In this episode, Stephanie Boyles-Griffin, Jessica Tegt, Steve Demarais, and Bronson Strickland discuss the complexities of urban deer management, exploring the challenges posed by growing deer populations in urban areas. While recreational hunting remains the most effective and practical tool for population control in most settings, an increasing number of circumstances—especially in urban and suburban areas—render it unfeasible. Stephanie and Jessica, both from the Botstiber Institute, outline non-lethal and alternative methods commonly used to manage deer in these environments and walk through the series of decisions required to evaluate which techniques are appropriate and how likely they are to succeed. Send us a textThis week on the Montana Outdoor Podcast your host Downrigger Dale has a very interesting discussion with Brian Wakeling, Game Management Bureau Chief for Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks. Rigger received emails from a whole lot of you wanting more information about the new Mule Deer Management Plan that Brian and his staff are working on right now. Mule Deer are a VERY popular species to hunt here in Montana and a great deal of hunters and outdoor folks in general have been concerned about the decline in Mule Deer populations in many hunting districts across the state. Thus, one of the main reasons for the FWP developing a new management plan. So, what is a management plan anyway? Who decides what goes into the plan? What are the main issues facing Montana's Mule Deer? Is it just Chronic Wasting Disease or are there other issues that are causing population declines? Recently Brian and his staff conducted a series of public workshops across Montana to get input from folks across the state. Mainly they wanted to hear ideas and what folks would like to see in the New Management plan. So how did the workshops go? Those and many other questions will be answered when you listen to this fascinating podcast. So, what are you waiting for click that play button and give this week's podcast a listen! Send us a textDeer management extends far beyond the lush green food plots that dominate hunting magazines and outdoor television. With expert guest Tom Byers, we explore the comprehensive approach to whitetail habitat improvement that will transform how you manage your hunting property.Tom shares his extensive background in deer nutrition and property management, developed through years of professional experience with deer farming and collaboration with leading whitetail biologists. He reveals why your prime food plot location might not be where you think - those convenient logging landings and clearings often lack the vital topsoil needed for productive plantings. We discuss the critical importance of soil testing, proper pH management, and why "lime first, then fertilize" should be every food plotter's mantra.Perhaps most surprising to many hunters is Tom's revelation about forest management. A properly timed winter timber harvest that allows for spring stump sprouts can provide equivalent nutrition to a cultivated food plot - with significantly less cost and labor. We explore the strategic placement of nutritional plots versus kill plots, optimal plot designs that force deer movement, and how three-dimensional electric fencing can protect smaller plots until hunting season. With summer planting season approaching, this episode delivers actionable insights whether you're managing hundreds of acres or just a small parcel. From soil selection to plot protection, we cover the fundamentals that will maximize your property's deer-holding potential while avoiding common and costly mistakes. The chainsaw might just be your deer herd's best friend after all!Check us out on Facebook and instagram Hunts On Outfitting, and also our YouTube page Hunts On Outfitting Podcast. Is Ireland ready to tackle its growing deer management challenges? How will the new national deer management programme impact hunters, landowners, and conservation efforts? What role do thermal imaging technologies play in modern wildlife management? In this milestone 200th episode of Conservation and Science, we welcome back Ashley Glover, a conservationist, master huntsman, and long-time friend of the podcast. Recording from Wicklow Wolf Brewery, we celebrate this special occasion by diving into the significant changes coming to Irish deer management. From there, we discuss many more Irish conservation and nature restoration-related topics.Ashley shares valuable insights on the recently introduced national deer management strategy, including the establishment of 15 deer management units across Ireland. We explore the complexities surrounding implementation, from landowner engagement to data collection methods and hunter integration. The conversation highlights ongoing policy conflicts, such as how to manage deer on state lands, and addresses critical issues like deer-vehicle collisions and the humane dispatch programme. Ashley explains how thermal imaging has revolutionised deer counting and tracking, making wildlife management more effective and evidence-based.Beyond deer, we discuss other pressing