Their influence extends up and down the West Coast and throughout the Rocky Mountains, leaving a lasting legacy that continues to inspire today. In this episode, Stephen J. Binz, a pilgrimage leader to the California Missions, and JoAnn Seaman, director of the Mother Cabrini Shrine in Golden, CO, share the stories of these two remarkable saints and the places where their impact is still felt. As I have described in previous episodes, a large credit for the idea for this podcast, Peace Love Moto, is due to the Distinguished Gentleman's Ride, an international fundraiser for men's health issues focused on prostate cancer research and suicide prevention. I described how this event is attended by men and women, all dressed up in dapper outfits, all with the common heart for raising money and awareness for these important issues that impact thousands of men throughout the world. I also mentioned that this past year, I was honored to be the host of the Distinguished Gentleman's Ride event in Fort Collins, Colorado. I met people with hearts the size of our Colorado Mountains. One such person, is our guest today. Not only was Doug Logston the first place fund raiser for our Fort Collins event, I also learned that Doug is one fascinating guy, including being the State Director for the Motorcycle Sport Touring Association! It's such a joy to present to you my interview with my new friend, Doug Logston.
Meet Jacob Mueller, Co-Founder and CEO of Renjoy — a next generation short-term rental management firm based in Colorado Springs. Growing up, Jacob never would've guessed he'd be an entrepreneur, he studied economics in college and thought he'd go into policy. But during his senior year, Jacob had the opportunity to work on a school project as a part of his thesis that revolved around launching a business in rural Michigan — and while he couldn't have known it at the time, this project would inspire him to leave his dreams of working in Washington DC to own and operate businesses. After graduating, Jacob wound up getting really into coffee and bought a local chain of coffee shops in the Colorado Mountains. But after a couple of years of working in the restaurant businesses, Jacob desired a pivot — and so he began binging episodes of Bigger Pockets and learned as much as he could about real estate. Tune in to hear the exciting story of how Jacob wound up going all in on real estate as he believes it's one of the best ways to help people achieve financial freedom, and how this mission of his led him and two of his friends to start Renjoy and scale it to over 150 properties under management in just a couple of years. It received near-universal praise for its subdued but beautiful direction, writing, and performances from Dale Dickey and Wes Studi. Director and writer Max Walker-Silverman was kind enough to discuss his feature directorial debut with us, where he went into detail on the challenges of making his first film, working with two screen-acting experts, how the Colorado Mountains setting played an essential role in the story and more. Thanksgiving of 2012 started off very poorly for the Redwine Family. When one member of their clan, 13-year-old Dylan Redwine vanished on November 18th, an expensive and lengthy search of the Colorado Mountains ensued. What they found over the course of a decade exhausted investigatory resources and frustrated the community. By the time an arrest was made, everyone already knew who had taken Dylan. We begin season two of The Storytellers' Porch with our host Jill Davis and her long-time friend and co-host, Emily Chase Smith. Jill Davis has been helping people identify their dreams, tell their stories and share their ideas with the world for the past 30 years. She is a coach, speaker, author, as well as a mother of four and grandmother of two, living a life of joy in the beautiful Colorado Mountains. Jill's time as the lead speaker coach for TEDx Colorado Springs inspired her to create The Storytellers' Porch, a podcast showcasing personal stories with collective impact. Our co-host Emily Chase Smith is an attorney, So Cal native and lover of VW buses. She'll be joining us for the entire season as we explore Jill's journey to owning an incredible, 300+ acre farm in rural Kansas. Today's story takes us to the beginning of Jill's journey with her family's farm in Kansas. Growing up, Jill never spent time at the farm but her father, who left the property to Jill when he passed away in 2018, visited at least once per year to help his employees with harvest season. All throughout her life, Jill heard stories about the farm through her dad but was far removed as she grew up in the city lifestyle of Colorado Springs. Following her inheritance, Jill took solace in the knowledge that her father had set up his will to allow Jill 5 years to decide what to do with the property and how to manage it. Farm hands lived on property at the time and were there to handle it all for her until the time came to make a decision. Through a series of unexpected events, Jill was forced to move much faster than she had planned. In this episode, we discover how our host navigated the process of inheritance, the people she met along the way, her findings about the remote Kansas county (population 2,200) in which the farm is located and the history behind how her family came to own such a sizable property. Find out