I've got the absolute pleasure of sitting down with the powerhouse trio from New Orleans' own Bad Operation: Dominic, Greg, and D-Ray.Now, if you don't know Bad Operation, you're about to get schooled! These guys are injecting a much-needed shot of adrenaline into the ska scene, bringing that classic sound with a fresh, modern twist with the phrase they've coined, New Tone. We're gonna be talking about their creative process behind their music, and what it's like to be part of a scene that's constantly evolving.Music By:Bad Operation - Peachy, Stay Inside and I Don't Wanna KnowSet The Tone - A Break In The RainThe Fullstops - What Good (AYS Exclusive) The Austin Young Show Theme - The FullstopsThe Austin Young Show Outro - Jeffboy Zen Follow The Austin Young ShowTalent Manager: Veronica Young *DISCLAIMER: I hereby declare that I do not own the rights to this music/song. Where has Miss Shaw been? In Nashville working on a new record - including laying down one track written by another New Orleans music legend
Apparently a few cranks are bitching that Amanda is spending time in Nashville and a little less time in New Orleans, because they are joyless idiots with nothing better to do
In the '90s, a group of legendary rock and pop artists banded together, blending inspirations, genres, influences and styles to form a uniquely collaborative sound. The Bangles, The Cowsills, REM, The dBs, and Hootie And The Blowfish were all represented in The Continental Drifters. Author and musician Sean Kelly has written the definitive Drifters tomb, White Noise & Lightning: The Continental Drifters Story and he joins us this week, along with iconic Drifter Peter Holsapple, to take us on a journey from Hollywood to New Orleans, in the late 90s, through the rich layers of alternative, folk, California pop and Americana that shaped the remarkable story of this legacy mega-group.We kick off the show with comedian and Emmy winning comedy writer Brian Kiley, who shares his experiences in the writing trenches with Conan O'Brien and Ellen DeGeneres. Brian joins us fresh from his experiences performing overseas for the U.S. military and recording his Dry Bar Comedy special. Brian will be opening soon for Fritz at The El Portal Theater in North Hollywood!Sean and Peter then offer a Continental Drifters deep dive into their origin story, their musical heritages and their founding members, including New Orleans legend, Carlo Nuccio who inspired the band's move from a weekly residency at Raji's in Hollywood to one at Howlin' Wolf in New Orleans. The Drifters quickly ascended from a supergroup to a force of nature.Peter talks about his time with R.E.M. and Hootie and the Blowfish, Sean and Peter give us an in depth look at the band's inner wiring and how their on-stage chemistry met with conflicting ingredients in the studio. The beating heart of The Drifters was always the personal bonds and when the romantic energy within the group began to shift, just like within any family, the entire group was thrown off balance.Sean and Peter relay their frustration with their record label's confusion as to how to market The Drifters, what members were seeking in contrast to their previous industry experiences, what inspired Sean to write the book, why Vermillion is Peter's favorite Drifters album and details about the brand new tribute album featuring Drifters songs performed by 25 artists including Marshall Crenshaw, Debbi Peterson and John Cowsill!Plus, Weezy is recommending, the MSNBC doc, From Russia With Lev and Fritz is looking ahead with 'What's Next? Last Friday, the nation's youngest HBCU president was formally installed – and it happened right here in Louisiana. That's right, Dr. Martin Lemelle, Jr. became the president of Grambling State University. Dr. Lemelle previously served as executive vice president and CFO at the Maryland Institute of Art, Executive Vice President and COO at Grambling, and holds multiple degrees that demonstrate his commitment to innovation and leadership. He joined us to discuss his journey to this historic appointment. The City of New Orleans recently released its findings from the 2024 Music Census. The goal of the study was to gain insight into the city's music ecosystem to bring about meaningful change that will support the city's music economy. Julie Heath, the policy & outreach manager with the New Orleans Office of Nighttime Economy, breaks down the study and its findings. Back in June,we brought you our four-part series, Road to Rickwood, that looked at the intersection of baseball and civil rights at America's oldest ballpark, Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Alabama. One of the main guests on the podcast was former Negro Leaguer Reverend Bill Greason. And while he is best remembered as a teammate of Willie Mays on the Birmingham Black Barons – and being the first Black pitcher signed to the Cardinals – that's only a small part of his story. Greason recently celebrated his 100th birthday at a party at Rickwood Field. The Gulf States Newsroom's Joseph King brings us this report.___Today's episode of Louisiana Considered was hosted by Karen Henderson. Our managing producer is Alana Schrieber. In 2010, to mark the 5th anniversary of the Katrina disaster, we went way way back to honor New Orleans as the unique American treasure it is. This program tells the story of how jazz emerged in the context of all the other African American musics that proliferated in late 19th and early 20th century New Orleans: blues, ragtime, Mardi Gras Indian music, vaudeville and minstrelsy, spiritual church music, and more. With our guides Bruce Boyd Raeburn and Lynn Abbott, we'll comb through a vast world of interviews, recorded music, photographs, ephemera, and curatorial knowledge at one of the great American music collections, the William Ransom Hogan Jazz Archive at Tulane University. Produced by Ned Sublette.
