On this week's Talkhouse Podcast, we've got a pair of multi-hyphenates who have recently joined music-world forces: Justin Tranter and Jake Wesley Rogers. Tranter first found music-biz fame with the band Semi-Precious Weapons, which had a decade-long run starting in 2004, and whose biggest claim to fame—besides their music itself—was opening for Lady Gaga's Monster Ball tour. But Tranter pivoted after Semi-Precious Weapons split up, and started writing songs for and with other artists—but not just any artists. Tranter has written for and/or with Justin Bieber, Imagine Dragons, Selena Gomez, Gwen Stefani, and many, many more—chances are good you've heard a Justin Tranter composition on the radio, even if you didn't know it. Tranter has also written a bunch of songs for the upcoming Grease prequel series, Rise of the Pink Ladies, and seven songs on the brand-new album by the massive Italian band Måneskin. Tranter has also been an incredible activist in the LGBTQ+ community and beyond, and their next move is becoming, as you'll hear in this chat, a mogul. That's where the other half of today's Talkhouse Podcast comes into the picture: Jake Wesley Rogers recently signed on with Tranter's new record label, Facet, and the two have plans to conquer the world together—I wouldn't bet against them. Rogers is from a younger generation, having grown up with the instant gratification of social media. He even appeared on America's Got Talent at 15, and started writing songs even earlier than that. But Rogers really finds his voice with a couple of recent EPs, Pluto and Love. Tranter and Rogers also recently co-wrote a song called “Hindsight,” which plays over the end credits of Bros, the first gay rom-com ever released by a major studio—they talk about that here a bit as well. Check out that song below. In this conversation, Tranter and Rogers talk about their daily processes, including The Artists' Way, they talk about great pop songs, great middle school teachers, destroying the patriarchy, and the dangers and joys of social media. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Justin Tranter and Jake Wesley Rogers for chatting. If you like what you heard, please check out all the goodness on Talkhouse.com and subscribe to our weekly e-mail newsletter. This episode was produced by Myron Kaplan, and the Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by the Range. See you next time!

“Over the Rainbow”, “Get Happy”, “Come Rain or Come Shine”. These are the songs you have been singing your whole life, and now is your chance to learn about who wrote them! In this week's episode, travel somewhere over the rainbow into the singular mind of renowned composer Harold Arlen, a key contributor to the American Songbook whose hundreds of pop tunes became runaway hits during the 1930s, ‘40s, and ‘50s. Arlen collaborated with the greatest of the Tin Pan Alley lyricists, including E.Y. "Yip" Harburg, Johnny Mercer, Ted Koehler, Ira Gershwin, Dorothy Fields, and Truman Capote. While any number of Arlen's compositions assured his prominent place in musical history, the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) deemed “Over the Rainbow” to be the 20th century's greatest song. “I Got Rhythm”, “Summertime”, “The Man I Love”. These are the songs you have been singing your whole life, and now is your chance to learn about who wrote them! In this week's episode, the men you love are at the forefront: George and Ira Gershwin, brothers who sometimes seemed to write their hits with four hands and one brain. George's gift for melody and Ira's ability to seamlessly blend lyrical sophistication with the American vernacular made for a plethora of immortal songs that both reflected and shaped the dynamic forces of American modernism during the Jazz Age. Hear directly from Michael Feinstein, Norm Lewis, and more, as they guide you through the astounding lives of these two geniuses, cut from the same cloth.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

