A (relatively) in-depth analysis of the rock classic (Don't Fear) The Reaper by Blue Öyster Cult (as well as some other stuff) in just under thirty minutes. The song, written and sung by lead guitarist Donald 'Buck Dharma' Roeser is taken from the 1976 album Agents of Fortune and explores the theme of eternal love and the inevitability of death. The band name Blue Öyster Cult features an umlaut. The 'metal umlaut' (also known as röck döts) has also been used in the names of several rock or heavy metal bands such as Queensrÿche, Motörhead, the Accüsed, Mötley Crüe, Spın̈al Tap and Green Jellÿ.The song has been featured extensively in film, TV and media: Stephen King named the song as one of the inspirations for his novel The Stand (the lyrics are quoted at the beginning of the novel). The song also appears as the opening theme for the 1994 TV serial based on the novel. The song can be heard playing in a car in the 1978 film Halloween and was used again in the 2022 sequel Halloween Ends, during the ending credits. It can be heard playing on a van radio during the 2022 horror film X and is played during the end credits of The Simpsons episode 'The Parent Rap'. The song has been featured in two series on Netflix: '1899' and 'Orange Is the New Black' and was even the subject of a Saturday Night Live comedy sketch in 2000.In this episode I am in discussion with Dr. Andrew Webber.Mathew Woodallhttps://buymeacoffee.com/lownoiseWhy buy me a coffee?Low Noise is proudly ad-free. In this 255th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.In this week's episode, we discuss how to avoid confusion between moral and analytical differences, especially when it comes to politics and the state of America. Probably you have people in your life whom you love, with whom you disagree adamantly about politics. If you believe those people to share your values, then you probably just disagree about what you have seen, and what it means—rather than believing that they are fundamentally bad people. Gods of the underworld are not the same as gods of death, nor are the guides the same--not even the Grim Reaper.Hades is the minder of the subterrestrial realm, just as Zeus and Poseidon are the minders of the Mountain (... and the sky) and the Sea (tough to argue for pluralizing those realms).  Pluto is the same figure, adopted by the Romans AFTER he got his new stage-name. Osiris is the keeper of the dead in Kemetic (Egyptian) lore, and one of the judges at the table. Hel is the Norse keeper of the dead, though she was a giant, and not a typical god.The Grim Reaper is a psychopomp: a guide for the recently deceased. The Valkyrie, and the  Shinigami are old variants on this idea.Yama was the first to meet death, and after finding heaven, has made it his mission to guide others.Anubis, anciently a simple jackal, has morphed into the commanding protector of the dead in Egypt. Xolotl is the Aztec guardian of the freshly entombed, symbolizing the dog to guide people into the afterlife.Mercury is the Roman response to the Greek Hermes, and he is said to guide the dead to the docks where they should find Karon, the ferryman. The Etruscan version of Karon is perhaps a little less friendly. Vanth is a more benevolent guide to the Etruscans, though you might not guess it from her appearance. Personifications of death--the true gods of death, if there can be any--are simply named "death" in the various tongues of the ancient world: Thanatos, Mors, Mot, etc. They may be among the most anciently feared gods in human history. All this and more.... Support us on Patreon or you can get our merch at Spreadshop.Join the Community on Discord.Learn more great religion factoids on Facebook and Instagram.

