Veteran Kitchener/Waterloo music scene-sters, pub musicians and now podcasters: Jesse Webber & Jay Carraro, bring you humour and all sorts of wonderful Kitchener beloved fellow musicians, artists and more on their show “Kitchener Famous w/ Jesse & Jay”. What started off as a covid-era project has become yet another song from the heart from these guys, and it's loaded with hooks and charm. Dear listener: If I've ever claimed to dedicate my show to just the hardcore fans and no-longer hope for approval, I've never meant it more than here in the last month. I mean, I DO love these guys and you SHOULD listen to their podcast.. but you're not gonna get a prime and well promoted exposé on anything they do here, sorry-not sorry. You're gonna get three longtime friends catching up and chatting about shit with a LOOSE interview-ish-like structure, which I always find more enjoyable anyway. You're also gonna get some great local (to Kitchener) music by LoFi Mind, IAM5AM ft. Mary 5E, TayLynn and the brand new single by Jesse Webber “Brand New Day”. Episode art: a re-presentation of photo used for The Community Edition, with full credit to photographer Nick Stanley. https://communityedition.ca/kw-podcast-explores-local-fame/ Songs: “Things Aren't Like They Used To Be” by Lofi Mind “I Dare Ya To” by IAM5AM feat. I'm overwhelmed to think of all (“Culture Fancier” aka) Glodeane Brown's done/is doing, for art and to the artist's benefit, to the whole art community's benefit. 5 years ago in March, Culture Fancier was born. It's an amazing art blog for the Waterloo Region; spotlighting, showcasing and chatting with the artists (and others) behind every museum, gallery, novel, painting, installation, album, independent film and more, in the region & beyond.. Way to get your weekly output dwarfed, EVERY built-in art section in the region's press, COMBINED! In fact, Culture Fancier has led to professional column gigs, as well as opportunities to cover art outside of the region.. it's certainly gained Glodeane much deserved admiration among hundreds of artists whose work was turned on to people through the blog, and hundreds more who seek to have their work ‘culture-fancied'.. I just riffed that, it might catch on. In the time that the blog's started and built itself into what it is now and always has been (fantastic), Glodeane completed a post-grad at Humber College for Arts Administration & Cultural Management, taken on various roles in CAFKA's biennial (with all that's involved between events and behind the scenes); CAFKA (Contemporary Art Forum Kitchener and Area) being a huge art exhibit spread across WR's public space (I've seen it, it's intense and amazing). Now that I've scratched the surface.. Did I mention that I'm lucky enough to know Glodeane, because I was also lucky enough to regularly share the stage with lovely singer/songwriters Christen Latham and Matt Lees at the dive-iest dive, the early-mid 2000s Circus Room? Did I mention she's found a way to offer moral support and followed everything I've done creatively over the years since? Did I mention she once got debilitatingly anti-social (then) me on to the dance floor at a friend's wedding back in the day - cause she's that cool? Not to make it about the past, but as I wrap up TDS, I can't go without shouting about how awesome my brilliant and hard-working friend is and always has been.. with all the gratitude I feel while typing it. Now you can listen to me say it all on iTunes or whatever and even more inarticulate! Meet Daniel Hodgson, a worldclass (though hobbyist now) photographer and a vinyl enthusiast, not to mention an Australian/Canadian & KW-based friend of mine since early 2011. It was nice to catch up with Daniel and a chance to shoot the shit with him on a podcast, which features on it's cover, a photo taken by him. We chat about KW, accents, photography and vinyl… which is always nice! Enjoy! Enjoy the wonderful music on this episode, including “Avenue B” by Vienna D'Amato Hall, “The Chauffer” by Warpaint & “DoYaThing” by Gorillaz. Produced, edited and hosted by Todd. V/O by Milo Axelrod. In the fellowship of those who’d fall into the “arty kid” category, I’d like to present L.A.-based Chris Baldwin, a Visual Development Artist at Dreamworks TV and one heck of an indie musician. We met online as is with most of my West coast friends (I mean acquaintances, but I do heart all of’m) and in a post-Channel 101 event thing.. I could tell already that we’d have a rad convo about making shit. I give full credit to Chris, on the rad-ness. So listen, and find out how this super talented vis artist and new wave dream pop dude got started, and sees the art he makes. It’s padded by SWEET examples of his music-itude too! In the immortal words of Blackstreet, “East side to the West side”, Patricia Tscharskyj (a trained & experienced photographer and assistant camera for tv/film) moved from New York to the south and ultimately to Los Angeles and fairly recently. MOST recently, Patricia’s found herself making dope shit for Frequency 101, with the show “Stripper Squad”. We met, as I have most of my fellow Freq’shows, over Zoom conferences and she was kind enough to grace TDS with her talented self. What more can I say? It was a delightful chat! Listening to it, that’s where YOU come in! We chat about Patricia’s creative life to date, Frequency 101, her awesome show Stripper Squad… and, what’s that you’re trying to tell me, Birdy? Hot gos'!? California’s Jim Garrett is a fellow 101’er whose relatively new work I was already digging upon whatever you could call my entry point.. I take it that we recognized each other immediately as creatives and Channel 101 fans and now we’re talking about EACH OTHER’s work in present tense, which is a nice trip. He’s a great fella, whose Channel shows “Quarantine” and “Being Jason Whetzell” are knock-out punch classics and who’s audio-only Frequency shows are top notch as well. This is really a big discussion about making stuff, pop culture, and the 101-iverse. It was a lot of fun. In the theme of the 101-iverse is some related tunes; upcoming guest Chris Baldwin’s dreamy synth music, under the name ‘Hot Club’, music by past 101 contributors as well as TDS guests Jonah Ray and Kali Kazoo.. ALSO you’ll get to hear a