He created and produced, ‘The Cork Dorks'. The show was hosted with Adam and his good friend Jeremy West. It was the first of its kind. It began focusing on central coast wineries but as the show grew, so did their ability to travel and meet other winemakers they found everywhere from Napa to Bordeaux that adopted that same Central Coast quality of people willing to share their wines, and their stories. As the area's producer's grew, soon Adam's interview's covered everything from spirits, craft beer, cider, cuisine, hospitality, and more. Fast forward to today, the spirit and enthusiasm cultivated with the award winning show, is reborn as The Pour with Adam Montiel, this time independently, and unfettered by corporate authority leaving it even more free to share the journey of making wine more approachable and fun for everyone. Here, We Taste It. We Spill It. We Leave it All On the Table. This is ‘The Pour' with Adam Montiel.__________Sincere Thanks to those who support The Pour. Steven Kent Steven Kent, owner of The Steven Kent Winery in Livermore Valley, joins Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger on California Wine Country. Dan Berger recently visited Livermore with his friend, winemaker Clark Smith, to investigate Cabernet Franc. Steven given Cabernet Franc a privileged position in his portfolio. For centuries, Cabernet Franc has been used as a blending grape, but Steven says it can do a whole lot more. He has brought four Cabernet Francs for tasting today, Steven Kent's son is the seventh generation of Kent family winemakers. In 1854 they started making wine in San José. The Livermore Valley was a wine producing region forty years before Sonoma County. Steven says that Cabernet Franc and the Livermore Valley both deserve more recognition. Dan attended a Cabernet Franc festival there recently and there were a lot of people there who are very enthusiastic about Cab Franc. Cab Franc: not just a blending grape. Cabernet Franc gets harvested about 2 weeks earlier than Cabernet Sauvignon. It has less tannin and more aromatics with some dried herb character. In some ways it is a finer variety. Dan calls Cab Franc the father and Cab Sauvignon, “the wild and wooly teenage son.” For people who are looking for a slightly different approach to red wine, Cab Franc is a good choice. It is graceful and doesn't have the same power as Cab Sauvignon. They have a 2022 Cab Franc from the Ghielmetti vineyard. Livermore is hot by day but gets cold at night. The nearby Altamont pass is a windy place, which extends the growing season. They would normally harvest this in early November. It gets no new oak. Dan Berger says, “This is red wine of a very serious nature but without any of the heavy tannins or the over-ripe components that sometimes creep into bigger, richer, oilier wines that are aged in barrels.” He also calls it “the Pinot Noir of Cabernet.” Dan would give it two to three more years, but it doesn't need much smoothing because it's already more than half way there. Located in Livermore They are located on Vasco Road in Livermore. Their tasting room is in a light industrial area, with seven other wineries nearby, known call the place “Vasco Row.” They buy 95% of their fruit from their local friends, and the remaining portion from the Santa Cruz area. They have a club lounge at the winery for their members. Dan calls it “uncontaminated by tourists.” The Kents are the oldest continuous winemaking family in the country. Lineage is another label that they produce. When he and his father Steven Kent Senior opened Steven Kent Winery, they wanted to produce high quality Bordeaux style wines. After working with a lot of Rhone varietals, he wanted to return to Bordeaux styles. In 2007 he started Lineage as a Bordeaux blend and so they could produce elegant age-worthy wines that would go well with food. The one they are tasting is the 2017. Dan says it is well-balanced. It's called Lineage because it represents the family history in winemaking.
The Steven Kent Winery was founded by the 5th and 6th generations of the Mirassou family - the oldest winemaking family in the US. Our winemaking focus is almost fully on Cabernet Franc - we will produce at least 13 different wines from Cab Franc from the 2023 vintage. We also make small volumes of single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Most of our sales are currently direct-to-consumer though we are expanding our distribution network at this time.