In this week's episode, you'll fall freely in love with Cole Porter, the master of melody and lyrics who changed the soundscape and language of American music - and America itself. Writing songs for over 30 stage and film musicals, his best work set standards of sophistication and wit seldom matched in the popular musical theater. “Wouldn't It Be Loverly”, “Get Me to the Church on Time”, “If Ever I Would Leave You”. These are the songs you have been singing your whole life, and now is your chance to learn about who wrote them! This week's episode is guaranteed to be “loverly”, as we dive headfirst into the life and times of Alan Jay Lerner & Frederick Loewe, one of the greatest songwriting teams in history responsible for the most stylish, sophisticated theater music of the 20th century. The Lerner-Loewe formula was to combine Loewe's lush, melodic music, redolent of Viennese waltz, with Lerner's witty, literate lyrics; this they did in some of the most popular and best-remembered musicals of the mid-20th Century, including My Fair Lady, Brigadoon, and Camelot. As told by scholars such as Laurence Maslon as well as Liza Lerner, Alan Lerner's daughter, the origin story of Lerner & Loewe illuminates how their disparate paths converged to form a dynamic duo that would define the future of American musical theater. Vogue Magazine named today's guest, Jake Wesley Rogers, Gen Z's Elton John, but truth is, he is a wildly-talented, 25-year-old singer, songwriter and performer not only dazzles audiences but also stands powerfully in an identity that belongs to no one other than himself. How a queer kid from Springfield, Missouri, went from growing up in the deep South, then studying songwriting in Nashville, TN, to eventually gracing the stages of music festivals like Lollapalooza, headlining for artists like Panic At The Disco! and Ben Platt isn't all that of a mystery once you hear his music—and his story. Jake has this unique way of creating bold, emotional music that tells the stories of his life, yet feels universal at the same time. He invites us all to feel and sing and move and, in no small way, reclaim the parts and stories in our own lives that we've left behind. Elton John, himself, sang Jake's praises while he was a guest on the 300th episode of Elton's Apple Music radio show Rocket Hour, saying Rogers reminded him of himself when he started out. And, all the while, what you'll experience in this conversation, is how deeply grounded, loving, and intentional he is with everything he does.In today's conversation, we dive into Jake's journey in music and life and explore some of the lyrics of his recently released six-song EP Pluto, which has been long-awaited since his signing to hit songwriter Justin Tranter's imprint of Warner Records, Facet Records, in 2020. We unpack the art of songwriting and storytelling and its ability to help us process difficult experiences and explore some interesting asides on identity, finding inspiration, his connection and love for his family, and how important it is for Rogers to keep himself centered and present as the rocket ship that has become his career as an artist takes off. His EP “Pluto” is filled with passionate ballads and poetic lyrics that tell the stories of his most formative years and dealings with love of all forms—from romantic to familial to self-love. And though Jake is early in the years, he's deeply wise, we can all learn something from his outlook not just on storytelling but on gratitude, joy, and taking life in stride. You can find Jake at: Website | Instagram | SpotifyIf you LOVED this episode you'll also love the conversations we had with Justin Tranter about their life in music and creativity and really finding a place of power and beauty and creative expression.Check out our offerings & partners: My New Book Sparked | My New Podcast SPARKEDVisit Our Sponsor Page For a Complete List of Vanity URLs & Discount Codes. Have you ever asked yourself: “Who am I? What do I stand for?” Many of us do ask these questions and when we do, it can be a catalyst that sets us on an alternative path - even though we know it might disappoint those around us. Yet, all too often, even when our inner knowing is forcing us to pay attention, life can pull us in the direction of expectations versus desire. We hesitate to follow our curiosity for fear we might let down our family and loved ones. As a result, we stay on course towards what “we're supposed to do”. But it doesn't always have to be this way. Sometimes choosing the new path is just what we need to honor our voice, culture and family. This is why I'm excited to share this conversation with Connie Lim, whose artist name is MILCK for this Best Of Conversation. MILCK rose to widespread attention after a video of an a capella performance of her song "Quiet" on the street at the 2017 