (Conrad Subs Remix)” Degs and De:Tune – “Poveglia (Whiney Remix)” Everything But the Girl – “Single (Photek Remix)” Shy FX with Stamina MC and Lily Allen – “Roll the Dice” Peshay – “Vocal Tune” (This tune is a defacto remix of “Love and Happiness” by River Ocean Ft. India) T.R.A.C with Marc Mac and DJ I-Cue – “The Avenue” ***T.R.A.C Interview*** T.R.A.C with Serum and Dynamite MC – “Late Night Connection”
The show starts with the Animanz remix of the Hot 8 Brass Band which is being released for Record Store Day. Deep Broken Beat from Barakas and Marc Mac. The classic Freeform Reform remix of Isolee. Hip Hop from Nipsey Hussle (R.I.P), Freddie Gibbs & Madlib and a classic freestyle from Q Tip and Mad Skills. Soulful Gospel from new Tru Thoughts signing Pieces Of A Man (produced by Zed Bias and featuring Amp Fiddler, Harleighblu and Tyler (Children Of Zeus) amongst others). Plus plenty more musical treats.
A quality track from Anderson Paak from his forthcoming album but starting the show with a great track from Matthew Herbert. New dancefloor music from Quantic, Marc Mac and Bonobo. Left of centre Grime from Flowdan (Produced by Plastician) and Chip (Produced by Lil Silva and Sampha). A wobbly Bass heavy track from Touchy Subject. Drum and bass from Chug and Sl8r. Plus plenty more musical treats.

BANG! @southernvangard #radio Ep 039! Well this weeks mix show was certainly a treat - we had fellow ATLien (by way of Pittsburgh) Buscrates, stop through for an interview as well as our VERY FIRST in-studio DJ guest! After setting the football field on fire at the Steelers/Ram game on Sunday, Boogie Bus hopped on his private jet and flew back to Atlanta in time for a nice chat and to lay down a burner of a 30-minute mix at the end of the show, while DJ Jon Doe kicked things off in regular fashion with the latest hip-hop joints. Hang around for snippets of our interview with Buscrates after his mix, and be on the lookout for the full interview that drops on Thursday! // #download #stream #listen #enjoy // southernvangard.com // @southernvangard on @iTunesPodcasts @stitcherradio @soundcloud @mixcloud // #hiphop #rap #underground #DJ #mix #interviews #podcast #ATL #PITTSBURGH #WORLDWIDE Recorded live September 27, 2015 @ Dirty Blanket Studios, Marietta, GA southernvangard.com @southernvangard on @iTunesPodcasts @stitcherradio @soundcloud @mixcloud twitter/IG: @jondoeatl @southernvangard @cappuccinomeeks Inst. beds by Buscrates 16-Bit Ensemble "Knock Knock" - MED BLU MADLIB feat. The thing about the word incite, spelled, i-n-c-i-t-e, is that, for me, I looked within, emboldened and encouraged by insightful songs - which were made as offerings of individual or collective creativity - and offered to the world as musical works of (he)art. Everything I am is the sum of all my inspirations. (Repeat, with emphasis.) And what I like to incite, is inspiration to aspire to grow and go forth through life, with a passion for the pursuit of happiness - while appreciating how my liberty and freedom to choose how I will pursue all what life has to offer came to be. King sized connotes, simply, the largest, the biggest...the greatest. It is with a King sized love that I offer to you, insightful songs to do expressly, and expressively, what I aim to do: Ignite and incite LOVE. With L-O-V-E, in the 1st hour, we heard music from... Special thanks to Morgan Rhodes, co-DJ/presenter here on WURD, hear her show from 7pm-9pm on Tuesday nights. She told me about the Odetta song, featured during the 1st hour of this episode, that was featured in the film Selma...and she knew because she is the music supervisor for the movie. Part two. More Motown Magic from the Motor City Crates. Marc Mac presents 60 minutes of Motown Dusty Grooves “mixtape style”. All "green light Technics" strictly vinyl. Part One. Without doubt Motown has always been one of my fave labels and truth is you don't have to dig to deep to find Motown gems as it was such a popular label. In more recent times loads of previously unreleased Motown tracks have surfaced solidifying my admiration for the Motown groove. Shout also has to go to the many Hip hop producers that helped in keeping the groove alive through sampling. check it out.