It has been a crazy week! We thought we had all of our fruit in on one day, but then added 20% more of the total harvest with 10 tons of Cabernet Franc from a new vineyard in the Valley a day later. As the video above notes, we are close to being dry on our newest Cabernet Franc Blanc just as we are presenting the few cases we squirreled away from last year for a series of TASTE! events that we stupidly committed to way before harvest began. you know it's non-winemakers who are the ones who schedule events smack dab in the middle of the busiest time of our year! So, morning, noon, and night punchdowns everyday, inoculating new 15 fermenters over the last three days, and pressing off Cab Franc and Merlot; and four pouringevents/seminars over the last four days makes for a dull boy. The Cabernet Sauvignon refresh was episode 535, so I thought that on the heels of that it was time to do a refresh Cab Sauv's parents. This week is the Cabernet Franc refresh and next week will be Sauvignon Blanc, so you can have the full picture of the parents and the offspring. Cabernet Franc is an underrated grape and things seem to be changing rapidly with it these days. In the past, it has often been used purely as a blending grape, except in the Loire Valley, but today it's taking center stage. Producers and wine drinkers have realized that if the best wines of Château Cheval Blanc on the Right Bank of Bordeaux, have a higher proportion of Cabernet Franc, maybe there is something to this grape that should be explored. Although Cab Franc still doesn't have widespread popular acclaim, it is extremely important in the wine world. Today –it grows everywhere from France, Italy, the United States, Chile, Argentina, Canada, Hungary, Washington State, Croatia, Israel, South Africa, Turkey, Slovenia, Uruguay, and more. Plantings are growing and I see a bigger future for this grape. In this show I cover: The origins and DNA of the grape Cab Franc in the vineyard Aromas and flavors Regions: France: Loire, Bordeaux, Southwest France Italy: Veneto, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Bolgheri Hungary: Villány Canada United States: Finger Lakes, Long Island, Virginia, and a little bit on Napa, Sonoma, and Washington South America: Argentina, Chile I cover food pairings and serving temperatures too. Sean Boyd had the fortunate experience, as a young man, to be able to make wine in both hemispheres for some of the finest wineries in the world — in Australia and Miguel Torres in Spain — before founding his own brand, Sightglass Cellars in the Columbia Valley of Washington. While he makes most of the Bordeaux varieties and a number of Rhônes, in his words, Cabernet Franc has become the most important grape for his brand. Wine Saves Lives! Caught up with Sean to talk about his history with wine, the state of wine in Washington State, and to define what Cab Franc means. We hope you enjoy this episode of the Wine Saves Lives! Pod. Wine Saves Lives! had the pleasure of talking with Lori about the birth of her brand, what cabernet franc means, how to build Brand: Cab Franc, and the future of our favorite grape in this episode of The Wine Saves Lives Pod! we hope you enjoy. She is one of the most thoughtful winemakers I know, and her brand is a testament to perseverance and vision. Leah spent about an hour talking about her childhood, what got her into wine, and how she became one of the preeminent producers of Cab Franc in the country. Wes Hagen is a wine educator, a wine historian, a vineyard manager, a writer of AVA proposals, and a damn good winemaker. He is a Renaissance man in the world of wine, connected inextricably to Santa Barbara County, where his family brand Clos Pepe made some of the finest Pinot Noirs of the 1990s and 2000s. He is also a fan of Cabernet Franc. Below, he gives Wine Saves Lives! he answers the question: What Does Cabernet Franc Mean? The Cab Franc people are how Pinot Noir people used to be. Cab Franc is the, is the grape to me that's attracting the seekers. It's attracting the people that are searching for something outside the norm. And so, to me, it's weird — because when I'm in that room full of Cab Franc people, I kind of feel the same way that I feel now in a post Sideways world at World of Pinot Noir. These are my people. I feel like, like I mentioned, The Dead Show and one of my descriptions