Women's March exploded into the public's consciousness going viral and becoming embraced as an anthem for the movement. That moment and the impact and reach of the song led to a major record deal and collaborations as a songwriter that launched the career she's been working to build for years. But that career almost never happened. MILCK grew up in an enclave of LA, the child of immigrants from China, and was drawn to music from her earliest days. She wrote her first song at 7 years old and studied classical piano and opera. Yet the pressure of intense perfectionism and the expectation she'd eventually leave music behind to follow the family tradition into medicine led her into years of profound emotional struggle. Eventually, she hit a point in college where she decided it was time to choose herself over the expectations of others, as well as the burden of perfectionism that had caused so many years of suffering and harm. MILCK left college and went all-in on music, performing as an independent artist for years, slowly building her name, before that fateful day in 2017 that changed everything. She's now deep into writing, producing and performing her own work, while also writing with and for other artists and focusing on not just sharing her own creative voice, but also gathering community and shining the light on truth and inequity along the way.You can find MILCK at: Website | InstagramIf you LOVED this episode you'll also love the conversations we had with Justin Tranter about their journey through challenging times as a kid growing up and then stepping into the world of music - first as a musician, and then as a powerhouse songwriter and collaborator.Check out our offerings & partners: My New Book Sparked | My New Podcast SPARKEDVisit Our Sponsor Page For a Complete List of Vanity URLs & Discount Codes.Little Stories Everywhere See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
What a treat it was to chat with music producer Esjay Jones. She talks about her frustration with the music industry initially which led her to teach herself music production and Logic and then move into the producing side. She had her first major cut in the U.S. alongside co-writer Justin Tranter in 2013 with the single “I Choose U” by TimeFlies on Def Jam Records. Since then, she has worked with Grey Daze (Chester Bennington), Sean Kingston, Jeffree Star, Olivia Holt, Escape The Fate, Mystery Skulls with Nile Rodgers and Brandy, Alien Ant Farm, and many more.

How do you create a radical change in direction in your life? My guest today, Rosie Acosta, found herself asking that question in her mid-teens, after being arrested, and the answer came in a way she never saw coming. Born and raised in East LA at a time when gang violence was the norm, Rosie pushed up against authority from a young age. But, after being arrested, a simple sentence led her to commit to a radical reimagining of her own life. She didn't know what form or shape it would take, until one day, ditching school, she found herself in the Self Realization Fellowship in LA, listening to the words of a woman who would change her life, and lead her down a path of spirituality she never saw coming. Especially since she'd rejected religion, or anything smacking of faith, in the years before. Now, a sought-after advisor, coach, yoga and meditation teacher, she travels the world leading workshops, retreats, and trainings, boasts a private clientele that includes Olympic athletes, NFL champions, NBA All-Stars and veterans of war, and hosts the Radically Loved podcast. A first-gen Mexican-American, Rosie's mission is to help others overcome adversity and experience radical love, and she shares her philosophy on radical love in her new book, You Are Radically Loved: A Healing Journey to Self-Love.You can find Rosie at: Website | InstagramIf you LOVED this episode:You'll also love the conversations we had with Justin Tranter about defying convention and expectation and carving your own path in the world. My new book Sparked.Check out our offerings & partners: Novo: Novo is a powerfully simple business banking platform with no hidden fees built for small business owners. In 1974 country music, singer songwriter, Dolly Parton got wind that Elvis Presley wanted to record her new song, “I Will Always Love You.