My guest today is a woman who has truly come into her own in middle-age. A broadcaster, engineer, statistician and entrepreneur, at the age of 63 Carol Vorderman is now best known for fearlessly calling power to account. Sick of the sleaze and corruption she saw emanating from our politicians she decided it was time to speak up. And her million twitter followers and listeners to her LBC show listened. Why? Because she's one of us. An ordinary kid from a working class background, brought up by a single mum in North Wales. Sydney Moore is a Division 1 Volleyball player at Syracuse University pursuing her master's in marketing. Before Syracuse, Sydney was a senior captain at Cornell University where she majored in psychology with a focus in neuroscience and human development. Her initial love was basketball but as the pressure increased, her confidence decreased and her motivation to improve became fear based, she found volleyball as a refreshing change. As her understanding of health and wellness grew, so did her interest in pursuing information for herself and others. Sydney created a video podcast titled, “Let's Talk About It” which discusses and advocates for important topics that affect student-athletes such as mental health, gender equity, going pro, and more. In 2022 Sydney was awarded the Billie Jean King Youth Leadership Award at the ESPYs for her work to introduce the Fair Play for Women Act into Congress and was named one of Glamour Magazine's College Women of the Year 2023. Sydney discusses her own process and passion that embodies the characteristics for which she has been recognized including intelligence, bravery, confidence and compassion. She has worked so hard to find her own voice and is using that voice to empower other female athletes. @ssydney.mmoore

Adopted at birth, Ajé loved sharing her adoption story throughout her childhood. She always had a feeling that she had been wanted by her birth parents, and was a tad obsessed with discovering where, and who, she came from. Around age 9, good, old-fashioned snooping led her to a document with clues about her birth parents and the person she would have been if they had kept her. She had no way of knowing that document would later lead to an unexpected, serendipitous, [absolutely impossible] reunion, just in time for her 18th birthday.A survivor of abuse in childhood and adolescence, Ajé has always had a strong conviction that anguish is not meant to be carried alone, and the events that draw us into darkness and despair are the stories that need the most light. She loves conversations about uncomfortable truths and the power that comes from finding one's voice. Ajé is a lifelong craftaholic with a squirrel's attention span and spends a lot of her time making art fueled by sporadic bursts of dopamine, lots of hot glue, and just the right amount of glitter. Her long-term goal is to make her home a multi-media shadow box inspired by her favorite characters & quotes from books, music, and film, one random idea at a time. She lives in Portland, Oregon, with her husband, way too many craft supplies, and her tortoiseshell cat (who is the bestest cat ever). To skip ahead to the interview go to timestamp: 12:55The Girls Who Went Away by Ann FesslerSeptember 7th in Kansas City, MissouriEventbrite: LIVE RECORDED PODCAST with Adoption: The Making of Me (ATMOM) & A PHOTO JOURNEY with Jeff Forney of The Innocent People ProjectYou have a limited offer you can use now, that gets you up to 48% offyour first subscription or 20% off one-time purchases with codeVIPMAKINGOFME20at checkout - You can claim it at: https://magicmind.com/vipmakingofmeRESOURCES for AdopteesS12F Helping AdopteesGregory Luce and Adoptees Rights LawJoe Soll & other adoptee resourcesFireside Adoptees Facebook GroupReckoning with the Primal Wound DocumentaryDr. Liz Debetta: Migrating Toward Wholeness MovementHiraeth Hope & HealingMoses FarrowNational Suicide Prevention Lifeline – 1-800-273-8255 OR Dial or Text 988.Thank you to our Patreons! Vice President Kamala Harris thinks about everything as a lawyer first. That's an observation CNN Senior Reporter Edward-Isaac Dovere has made after many interviews with the Veep. Audie talks with Dovere about how Harris has deployed her prosecutorial skills against Wall Street CEOs, Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, and even President Biden in a debate moment that nearly derailed his campaign. In today's episode, Dawn sits down with mindset coach Renee Reisch to discuss the importance of finding one's voice, and speaking up for oneself. Renee shares her personal journey of resilience, including losing her voice due to a virus attacking her vocal cords. She delves into the impact of past experiences on self-expression, the significance of setting boundaries, and the process of building confidence and self-worth. KEY TAKEAWAYS Renee emphasizes the importance of finding your voice to speak your truth, set boundaries, and show self-value. Renee discusses the need to let go of perfectionism and give oneself grace to take risks and make mistakes along the way. Renee highlights the difference between the highlight reel people often show on social media and the real challenges and hardships they face in their lives. Renee's mission is to elevate the voices of individuals, creating a community where people can share their stories and support each other on their journeys. Renee's personal journey of overcoming obstacles has led her to help others grow through their own challenges, emphasizing the idea of "what we go through, we grow through." BEST MOMENTS "Taking care of yourself? That was the last on the list. It wasn't even the last on the list. It wasn't even on the list. It didn't even make the list." "Through the silence, you can hear the underlying message of what's coming through, the hurt, the pain, the anxiety of what somebody is trying to put out there that they can't even speak about, but it's coming through when you lean in and listen." "Be excited instead of fearful. Fear is your projection into the future of something that didn't even happen yet." "Isn't it nicer to see the glass half full than half empty? Isn't it nice to pour from an overflow than a broken glass?" Local author Kao Kalia Yang is releasing two new books in March. One is a children's book called “The Rock in My Throat” and the second is a memoir called “Where Rivers Part.” Both are personal stories about Kalia's experience as a Hmong person.“The Rock in My Throat” is a true story about when she stopped speaking for many years as a child. She was at the store with her mother when her mom didn't know the word for lightbulb. She asked “for the thing that makes the world shiny.” The clerk didn't understand, and never came back with a lightbulb. That's when as a child Yang began to think that people did not want to hear a voice like hers and became a selective mute. Yang's memoir “Where Rivers Part” is a story about her mother's journey from Laos to the U.S. It is the first book she has written in the first-person. She talked to MPR News host Cathy Wurzer about learning her mom's story, how she found her voice, and the impact her books have had on young Minnesotans.“A Rock in My Throat” comes out March 5th. “Where Rivers Part” comes out March 19th.
