On this flashback of Take It Personal, we're hitting you with a combined remastered version of episodes 29 & 30, our Native Tongues Tribute. This 12+ hour episode features music from the most important, and influential hip-hop collective we've ever seen. With the help and hustle of both DJ Red Alert and Chris Lighty, the Native Tongues were a force to be reckoned with. The Jungle Brothers paved the way for groups like De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest and Black Sheep. Prior to The Flava Unit, Queen Latifah was this crew's Den mother. Along with her protege Monie Love, they were both instrumental in helping the female movement in hip-hop. The Native Tongues provided plenty of classic albums, countless anthems and produced more offspring than Joe Jackson. The Natives helped jumpstart the careers of Busta Rhymes, Chi-Ali, Mos Def, J Dilla and have influenced artists such as Brand Nubian, K.M.D., Common, The Beatnuts, Bush Babees, The Roots, Slum Village, Little Brother, Kanye West, Black Star, Pharrell, Hieroglyphics, The Pharcyde, J5, Kedrick Lamar, Pusha T, Andre 3000 and even Nas. They've influenced everyone! The Native Tongue brand was strong despite some internal conflict, growing pains and different career paths. They left an everlasting impression on hip-hop. It's our privilege to present to you our Native Tongues Tribute! www.takeitpersonalradio.com www.patreon.com/TakeItPersonal

Our final episode in February dedicated to afrocentric hip-hop is a review of the debut album Holy Intellect from group Poor Righteous Teachers, released in 1990. Similar to Brand Nubian, PRT members Culture Freedom, Father Shaheed and front man Wise Intelligent put the teachings of the 5% nation at the forefront of their music while they kick rapid-paced rhymes over producer Tony D's boom bap beats. https://www.instagram.com/str8_the_clippa?igsh=cTBzNnFhenRkN3Nl&utm_source=qr https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100086006336425&mibextid=hu50Ix https://www.tiktok.com/@brandonhetzel996?_t=8kWF5xzxPl1&_r=1
Bronx-born producer Buckwild was, and continues to be, instrumental in this ever-growing movement. For the past few years, hip-hop producer, Buckwild, has contributed a countless amount of classics to a game that's a mere 20 years into its prime. Alumni of the D.T.I.C.(Diggin' in the Crates) school of beat making, Buckwild-a former DJ-first earned a respectable reputation as one of New York City's most bought mix-tape DJ's in the early 90's. Under the guidance of his neighbors/mentors and fellow established artist Lord Finesse of Diamond D, Buckwild made the jump from DJ to producer with 1993's "Shit Is Real" featuring both Diamond, Finesse along with Sadat X of Brand Nubian. The song would be the first of many underground classics constructed at the hands of Buckwild. A year later, Buckwild provided the unforgettable backdrop for O.C. for what became the classic, "Times Up". Soon thereafter, Buck found himself remixing tracks for underground mainstays, such as Funk Doobiest, ("Rock On"), The Alcoholiks ("Damn") and Artifacts ("C'mon Wit Da Get Down" w/ Busta Rhymes) to name a few. By 1995 it was clear as day; artist requested a "Buckwild Remix" on their single releases. Buckwild's remix clout soon blossomed into album cut request. For the next few years, Buckwild conjured up a slew of classic backgrounds for underground delegates such as Mic Geronimo, Organized Konfusion, O.C. as well as Capone-N-Noreaga just to name a few. An advance in Buckwild's already promising career took place in1996 when he provided the late, great Notorious B.I.G. with the mellow exotic-backdrop for "Story To Tell", off the multi-platinum release, Life After Death. The song became one of the greatest rap-tales in hip-hop history. Soon thereafter Buckwild accommodated memorable backgrounds for legends like Jay-Z, Kool G. Rap and the late Big Pun, respectively. Just when the world thought they'd heard the Bronx vet at his peek, Buckwild supplied Bad Boy Artist Black Rob, with the precise background for an idea Black Rob had named "Whoa". Sure enough, the aptly titled, "Whoa", became the biggest record of 2000 and helped push a mildly anticipated album towards platinum status. That same year, Buckwild was named one of The Source Magazine's Producers of the Year. Having supplied Bad Boy with some of its most memorable hits, Buckwild was given a position among P.Diddy's prestigious Hit Men; a group of producers who supply P.Diddy with his chart topping sound. At the dawn of the new millennium, Buck continues to push towards the next level heights by working with an array of artists. Not one to forget his roots, Buckwild continues to provide the established and the non-established with outstanding backdrops that provide a particular feel for each respected artist; thus continuing to push this hip-hop-movement toward the new century. Was September 29, 1998, the most significant album release date in hip-hop history? Cultural writer and critic Jacinta Howard joins Panama Jackson to answer that question. Jay-Z, A Tribe Called Quest, Outkast, Brand Nubian, and Black Star all released albums that day that shaped their careers in significant ways, and it may have been the last time that a Tuesday drop had that kind of star power. prt performed at 50 years of hip hop celebration in trenton. Poor Righteous Teachers was a hip hop group from Trenton, New Jersey, founded in 1989.