more about the farm and see some of Jill's pictures of the transformation of her property on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/JillDavisCoaching or on Instagram @thestorytellersporch, https://www.instagram.com/thestorytellersporch/ Thank you joining us on The Storyteller's Porch this week! Make sure you follow us at https://thestorytellersporch.com/, https://thestorytellersporch.libsyn.com/, or on your favorite podcasting platform so you don't miss a single story with us on the Porch. Welcome back to another episode of Discover More. "So I'm very symbolic in nature and I'm aware that I'm creating these ideas and these stories to navigate life in a way. But the more I tune in and listen, the more things become obvious. For me, I don't make choices anymore. Choices are illusions. Like we think we were choosing between two things, but once the thing that we're supposed to do becomes clear, the other thing wasn't even really an option. But if you're turning into what you really want and what you really need, well then there is no choice. The other thing is just like the illusion hiding." - Yoshua Greenfield This week's guest, Yoshua Greenfield, is one of the most fascinating people we've ever met. A talented musician, author, home cook, nature-lover, and bare-foot advocate, Yoshua comes with a wide range of important stories and lessons. He is well-known in the YouTube community for his prior role in the food show, “Brothers Green”, as well as his current project, “You Enjoy Life”, which examines what it truly means to be and feel alive through food, music, natural movement, and connection. We appreciate the way he explains complex topics through elegant story-telling and subtly encourages others to dive deeper into their spirituality and belief systems. In this week's episode, Yoshua recounts his journey of transitioning from a Brooklyn-based professional musician to a Colorado-living barefoot advocate. He reflects on his experience running his first barefoot marathon in the Colorado Mountains, as well as the many physical, mental, and spiritual benefits of living barefoot. Yoshua also shares some powerful practices for overcoming self-doubt, developing self-awareness, and deepening in relationship with Mother Nature. We're so excited to share Yoshua's beautiful stories and wisdom. They are truly inspiring, and we hope that you find it as moving as we did. Today's guest is Rachel Osborne. Rachel is currently a grad student who also attended Purdue for her undergrad, studying Industrial Engineering. Throughout her time at Purdue, Rachel has had multiple internships both in and out of state. These opportunities have led to amazing learning experiences, not only through the internships themselves but also through learning how live in a new state. I don't know about you, but out of state opportunities have always sounded exciting, that is until you have to start planning the details. Like how do you find housing? Or, how do you find friends during the short time you have your internship? Through my conversation with Rachel, these questions and much more will be covered. She will share her personal experiences with spending internships in the Colorado Mountains and in the busy city of Atlanta. She will also share advice for any students planning or considering crossing state lines for job opportunities. So, without further ado, here is my conversation with Rachel.
Listen in as we chop it up with Nashville country songwriter/artist Kenton Bryant on everything from signing publishing deals to chasing and hunting big elk in the mountains and more. Signed to 50 Egg Music, Bryant has written songs for some artists that you may know (Randy Rogers Band, Craig Campbell, etc.) and has some big songs of his own, too. Growing up in Kentucky, Kenton spent his days in the woods & water, hunting deer & turkey, and catching small mouth bass on the river. What we're saying is, Kenton Bryant is most definitely a Gullie. He lives in Nashville now, but Kenton still spends his Days Off doing what he loves most: hunting—whether it be back home in Kentucky searching for whitetail deer or up in the Colorado Mountains stalking big elk in the snow. We should note here that Kenton Bryant has never caught a spotted bass over 3lbs…so that means we have to get him out to AL and show him what a good Spot bite looks like, right?
Dave and Steven Sashen discuss why and how Steven Founded Xero Shoes. They also talks about running sprints in the Colorado Mountains, Barefoot.

Nancy Peterson and her husband, Rex, bought Plum Thicket Farms in the Nebraska Sandhills in 1998 after moving from the Colorado Mountains where Nancy had a cow/calf veterinary practice. Over the years they have built the herd to 300 cows, and have taken many steps to develop water efficiencies and make its pastures drought-resilient. Their son, Patrick, heads the farming operation and is passionate about improving soil health and conserving resources using cover crops and no-till farming practices.During our conversation, Nancy and I talk about drought planning, minimizing erosion and increasing water retention through cover crops and no-till farming, and the challenges switching from a wheat-fallow system to a no-till system. This week we're taking about the insane life of Alferd Packer, an inexperienced guide who led his party into the Colorado Mountains.