earlier… and I used to, follow the Grateful Dead quite a bit. And, um, when you're in the show, it feels like these, these are your people. And I feel like, I feel like Cab Franc people are my people.I feel like, uh, I feel like the same way about them, that they're the ones that are looking, they're just in front of the trend, but the trend is never going to happen the way that we imagine it's going to happen. It's not going to be a Cab Sauv. It's always going to be a little bit sort of edgy, and I think that's where Cab Franc would prefer to be. This is a public episode. My friend, Allison Slute of Cab Franc Chronicles, recently joined Wine Saves Lives! to talk about how she became the go-to authority on Cab Franc, especially from the Loire Valley, how she uses social media to communicate her love for the “greatest grape,” and to answer the question What Does Cabernet Franc Mean? Delve deep into the realm of cider co-ferments Enjoy this special talk with a tasting of select co-ferments from New York Apple Camp 2023. Hear the discussion on techniques, flavors, and challenges. This talk was hosted by: Dan Pucci, author of "American Cider: A Modern Guide to a Historic Beverage" (2021) Matt Sanford, head cider and wine maker at Rose Hill Farm, New York Matt Sanford and Dan Pucci Co-ferments in this tasting All co-ferments where made in New York. Blackduck Cidery Aronius: A unique co-ferment consisting of 92% apples and 8% Aronia berries, which lend a tannic profile to the glass. Rose Hill Cider Pomme Cerise 2020 & 2021 blend | 20% sweet and sour cherries and 80% apples, this blend showcases the layering of flavors over time. Mentioned - Rose Hill Cider Pearly Dewdrops' traditional fermented drink made of plums. Cuvée with carbonically macerated Shiro, Early Golden, Oblinaya and Satsuma plums, cherries and nectarines that are blended with apple cider. Dark, resinous fruit flavor buoyed by an invigorating sparkle, this is the stonefruit equivalent to a dry, rustic Lambrusco. Wild years fermentation, no filtering or fining, finished in bottle without additives. Metalhouse Cider Tazza: A co-ferment of cabernet Franc skins that resembles wine in smell and taste but lacks the body of wine. It exudes a piquette-like vibe, combining Macoun and Macintosh apple juice with the robustness of Cab Franc. Rose Hill Cider Chiffonner 9% ABV: Comprising 25% Roxybury Russet, 25% Ashmead's Kernel, and 50% Riesling. This unique blend sits in stainless for six months and another year in neutral oak. If it's not solely made of apples, Rose Hill labels it as wine. When should a ferment be labeled cider vs. wine? Matt Sanford shares Rose Hill's approach. - The debate continues: Are co-ferments undermining cider? - Ultimately, co-ferments could serve as a gateway to the world of cider for many and with Matt making and other makers show casing what can be done, the future is bright for this category. On this episode of Obsessed with Wine, our host Wesley S Cable Sr is joined by special guest Luke Trainum, a passionate winemaker. Luke shares his journey in winemaking and discusses the process behind creating his wines.Luke's biggest passion project is Cab Franc, which he grows on two properties spanning a total of 16 acres. The vineyard sites and harvested fruit play a crucial role in determining the style of the wine. Luke employs various techniques, such as a cold soak on the fruit and gentle destemming with a delicate distemmer called Mccube, to ensure the grapes remain delicate throughout the winemaking process.Fermentation and maceration on the skins last about a month, with a gradual increase in temperature. Luke utilizes a combination of punch downs and pump overs during fermentation. The aging process takes place in predominantly neutral French oak punches, resulting in a unique flavor profile.Luke also discusses a popular wine that was initially released in 2019 as a wine club exclusive but is now available to everyone. He emphasizes the purpose of holding back wines to assess how they age, rather than increasing their price upon re-release. The 2019 vintage has now entered a new stage with more structure and softened tannins, and there is high demand for it.In addition to winemaking, Luke sheds light on the challenges of producing Pinot Noir in Virginia and the smaller scale of wineries compared to California. He