[1] Often referred to as PRT by its fans, Poor Righteous Teachers was known as a socially and politically conscious hip hop group, with musical content inspired by the teachings of the Nation of Gods and Earths. Wise Intelligent, as the lead MC, was the most visible and well known member of the group. Culture Freedom provided vocals and production, and Father Shaheed served as a DJ and producer. About.com ranked the group's lead MC, Wise Intelligent, number five on its list of the 10 Most Underrated Rappers, calling him "one of the most creative MCs of our time."[2] PRT debuted in 1989 with the release of the single "Time to Say Peace" b/w "Butt Naked Booty Bless." The trio released its first album, Holy Intellect, in 1990,[3] amid a number of similarly pro-Black albums such as Public Enemy's Fear of a Black Planet, X-Clan's To the East, Blackwards, and Brand Nubian's One for All. While not as commercially successful as these albums, Holy Intellect received critical acclaim and spawned the group's only major radio hit, "Rock Dis Funky Joint." PRT returned in 1991 with its second album, Pure Poverty.[3] The album was not as commercially successful as its debut, and was not as acclaimed. The lead single "Shakiyla (JRH)", became a minor rap hit that year. The group's third, and possibly most successful release to date, Black Business, was released in 1993.[3] Sales were once again limited, but the album was a critical success. The album's lead single, "Nobody Move", received little radio airplay. After a three-year hiatus, PRT returned as a group in 1996 with its fourth album, The New World Order.[3] Released in a new Hip Hop era, the album received little attention, failing to reach the Billboard 200 album chart. The album's lead single, "Word Iz Life", was barely able to reach the Hot Rap Singles chart, peaking at the chart's lowest position, #50. Despite the lack of significant attention, the album, like its past releases, received significant acclaim. In 2001, Poor Righteous Teachers dropped the rare underground release Declaration of Independence.[3] In 2006, Cha-Ching Records released Rare & Unreleased, a compilation of rare Poor Righteous Teachers songs and remixes.[4][5] PRT had a short feud with rapper YZ over reels of tapes that YZ would not give back to their owner, PRT.[6] Father Shaheed died on May 26, 2014, from a motorcycle accident.[7] References[edit] ^ Huey, Steve. This week on Dopey! We are joined by Hip Hop pioneer, A&R Maestro, Producer, Writer, Creator, Author Dante Ross! Dante came up on the Lower East Side in the mid seventies. He was known as a friend to the Beastie Boys and worked with RUSH management and Def Jam records. Selling cocaine with Mike D! Making fun of Joey Ramone! That was before his music career kicked off working with De La Soul, and grew as hip hop grew. Dante signed and worked with acts including Brand Nubian, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, Queen Latifah, Leaders of the New School, Busta Rhymes, Everlast and Carlos Santana among many others. All along the way drinking and partying until he found himself nestled in long term recovery. PLUS emails, a voicemail from Florida and much much more on a hip hop heavy episode of the good old Dopey Show. More on Dopey: Dopey Podcast is the world's greatest podcast on drugs, addiction and dumb shit. Chris and I were two IV heroin addicts who loved to talk about all the coke we smoked, snorted and shot, all the pills we ate, smoked, all the weed we smoked and ate, all the booze we consumed and all the consequences we suffered. After making the show for 2 and a half years, Chris tragically relapsed and died from a fentanyl overdose. Dopey continued on, at first to mourn the horrible loss of Chris, but then to continue our mission - which was at its core, to keep addicts and alcoholics company. Whether to laugh at our time in rehab, or cry at the worst missteps we made, Dopey tells the truth about drugs, addiction and recovery. We continually mine the universe for stories rife with debauchery and highlight serious drug taking and alcoholism. We also examine different paths toward addiction recovery. We shine a light on harm reduction and medication assisted treatment. We talk with celebrities and nobodies and stockpile stories to be the greatest one stop shop podcast on all things drugs, addiction, recovery and comedy!