full Frequency 101 episode by Jim Garrett (starring Adam Garland, Erin Pearce, Andy Petruzzo, Jared Wagenstein). What a week! Treephones is an artist’s artist and the “musical moniker” as it’s been written, of Stephen Trothen; though better described in our conversation. He’s putting out a beautiful concept album this Friday (May 7th) that you can listen to in any dimension and it will make you fall in love with music again.. PINK OBJECTS. If you’ve become jaded with music, I offer this to you as an example of someone at least STRIVING for genius, even if unintentionally. Now that I’ve let my emotionality set the bar super high, let me conclude this album description by adding that it’s something that you can put on and enjoy and it will only ask of you what you give it, it will only give you what you ask of it and it’s really nice. You’ll hear us talking in this and it’ll feature some songs from the album. If you’d like to know more, simply click the ‘Play’ button for this podcast episode.. seriously. Ontarian Stephen Trothen, is also a good friend whom I haven’t been in touch with until a few months ago, but have always kept a fondness for. We met as solo singer/songwriters in the late ‘00s during the death rattle of Myspace.. and I’m pretty sure I saw The Hangover with him. He’s as sweet a friend as his music is ear candy. Songs: “Matches”, “A Boarding Pass”, “A Map” & “Seeds” are all by Treephones, and from the album PINK OBJECTS; go visit Treephones on Bandcamp: https://treephones.bandcamp.com/ PINK OBJECTS will also be available on popular streaming platforms, and I trust you with the search box. LA native Diana Wright is a writer among other things, a fantastic one to boot, who's work you can hear/read in such popular mobile games as Star Trek: Fleet Command and The Simpsons: Tapped Out aka made-for-mobile iterations of my childhood.. wonderful! With a background in improv and sketch comedy, my guest's more recent contribution to Frequency 101 (the audio only version of Channel 101) was a kick-ass show she co-created with Annie Girard, called CAVEMAN COVE. - - - I regret not exploring my fascination with writing and the 'writer's room' more in the past, having had all kinds of splendid writers on this podcast before. It is a newer fascination of mine and Diana was kind enough to take me on my first mega journey into it. Most importantly we get to know Diana, growing up, becoming a writer and how she and her (also a writer) husband are doing work-wise, during such things as a.. y'know... pandemic. I'm honoured once again to chat with Actor, Writer, Director and so much more..Amy Walker. This time around (continuing from our chat on episode 91. re: short film 'Into Light') we took a deeper dive into the film-making process as well as the heart and mind of Soulfire Creations. I'm very glad I had the chance to explore with Amy: Where does her drive and passion come from? How does she approach doing such a wide variety of projects, roles, tasks? How many accents/dialects is she willing to grace my podcast with, right now?. This all gets answered, and then some, here on TDS. While you're listening and enjoying, please check out Amy's portfolio on the links/sites below; like, follow and share. Part 1 with Abed (March 4th) if you haven’t heard it, was recorded on Feb 20th and I think it was a super fun chat to have about the pop-culture that astounded established our love of creating things, as well as the first instances of performing or recording those ideas. Going into the panel for Frequency 101 we agreed to re-convene on Feb 28th - where like a better podcaster, put a focus on Abed. We did a deep dive into his creative journey both in and out of career, and did a little reflection on the hows and whys of it all. You could say we pick up with the short “Friends & Lovers” and take you all the way to Frequency 101’s “Enter the Dark”. Here we are now with Frequency 101, Episode 8 - March 2021! You get to listen to 9 AWESOME mini audio shows (5 minutes or less) and out of those 9, you vote for the 5 you want to hear another episode by; cancelling the rest. Kitchener/Waterloo’s Clarissa Diokno is a class act who’s payed many dues on the cover band stage, the karaoke stage (as both host and singer), has pursued acting and all matters of performing; I couldn’t be happier to chat with her after releasing her fantastic first original song. It just so happens that her debut single “Confusion” is a JAM, and naturally we discuss this. There’s a bit of a narrative starting in the dog days of Chainsaw nights in Uptown Waterloo, through the cover circuit, working in Los Angeles, and then back to KW, where in quarantine, this seasoned, silk-voiced and very down to earth ARTIST is still set on taking over the world. “Clarissa Diokno is a Singer-Songwriter who uses her music as therapy and connects with the listener through relatable lyrics of events in her life. Clarissa blends her smooth, soulful vocal style with the vibe and production of Pop and Contemporary R&B.” - from Clarissa’s official biography. Please enjoy our chat! Creator, writer, actor, phone-sexxer.. Abed Gheith (Los Angeles) is a lifelong story-teller (“Streetside” 1990s, Channel 101, Frequency 101) whose work in, and knack for story-telling, sense of humour, fusion of influences and more, I find undeniable. Just look at “Groove Fighters”, “Phone Sexxers”, “The Pop” and “Toon Wolf”… look at the Steve Perry character in “Yacht Rock”.. what about unforgettable pilots like “It’s Twissleton” and “The Muhammads”!? deny that!? I think NOT. As a not so un-remarkable footnote of course, his likeness and pop-culture library of a mind were loosely the inspiration for the NBC show ‘Community’s Abed character (see GVP ep. 6 for that story). Much like myself as a kid, Abed RPGd with friends, cassette-recorded audio entertainment and was entranced by the MAGIC of Disney and Star Trek mid-90s and before… this very specific set of things all together isn’t something I share in common with A LOT of people. Feel free to join us on that ride, I really enjoyed talking about it. Today, Abed and his longtime friend Sevan Najarian hold the current title for longest running show on Frequency 101 (Channel 101’s audio-only shindig) “Enter the Dark”,and through every