conservation matters in Ireland, including invasive American mink control and the challenges of predator management for protecting ground-nesting birds. Ashley offers valuable perspectives on balancing conservation needs with hunting traditions and the importance of mentoring new hunters. In our conversation, we examine Ireland's conservation landscape, highlighting both the progress made and the significant work still needed to address policy conflicts in biodiversity management, peatland restoration, and sustainable land use.Subscribe to Tommy's Outdoors: Conservation and Science NewsletterSupport the Podcast and Buy Me a Coffee.Recommended Books: tommysoutdoors.com/booksMerch: tommysoutdoors.com/shopFollow Tommy's Outdoors on Bluesky, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and FacebookMentioned in this episode:DisclaimerThe views and opinions expressed in this podcast are those of the individual participants and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of any organisation. On Thursday, the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources passed a new deer management plan, which will inform hunting regulations until 2030. One major change approved in the plan involves how the state will manage areas with high numbers of chronic wasting disease, such as the La Sal Mountains and Castle Valley. Targeted hunts will occur in these areas to cull sick deer. - Photo: The new plan also suggests lowering the buck-to-doe ratios is certain areas throughout the state as another method for slowing the spread of chronic wasting disease as male deer are more like to contract it. The most valuable time of the year for any whitetail hunter is arguably "The Rut". Bucks are moving around the clock and pushing does outside of their normal routine, and it makes for some entertaining and enjoyable sits in the woods. This week we are joined on the Podcast by one of our own, Ryan Reading, a Pro Staffer from New York. With over 30 years of hunting experience, and roughly a decade of time spent managing his own properties in the Northeast, Ryan has spent a lot of time studying deer behavior, observing patterns and pulling data from his Tactacam Reveal Cell Cams, and not to mention hunting big whitetails. Specifically, a recent 3 year quest to tag his number 1 target that came to fruition in 2024 in an epic, heated rut hunt! In this episode of the Built To Hunt Podcast, we dive deep into Utah's deer management strategy with special guest Dax Mangus, a key member and local biologist of Utah's deer management committee. As Utah battles with declining deer populations, factors like habitat improvement, hunting regulations, and public opinion shape the current management plan. Dax sheds light on the 100,000-acre+ habitat restoration initiative, the impact of energy development on deer populations, and the vital role GPS collar studies play in tracking deer health and behavior. We also discuss the importance of balancing a healthy buck-to-doe ratio, changes to weapon allocation, and the unique four-point restriction system in Pine Valley. How does Utah's approach compare to other states, and are these measures enough to ensure a sustainable deer population? Dax shares insights on how public surveys influence season structures and the challenges in shifting season dates. In this episode, Dr. Mark Turner discusses his research on the nutrient requirements of deer and the availability of native plants to fulfill those requirements. He sampled common deer forages throughout the Eastern US and found that only 44% of the forages sampled met the minimum crude protein requirement, and only 19% met the minimum phosphorus requirement. This highlights the importance of providing a diverse range of forage options for deer. Mark also emphasizes the need to consider both the amount and quality of forage when estimating nutritional carrying capacity. He suggests that landowners consider incorporating native plants into their management strategies and diversify their food plots to provide a more balanced diet for deer. Deer management has been a topic of conversation in the hunting community for a long time. For some it may be more feasible than others. You may have ground that is connected over a certain amount of acres that may produce great bucks. You have tried to manage the ground by adding food plots, feeding your deer, and passing bucks to let them get to maturity. The real question though is, is deer management worth it? On this episode of the Raised Hunting Podcast we look to answer that question. We break down some of the pros and cons of deer management, look to find a difference between deer management and land management, and also look at how managing deer can affect hunting for an individual as a whole and if it takes away from the hunt itself.
Beau Martonik is joined by Nick Pinizzotto, CEO of the National Deer Association. They spent the morning at Nick's camp in central Pennsylvania discussing deer management, deer populations, hunting mature bucks, the Saturday Deer Opener, how polling works, opportunity vs. quality, hunter retainment, the public lands initiative, and much more!
