This week, the London Hippy is fuelled by his excitement for an upcoming trip to Brazil and has been listening to the sounds of Boogaloo and Latin Rock. Playing icons like Tim Maia and Joe Bataan are always fun but we dive deeper into the latin sound by exploring rock from Mexico, Peru and Chile in 60s. The second half of the show maintains psychedelic sonics from a contemporary angle by shining a kaleidoscopic view on Flying Lotus' Brainfeeder Label.  After two months of inactivity, I am happy to present another new programme for NuDirections. The program under the name Rise Above aims to help people overcome the sadness and devastation caused by a world in conflict. Never underestimate the healing power of music. I have included some of my favourite tunes I regularly spin at Big Hands, the coolest bar in Manchester, as well as some discoveries like the talented Jon Lucien. I highly recommend listening to his song "Would You Believe in Me" - he may not be a current singer, but he is truly amazing. Good music is timeless and always worth discovering. Another discovery is the vibrant dancehall tune of More Justice and Truth by Virgin Island's reggae star Pressure Busspipe. Another novelty I found recently, is the great tune of Say Truth by Fred Fisher Atalobhor. Inside my DJ boxes, I get my most regular artist's music played in my sets. There you will find Manu Chao, Joe Bataan, Dreadzone, Mo-Horizons, Zulu 9.30, International Velvet and Planet Hemp. Of course, Hip hop artist and producer from Dallas Oneofus with the great track and theme of the programme. Last but not least, Jah is forever is beautiful melody of lovers Rock by Swish Reggae producer Elijah Solomon and and Jamaican singer Glen Washington. My selection is a bunch of exciting tunes for empowering our minds and souls to Rise Above. Playlist 1- Baby Shiva - International Velvet (featuring Mustafa Akbar and Roots of See-I) 2- More Justice and truth - Pressure 3- Say the truth - Fred Fisher Atalobhor and his Ogiza Dance Band 4- Would you believe in me - Jon Lucien 5- Muchacho ordinario - Joe Bataan 6- Me provoca te ver - Manu Chao & Chalart 58 7- Mountain - Dreadzone 8- Frisson - Mukta 9- Southern Fried Funky Lovesong - Mo'Horizons 10- Era - Zulu 9.30 11- A culpa é de Quem - Planet Hemp 12- Rise Above - One of Us (featuring Flotation and Molecular) 13 Jah is forever - Elijah (featuring Glen Washington)

We also chat about Louis Armstrong, Jerry Stahl, and his love for classic film. I had a blast talking to Skip. I was scrambling to write down his recommendations and interests! He is like the cool older brother that turns you onto art that will change your life. You can find the new album over on Bandcamp. Thanks for listening! Kyler --- Press Release: "Hollywood -- Bandleader/composer Skip Heller has long enjoyed a diverse career, but one close look at his resume - which includes working with Yma Sumac, Bootsy Collins, NRBQ, Lalo Guerrero, Los Lobos, the Klezmatics, Todd Rundgren, and Joe Bataan - and it becomes clear that film noir is his home base... Dark Passages (named after a David Goodis novel) takes the listener through the world of noir, largely concentrating on mid century classics (Touch of Evil, The Hustler, Kiss Me Deadly, Riffifi), B movies (Foreign Intrigue, Beat Girl), TV (Twilight Zone, Perry Mason), and two of Heller's noir originals. In addition, the first pressing features a cover by none other than Cal Schenkel, whose album covers for Frank Zappa, Captain Beefheart, and Tom Waits are (pardon the word) iconic." Welcome to this season of the VMP Anthology Podcast, I'm your host Andrew Winistorfer. This season, our 14th, unbelievably, is devoted to telling the story of Ghetto Records, a short-lived latin-jazz, soul, and boogaloo label founded by latinx music legend Joe Bataan. Collecting literally everything the label ever released–six albums, and a brand new compilation featuring loose 7-inches and unreleased material–this is the complete story of a small slice of the rich history of New York latinx musics. We partnered with Now Again records to make this box possible, and are excited for these albums–many of which sell for hundreds of dollars–to be back in circulation and on streaming for the first time ever.  Because this label and music are both not that well known, we thought we'd focus this season around telling brief overviews of the albums, and then playing a bunch of music for you. My co-host though Ghetto Records is Pablo E. Yglesias, a DJ, writer and latin music historian who wrote the extensive liner notes for this box set. We still have a few copies of this box left, so go grab it if you haven't already.  In this episode, we'll talk the background of Ghetto, how Joe Bataan used spite to launch Ghetto Records, and at the end, we'll talk the first album in the box, Ghetto Records Presents Eddie Lebron.

