Sometimes it pays to just ask people to be on the show. Like here, where I asked Eric Henderson (formerly in the bands Splyt and Zeromind and currently making the podcast Zerocast) to come talk about his bands and what he’s been up to, and the weirdness of my relentless quest to find more of the wonderful music that I spent so long trying to find. If you want to check out Splyt’s music then head over to this Reverb Nation page. Don’t look for them on PureVolume, that’ll just make you sad. Or maybe you’d rather check out What’s In Your Mind from Zeromind. But you really should check out Eric’s podcast Zerocast. Austin Gray (Singer/Songwriter) from Utah, is formerly from several different places, most importantly PureVolume.com, THE music/social networking website of 2004. Austin’s taken his love of music and DIY recording all around the states, in various formations, bands and projects, to ultimately wind-up in the midwest U.S. of A. where we catch up over coffee on Zoom, and chat about many things, including his FANTASTIC new song “Lost Time”. One of many great things in the ‘silver linings playbook’ of this awful covid-time, is the excuse to reach out to far away friends, especially when everyone you know is far away. I can’t believe how many different apps we’ve used over the years to stay in touch. We take a look into Austin’s beginnings and his approach to music. Due to unforseen choppy-ness in the Zoom connection, we resolved to continue the chat another time soon. I beg you to check out Austin’s southern rock meets brit-rock sound in the single, available digitally everywhere! Alex Knight is a singer/songwriter/guitarist with over a decade of experience in various aspects of the music industry. He began booking shows at the age of 16 and went on to work with and play in multiple bands, having the most success with the pop/rock act The Arrival. The Arrival was named one of the top independent acts in the U.S. by PureVolume, after which they landed booking representation from The Agency Group and management representation with The Artery Foundation. The Arrival toured nationally for multiple years and count showcasing at South By Southwest and recording an EP with Zack Odom and Kenneth Mount of ZK Productions (Cartel, Mayday Parade) among their favorite accomplishments. Knight has a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration and also has years of experience coordinating and participating in numerous arts and music events. He was the Associate Course Director for the Event Management course in the Entertainment Business Bachelor’s Program at Full Sail University before accepting his current position as Course Director for the Artist Management class in the Music Business Bachelor’s Programs at Full Sail. The Artist Management course was recently utilized as part of the new 3300 + Climbing artist development initiative in this program, and Alex helped coordinate students from other Full Sail programs such as Film and Show Production as they worked with Music and Entertainment Business students to create content for the initiative’s first auditions and subsequent artist selections. Knight is also currently acting as writer, producer, and co-star of a comedic web series called The Lost Weekend, which is based on his band’s experiences as independent musicians and features some former members of The Arrival.

My main guest is Jason Call of the band Daphne Loves Derby and now Mariner. We talk about his band's space rocket to success by gaining more than 5 million downloads for just 1 song through sites like PureVolume and MySpace and how that led to a record deal, world tours. How did it happen? How did they do it? Did they hack the system or were they just the first to do it? Special Note: This episode I'm taking your calls on skype. It was a very last minute decision to do a podcast solely based on who I could talk to via skype at that very second. Thanks to Louis DeFabrizio, Nate Allen, Thiago Messias for the chat and everyone else that I didn't get to actually talk to on the podcast. I'll do this again and it will continue to improve.