What's your excuse? 42:46 | Exploring Different Opportunities and Traveling: Pack your bags or your day with experiences that enrich. 43:05 | Trying Different Jobs and Starting a Business: It's never too late to reinvent your professional self. 43:11 | Staying Active and Youthful at Any Age: Jay and Dan share tips on keeping the body spry as the years pile on. 43:13 | Embracing the Present Moment: Why today is always the best day to start anew. 44:26 | Learning from Mistakes: Turn every 'oops' into an 'a-ha' with age-earned wisdom. 44:35 | Overcoming Self-Doubt and Societal Expectations: Break free from the shackles of doubt and dance to the beat of your own aging drum. Key Takeaways Aging is a privilege. Embrace it with open arms and an open heart. It's not about looking young, it's about feeling vibrant. Confidence trumps wrinkles any day. Balance is crucial. As we age, balancing our health with our desires becomes more crucial. Change is inevitable, growth is optional. Choose growth, every single time. Life is short. Focus on what truly matters—relationships, experiences, and the joy of being alive. Tune in, laugh, learn, and maybe shed a tear or two as Jay and Dan guide you through the realities of aging without filters. This is an episode I wrote in the Southern Studio, so I may  have been in a better mood than usual to write it than I ordinarily am, given  the subject matter. When Blue Öyster Cult first got together, they were a college band from Stony Brook, New York. That's not far from where I grew up. Oddly, none of the band's original members are from Long Island. Two of them grew up in New  York City, one in upstate NY and the last was born in Alabama but moved to the Island as a child. Go figure. They took on the name Soft White Underbelly first and used that from 1967-1969. Then they caught a bad review for a show and decided to change their name. After a few permutations they landed on Blue Öyster Cult, which they didn't really like. But the fact is, they didn't care enough at that point to come up with anything else. I touched on this briefly in the episode itself, but it's pretty clear that the band members were still pretty fond of "Soft White Underbelly". Oftentimes when they played smaller clubs around the NY Metro area, that's the name they'd use in those clubs. So when fans of BOC saw an ad in the local newspapers touting that band in the 1970s and 80s, they knew they were actually in for a Blue Öyster Cult show. "Don't Fear the Reaper" is notable for several different reasons. It was a new recording studio and they experimented with their sound in different ways. That would include having Buck Dharma sing the lead. (Dharma is the lead singer on "Godzilla" and "Burnin' For You", so they may have hit on something there.) You'll hear about some of the bells and whistles they use. And yes, you'll hear a little bit about Saturday Night Live and how they feel about it. Click here for a transcript of this episode. Stephen Graham Jones has two books out this year. One of them is the third book in the Indian Lake trilogy, THE ANGEL OF INDIAN LAKE. It's the epic conclusion to an amazing story. What better way to celebrate its arrival, than to take a closer look at all three of the books. So, that's what I decided to do.Greg Greene - a noted Stephen Graham Jones scholar. He's managed to collect all of Stephen's published books (not an easy task), and is working his way through finding collections, etc. that Stephen has been published in. Greg has read about half of SGJ's books.Greg's also the guy behind the Jade Daniels is my Final Girl shirt, which you can get at jadeshirt.comJesse Lawrence - Been reading SGJ since the early 2000s. In Jones' own words, Jesse has probably read more of Stephen's writing than almost anybody. Including things never published. Jesse has been enthusiastically championing SGJ for decades. My guest on this episode of Talkin' Rock is Blue Oyster Cult's Eric Bloom. This is the first time we've talked and I found him to be very easy to speak with.  For those of you in the southeast Michigan area, B.O.C is playing the Royal Oak Music Theater on February 25th. Eric is looking forward to the show, but he seemed happier to be coming to Detroit for a slice or two of Detroit-style pizza. LOL I asked Eric to recall something about the famed "Black and Blue" tour with Black Sabbath in the early 80s. He fondly spoke about the tour, playing Madison Square Garden, and more.  We also talked about the cultural impact that the band had. From the "Cowbell" scene on SNL, to use in horror movies. He spoke to not being aware of the use of "Don't Fear The Reaper" in the original Halloween movie. Speaking of movies, yes, Eric is a Godzilla fan! "Buck wrote the song, but we used to make Godzilla jokes in the band house." He also told me about some new live vinyl albums that are dropping this year. They recorded some special shows last year and they're dropping them throughout the year. He also let the cat out of the bag that they're going to be releasing some unheard B.O.C before the summertime. This is going to have to satisfy the diehard fans because he doesn't see them making any new music anytime soon.  A few weeks back while talking to David Ellefson, he brought up GHOST and said they reminded him of Blue Oyster Cult. Eric doesn't see it "I don't sorta get it, but other people might think so." We also talked about Metallica, his video game addiction, Spinal Tap, and more. Fun conversation with Eric on Talkin' Rock!