type of terrain it seems, Abed follows his instinct to create worlds and tell stories! It would seem that comes with some interesting life stories! Listen and find out! Hey! So instead of an abrupt slow-down of the podcast, I'm using my platform to chat about it for 9 breezy minutes. I realized after the fact that I completely disregard those who probably do as much editing as I've been doing, AND something else, or AND having kids... Maybe I am just lazy. The point!: slowing down the output of this podcast for me is not only necessary for my mental health, but it allows space finally, for me to be an ARTIST again. If I were chatting about this to NO ONE in the room, or hypothetical listeners, I probably wouldn't have made any sense.. so I'm joined here by a pal in L.A., funny-man, current primetime Channel 101-er and swell guy - Chad Rietschel!! I was introduced to the wicked hot music by a young Ontarian by the name of Riley Michaels. Riley is everything at around 20 y/o that I was most definitely not! He’s super talented at singing, writing songs and playing guitar, as well as articulate and charming.. so it was a pleasure to have Riley on the show, to chat about music, some of his influences (Prince, John Mayer, etc.), and a breakdown about making and presenting the video for his brand new single: “Turn Off The Lights”!!! *available now on all streaming/digital purchase platforms. Brett Sheriff is a wonderful writer and performer, who’s been riding the wave of 2020 stumbling blocks in creative work, like everybody. I think his work in ‘Little Judd’s The Bachelor But With Dads on Channel 101 speaks for itself - so while looking forward to anything by that group or Brett as an individual, I think it’s safe to say that the result of effort (through all the challenges) will be worth the wait, and dynamite. Brett was kind enough to let me scatter the conversation in no particular, kind of even, order.. and I had a blast chit-chatting with’m! Brett grew up in Illinois, and now lives with roomates (fellow Judds) Chad & Chase, in Los Angeles. Forgive my little league bio writing style in that last paragraph, I’m not good at this stuff. L.A.’s Kate Freund is a multi-talented and wonderful show creator, writer, director, actor and more. I fell in love with her shows on Channel 101 of course, such as: ‘Mega Bitch Meltdown’, ‘The Vacationaires’ and ‘Legend of the White Tiger’.. there’s so much, just seriously, check out the links below, do yourself a favour and watch/enjoy all of it. Outside of 101 is even more great work in various genres like the Alex & Ariel film ‘On The Rocks’, ‘Creepshow’, ‘The Sarah Silverman Program’, and the holiday short she JUST put out prior to our conversation - A Christmas Wish! You can also catch Kate as she was that night, on her husband Rob Schrab’s delightful SHV show Found Crap. As you’ll hear me say, I couldn’t get enough of hearing Kate talk about how much she loves what she does and who she’s gotten to/gets to work with.. I would venture to say they probably feel equally fortunate to know and work with HER. It’s entirely non-sequential and there’s some sweet songs in here to celebrate that this 101 legend, is the guest on EPISODE 101 of this podcast! Justin Briner, 1/3rd of KW’s Pull The Plug Podcast (although I’m hearing things about a 4th ;), is a singer/songwriter whose made delicious solo/acoustic music and currently fronts a wicked 90s-saluting rock band called The Wilt Aways. We chat about our shared history on CJIQ, what it’s meant to be a part of PTP podcast for so long with Shannon and Justin G, making music of course!, as well as 90s Batman flicks and grabbing a coffee for relaxing vinyl record-hunt walks. Ps: WTF, TDS is 100 episodes old! Farewell listeners! JK. A small congrats to m’self though, no celebration, other than the ongoing joy and satisfaction of making the podcast I want to make. Washinton’s ROSIE CERQUONE is a classically trained multi-percussionist and a fantastic young singer/songwriter with a mesmerizing voice to boot! We met through mutual friend (last episode’s guest:) John Maksym, on the premise of Rosie singing the vocals for my “Rumspringa” tribute song, WHICH SHE NAILED! On the eve of us chatting on IG DMs, I listened to her first single “12” from the soon-to-be-released (January 8th, 2021) “The How & The Why” album, was enchanted, and knew I had to chat with Rosie on this podcast ASAP. Here finally, is that conversation! I additionally had the pleasure of chatting with JONY STUDIOS owner JONY MANSILLA, about the studio itself, him as an artist and how all facets have been evolved during the pandemic. Both guests were warm, which is worth millions in the Arctic, warmth, it’s a fact, look it up. Music in this episode by: Todd Donald & Rosie Cerquone, Kristina Stapelfeld, Rosie Cerquone & Sexdwarf. Singer/Songwriter John Maksym is a veteran of powerhouse alt-rock/punk band Breaching Vista (prior: Close To Home and Klutz), with a dedication to making music and performing that is motivating and moving to say the least. Now available, is a compilation of his 2020 releases, in an EP called ‘Fear’, with a dazzling photo-shoot to boot, by Meg McCormick. You’ll hear all five tracks on this episode, and I encourage you to see the links below (in the show episode notes) and get yourself a copy! In this episode though, you’ll hear us chatting about life, the EP, making music as well as John and I’s 20 years of friendship (as advertised), and it becomes a tedx/press-kit at some points, but it’s all in good fun and in the pleasure of chatting with the super uplifting, kind and hard-working person John is and always has been. Happy Holidays, one and all! It’s Channel 101’s Adam Garland & Erin Pearce on this one, they’ve been at the helm of 101 for a few years now, holding the fort, pocket-funding live events, turning it into a legit business.. all the while creating wonderful shows like “Story Hole” and this year’s Best Show at the 2020 Channies, “Breadtown”. Since I had the delightful Nick Hurley on the podcast and started finally vomiting love all over the Channel 101 universe, Erin and Adam have become somewhat familial in a sense, and this may sound crazy but yeah, like cousins almost. I love’m. They’re super creative, hard working, hilarious