On episode three of the Between Bites podcast with Nina Compton and Larry Miller, Robin Barnes talks about growing up in the New Orleans music scene, her musical inspirations, as well as her fitness movement 'Move Ya Brass'. Robin grew up surrounded by jazz sounds, as made evident by a #5 debut on the Traditional Jazz Albums Billboard charts in 2016. As Robin got older and mainstream music began to take hold, she began to marry the old and the new to create her own unique blend of funky jazz, soul and R&B. In addition to being an award-winning music artist, she's also a voiceover actor, media host, and one of the city of New Orleans' biggest ambassadors and influencers.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The show’s two most frequently recurring guests, Derrick Freeman of SOUL Brass Band & Ethan Ellestad of MaCCNO, come together for the first time on the same episode. We chop up the latest ABO ordinance under consideration by the City Council, development fueled gentrification, the WaPo piece on the rampant arrest warrants in New Orleans, Safety & Permits corruption, and more. It really is a good life down here folks, but sometimes you have to bullhorn about the bad stuff in order to preserve the life we chose to live in the city we love. That’s this episode. When Derrick Freeman comes on the show and we don’t talk Saints at the beginning of the season, you know it’s time to get serious about some civic, cultural & political issues that matter.

Fifty years ago, about 30,000 hippies descended on Prairieville, Louisiana, for three days of peace, love, and music at the New Orleans Pop Festival. While not technically in New Orleans, the New Orleans Pop Festival drew quite a few national acts that had performed about two weeks earlier at Woodstock and helped inspire a generation of New Orleans musicians.
From his instantly recognizable voice to his virtuosic musical ability, Dr. John was one of the best musicians to ever come out of New Orleans. When Malcolm John Rebennack passed away at the age of 77 on June 6, 2019, fans of New Orleans music mourned the loss of a true original. His unique talent propelled Dr. John to the heights of the music industry, into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame, and helped him land six Grammy awards during his six decade career. But, to many people back home in New Orleans, he was simply Mac.WGNO's very own LBJ was lucky enough to develop a friendship with Mac, who he interviewed over the course of more than 20 years. At one point, LBJ even dined on a meal of raccoon with Mac.Listen to LBJ recount that and many other stories, and hear from the legendary Dr. John himself in this special podcast. As Dr. John would say, “Yeah you right.”

DC’s Mike James and Mollie Ames discuss: The best way to end a restrictive diet are also the same things you're eating when you realize you need to go on diet, and Biga Wood Fired Pizzeria puts Kirtland on the map. (Part 1 of the Podcast only content) We just witnessed the single greatest NFL Conference Championship weekend in history, and it can also teach us a good lesson in empathy. You know what's worse than living with "The Fumble" as a Cleveland Browns fan? Living with "The No-Call" the rest of your life as a Saints fan. Nowhere in the rich and diverse history of New Orleans music is there ever a mention of "Caribbean Drunk". Outer-rim hijinks and planning a trip to "Cappy's". (Part 2 of the Podcast only content, begins at the 1:11:00 mark) Let Me Tell You A Story (Best Of Edition!): Lachlan MacKinnon’s “The Science Project” (begins at the 1:23:00 mark) Even notice how "morning" and "mourning" sound exactly the same? Something has to be done about this. This Belichick-Brady-Patriots Dynasty is in its 17th year now... That shouldn't be possible! Dario Argento's "Suspiria" from 1977 is absolutely fantastic, way ahead of its time, and well worth seeing today for anyone who's interested in the 2018 remake. And some people think his daughter drove a celebrated chef to kill himself. (Part 3 of the Podcast only content, begins at the 1:55:00 mark) Spoiler Alert: Every bit of dramatic tension in the film "Bohemian Rhapsody" are all the parts of the script that aren't true. Dan Snyder's outright refusal to change his team's name is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to racism and the Washington "Redskins" NFL franchise: The story of how our nation's capital is home to the only pro-sports team ever who was legally forced to desegregate its all white roster by the Federal government (and how Dan Snyder also sucks). Explaining the real story of why it's so difficult and expensive for fans to get Super Bowl tickets, and then listing all the "best" tailgating options available to you if you end up not getting into the game. (Part 4 of the Podcast only content, begins at the 2:33:00 mark) Explaining how "Nugent" and "Trump" are no longer just surnames and proper nouns, they've turned into very gross and definitive descriptive terms. In Memoriam of those who are still alive and we didn’t know it: Part 3 – Linda Perry, aka the singer/songwriter from that band 4 Non Blondes who wrote that one song of theirs we all know. And how to properly get rid of "earworms". What is a Maroon 5 and why are they playing the Super Bowl. All this and so much more on this episode of the Defend Cleveland Podcast. Enjoy~ Check out Lachlan MacKinnon’s best selling book, ‘Let Me Tell You A Story: Small Stories Of A Large Family’! Thank you to KidForce Pinball for sponsoring the podcast, 91.1-FM WRUW Cleveland for being home to the show, engineer extraordinaire Mollie Ames, and to the city that inspires us, Cleveland, Ohio. Your recommended listening for the week is Steve Gunn's 2019' full length release "The Unseen In Between" available via Matador Records. The intro and outro to Lachlan’s segment is the song “My Summer In Traction” by the band Ohio Civil War , and it’s used with permission.
