Culling does work and it certainly has a place for deer managers and hunters but it may not be what you're thinking. This isn't culling like our grandfathers once did. This week I'm launching a new series on various Quality Deer Management topics. The goal is to shed light on the principles & practices. QDM can be implemented on small and large tracts. Thanks for listening!
Hustling the African Dream is a podcast about innovative young Africans and their hustles. In this episode Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program Alumni, Emmanuel Ampomah, takes us to Ghana where we hear from young people who have struggled to find a job immediately after graduating. This series has shown that having a degree isn't always a ticket to employment, and in this episode we hear firsthand that expectations about jobs… and reality… are two different things. Nate Rozeveld , an experienced hunter from Michigan, shared his hunting journey and insights into the unique challenges and differences he has encountered while hunting in his home state compared to other states. Background and Hunting Origins: Nate grew up in a hunting family and was introduced to hunting at a young age. With hunting enthusiasts on both sides of his family, it was only natural for Nate to follow in their footsteps. He began hunting small game at the age of 12 and progressed to bow hunting and rifle hunting for deer. Hunting was ingrained in his family's traditions, and there was never a question of whether Nate would become a hunter. The Influence of Quality Deer Management: Nate's family embraced the principles of Quality Deer Management (QDM) early on, implementing a self-imposed four-point rule for their tags. This approach aimed to target mature bucks and improve the overall deer population. Growing up with this mindset, Nate witnessed both successful hunts and missed opportunities, as he learned to differentiate between younger and older bucks. The Differences in Hunting Michigan vs. Other States: Nate's hunting experiences in other states, such as Illinois and Iowa, revealed significant differences compared to Michigan. One notable distinction was the higher number of mature bucks in these states, resulting in more aggressive behavior during the rut. In contrast, Michigan's deer population, while abundant, often exhibited less aggression and territorial behavior due to a higher ratio of does to bucks. The Impact of Hunting Pressure: Hunting pressure plays a crucial role in shaping deer behavior. Nate observed that Michigan's deer, subjected to higher hunting pressure, displayed more cautious and skittish behavior compared to deer in less pressured areas. This heightened wariness made it challenging to employ certain hunting tactics, such as rattling antlers or aggressive calling, which often proved successful in other states. The Importance of Property Management: Nate emphasized the significance of property management in Michigan. By collaborating with neighboring hunters and implementing QDM practices, he and his fellow hunters have seen improvements in the age structure of bucks on their properties. This has led to more aggressive behavior among mature bucks and increased opportunities for successful hunts. The Thrills and Heartbreak of Early Season Hunting: Nate shared his preference for hunting the first two weeks of October, a period often overlooked by many hunters. By strategically targeting specific properties and utilizing trail cameras to identify early-season patterns, he has been able to capitalize on the behavior of mature bucks during this time. Dickson Delorme may not be a name you connect with immediately, but I bet Quick Dick McDick rings a bell! Dick is a content creator out of Tufnell Saskatchewan that aims to bring humour to everyday situations…because he's just a regular guy who lives an everyday life! Dick talks about the reasons he came back to SK after 19 years in an Oil and Gas life and the genesis of his alter ego. He talks about how he really is the same guy, just with some “spicy bbq sauce” involved and how his father's honesty with him many years ago made this transition easier for him. It's a great look at a unique situation and we couldn't be prouder to share this with you! Check it out! Ep 298 - Food and Fossil Fuels Guest: Quick Dick McDick Saskatchewan farmer Quick Dick McDick has decided to throw himself into a number of hot-button issues. Food production and its reliance on fossil fuels is a common theme. From his perspective: “You can’t have one without the other.” It’s a point he believed was being drowned out by people in urban settings, who as he put it, “have no idea what it takes to produce food in Canada.” Rather than moan and whine, Quick Dick decided to employ cutting humor and a raw on-camera presence to make his point. Namely, he feels that decisions about how to produce food and the increasing cost of energy are out of touch with the reality of farming. His concern is: “I worry that we’re needlessly driving up the cost of food production while the commodity price on crops has not gone up, making it even more difficult than it already is to be a farmer.” His style is a no-holds-barred poke-ya-in-the-eye one that has gained him a huge online audience. Alberta Premier Jason Kenney shared QDM’s “Protestor Diet” video and, in doing so, ignited interest in Quick Dick’s YouTube channel. Now he is an internet sensation and before C-19, he was in hot demand as a speaker. We caught up with QDM on his farm in Saskatchewan as he was seeding one of his fields. We invited him to join us for a Conversation That Matters about him, his message and why he is not going to stop sharing his down-to-earth messages.

This week we are joined by our good friend Brian Phillips. He tells us his story about his buck hunt during gun season. His season leading up to this point. QDM management, and James apologize's for a recent rant he went on in past episodes.
Ted Wawrzyniak, the President of the Minnesota State Chapter joins us and we talk about QDM and the QDMA. Heads up....it's not just about growing giant bucks. On the contrary, it's more about all wildlife than just adding another taxidermy bill to the hunting budget.
(A previous series available on SoundCloud) Welcome to Health Pilots, where we interview people pursuing new solutions for health care in low-income communities. You'll hear about new technologies and workflows, human-centered design, and how to collaboratively innovate. Many clinics face the challenge of delivering a pleasant and comfortable patient experience. Measuring that experience effectively can be one of the most vexing parts of that work. In 2014 CCI, with support from the Blue Shield of California Foundation, launched the Engaging Patients to Improve Care program to help safety net organizations take on patient experience work, as well as actively engage patients in their efforts. One part of that program involved rolling out to three clinics a unique patient experience survey, the Pulse One Minute Survey (POMS), a tool designed and managed by Quality Data Management (QDM), a health analytics company based out of Cleveland, OH. The POMS uses just two questions to solicit meaningful written feedback on a patient s visit. The completed POMS cards are analyzed by QDM who uses sophisticated techniques to turn the qualitative verbatim responses into meaningful insights that can inform change. To get some deeper insights into how effective this survey was, and the lessons learned implementing it, CCI s program manager Susannah Brouwer spoke with the project leads from the three POMS grantee clinics: Laila Gulzar of Ravenswood Family Health Center, Felipe Dest of Lifelong Medical Care, and Debra Rosen of Northeast Valley Health Corporation.