and I don’t know how they do so much.. but among things they produce on an ongoing basis, is content on Twitch, Patreon, Channel 101 the website, as well as virtual monthly screenings (during the pandemic) and Frequency 101… not without help or collaboration of course, but props nonetheless! Clearly I was overwhelmed by joy and happiness finally talking with these two, and I hope you’ll enjoy it also. From my hometown Kitchener/Waterloo to me in the Arctic, a fantastic person by the name of Allison was on this podcast via a phone-call recorded to voice-memo, while I recorded myself on Garageband; simple patch-work later brings you this very warm and nice-vibed chat between a couple of Canadian artists, dig it. For ALLISON POPROCKS, a piece of her heart lives in the Yukon, she’s a visual artist, occasional model, tattoo-getter, hair stylist, coffee enthusiast… and she was appreciatively game for chatting me up about all of these passions. You can find her first author credit (‘Dill and Daddy Llama’’) if you give her a follow on IG, expect her next (‘Avocado Rainbow Remix’) soon! To start off the show, ELLEN HOLLMAN who you’ll remember as Saxa on ‘Spartacus: Vengeance’, Dana in ‘Love And Monsters’; next year she’ll be in the fourth instalment of ‘The Matrix’. Derek’s Dead (Which you can pre-order on Apple TV now! Links below! Available one week today!) is the new feature-length comedy by writer, director and star Curt Neill! Curt first won me over in countless shows on Channel 101, scenes in Our Robocop Remake (2014), and recently-to-now, 2015’s On The Rocks (holy shit what an amazing flick!). L.A.’s Willy Roberts, a man with a million dollar smile and a creator, writer, actor and so much more on projects and shows in and out of Channel 101. He’s certainly done allot of 101 shows, iconic ones to boot and this is how/where I fell in-love with his work. He co-hosts the podcast Real Life Sci-Fi with his longtime friend Wade Randolph (another longtime 101’r), where they talk about aliens, ghosts, Sasquatch, conspiracies and more… I believe there’s no end to wonderful output from this dude. I’m honoured to have had the chance to chat with “digital fusion” musicians and composers Aivi “Aivi” Tran & Steven “Surasshu” Velema. The recording was semi-fresh off the release of their video game soundtrack for the new game Ikenfell. They started A&S by creating and releasing their first album ‘The Black Box’ in 2013, went on to compose and collaborate on Award-winning music for the Cartoon Network show Steven Universe, and continue making music for video games which I have to say is all brilliant and enchanting work. They were game to be on this podcast, and I had a delightful time chatting with them in and out of sequence, about their music, marriage and more. Please enjoy! Currently based in L.A., writer, actor and more Jack Kelly is a hilarious comedic talent and has a barrel of laughs you can find under the sketch comedy duo name ‘Something Picnic’ with Lars Midthun. The same duo created a show called “Nipple Sucking Aliens” for Channel 101 that I was drawn to right away and was a gateway to the rest. This chat/hangout was a long time coming and I’m glad you can finally hear it. We talk about just Jack!, growing up, where the comedy came from, working with Lars, NSA, the future and more! Within this episode and to start it off, I present a quick interview I was delighted to have with Amy Walker (a wonderful multi-talented artist & performer), who co-produced, wrote and starred in “Into Light”, an important story about the late Inez Milholland who literally dedicated and gave her whole life to human rights, and as seen in this vital short independent feature - to women’s right to vote! We talk about the genesis of the film, and the journey it’s taken so far.. see below where you can find it! Featuring music by Rob Szabo, jennylee and Smiling Beth. Writer, director, film-maker Alex Kavutskiy is one of the L.A.-based Channel 101 show makers I’ve been a fan of since I got into it. He’s got dark-humour in his stuff, and dark stuff, but is a super kind and bright guy who was incredibly nice to chat with. We chat about his work, how he got into film-making and what it’s been like up until now in and out of the biz. I give you credit in assuming you’ll listen and be able to define the conversation for yourself better than I could write this paragraph. I started off by updating you on all things voting, from the Presidential Election to the most recent Channel 101 screening (on Twitch), meaning I goofingly say a couple things about the first one, and sentimentally talk about the other. I had the good fortune of getting in-touch with currently-Montreal-based, Singer/songwriter Dana Debolt this summer. Immediately after hearing her music for the first time I was a big fan. “With You I Rise - Single” available now, as well as “Record Store”. It’s edgy, raw, fun and she’s got limitless potential yet.. So it was a must.. I had to talk to this genius, and she was great about it! Do you HATE awesome music and the artists who make it? If so, avoid this episode. I start off with some update-y kinda tings, including a big shoutout to the awesome monster that is the un-filtered shenanigan wagon of Kitchener Famous with Jesse and Jay. Also in the update: Much love for all of my American friends on this scary and historic day, and my lil’ 30 Podcasts photo + essay project. Guelph-Ontario’s Lauren Stein is an Improviser, who performs and can give all of the gifts a spectator desires; but when she’s not performing, is creatively or academically doing all she can to give the gift of what’s happening on-stage, to everyone (whether they know they need it or not). Her authorial debut ‘Improv At Work: Transform Your Career with Improv’, is the study of what Improv and Expressive Art offers by way of therapy, citing herself as the amazing example she is. Throughout, are improv games, documented experiences in teaching and participating, as well as a brief history of improv (what up, my nerds!). As a guest, great, I’m stoked if I can call her a friend and it truly did feel like having a warm chat over a “coffee” WITH a friend. Not only did she roll with the questions and conversation like a seasoned pro, but I felt more