For the last decade plus, Will “Brain A” Currier has cooked up a curiously genre-defiant blend of electronic music and post-punk grind, delivered with lo-fi hip-hop ease. Known for his work with cyberpunk artist N8NOFACE and now defunct instrumental outfit The Analog Sweat, Currier is currently holed up in his desert lab fine tuning work on a forthcoming project named BRAINFIEND, a collaboration with rapper Mykr Fiend X of the longest running hip-hop collective in Phoenix, The Avenue of the Arts Crew, which features collabs with Myka 9 of Freestyle Fellowship, Grandmaster Caz, and Sadat X of Brand Nubian. His beats can also be heard in WASTOIDS season one. For Yo! WASTOIDS, Currier offers a retrospective mix—15 years in 15 minutes—featuring his beat juggling skills, sound collage edits, and collaborations with N8NOFACE, Sadat x, Myka 9, and more. Episode 101 is an ode to 1990. This was a defining moment in hip-hop as the musical tides started to turn. The 80s were done, as were many of the styles and genres to come out of that decade. Rap dominated the airwaves and took over pop culture as we know it. While both MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice were at the top of the pop charts, it was influential voices like Chuck D, Ice Cube and Shock G that provided the sounds cherished to this day. The Afrocentrism movement was huge as legendary groups such as X-Clan, Poor Righteous Teachers, Jungle Brothers, A Tribe Called Quest, Brand Nubian and Public Enemy provided anthems throughout 1990. That same year, we had classics that were bound to wreck your body and say turn the party out…Treat ‘Em Right, Bonita Applebum, The Humpty Dance and Jingling Baby. It wasn't just music, the movies that came out in 1990 still hold a special place in our hearts. Watching House Party over and over. Laughing at Full Force saying everyone smells like pussies or when Chill couldn't stop bumping the table while dragon-breath Bilal would try to mix. Who doesn't watch all of Goodfellas every time it's on TV? Doesn't everyone do the same yearly Christmas ritual and watch Home Alone? Air Jordan V's were on every kid's feet. The Simpson's were on every kid's TV. Posters of Bo Jackson, Barry Sanders, Michael Jordan and Wayne Gretzky were on every kid's bedroom wall. It wasn't just any year, it was one of the greatest. On episode 101, we pay homage to one of the most important years in hip-hop -- 1990! www.takeitpersonalradio.com www.patreon.com/TakeItPersonal Follow us on Instagram @takeitpersonalradio

Episode 64 is the 4th show we've recorded during this damn quarantine. Despite some technical difficulties and R.A. battling what we thought was the coronoavirus, we put together a 30-track homage, including a lengthy comedic and sometimes contentious interview. Check out part 2 that features our interview! We discuss the new album All My Heroes Are Dead. We talk Biggie and boxing. We discuss the days of Jive Records and working with Rawkus. We even learn about the super-group he was once apart of with Prince Paul & Bumpy Knuckles. Like most of our interviews, we do a chronological trip back to memory lane. Episode 61 was recorded prior to all this madness. We don't know how many episodes we'll be able to produce during these times, but we'll try our best to keep you entertained for awhile. Our MF DOOM and D.I.T.C. tributes are still in the works, but there is always a little calm before the storm and the next two episodes are definitely that calm. Let's all try to relax and enjoy this time we all have to ourselves as we get lost some hip-hop music. We got 90s flavor from Tha Alkaholiks, Brand Nubian, Double X Posse, Diamond D, Ghostface Killah, Funkdoobiest, Kool G. Rap, Real Live, Royal Flush, World Renown, Yaggfu Front, The Artifacts, Al Tariq, Mic Geronimo, Big Noyd, Smoothe Da Hustler, GZA and King Just. We also got some "newer" tracks from Meyhem Lauren, Eto, Ill BIll, Vinnie Paz, Royce Da 5'9 and Grafh. Plus we had a impromptu phone call with fan favorite, Meyhem Lauren. He stopped by briefly to talk food, fitness and Florida with us. Our friend, Vanderslice also hoped on a call. If you know Slice, you know he is never short on words nor has any filter. That's why we love him and ask you support his latest project Trendsetter as he plans on taking a little up north trip. Enjoy Episode 61 and remember to wash your damn hands! As the summer comes to an end, we felt the best way to transition was to let the music do the talking. We have new joints by Redman, Westside Gunn, DJ Muggs, Redman, Dres, Blueprint, Apollo Brown & Locksmith, plus we sprinkle in smooth favorites by Little Brother, Hieroglyphics, Felt, O.C. and take it back to '93 with classics by Fat Joe, Ultramagnetic MC's, Brand Nubian, MC Breed, Tha Alkaholiks and KMD to name a few. We also catch-up with our longtime friend Supastiton, who shares some great stories and was kind enough to allow us to remix one of his tracks too. Sit back, relax and enjoy the musical journey and peace to all of the Stevie Wonder fans out there - this cover is for you!