“ According to Dolly, the deal fell through when Elvis's manager demanded 50% of the publishing revenue. Dolly refused, released the song herself, and years later arranged a more equitable deal with Whitney Houston, who of course made it a massive hit. It's a juicy bit of industry history that actually speaks more to our current reality than you might think. What Elvis's management did, demand a cut of the publishing revenue on top of the money he'd already make from album sales and live shows, is not an anomaly. Songwriter, Emily Warren knows this all too well. Emily's a songwriter and performer in Los Angeles. You've heard her on the show before in part, because she's written some huge hits, including Dua Lipa's “New Rules” and The Chainsmokers “Don't Let Me Down.” What happened to Dolly in ‘74 has happened a lot to Emily. She says that countless times, after an artist decides to record a song of hers that she wrote without any involvement with the artist, she'll get an email from the artist's management team, asking for a cut of her publishing. She says the emails are polite, but the mask and implied arrangement: give us a cut of the publishing they say, or we won't put out the song. So Emily's started talking to other established songwriters she knows, Tayla Parx, Ross Golan, Justin Tranter, and Savan Kotecha—they've all been asked to give up publishing. Together they decided they wanted to do something about this practice. So they formed an organization called The Pact, a group of music professionals who refuse to give publishing away for songs where artists do not contribute. Their goal is to make the music business more equitable for the creative laborers. Welcome to Episode 7 of Season 2 of Song Chronicles. Our featured special guest is Aaron Lee Tasjan. We spoke back in February, right after the release of his fantastic new album Tasjan! Tasjan! Tasjan! Aaron's newest album Aaron has led a fascinating life. He's lived in many different corners of the country, and has worked with the New York Dolls, Lucinda Williams, Jack White, and Tony Visconti. In this conversation, Aaron shares insights he learned from the artists he's connected with along the way. While living in Ohio at age 16, a song of Aaron's caught the attention of Peter Yarrow, who invited Tasjan onstage to perform with Peter, Paul and Mary. He learned from Yarrow how far songs can go from their intended meaning based on the projection of the listener. After earning a full scholarship to Berklee College of Music, Aaron dropped out after only one semester to get on with the business of making music. "Learning, that's a two-way street — you have to be open to it," he says. At the age of 19, he moved to New York City to start living his dream and had to figure out how to become part of the city's network of working musicians. Eventually, he got encouragement from and got to work with some of his Mount Rushmore musical heroes. We talk about the lessons he learned about creative passion and work ethic during that time and how he found community within the NYC music scene. Aaron met singer-songwriter Justin Tranter and together they formed the glam rock band Semi-Precious Weapons. Tony Visconti produced their debut album. We talk about what makes rock & roll work — Aaron's take is that rock & roll is slightly embarrassing — and how the band's manager BP Fallon created rock & roll moments for them, such as connecting them to Kate Moss for a hang that got them on the cover of the Daily Mail. Semi-Precious Weapons in 2008 After Aaron left Semi-Precious Weapons, he spent three years as lead guitarist for the New York Dolls. Aaron playing with the New York Dolls Since 2013, Aaron has lived in Nashville, writing songs and recording genre-defying solo work. In this time, he has released five solo albums: In The Blazes (2015), Silver Tears (2016), Karma For Cheap (2018), Karma For Cheap: Reincarnated (2019), and Tasjan! Tasjan! Tasjan! (2021). His songwriting can be heard on recordings by Pat Green, Yola, BP Fallon, and JD McPherson. We discuss the good and bad parts of the professional music culture in Nashville. BP Fallon and Aaron Lee Tasjan Aaron's fashion sense is all his own. He makes some of his own clothes, such as the sweater seen on the cover of Tasjan! Tasjan! Tasjan! We talk about what songwriting has to do with sewing and other ways he finds creative inspiration in non-musical activities. Aaron in the sweater he made Enjoy this conversation with Aaron about everything that goes in to a creative life.