than warmly received as the the shambling mess I tend to be as a host. We both got to be hosts AND participants, and IN that, we got to know more about the positive impacts Improv (and it’s groovy fundamentals) has had on her development and that it can have on the world at large. Fun fact: Along with JP Sunga, Katy Topham and roommate Laura Bailey, Lauren is one of the only four people who’ve been a guest on the show in 2020, that i’ve seen-in-person (6 or more feet apart) this year! Jonah Ray does comedy, music, and talking… SO good. ‘Mystery Science Theatre 3000: The Return’ came on Netflix in 2017, and I’ve been a Jonah-phile ever since. I became an instant fan of SeeSo original ‘Hidden America w Jonah Ray’, CC’s ‘The Meltdown w Jonah & Kumail’ and a fan of nothing more than the podcast Jonah Raydio, where Jonah (a ‘Nerdist’ alumn) along with his friends Cash Hartzell & Neil Mahoney hangout, talk about music and jab each other silly. Through this podcast I discovered Jonah’s musical prowess (oh, a contributor for SPIN! btw) and bought the DOPE A F “You Can’t Call Me Al - EP”, a tribute to his friend and icon Weird Al Yankovic. Have I given the interweb-bots enough career titles? I’d like to highlight here in paragraph 2, that Jonah’s been dropping more mad science internally and physically, than creatively in the last while. We talk about the scope of his career and how he feels about his time in Los Angeles; where everyone for the most part, has seen him through adolescence. He talks about the strides he’s made to improve his health & outlook and about moving forward after years of a latched-on persona. A through-line, is both an appreciation for public creative work and our shared love of putting things together as children, that lead to everything after. This episode features 6 awesome songs, by Jonah Ray, Hop Along, Queen Ansleis & Kali Kazoo… most of which I discovered and fell for while listening to Jonah Raydio. David Seger, LA Actor, Director, Writer and more; Recently jumped back into primetime on the Channel 101 website, with he and Alex Kavutskiy’s ‘Trading up’. Stupendous! He has upwards of 10 hours of 5 minute episodes on there now, probably… dating back to the mid-2000s; classics such as ‘Car Jumper’, ‘Ikea Heights’, ‘Making Mistakes’, ‘Bleeding Out’ and ‘Water and Power: Miami’. Outside of 101, David has created original online videos for Community (NBC) & Sarah Silverman Program (Comedy Central), produced & edited the epic ‘Our RoboCop Remake’ (2014) “a fan-made remake of the 1987 Paul Verhoeven classic.” and put his magic touch as a commercial director on spots for: Zipcar, Redbull, MTV and Six Flags Theme Parks.. to name a few. We ended up focusing on how he got started, creativity, collaborating with people and of course Channel 101, which is always fun and interesting too! I think David’s work has always been/still is, razor-sharp, super fun and I know i’m not the only person who’s thrilled to see the newest episode by, starring and/or co-created by’m. Please visit any of the links I provide below (I know you have time to watch stuff *wink*) and enjoy an all-you-can-see buffet of Seger classics. Brad Gage, LA Actor, Writer and much more; starting in the summer of 2019 has applied his razor-sharp skills, creative intellect and talent, in a profoundly philanthropic/positive way. Real Feels is the name of a podcast and YouTube channel (also count Instagram) starting with poetry, and continuing into safe-space conversations where Brad invites people to truly see and share who they are.. I’ve not surprisingly seen people healing on it, he’s quite a warm person! Congruently with those conversations and maybe with a focus-shift for now solely to it, Brad Gage offers a series of video essays with an entertaining look/free educational take on ‘what is masculinity?’, ‘what is toxic masculinity’, ‘why haven’t we seen Mister Rogers for the masculine icon he is?’. Ultimately, this serves in asking men to identify their role in creating a future (hell, why not now?) that women don’t have to feel like their lives, bodies and minds are always in harm’s way. Since I’m in full agreement on this, it was nice to just listen and appreciate Brad’s soothing voice and well-articulated thoughts, and better understand why he’s so passionate about all of it. He really is a beautiful person, was all too kind to me I’ll say, so thanks, Brad (really feely). I’ll mention at the end here that ‘Brad Gage’ the profile on Channel101, is still home to the content that introduced me to’m, and will continually bring me joy, so feel free to peruse. : ) BRAD GAGE WEBSITE: http://www.bradgage.com/ FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/BradGagePage/ IMDB: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm3334706/ INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/beauradley/ TWITTER: https://twitter.com/bradgage YOUTUBE: https://www.youtube.com/user/bradgagecomedy REAL FEELS FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/realfeelsproject INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/realfeelsproject/ TWITTER: https://twitter.com/realfeelsproj YOUTUBE: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAgXmmMVVszIkKl4ViomvKg?fbclid=IwAR2Zu24kinQUcdbVscaRFKlckd28ZtWrjMiXU1hnid0bv6AT1YErfmj9DX0 SONGS/FEATURED AUDIO: Real Feels video essay- “The Surprising Masculinity of Mister Rogers” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I2mzxeViCko&t=86s Denise Chaila “Rí Rá” (from ‘Go Bravely’ released 2020) Buy the album on Bandcamp https://denisechaila.bandcamp.com/album/go-bravely Real Feels video essay- “Joe Rogan Doesn’t Understand Toxic Masculinity” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zx_2Lm9dB2Q CREDITS: Conversation recorded September 20th, 2020, at HQ in Gjoa Haven, Nunavut, Canada; via Zoom to Brad Gage in Los Angeles, California, U.S.A. Los Angeles Comedian, Actor, Writer, Show creator and more, Chad Rietschel is an intrinsically funny young man who I’m very glad I had the chance to chat with. If you haven’t seen him as ‘Timeloop Dad’ (aka Miles) in “The Bachelor but with Dads” on Channel 101, seriously, don’t talk to me (jk, but seriously). With 4 other gentleman known as ‘the Dads’, their voice can be seen/heard in all pre-pro-post roles, making