I'm living in the paradox, Both powerful and powerless, The more careful I am with what I take in, The easier life will be to digest. Mars joining the Sun in Scorpio underlines the reality that things are not as they appear. Scorpio knows better than to trust and give yourself away blindly. In this week's mantra, "careful" simply means mindfulness, awareness, and consciousness. The adage is "garbage in = garbage out," which reminds us to watch what we are exposing ourselves to, who we're hanging with, what we're watching, reading, and how we're spending our time. Let's ask ourselves quite often these days, Why???" "Why" will take you down to the next level, and the subsequent "why?" will continue to take you down to the next level. If you keep up the self-inquiry, you can get down to the REAL reason you make the choices and take the actions you choose to take. Then the next question is, "Is this helping me evolve?" Is what I'm doing and who I'm with helping me on my evolutionary journey to return to Source, or causing me to separate further?" The answer to that question may lead to changes in your course of action, relationships, and anywhere else you have invested your energy, including financial and sexual. Onward and upward may we go! Of course, a proper and fitting song for this week/month is Santana and Everlast's "Put Your Lights On!" https://youtu.be/9eJgTUUw4Pw And how about that thumbnail? I had the great fortune of meeting Sequin Kay, the artist who created it as part of her zodiacal series. Can't Knock the Shuffle

Dante Ross isn't an artist in the traditional sense, but the music industry exec/A&R/producer/engineer had a hand in dozens of classic records and is responsible for helping to cultivate the careers of some of hip hop's biggest names. In the 90s, Dante was hired by Elektra Records as the first hip hop A&R man – not just Elektra's first, but the record industry's first. Dante signed artists such as Brand Nubian, KMD, Leaders of the New School, Busta Rhymes, and Ol' Dirty Bastard, to name a few. Along with his friends John Gamble and Geeby Dajani, Ross was also one third of production group Stimulated Dummies, who worked with many of those acts behind the boards as well. Dante played a significant role in crafting the sound and songs on House of Pain leader Everlast's breakthrough solo album, 1998's Whitey Ford Sings the Blues, and would later co-produce the Everlast and Carlos Santana song “Put Your Lights On,” on the latter's Grammy-winning smash album ‘Supernatural.' Dante is still active in the business to this day, and has signed and worked with more recent artists like Lil Dicky, Made in Tokyo, and Marlon Craft. And this fall he will release ‘Son of the City,' a memoir detailing his life as a crucial player in hip hop's Golden Era. In this episode, we discuss: 3rd Bass "Kick 'Em in the Grill" feat Chubb Rock ('Derelicts of Dialect,' 1991) Del the Funky Homosapien "Ya Lil Crumbsnatchers" ('I Wish My Brother George Was Here,' 1991) Ol' Dirty Bastard "Brooklyn Zoo" ('Return to the 36 Chambers: The Dirty Version,' 1995) Everlast "Tired" ('Whitey Ford Sings the Blues,' 1998) De La Soul "Me, Myself, and I" ('3 Feet High and Rising,' 1989) Pete Rock and CL Smooth "All Souled Out" ('All Souled Out,' 1991) Brand Nubian "Step to the Rear" ('One For All,' 1990) Dante Ross: danteross.com cantknocktheshuffle.com questionshiphop.com instagram.com/seandammit  twitter.com/seandammit  Email: cantknocktheshuffle@gmail.com Learn more about your ad choices. Listen to the interview here!Tell me a little about yourself and your writing.I’m an odd bird who found a home with writing paranormal. Yep. I said it. I think admitting it is really the first step to total acceptance.Tell me about the story that you've created a soundtrack/playlist for. I’ll talk a little about DEMONIC DESIRES (from Ellora’s Cave) and the soundtrack I listened to for it. DEMONIC DESIRES centers around a group of demons, right hand men to Lucifer, who broke ranks and saved lives rather than taking them. It’s the first book in the stories of the Lost Warriors redemption. The opening scene is a really dark, twisted sex one. My playlist needed to reflect this so I went with Danzig’s Underbelly of The Beast to kick it off. The story then takes a lighter note, introducing you to the characters out of their normal element. I brought in a good deal of Celtic flare for this because the heroine is a warrior from Valhalla. What is your playlist? Why did you choose these particular songs?I’ll give you a snippet of the list because there over 3500 items in it with 230 hours of play time… and this is JUST for DEMONIC DESIRES. I make a new list for every book. To your writing?I don’t watch many movies or much in the way of TV. Music has always been a love of mine. I can still remember the day MTV came on air for the first time. I was six and it totally wiped the floor with Sesame Street. I watched faithfully from that day forward until they started on the reality shows. I had to put up a white flag then. Let the record state that I miss Martha Quinn. Oh, and MTV actually playing music. To me, music is another form of escapism. It can set the mood for you or it can fix the mood you’re in. It’s what you make of it. I love all music, from classical to the rhythmic beating of Native American drums. You name it, I like it—Rock, Classical, Dark Metal, MallCore, Pop, Country, Jazz, Rap/Hip-hop, Foreign (I’m a huge lover of the Italian music scene), Oldies. What kind of music do you like to write to?I’ll make the playlist as I write. If I know I’m entering a really dark scene, I’ll incorporate that vibe into the playlist. When I’m coming out of it, I lighten the mood. I do have one rule, if a Bee Gees song cannot be incorporated into the mix then I’m doing something wrong. Yes. I do have playlists with AC/DC and The Bee Gees sharing airtime. If this story was made into a movie, who would you want to do the soundtrack?I’d like to see Rob Zombie team up with The Cranberries (who can tell me where they are and if they’re still putting out records… I’d love to buy them). I think the collaboration would be odd but I’m betting it would work. Anything else you'd like to say about music and writing/creating?I have a lot of respect for anyone who can create music. It’s their story, put out there for the world to hear.To learn more about Mandy, visit her website.Next week, I interview author Paul Liadis, AKA The Struggling Writer.