We had the pleasure of interviewing Jake Wesley Rogers over Zoom video! After quietly stirring up buzz as an independent pop phenomenon, singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Jake Wesley Rogers signs to Facet Records—the label founded by powerhouse mega songwriter Justin Tranter—in partnership with iconic Warner Records. To celebrate the news, Jake shares his major label debut single and music video “Middle of Love” today. This morning, Zane Lowe personally premiered the tune on his Apple Music 1 radio show. About Jake, Zane described him as “wildly talented” and “sometimes people are just born into it.” About “Middle of Love,” he called it a “fantastic song” and “songwriting at its finest.” “Middle of Love” lives up to that high praise. Powered by propulsive piano and a stadium-size beat, the track leaps forward towards a massive refrain as he confesses, “I’m in the middle of love…in the middle of loving you.” The visual echoes this energy, while Jake tells his own story punctuated by vivid nostalgic lyrics and undeniable delivery. Though the bulk of his music was written before the pandemic, several were finished in lockdown, with “Middle of Love” showcasing the power of Justin’s mentorship and collaboration. He continues to pour out his heart on his forthcoming EP—coming soon. Born in Kansas City, MO, Jake Wesley Rogers combines skyscraping vocals, eloquent songcraft, and driving instrumentation to give pop a jolt of infectious integrity and soaring spirit. Generating 20 million-plus streams independently, he captivated a growing fanbase with various singles and the Evergreen EP [2017] and Spiritual EP [2019]. Attracting widespread acclaim, Atwood Magazine described “Little Queen” as “a triumphant anthem,” while Ones To Watch raved, “What was once a young man finding his way through solitary expression, now emerges an artist embracing a new future standing on the shoulders of his own younger self with his phenomenal new EP, Spiritual.” Eventually, Justin Tranter heard the powerful and poetic “Jacob From The Bible,” fell in love with Jake’s music, and signed him to Facet Records/Warner Records in 2020. Now, he kicks off his biggest, boldest, and brightest chapter yet with the single “Middle of Love” and more to come. Jake Wesley Rogers’ bold music is queer storytelling refracted through a universal lens; it’s inspired by the authenticity and artistry of his heroes like Adele, Regina Spektor, and Florence + the Machine. His songs are for everyone, but they’re special treats for those who know and share his experiences. Jake has turned his most formative years into some of the most stunning and evocative music you’ll hear this year. We want to hear from you! Starting out in the business, Justin began their career on stage as the figurehead of the glam-punk band Semi Precious Weapons, but eventually discovered something surprising. They didn’t actually need to be on stage to do the part of the work they loved; collaborating, writing and helping other leading artists create works of art that told their stories in a powerful way and moved millions. Justin has since become a pioneer in the music industry, working tirelessly to elevate the voices of everyone around them — whether marginalized people, emerging artists or global pop icons. Along the way, Justin’s also remained a committed philanthropist & GLAAD Board member, using their platform to rally for change across a number of causes, including representation/inclusion for LGBTQIA+ people, women & women of color. And, in 2018, coming full-circle, Justin made a donation to fund a state-of-the-art recording studio and part-time music teacher at that very same place that was his salvation as a kid, the Chicago Academy For The Arts. You can find Justin at:Instagram : https://www.instagram.com/tranterjustinCheck out our offerings & partners: Talkspace: Online Counseling Via Text, Audio, Or Video Messaging. What a delight! Join us for an exclusive interview with Emmy award-winning songwriter, producer, Eren Cannata as he chats with co host Emme Lentino! Eren Cannata is an Emmy award-winning songwriter, producer, musician and co-owner of Cove City Sound Studios. Signed to Warner Chappell / Facet House under world-renowned songwriter Justin Tranter, and industry powerhouse Katie Vinten, he is working with today’s biggest artists, writers and producers. Eren recently co-produced Demi Lovato’s most recent hit “Commander In Chief” with Finneas (Billie Eilish) and co-wrote the song with Demi, Justin Tranter and Julia Michaels. You can also hear his work as writer and producer of the soundtrack for the upcoming Kristen Stewart holiday movie “Happiest Season.” Having a famous saxophonist as his father, Eren grew up in New York fully immersed in the music scene touring with Billy Joel and The Beach Boys, distinctly remembering Carl Wilson teaching him how to sing harmonies backstage at 7 years old. In his early twenties, Eren stepped out and successfully released his first solo album in which one of the tracks landed a placement on the hit TV show Dawson’s Creek. Since then, he’s collaborated as a writer, producer and/or musician with some of the most talented and influential artists of our time, including Demi Lovato, Ryan Lewis, Justin Tranter, Paul Simon, Idina Menzel, Bebe Rexha, Absofacto, Jon Bellion, Watt, Timbaland, Fifth Harmony, CID, and Shea Diamond. He has also written songs for Academy Award-winner Brie Larson, Platinum-selling Atlantic Records artist Chef’Special, and has collaborated to produce and write audio art installations in multiple contemporary museums across the United States, including his upcoming installation with the Smithsonian in 2020. Eren’s passion for philanthropy has driven him to become involved with the Boys and Girls Club of America, where he and his wife Kristen developed a songwriting program called S.O.N.G. (Sounds of a New Generation), which teaches the art of writing and creating a hit song to inner city kids.