Scott Reed and a friend trekked more than five miles into the mountains west of Denver to attempt a long, moderate ice climb during the short days of late December. At an elevation around 12,000 feet, they climbed several pitches and then, in high wind, decided to bail back down the route. Toward the bottom, Scott, age 23 at the time, pondered whether or not to rappel from just one small piece of protection and save a little money. As it turned out, his decision would be much more costly than he imagined. In Episode 56 of the Sharp End, Scott speaks with Ashley about his long fall, the incredible self-rescue back to their car, and the lessons he learned (including the value of satellite communication devices on remote climbs). The Sharp End is presented by Mammut, with additional support from Desert Mountain Medicine, Suunto, and Minus33. This podcast is produced by the American Alpine Club.
Today, I would like to share a part of the story of my first chapter with you so that you can enter into our wonder-filled story of an unforgettable evening as we cuddled together in the Colorado Mountains. (And you can listen to me tell it on the podcast today.)
“A business that makes nothing but money is a poor business.” -Henry Ford On the front page of FOURPOINTS Bar’s website is the is the statement (stance) from the Colorado Outdoor Business Alliance (complete statement below). Please take the time to read it in full as it highlights who FOURPOINTS Bar are as people, as a company, and the conversation we have on this week’s T&T episode. You know how passionate I am about disrupting the dollar- where it’s being spent, why, and how, particularly in major corporate settings. We cover big food (major food orgs, KRAFT etc) and their power in the consumer’s market AND in the legislation of our country. The FOURPOINTS team is not only working hard to bring a superior bar with several competitive edges to the already overcrowded CPG “bar” market (prune based fyi and it’s awesome), they are also taking things to Washington DC to play with the big dogs and work for positive social (and consumption) change from all sides. They work with several charitable organizations giving back a percentage of annual sales each year (as a start up!) and align with other fitting industry strategic partners that share in the same core values and passion for Graceful Disruption™:). I’ll leave it there- this is a good one with so many great examples on why it’s so important for businesses to take a stance on social values. That has not been status quo until now. Consumers: fire up your engines and start purchasing accordingly. AND the have an Indie GOGO currently launched- support the cause today: https://igg.me/at/fourpoints-bar/x/23180680#/ FOURPOINTS Bar was created out of our passion for the outdoors, recreation, and clean eating, and was inspired by our family’s fight with diabetes. In 2007, after experiencing an untimely energy crash descending a 14,000 ft. peak in the Colorado Mountains during a lightning storm, we realized it was time for something different.Utilizing our sports nutrition, culinary, and wilderness athlete backgrounds, we began to experiment with different foods & recipes in an effort to craft an on-the-go and nutritionally complete bar that would better support our active lifestyles and a healthier blood sugar. The result - a slow-burn energy bar uniquely powered by prunes, with a low-glycemic load for sustained energy, without the sugar spikes and crashes. A bar isn't just a bar to us. We aren't limited by a desire to just getting outside. We also share a deep love of those wild & beautiful places and a calling to protect & preserve where we play. We are a 1% For the Planet business member and partner with other conservation non-profits to protect public lands. The FOURPOINTS: Real Food, Macronutrient Rich, Slow-Burn Energy, Ridiculously good Follow our adventures @fourpointsbar and use #whereveryouplay -Kevin & Patrick Webber Colorado Outdoor Business Alliance: The events of the past few weeks have brought our country’s systemic racism -- particularly against Black Americans -- back into the headlines. Tragically, these recent stories of violence barely scratch the surface of the injustices and discrimination that black people and people of color face every day in this country. Environmental justice is an integral part of Conservation Colorado’s mission, and racial justice is an inseparable aspect of that work. Outdoor recreation holds a problematic history in that for many, especially people of color, the outdoors and wild places have remained inaccessible. As the Colorado Outdoor Business Alliance fights for a world with protected lands, clean air and water, we know those efforts won’t be fully realized unless every person has equitable access to the outdoors, to democratic processes, and we put an end to systematic oppression against black people and people of color. Now almost 300 businesses