The stories of Salsa Continue..In this episode of Mambo in the City Salsa Podcast: El Cantante Frankie Morales stops bye to shares stories of Joe Bataan, growing up around Ismael Miranda, Pete El Conde Rodriguez and the Club Corso,  where he began singing coro for "El Cantante de Los Cantantes" Hector Lavoe! Frankie talks about growing up in El Barrio in New York City, working w/ Conjunto Clássico, travels with Ismael Rivera and Eddie Montalvo, Recording with Jimmy Sabater,  Tito Allen!  Frankie also talks about being hired by "The King" Tito Puente life on the road w/ Tito Puente, recordings and being the last singer for the King of Latin Music.Hosted by Adrian Montanez & DJ Broadway!BIO Learning from Salsa's legends such as Joe Bataan and Hector Lavoe, Frankie was primed to step it up when the greats like Celia Cruz, Ismael Rivera, Ismael Miranda, Pellin Rodriguez and Cheo Feliciano, among others, came knocking. Starting on the streets of "El Barrio", New York City's Spanish Quarter, Frankie has come a long way, and to this day, continues to grow. His first recording "Sabor Del Barrio" led the way to a ten year association with Bad Street Boys. With an inherent desire to return to his roots, and with a firm work ethic rooted in the philosophy that "growth comes to a Salsero through ‘work, work and more work' Frankie parted ways and started focusing on the Salsa genre once again. Proving that it was the right choice for him, Frankie was ready when the Lebron Brothers invited him to sit in and record with them. The recording was so impressive, that Caiman Records then produced two albums featuring none other than Frankie Morales as a solo artist, entitled "Frankie Morales: En Su Punto" and "Standing Out". These two albums exposed Frankie to greater audiences and enhanced both his experience and reputation resulting in what he thought to be a dream when he was invited as an independent vocalist to join the great legends of "The Fania All-Stars."Continuing to grow his experience, and after singing back-up for Tito Nieves, the late visionary, Ralph Mercado recommended Frankie to Ernest "Tito" Puente, who was in search of a lead vocalist. Traveling the world with Master Puente, "El Rey Del Timbal," was definitely one of the highlights of Frankie's career and famed him as a Grammy Award winner with the recordings of "Tito Puente Mambo Birdland" and "Masterpiece", Puente's final album and collaboration with "The Great" Eddie Palmieri. Still today, even after "El Rey's" passing, Frankie holds the position of Lead Vocalist with the Tito Puente Orchestra.Bio Credit: klaveLatina.comSupport the show (https://cash.app/$AdrianLMontanez)

He was a featured speaker at the Creative Summit in New York, and Art Pace San Antonio and has taught at Williams College, UCLA, Otis, CalArts, Skowhegan and the Alternative School. His work with Slanguage studio, a project Mario founded with his partner Karla Diaz 20 years ago, has been an influential and oftentimes the sole provider of arts in his community. Slanguage has been based out of an old bakery shop in Wilmington Ca, out of a warehouse in Long beach Ca, out of LAX art in Hollywood, and has seen many changes and iterations. What does not change is a lifetime commitment to their community with contribution to the careers of many young artists, curators and organizers practicing in the artworld and affecting change today.

Joe Bataan reveals the detailed story of how he wound up in prison, and the serendipity and hard work he put in, to get himself out - all driven by his love and passion for music & and his desire to succeed. Handling prison life and the mindset that allowed him to move his life forward, even while inside… the incredible determination and effort he put in, to learn to compose music and play piano, clever strategies he used to help make “Gypsy Woman” a hit. Playing with Cornell Dupree & Bernard Purdie, playing in Central Park, making $100,000 with one phone call (after a lifetime of just getting by), reinventing himself with the internet, having a spiritual awakening, why he has 9 lives, and tons of other cool stuff. Joe is a LEGEND in the Latin Soul genre, and this interview is incredibly open and fun - a MUST listen: If you'd like to support this show: http://www.everyonelovesguitar.com/support Joe Bataan grew up in East Harlem and had the hustle to rise up from a difficult situation to become recognized as one of the founding fathers of Latin soul music. In 1973, he helped coin the phrase "Salsoul", and he also co-founded the Salsoul record label. Between 1967 & 1981, Joe released 13 LPs. His 1968 LP Riot! went gold, his 1975 hit The Bottle (from his LP AfroFilipino) went to #5 on the Billboard Charts... and he has since released another 6 LPs from 1997 to today.