This week we chinwag about the lack of well-known female producers in the music industry. Afterward we chat with music producer, Esjay Jones. Esjay is a South African-born producer & songwriter now based between Los Angeles and Joshua Tree, California, who had her first major cut in the U.S. alongside co-writer Justin Tranter in 2013 with the single “I Choose U” by TimeFlies on Def Jam Records. Since then, she has worked with Sean Kingston, Jeffree Star, Olivia Holt, Escape The Fate, Mystery Skulls with Nile Rodgers and Brandy, Chester Rushing ('Stranger Things'), Alien Ant Farm, and many others. Esjay has had over a decade of success in the music Industry: during the first part, she cemented herself as one of South Africa’s top rock vocalists fronting Durban-based band, Stealing Love Jones. The band achieved mainstream success with 4 #1 Singles, as well as sharing the stage with major international acts like Fall Out Boy, Violent Femmes, Seether, Jimmy Eat World, and many more. She is currently a part of the production team for the re-imagined 'GREY DAZE' album (Chester Bennington reels from 1994-1997), featuring Head & Munkey from Korn, Ryan Shuck of Orgy, Chris Traynor of Bush, and more. The post Esjay Jones, Producer & Songwriter first appeared on idobi Network.
Selena Gomez is a singer, songwriter, and actress, who’s spent most of her life in the public eye. She started her acting career as a child, and put out her first albums as a teenager. She’s had three number one albums and eight Top 10 hits, and in 2017, Billboard named her Woman of the Year. At one point, she was the most followed person on Instagram, and the details of her life are constantly discussed in tabloid headlines. So, when your private life is that public, how do you write a song about something as personal as heartbreak? Selena teamed up with the Grammy-winning production duo Mattman & Robin, who she’d worked with before. And she turned to her longtime songwriting collaborators, Julia Michaels and Justin Tranter. Julia Michaels is also a Grammy-nominated artist in her own right, and Justin Tranter, also a Grammy nominee, was named BMI’s 2017 Pop Songwriter of the Year. The three of them have written 10 songs together, including this one, “Lose You to Love Me.” The song came out in October 2019, and went on to become Selena’s first number-one hit. It went double-platinum in the US, and was named one of the best songs of the year by Vulture and Billboard. In this episode, Selena, Julia and Justin break down how the song came to be, from the first writing session to the final production touches from Finneas. songexploder.net/selena-gomez

Music is the way to the soul and for many it is the balm needed to make it through rough times. For Katie Vinten, music helped her through the rough times and elevated the wonderful times. She has always been drawn to music and has since taken the music industry by storm. Through his belief in her, and following her own gut, she managed to find and sign several amazing artists. Chris Jackson, legendary publisher and Editor-in-Chief of One World, an imprint of Penguin Random House, is here with Valarie Kaur, one of his star authors—or, as he prefers to see his writers, who include Trevor Noah, Ta-Nehisi Coates, Jay-Z, and Mira Jacob, “superheroes.” After all, changing the country is not for the faint of heart, and Chris looks for formidable fighters. Kaur’s unique superpowers as a civil rights activist, lawyer, filmmaker, and author—with degrees from Stanford, Harvard, and Yale—have helped her win policy changes on the multiple fronts of hate crimes and racial profiling, immigration detention and deportation, solitary confinement, surveillance and Internet freedom, and more. But it was her speech in Washington DC at the Metropolitan AME Church in the wake of the divisive 2016 election—a speech where she invited us all to midwife a new nation waiting to be born from the darkness—that catapulted her into the spotlight. It garnered 40 million views and led to this stunning new book, See No Stranger: A Memoir and Manifesto of Revolutionary Love. What an incredible read! Van Jones