comedy in L.A. (some, rooted in Chicago), from “Petty Theft” to “…Dads” and i’m frightfully excited for what they’ll do next. As a solo artist - Chad can be seen as funny side characters in such awesome 101 shows as “Wizards Corner”, “Binary 46” and (guest on TDS 82. KP Parker’s) “Rumspringa”! Chad’s first solo creation is in the understated yet mighty “Dan’s Dance Revolution”. In this episode we talk about how the (formerly known as) ‘Little Judd’ gang got started, creativity, comedy, Coldplay, Canada, working in a group vs. working on your own, Channel 101 of course, and more. It may be more or less interesting where I try to take it - whether you’ve heard of Chad and seen this wonderful work i’m referencing - or it’s your introduction to it. Either way, I was laughing allot, a wheezy laugh… and another great time was had. Please consider the links below at your disposal, they offer pathways to all of the great comedy we talk about, as well as the music featured in this episode, including a song by the AMAZING JoJo Worthington, whom I’d still love to chat with again, on this podcast! Victoria, British Columbia’s Jeff Bryant, is singer/songwriter, and a human being with a beautiful and connected spirit. He came onto the show to talk about not only his new EP “The Great Unknown”, but how the metaphorical ‘picture’ both on the album art but in his life, is a representation of fragility and honesty. Contrary to the connected spirit he has now, there was a long period of disconnection, depression and distance, from his ability to willfully craft songs and want to share them with the world. The journey to get to now was plagued by those things, making this release a big personal win, and hopefully only the beginning of more! In the meantime, I’m remembering Jeff fondly from his days in the late 2000s in a duo called The Human Statues, with Zachary Stevenson. They were based out of Toronto at the time, and rocked my world as guests on my first podcast in 2008. Even then, there was an intelligent approach to their offbrand yet worldclass group of songs and stage presence. How could I say no to chatting with Jeff again, who certainly agreed to reflect on that time, but fondly remember those days as I do, in memory? Enjoy our conversation about the music, the past, present and future, as well as some musings on life, humanity and the good ol’ creative process; paired with a few songs from ‘The Great Unknown’, a classic by The Human Statures and a rare treat from the archive! Meet Toronto rock/pop/metal/defies classification duo, siblings Bela & Fernando Ferreira; known musically as the outrageously talented and powerful band they are, The Manic Boys and Girls Club. This is also a long-awaited catch up and having-them-on-the-podcast finally… scenario? I’m so happy we found the time, and almost equally delighted at this moment, to put it out there! The Manic Boys and Girls club is two people that aren’t afraid to be seen as the human beings, as Beautifully flawed and fragile as we really are, and as a result of that, those of us who find and can adore their music, can feel like “hey, maybe these amazing anthems are written for us!?”. According to Béla and Fernando Ferriera, that’s actually the whole point - and if i’m paraphrasing poorly, hear THEM talk about it, in this interview!; which will be coupled by music, both recorded, for 1, and 2 live-off the floor performances, that you can watch as videos on their Facebook page. In this, we chat about their headspace, music-making process, break the ice on years of touring and the experiences bands can have both ideal, and nightmarish to performers… we also talk about each other and goof off, sorry not sorry! This is KP Parker!, an actor, writer & director from L.A., who creates larger-than-life characters you can’t help but cheer for, and places them in a world invariably magical yet frightening, like our own world. That’s my attempt at sounding bloggy, the point is, KP delivers an exciting, hilarious and real experience. For me, it started with KP’s scene-stealing opening scene to Ted Marsden/Nick Hurley’s “Street Cleaning” in 2017. Since then she’s ‘made partner’, exposed the ‘fraud’ and went to Albuquerque for some reason? These are all references to very well-crafted and delightful work she’s done as a performer and writer. She lights up m’screen once again with humility as Humility, a young Amish woman who may or may not have been re-programmed by our modern world, during “Rumspringa”. Now she’s on the podcast! and a wonderful guest at that! I decided not to give my whole opening schpeel about what 101 is, but I still fully endorse it, and always provide links, chances are if you’re reading this, you need only scroll down a bit. As far as the conversation!, I decided to dive in with KP about the experience of making/submitting shows, crafting ideas, deadlines, and most importantly, whatever feeling there is to be had in the Channel 101 community (a sense of self AND surrounded by people who truly get you). Before I stop writing and upload this awesome chat, my hometown sis (not-related), SUPER-talented singer/songwriter Paige Warner, has recently put out a new tune which as I’ve come to expect, is on fire! I asked if I could play it on the next ep., they said YES! Listen for “People Pleasin’” by Paige Warner. Meet comedian, actor, writer, filmmaker and more, Lars Midthun! From their hometown of Minnesota, Lars and his comedic-brother Jack Kelly (who joined forces to create ‘Something Picnic’) ultimately found a 2nd home for their brilliant-meets-absurd brand of comedy, in Los Angeles. In a world of infinite YouTube channels, the brand of comedy in Something Picnic is something unique and wild, and I could only leave it to Lars, here, to start explaining - and Jack Kelly, to complete when he hopefully comes on the podcast too!, but the shit is GOLD. One of my favourite things about chatting with Lars, was that getting along with and joking with’m felt IMMEDIATELY road-tested. I can’t tell you how wonderful that is for me to interact with, let alone record a podcast… of(?). Grammar. I feel that could be said with almost anyone I might be fortunate to have on, who makes shows for ‘Channel 101’ - where you’ll find Something Picnic’s hit primetime