We initially decided to visit Oak Ridge Angus to pursue an angle in regard to Bull Sales... it's a fascinating process and not something we'd covered before on this podcast. After some research and my interview with 3rd generation rancher Cheryl LaFranchi, there was a whole lot more to unpack. This episode will be split in two. In the first we'll learn the history of Oak Ridge Angus, how and why they have over a decade long partnership with the Bear Republic Brewery and about the Range to Table Program where they partner with the Redwood Empire Food Bank to provide beef to Northern Californian's who are food insecure. Lastly, we'll talk about their experience with 2019's Kincade Fire which decimated their ranch. In 2 weeks we'll hear about how their 4 Angus bulls did at the Red Bluff Bull and Gelding sale.
It's just understanding that, life is tenuous. Life is hard and, sometimes people need help and it's all okay - David GoodmanOver the past two years of producing this special series, we have brought you stories from nonprofits working on some of our long-term social issues such as homelessness, housing, hygiene, and mental health. In this one-hour-long special show, we wanted to turn our focus back to food insecurity for children families, and seniors. Since the Covid-19 pandemic breakout in March of 2020, food insecurity has increased dramatically. According to Feeding America, in the state of California, the overall food insecurity rate for 2021 was projected to be 12 percent which is four hundred and eighty-four thousand people who are food insecure on any given day. CalFresh is the California version of the old federal food stamp program and their numbers show that CalFresh recipients in San Francisco increased by 42% from November 2019 to November 2021. This episode is focused on the work of the Redwood Empire Food Bank which provides one of the most basic needs food, along with wraparound services to our San Francisco North Bay and Northern California community members. Our featured guests are: Chief Executive Officer, David Goodman, Director of Programs, Alison Goodwin along with food bank services, recipient and volunteer Sam Cagle, as well as Programs Coordinator, Juana Renovato. In this special edition of the podcast we update you on the current situation in our county regarding the recent fires. An outstanding effort was made by our County Sheriff Office, the Cal Fire Teams and first responders and firefighters from around the state and with support from out of state teams as well. The map below shows where the fire was in relationship to Wine Road members. Soda Rock and Fieldstone wineries were lost in the fire. Due to the widespread evacuations, we have made the difficult call to cancel Wine and Food Affair 2019. Ticket holders may opt for a refund, transfer their ticket to a future event or donate the fee to Redwood Empire Food Bank. Details below-- This is still a work in progress, but we should have this wrapped up to share via Eventbrite by Friday morning (Nov. 1). We are sorry to say Wine & Food Affair has been canceled for Nov. 2-3. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we have been without power and internet service. Our office will not be open until next week to respond to your emails, voice mails, and inquiries. At this point, we hope to address your concerns about refunds and moving forward. Via Eventbrite we are able to offer you the following options: 1. Transfer your ticket to Winter Wineland, January 18-19, 2020. The additional $35 you paid for Wine & Food Affair can then be transferred to the Redwood Empire Food Bank as a donation. 2. Keep our ticket as a credit for next year's Wine & Food Affair, scheduled for Nov. 7-8, 2020. We will provide anyone that selects this option a FREE Wine Road Tasting Pass, for each Wine & Food Affair Ticket they have, to be used anytime (some blackout dates) in the next 12 months. This is a $35 value. 3. Transfer ALL of my ticket money to the Redwood Empire Food Bank as a donation and then receive a promo code for you to save 20% on your next purchase of any of our 3 annual events (discount good on one event, for the same number of tickets you had purchased for Wine & Food Affair). 4. Please send a refund for my entire ticket order.