explores the different wine regions in Virginia, including the Shenandoah Valley with its unique terroir and Central Virginia where Monticello is located. Luke mentions the next generation of winemakers focusing on hillside vineyard sites in the mountains. Not only is Luke dedicated to winemaking, but he also raises heritage breed pigs and distributes the meat to restaurants. He shares his background growing up on a farm and how his family's traditional values shaped his journey into winemaking. Luke's experiences working in restaurants and a winery in California further fueled his passion for the craft.Throughout the episode, Luke delves into the winemaking process, discussing topics such as filtering, bottling, different barrel types, and the importance of stability in white wines. He emphasizes the sensitivity and potential mistakes in the winemaking process while emphasizing the importance of learning from past industry mistakes.Luke's vineyard in a cold area presents unique challenges, leading him to focus on Austrian German varieties, cold-hardy French grapes, and classic Bordeaux varietals. He provides insights into the specific grape varieties grown and their suitability for his climate.Join us on this engaging episode of Obsessed with Wine as we delve into Luke Trainum's fascinating journey in winemaking and explore the intricacies of crafting exceptional wines.Follow us on Social Media: https://www.instagram.com/obsessedwithwine/ https://www.facebook.com/obsessedwithwine https://twitter.com/obsessedwine For more wine content go to obsessedwithwine.com Listen to past episodes of the podcast here: Listen on Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/podcast/id1610813329https://podcasts.apple.com/podcast/id1610813329 Listen on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/6GUNTZsivMlyTySnSbDwfT?si=3c1df2968aba4338 Email the show @ obsessedwithwine@yahoo.com #obsessedwithwine #winepodcast #winelovers #winetasting #winetrends #winestories #winerylife #winetime #winenews #wineeducation #wineculture #winemakers #wineindustry #wineinfluencers #podcastannouncement #season2 #newepisodes #uncorked #cheers

Episode 17 is with Lukas van Loggerneberg of Van Loggerenberg Wines based in Paarl, South Africa. Lukas is a gentle giant. He's a quiet, modest man who makes some of the country's best wines. That's by no means a stretch of the imagination, as he is a Tim Atkin first growth producer, a title reserved for the best 25 winemakers in all of South Africa. We're lucky enough to import his entire collection of wines, which includes a more premium range – wines like the Graft Syrah, Breton Cabernet Franc, and Kameraderie Chenin Blanc – and then your more every day wines in the ‘Break a Leg' Series – a Chardonnay, Cinsaut rosé, and Merlot. Lukas' wines reflect his character; they are quiet wines that don't brag or boast, and yet they are showstopping. His Breton Cabernet Franc should be the next wine you seek out if you haven't yet tried it. Anyway, wine wasn't really a part of Lukas' family history growing up in the Breedekloof Valley. He did grow up around vineyards, but those grapes were mostly being used for brandy production. He got his start at Elsenberg Agricultural School in Stellenbosch, and worked for other folks in South Africa and the US before going it alone. The decision to do so came during a trip to the Loire Valley with his college roommate, Reenen Borman of Boschkloof, and their wives. They were at Domaine de la Chevalerie, and the cork had just been pulled on a 1989 Cab Franc. Right then, smelling that beautiful Italian herb aroma from 15 feet away, Lukas knew he was going to resign from his job as soon as he got home. But, surely, in order to have the guts to do that, one needs to have some good experience under their belt. After graduating from Elsenberg, Lukas cut his teeth at a winery on the east coast of the US. As luck would have it, right before he was supposed to get on his flight, he broke two bones in his foot. Remember his "Break a Leg" wine series? There's a theme here - but we'll get to all that. If you are assuming, like I did, that Lukas went to work in the Finger Lakes, you'd be wrong. He went to the bustling village of Litchfield, Connecticut... Hosted by Charlotte Alsaadi. Special thanks to SNACKTIME for the music! Vine Street Imports Instagram | Website