show “Nipple Sucking Aliens”. Do watch that show… In NSA, you’ll see their style shine, and you’ll see allot of that dynamic duo’s handsome faces. (Audio clips in this podcast episode). In this conversation with Lars Midthun, I went after his whole story; From growing up in Minnesota, finding his calling, getting into comedy, studying film in college, MAKING his first film, the award winning “The Way North” about his Grandfather’s post-WWII journey in Norway, and the beautiful family trek/collaboration involved - and then, how all of these experiences lead to making a show about aliens who suck people’s life-force from them, through their nipples. We go now to L.A., chatting with actor, writer, creator and more; including more recently a Channel 101 official podcast co-host... Nick Hurley! He's starred in such awesome shows as: "Demon$", "Thiefs" and the 10-episode (with extended finale) epic "Street Cleaning", which won for best editing at the 2016 Channy Awards. Nick seems like an all-around great person, and it was a blast talking shop-and-non-shop with someone who does, and participates in making stuff, and the kind of stuff I've been a longtime fan of! We started off talking about what Channel 101 is, and get introduced into the world of what it is offline, in Los Angeles, California, where’s it’s based. We talk about where it’s been, where it’s going (in these… times… gah… y’know…). Then we talk about all things Nick Hurley; his experiences, his work, and his existential journey working while making - what feels like the hustle, and what feels like the side hustle? I FOUND it all compelling, and it wasn’t the worst hosting I’ve done either! Please enjoy our chat. I even included some clip interludes, of audio from some sketch comedy and 101 shows! Meet film-maker, actor, broadcaster, and one bodacious dude; Florida’s Aaron Sperling. After several pleasant exchanges in the most kind of many Bill & Ted fan groups over the years, I quickly realized that the person behind it was most non-heinous, and needed to be on this podcast. We are NOW (August 18th) but TEN days away, from BILL & TED FACE THE MUSIC. Here on the show to talk about Bill & Ted, 80s cinema, fandom and of course - his life experience in showbiz, is Aaron, the fb creator behind ‘Friends of Bill & Ted’s Excellent Online Adventure’ a legacy! Currently stationed in Montreal, the worldly artist and singer/songwriter Vienna D’Amato Hall was kind enough to chat with me once again, to update me on all musical endeavours; from the more recent and will-be fourth act of album composition, to the multi-hyphenate chorus/collective of talented, awesome people in The Female Canon, known as ‘Ellis B. House’. “Society teaches women to be seen; what if women taught society how they see?” -from the Ellis B. House website. Vienna, perhaps from her background as an actor, brings a depth of drama, passion, honesty and excitement to her music that’s puts me in rarified air whenever I listen to it, it’s hard to ignore.. all of which can be experienced via her existing works ‘It’s What The Dog Saw’ (2015), ‘Red Light Temple’ (2016) and last year’s ‘Long-Stay Hotel’. In addition to all of that… I always find it exhilarating to chat 1-on-1 with this person. I always feel like their appreciation for philosophy, and ability to see the nuances of human life, experiences and the sitcom Seinfeld, always align with my own, but I still have so much to learn from them. So this time around, being the third, we deviated occasionally away from her work, to discuss the array of things she might have gotten out of growing up, living in Canada, the U.S. and Britain, her acting background, the deciding factor of her creative modus, and more! So… zooming from a Quarantine Hub in Edmonton, to Vienna in Montreal; maybe this episode will answer: What’s the deal with Vienna D’Amato Hall!? Waterloo Region podcaster Ryan Leacock comes with a background in film and design, and has already made a splash in the creative chatting with creatives show scene, ‘Creative People Podcast’, local to WR, and spread out to reach and connect with creatives worldwide. Add the fact that we’re both 35 and I’d say we’re twins, but if THAT’S the case, then where’s MY hair, God? Starting off with a personal diary at the beginning, like always, but a bit more this time.. I bring you into my chat with Ryan, intending once again on the personal life story, but ultimately relating on the internal and external struggles of making things, putting them out into the world, and continuing through all challenges to DO THE THING. The most helpful and important tool of all is knowing the fact that you are not alone. Ryan being the lovely person he is, served up allot of wisdom on this, so listen and take notes! Guelph, Ontario’s Laura Bailey is a multi-hyphenate - Singer, Songwriter, Vocal teacher, Improviser and more.. Come to think of it, I think many artists/performers lean towards more than one passion for passion sake. Laura is one of those few that combines all of those things into show-stopping shows, such as the positive message-infused, hilarious, and highly acclaimed ‘Clitoria’. Where does it begin for Laura, and where does it stop? With Corona-Virus constantly topping the charts, it seems like it’s the right time for this ridonkulously gifted woman to focus on something that she’s described as unique to what she’s done so far as a songwriter. We discuss that, in fact, we go all over the map from Laura’s childhood-era musical development and how all things SHOW have played the noteworthy roles they have in Laura’s life, up to and including now! I’d like to add that Laura Bailey is not only a fantastic artist and performer, like, we all KNOW THAT (you should at least), but what a warm and lovely guest also. Yay! New friends! Actor, Singer & more… Lindsey Alley was the child who was delivered the WOW experience from movie musicals and stage musicals, brought to her by parents, who worked in what we now refer to as ‘essential services’. A natural and exceptional performer early on, Lindsey’s getting cast in big stage productions halfway to 10 years old, was essential to her. She also spent her entire childhood - to - adolescence transition and experience, as a staple cast-member on Disney’s