calls it “a miracle, a blessing, a new paradigm.” Elizabeth Gilbert says: “In a world stricken with fear and turmoil, Valarie Kaur shows us how to summon our deepest wisdom.” I couldn't agree more and couldn’t put it down. Chris Jackson’s list at One World includes some of the most talented writers, humanitarians and activists in the world, including numerous National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize winners. His mission is to bring to the forefront novelists, memoirists, journalists, poets, and artists whose fresh voices challenge or even subvert the status quo and help us reframe how we see our rapidly transforming world. Chris's own writing has appeared in The Paris Review, Callalloo, The Atlantic(.com), and other outlets. You could call Chris and Valarie literary soulmates. Their story, which you’re about to hear, will be a soothing balm for any writer feeling alone and unseen—wondering if and when the rest of their superhero team will ever hear the call. In fact, Valarie had been writing this book for nearly two decades before meeting Chris and had a truckload of journals to prove it. As you’ll see, it was worth the wait! This episode is all about love: Love of ideas. Love for our histories and education—even when interrupted. Love for the systems that support us. And the ones that need to change. It’s also about taking action, even when we’re deeply afraid. Even when all we can do at the moment is love ourselves. Valarie now leads the Revolutionary Love Project, whose aim is to reclaim love as a force for justice in America. I can’t wait for you to get to know her and Chris. My guess is you’ll feel the love. Welcome.PS. To close out this episode, a big thank you, Ani DiFranco and Righteous Babe Records, for allowing us to use a song they produced for this book and the Revolutionary Love movement, coming this fall. It’s aptly called See No Stranger and features Ani DiFranco, Justin Tranter, Ivan Neville, Milck, Raye Zaragoza, Zoe Boekbinder, Princess Shaw, and Gracie and Rachel.PSS. Shea Diamond has experienced so many facets of America as a black trans woman, and with songwriter Justin Tranter, she's woven those experiences into "I Am America," a blistering, funky anthem about community and belonging. Her track is also the theme song for the new HBO show "We're Here," which follows a team of a drag queens bringing drag shows to small towns across the country, challenging our assumptions about who makes up the "real America." We sit down with Diamond and Tranter to discuss singing as preaching, what it means to release this track during Pride month, why the flat seventh hits so good, and how the horns on the song feature producer Eren Cannata's dad Richie on sax, making this bop a true family affair. Top of the charts songwriter, Justin Tranter, and Stephanie talk about the music industry, the art of collaboration, forgiveness and using your privileges to stand for what you believe in.
Can political protest exist within the confines of commercial popular music? Songwriter Justin Tranter is equal parts songwriter and activist. You've likely heard his contributions to songs by Britney Spears, Julia Michaels, Selena Gomez, Janelle Monae and Ariana Grande, but unless you were paying close attention, you may have missed the essential subtext in his work. As an LGBTQ activist and board member of GLAAD, Justin brings his activism into Top 40 pop music lyrically and otherwise. On this episode, he breaks down his newest hit "Swan Song" which was co-written with Dua Lipa. This song is a triple threat serving as the end credits for the film Alita: Battle Angel, a Billboard hit, and a protest against the silencing of marginalized people. Justin shows us how representation in songwriting is inseparable from politics. And he's creating an open mic for new voices and stories that have been historically ignored by the pop industry. Songs Discussed: Dua Lipa - "Swan Song"Charlie Puth - "Attention"Selena Gomez - "Good For You"Imagine Dragons - "Believer"Taylor Swift - "Love Story"Halsey - "Bad At Love"Haydn - "Farewell" Symphony No. 45Shea Diamond - "Seen It All" Listen to D.