strong, the Colorado Outdoor Business Alliance has impacted dozens of pro-conservation policy efforts over the years. We realize that with our collective influence comes great responsibility. It is our job to ensure that all voices are represented among our membership and within our leadership, that the Colorado Outdoor Business Alliance is an accessible program to all businesses, especially those who represent communities of color, and that we are only supporting policies that benefit all Coloradans, not just some. We recognize and stand in solidarity with the leadership of the frontline organizations and individuals working to end racism and violence against people of color. We want a world in which access to the outdoors is a great equalizer; a place where all people can come together, be at home, and feel safe. As the Colorado Outdoor Business Alliance Steering Committee, we commit to advocating for the protections of lands, water, climate for ALL Coloradans. Is it time for an alcohol experiment? Click here for glowed-up show notes: https://badbitcheslosingweight.podbean.com/ Annie Grace is no stranger to success whether it is in business or personal matters. At 26, Annie was the youngest Vice President in a multinational company and her drinking career began in earnest. At 35, in a global C-level marketing role she was responsible for 28 countries and drinking almost two bottles of wine a night. Annie didn’t want to live life in a daily battle for sobriety. To live a life avoiding temptation. She didn’t want her entire existence to revolve around alcohol. She wanted to take the power away from alcohol rather than make it a reward she was depriving herself of. She wanted freedom from alcohol. She wanted change. To find another way. And she did. Annie Grace authored; “This Naked Mind: Control Alcohol, Find Freedom, Discover Happiness And Change Your Life.” Her book reprograms your unconscious allowing you to break free from alcohol. Countless hours of research went into the writing of the book – it breaks down how alcohol changes us both physically and mentally. Annie no longer drinks and has never been happier. She left her executive role to write the book and share her method with the world. Since publishing her book she has been featured in publications such as Forbes, New York Daily News, Chicago Tribune and Mind Body Green. Annie Grace wants to share her message and the ability to find freedom from alcohol with as many readers as possible. Beyond the book, her goal is to reshape society’s views and our alcoholcentric culture so that the non-drinker is no longer an exception to the rule. Americans work hard, which is great. But the data shows that many of us think that means we should leave vacation time unused which is a loss for you and your family. It is also means lost productivity and less job satisfaction, which is bad news for employers. Today on Destination on the left, Katie Denis and Nicole talk about what gets left on the table and what to do about it. People are losing out on travel and enriching their lives – and the travel industry is losing real dollars. Katie is responsible for the strategic direction and day-to-day management of Project: Time Off. She is also responsible for taking all of her vacation time and encouraging her team to do the same. It is her favorite duty. She spends her time off with her toes in the sand of Grayton Beach, Florida, hiking the Colorado Mountains, or returning home to Cincinnati, Ohio. Katie lives in Alexandria, Virginia with her husband and their two daughters. A full transcript of this episode is available here: http://destinationontheleft.com/katie-denis/

[cherry_row] [cherry_col size_md="12"] Take a run with Ultra Stories as we discuss the true story of how the Leadville Trail 100-Mile Endurance Run was founded. In Part 2 of our interview with Dale "Sasquatch" Perry, we discuss Jim Butera.. the founder and original Race Director of the LT100. Jim was a well known Colorado race director in the early 1980s. He created the now defunct Colorado Ultra Club and the Moosejaw Ultra; and was the man who's dream and vision for a 100-mile race in Colorado's mountains got Leadville off the ground. Post interview, "Sherpa" John Lacroix and Hollis Lyman of HPRS bring it all together with hopes that the honest history of our sport can be preserved for generations to come. Show Links:Excerpt from October 1983 Ultrarunning Magazine - Leadville 100's first race report written by Race Director Jim Butera. Excerpt from October 1984 Ultrarunning Magazine - Mentions Jim Butera as founder and race director working in cooperation with Chlouber. Dave Combs April 1996 Cal 50 Race Report where he says, "The guy behind me came up and passed, and I just tagged along behind him toward the start/finish area. He was an interesting guy--Jim Butera, the founder of the Leadville 100." 