Staying busy and relevant in the New Orleans music scene isn't easy. It requires talent and commitment because there is always someone in the wings waiting to replace you, especially in New Orleans - one the the nation's busiest and most competitive music scenes. How John "Papa" Gros stays sharp is a lesson for all of us, and how he feeds energy to his bandmates and how he receives their inspiration in the moment is a message we can all benefit from. John knows What's Working because he's doing it every day. Besides all of this, he may just be the coolest guy I've ever talked to.

Do U Want It? is a music documentary that tells the story of the New Orleans funk band, Papa Grows Funk, their residency at The Maple Leaf Bar, and then their indefinite hiatus that they announced in 2013. The film doesn't just capture a band in transition and the creative differences that came along though. It also offers an insider's glimpse into what makes the New Orleans music community so special, which the film sometimes accents with New Orleans-styled animation. No surprise then that the film won the audience award at the New Orleans Film Festival when it screened there in 2017. The film has also screened in festivals across the country including San Francisco Indie Fest, Oxford (Mississippi) Film Festival, and Chicago International Movies & Music Festival. Just a few weeks ago, the film won Best Music Documentary at San Francisco's Frozen Film Festival. I had the chance to catch the film when it screened at the Louisiana International Film Festival in April. That's where I met the film's directors, Josh FreundandSam Radutzky. I was captivated by their affection for the New Orleans music scene and by the way their film explores Papa Grows Funk's creative collaborations, both when they work and when they don't, so I invited them to come on the show. Some of the things we discuss include How to connect with bands at shows What makes the New Orleans music scene so distinct The tension that arises between musicians who are content to preform locally and those who want to build a national following How much footage and editing goes into shooting a feature-length music documentary The way that Josh and Sam resolved their own creative differences during post Budgeting for animated clips in a film and an indie tip for getting a lower rate How to shoot a band on tour # Want to hear from a band that played at Jazz Fest this year? Typically my podcasts just flow organically out of what I'm currently listening to but sometimes I get a sense that I want to force a change is what I am listening to. I actively seek a different direction. That is what you have here. I have felt like I have just been only in the high energy realm for sometime. Now granted, that is where my predilection certainly lays but I do like to mellow it out sometimes and in this case I wanted to go with a mellow jazz vibe. I started with my go-tos and went from there. The genre grouping rapidly spiraled out of control however leaving me at a loss for what to title the podcast, hence the reference to this essay "Why Jazz isn't Cool Anymore" Anyway, I think you're gonna like the change of pace. Thanks for listening and don't forget to support the artists. New Orleans brass band music is alive and thriving, thanks to a procession of younger musicians who've kept things fresh while staying true to the roots and the tradition. Following in the path of groups like the Dirty Dozen and the Rebirth Brass Band, the Stooges have put their own stamp on the music with a sound that layers generous helpings of hip-hop, funk, modern jazz and pop over a body-shaking beat and a propulsive intensity stoked by countless hours of second-lining on the Nola streets. After seeing them perform, I got founder and trombonist Walter Ramsay, saxman Virgil Tiller and drummer/trombonist Garfield Bogan into the studio for some talk and tunes, including a sneak peek at their forthcoming EP, their first CD since 2003's "It's About Time."