Soul/Jazz Folk singer and guitarist Terry Callier, passed away last week (October 27, 2012) aged 67 after suffering from throat cancer. Terry released a string of enduring and influential albums between the early 60's and the late 80's and enjoyed a creative rebirth during the late 90’s in the UK when his Folk, Soulful music was revived by the acid-jazz movement, and great new albums via Talkin Loud Records and Mr Bongos. Terry's more modern collaborators included Beth Orton, Massive Attack, 4hero, Incognito, Paul Weller and Nujabes. It wasn't just the distinct voice and guitar playing that made Terry so special in his early era but his sometimes radical out-there songwriting skills were picked up by the likes of The Dells, Jerry Butler, Dee Sharp Gamble and The Rotary Connection. Credit also goes to Terry for Spotting Minnie Riperton as she worked as a receptionist at Chess Cadet Records (so the story goes). Some of my personal favorites from Terry is his work with arrangers Charles Stepney and Richard Evans at Cadet records. Enjoy the selection. Rest In Power Terry Callier. Marc Mac

The Soul Arranger (part eight) - H.B. Barnum.Ok here's the lowdown, I hope you enjoy this latest instalment.Producer and arranger H.B. Barnum remains one of the unsung giants of popular music, collaborating with a who's who of acts spanning from Frank Sinatra to Puff Daddy. Legendary music producer and arranger H. B. Barnum, a man who has worked with an extraordinary cross-spectrum of performers, was born Hidle Brown Barnum, Jr. on July 15, 1936 in Houston, Texas. At age four, he won a nationwide talent contest for his singing and piano playing, which launched a film and radio career that included appearances on Amos ‘n’ Andy and The Jack Benny Program. Barnum recorded his first solo album at the age of fourteen as Pee Wee Barnum. He attended Manual Arts High School in Los Angeles, California. In 1960 Barnum scored a Top 40 pop hit of his own with the instrumental "Lost Love," signing to RCA later that year to release his debut LP, The Big Voice of Barnum -- H.B., That Is. Everybody Loves H.B. -- Barnum, That Is trailed in 1961, and while a handful of solo records followed, his performing career gradually took a backseat to his work as a studio arranger and producer. Upon joining Capitol Records in 1965 Barnum's reputation flourished. Often he worked in collaboration with producer and longtime friend David Axelrod, and together they forged an innovative orchestral jazz-funk sensibility much copied and sampled in the decades to come. Barnum's list of studio credits is remarkably long and distinguished, including sessions with Sinatra, Count Basie, Etta James, Aretha Franklin, Lou Rawls, and the Supremes. But for me it was the less know collaborations with the likes of Spanky, Greg Perry and his involvement with the Motown great Holland Dozier Holland. By the mid-'70s Barnum shifted his focus from pop music to television, scoring countless series and specials in addition to composing myriad advertising jingles.career gradually took a backseat to his work as a studio arranger and producer. Ok Chill... kicking off 2012 with a trip to the library. A little mix dedicated to the many great library labels, musicians and composers; Alan Hawkshaw, Keith Mansfield, Alan Parker, Sammy Burdson, De Wolfe, KPM, Sylvester, Conroy Music to name a few. There's 1000's of good lib records worldwide but I would probably have to say that my faves came from London in the 60's & 70's and I think it has a lot to do with the cool production studios in the UK during that time. Funny, as a kid watching UK tv in the 70's & 80's funky grooves always popped on programs even the news & sports programs, I'm pretty sure the musicians would have listened to whatever was cool in the US at the time (Stevie, Herbie and Quincy Jones) then vibed off the influence. Of course library music has become a big and important part of Hip-hop and Beatmaking with producers and DJ's parting with plenty cash and traveling far and wide for a dope track, drum break or sample buried in tons of cheesy wackness. anyway hope you dig. PEACE. Marc Mac http://omniverse-records.bandcamp.com/ http://4hero.co.uk http://www.facebook.com/marcmac4hero

The Soul Arranger (part seven) - Wade MarcusIntroducing some of the Funky, Soulful and maybe a little lesser known works of Wade Marcus. Wade arranged and produced for many great artist from Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross through to Grant Green and Marlena Shaw. Wade also spent time at two of the most important labels of the 60‘s and 70‘s; Motown and Blue Note. What I find fascinating with Wade is his ability to adapt his style and sound depending on the artist he was arranging for so there isn’t a Wade stamp or sound... its just a great sound and his arrangements tend go beyond Strings and Horns. It’s so easy to forget about these musicians and not give them the props there so rightly deserve in fact it's pretty near impossible to find a photo of Wade on the internet. I enjoyed digging and researching Wade Marcus hope you dig too.Marc Mac.Track list Rain Every Thursday - Bobby Hutcherson Sunday Dreaming - The Shirelles Mystic Brew - Ronnie Foster Mercy Mercy Me - Reuben Wilson Congress Alley - Congress Alley Lost In A Pool Of Red - Wade Marcus You And Music - Donald Byrd Keep On Keeping On - Sylvers I Ain’t Got Much - Ellerine Harding Thank You Falletin Me Me Mice Elf - Wade Marcus Thank You Falletin Me Me Mice Elf - Hearts Of Stone Jeremy - Lea Roberts See-Saw - Mel Dancy You’ve Made Me So Very Happy - Hearts Of Stone Let Me Down Easy - Inez Foxx Cosmic Voyager - Johnny Hammond All Around My World - Prana People www.4hero.co.uk