5280 Magazine Article from June/July 2005 written by Chris McDougall talking about Ken Chlouber in detail while only briefly mentioning Jim Butera, yet discusses Jim and Ken's chance meeting in a Denver shoe store. Listed the year Ken moved to Leadville and started working in the mines as 1976. Sue Norwood's 2006 Leadville 100 Race Report which states "Jim Butera came up with an idea to put the town back on the map" and "Jim's idea of a trail ultra marathon that would start in Leadville, go out to the ghost town of Winfield, and return to Leadville started in 1983 with 45 runners and has mushroomed 24 years later into a popular, internationally-known race with over 500 participants. Jim was the first LT100 race director and still runs in the race; he is entered this year." --2010 Lifetime Fitness purchases Leadville Race Series-- --October 2012; Jim Butera Passes away and the story begins to change-- Leadville Herald Democrat from August 2013 reposting of an excerpt from the 1983 Herald Democrat which lists Ken Chlouber as a race sponsor, but Jim Butera as the "coordinator." Leadville Herald Democrat from August 8, 2013 where Jim Feistner (a 1984 Finisher of the event) wrote a letter to the editor to correct a report that the LT100 was started by Merilee Maupin; and he states, "The Leadville Trail 100 race came to be in 1983 and was the dream of founder and race director Jim Butera." --2013 Lifetime Fitness allows the Leadville Trail 100 to grow beyond it's means, starts almost 200 more runners then permits will allow, and chaos ensues-- Leadville Herald Democrat from October 2013 mentioning Jim Butera as coming "up with the idea of an ultra race in the Colorado Mountains, which became the Leadville Trail 100." --In the aftermath of 2013, Lifetime Fitness decides to go back to the races roots, celebrating Ken Chlouber as the sole founder, and use this marketing ploy as a way to save face and regain lost participants-- Trailrunner Magazine Article from February 24, 2014 written by Yitka Winn where she states Ken Chlouber "co-founded the LT100 with Colorado Ultra Club’s then-president Jim Butera." Yitka has since been blackballed in Leadville due to Ken's anger over her writing this. Trailrunner Magazine from a September 12, 2014 article written by Garett Graubins "True Grit: The Man Who Founded Leadville." Article lists 1974 as the year Chlouber moved to Leadville, contradicting the 2005 article written by McDougall that states 1976. Article also points out where Chlouber calls the Governor of Colorado "a dickhead" and his disparaging nickname for Dean Karnazes, "O-fer." No mention anywhere of Jim Butera and is the first time Jim has been completely erased from the history. May 24, 2016 Daily News from UltraRunnerPodcast which points towards the October 1984 Edition of Ultrarunning Magazine. In the comments from URPs daily news someone writes, "Interesting to read the copy of the Ultrarunning Magazine from 1984. I see in the Trail section of the Ultrarunning Calendar on page 58 it shows Jim Butera of the Colorado Ultra Club as the contact/director of the Leadville Trail 100." 2017 Hinsdale County Site Development Report mentioning LT100 being started by both Jim Butera and Ken Chlouber. 2017 Leadville Trail 100 Runner's Manual by Lifetime Fitness... In his open letter to runners, Ken Chlouber lists himself and Marilee as the founders of the event in 1982 (prior to the mine closing and instead of 1983) and makes no mention of Jim Butera. January 4, 2018 article for REI Co-op Journal completely void of any mention of Jim Butera, and states "That's when Chlouber had an idea, one potentially grand enough to put Leadville on the map: "What about a 100-mile race?" Further removing Jim as the founder and visionary for the 100 mile run. Also note that it says, "The first race in 1983 had 49 entrants, 10 of whom managed to cross the finish line. Among them was Chlouber himself, who traded his shovel and dynamite for sneakers and trail shoes." The race had 44 starters (not 49) and Ken Chlouber does not appear in the official results (see 1983 Ultrarunning Magazine excerpt above). The Center of the American West's Faculty Director and Chair of the Board, Patty Limerick, and the Moses Lasky Professor of Law Emeritus at the University of Colorado, Charles Wilkinson moderated the conversation. Bob Beauprez served as Chairman of the Colorado Republican Party from 1999-2002. In addition to his writing, political, and other activities, Bob says his greatest enjoyment comes from Eagle's Wing Ranch, the buffalo breeding ranch in the northern Colorado Mountains that he operates with Claudia, his wife of 49 years, and Jim and Julie Beauprez, their second eldest son and daughter-in-law. Colorado resident and native westerner Mark Udall represented the people of Colorado in the U.S. Senate from 2009 to 2015 and the 2nd Congressional District from 1999 to 2009. Prior to serving in Congress, Mark served as course director and later as executive director at Colorado Outward Bound School.