sensational and later iconized All new Mickey Mouse Club (1989-1996), and never lost the talent or the passion and ambition! I found it very interesting to hear firsthand, what it’s like to weather the storm of show business from so early in life, and then struggle to self-validate or maintain an ideal sense of worth within it, and throughout the course of one’s life. Lindsey Alley has done it; film, television, YouTube and on and off Broadway in a plethora of plays, musicals and cabaret shows; including her tour-de-force one-woman show “Blood, Sweat and Mouseketears” an up-to-date and living, comedic, chronicle of her journey through that storm; the highs, the lows, Mickey, Marriage, Motherhood… and more! As a theatre lover alone, i’m an enormous fan of Lindsey’s performing ability, showmanship, sense of humour and realness. We have Youtube, and now Covid-19, so I spent an ample amount of time one week, discovering and watching all the videos from “Blood, Sweat and Mouseketears” which I 100% have to see live, now, somehow… as well as Lindsey’s former ongoing video series ‘On The Patio’, the totally real, but seemingly surreal and hilarious conversations between her and her sweet Mother. Was it a ridiculous “hail mary pass” to reach out to such an exemplary talent, let alone one of my favourite Mouseketeers? Yes. Did it end up somehow being a pleasure for us both!? Rob Szabo, Toronto singer/songwriter, music producer (multi-Juno nominated), podcaster and so much more.. Is also one of my good friends, whom after many years of working in music, and wanting to - has now done so - and launched (in February) his own podcast; And Sometimes... Why? with Rob Szabo. It's a wonderful show, equally full of curiosity and keen interest, in warm conversations. Rob returns to the show after a year or two to chat about whatever. I could have leant into his life story, but we split the atom as we tend to, on the finer intellectual ground of being in the interviewer shoes, and more present life stuff. You can always peak into our life stories in fragments over many episodes in a row of each of our shows, just sayin', don't be shy. Nonetheless, it's with a lot of love and joy that I present Rob Szabo and I's discussion, with some of Rob's beautiful solo-artist original music weaved in. Mary-Catherine Pazzano, Waterloo region jazz singer, vocal teacher, recording artist, classic movie buff and more, finally returns to the podcast, again? This will be Mary's third time appearing and performing, for moi; the second time for this podcast specifically, and I couldn't be more honoured. She's a classically trained jazz singer (what!?), quite a fantastic piano player although she might dispute that, and continues to sport a splendid group of songs in an album called "You're Gonna Hear From me" available in links, hint. So why have this wonderful human back on, again, if we've already talked about her music, teaching life and the world of jazz music? Well, firstly because I believe we've become friends over time, and she's wicked awesome company to chat with.. and if that wasn't good enough, this time, we spend ample time nerding out over b&w movies and taking a look at her personal and musical upbringing. She even recorded some musical performances for the episode, that she would have otherwise performed in-person!, but.. you know.. Katy Topham, Kitchener/Waterloo (Singer/songwriter) is one of those longtime friends, where you can instantly tell i’m not just comfortable with, but comfortable with enough to interject with bullshit, but who thrives on it and bullshits back with me. We had a fantastic conversation of course, we talked about her music, her long period of distance with music and the hard times and other times, that shaped and evolved her into the strong and amazing woman she is today. We talk about her recent marriage and her and her husband Ryan’s more recent child-having! And it’s all very in, and out, of sequence, of those things. We also have our long-standing friendship and co-worker-ship that in itself has some stories to tell and laugh about. Plus, I insert (near the top of the episode), Katy’s newest single “I Just Don’t Feel Like Lovin’ You”, which is freakin’ fantastic!! One more thing, sunshine and warmth, so exotic and grand! I’ve been in the arctic too long. Austin Gray (Singer/Songwriter) from Utah, is formerly from several different places, most importantly PureVolume.com, THE music/social networking website of 2004. Austin’s taken his love of music and DIY recording all around the states, in various formations, bands and projects, to ultimately wind-up in the midwest U.S. of A. where we catch up over coffee on Zoom, and chat about many things, including his FANTASTIC new song “Lost Time”. One of many great things in the ‘silver linings playbook’ of this awful covid-time, is the excuse to reach out to far away friends, especially when everyone you know is far away. I can’t believe how many different apps we’ve used over the years to stay in touch. We take a look into Austin’s beginnings and his approach to music. Due to unforseen choppy-ness in the Zoom connection, we resolved to continue the chat another time soon. I beg you to check out Austin’s southern rock meets brit-rock sound in the single, available digitally everywhere! JP Sunga (a brilliant KW Singer/Songwriter) is one sweet guy, a devoted husband, a devoted papa, and after a fair amount of time and distance from his art, a re-devoted singer/songwriter. Why did art mean so much to JP in the first place? What role did his family play in the early days of growing up/learning how and becoming musical, and what does he bring to his own role in family life and going forward? Having been at this and super-talented since the 90s, it's time for this splendid individual to shine bright like... a shiny rock or stone! It's time for JP to spread... his... peanut butter!!! JK on those puns! Point being that JP and I will be talking about his lovely album project; with a single having been dropped on JAN 1, and another on the way! PS: JP and his family are down-the-street neighbours : ). // Featuring music by JP Sunga; the new song "For Your Sympathy" featuring Mark Pelli, available tomorrow (May 29th) just visit the destinations listed below!
