While it is not lost on me that you have found this podcast and other Nomad Strength internet happenings via extraordinary technology, there is something to be said for the connection and meaning found in traditional, handmade items. My guest today absolutely walks that walk, and in this episode with Correy Hawk, we talk about just that. Correy is a professional bowyer, former marine, homesteader, and survivalist. We get into a lot of things in this episode I didn't necessarily intend on when I asked Correy to come on, but I'm glad we did, because it was just honest conversation about where we are. We're diving into my favorite training tool again today! We've had several guests appear on the show who have expressed the sentiment we are covering with this episode. We love kettlebells, and know how beneficial they can be, so what is one thing that most people aren't doing with them? Training with heavy bells! I'm going to break down my approach to heavy bell training and some great starting points for anyone no matter their experience with them. The common perception is that bells are a great, light conditioning tool, and I'm here to tell you that is straight up fake news. Get strong with them, and have fun doing it. Cheers! There are a handful of people in the outdoors community that I really just connect to their way of living. My guest today is one of those people. Ryan Lampers is a husband, father, entrepreneur, and lover of all things outdoors. He is an extremely successful hunter, which is due to the 100+ days per year he spends in the field. We covered a ton of ground in this episode and it was great to get some insight into the lessons he's learned over the years, which will be helpful for anyone interested in the outdoors lifestyle. In the social media landscape, the hunting community is often facing an uphill battle. The idea of posting pictures of animals you've killed will always bring certain comments and messages, no matter how well its done. However, what happens when the negative feedback is coming from within the hunting community? My guest today deals with this conundrum frequently. Zach Owens is an avid outdoorsman, bow hunter, trapper, husband, and father. Zach takes heat online because of the animals he hunts, predators, specifically wolves. I was really excited to be able to sit down with Zach and talk about why predator management is such a key part of the hunting landscape if we wish to have thriving numbers of other game animals. He provides great insight into that topic, and why he truly loves these animals in a way that most don't understand. Enjoy! We live in a time where we can get whatever we want whenever we want, usually from someone we don't know overseas somewhere. It's becoming harder and harder to buy really great, American made products; while also knowing the family running the operation. Today my guest is Scott Volquartsen of Volquartsen Firearms. Scott and I connected at WinterStrong recently and I knew from all of the endorsements from people I knew, and after shooting his guns, that I had to learn more about his story. We had a great conversation about how to navigate running a firearms company in today's climate, the history of the company his dad started, and great insight into running a successful business. HIGHLIGHTS: WinterStrong recap The History of Volquartsen Firearms that began with his dad How difficult it is to use social media as a firearms company What makes American Made special Why they chose Rimfire to be their specialty in firearms The battles of growing a large company without sacrificing quality CONNECT WITH SCOTT: Instagram Volquartsen Firearms Website Facebook If you are ready to join a Tribe of men working everyday to better themselves physically and mentally, check out the Nomad Strength Tribe, here. I recently made a pilgrimage down to the woods of South Carolina to attend WinterStrong, an event put on by the team at Sorinex. I'd heard about how special this weekend was, but wasn't able to grasp the full concept until I was there. The conversations were epic, and I came away with so many things to implement. For this episode though, rather than talk about each individual "thing" we did, I wanted to go over the big things I came away from the weekend with. These are concepts that have already improved my interactions with people, and I know can have the same effect with anyone. Enjoy. Being successful when you're hunting in the mountains is the result of a lot of pieces coming together, but doing the hard work to give yourself the best chance at success had better be among them. Dan "The Fitness Man" Staton is a husband, father, obsessive elk hunter, and the founder and creator of Elk Shape and the Elk Shape Podcast. I've followed Dan for several years and have always loved his intense, blue collar attitude toward training and getting it done on the mountain, and in this conversation we get into a lot about how that developed. Some people live a life of adventure that is just inspiring to watch. I got the chance to chat with one of those people for this conversation. Danny Bolton is an entrepreneur, surfer, hunter, fisherman, instructor to SOF teams, and who knows what else. He has a great story that I was excited to hear after being told by many of our mutual friends to get him on the show. You are definitely going to dig Danny's stories and the perspective he shares on life, so settle in and enjoy my conversation with the Boarman, himself. We've got a fun one today, everyone. If you've listened to the show at all, you know that the kettlebell is near and dear to my heart. So I always appreciate when I see someone using them in a way that catches my eye. I started following Akira a little over a year ago, because he was doing things with really heavy bells that I've not seen many people do. I was really keen to understand how his mind works when it relates to training. We had a great conversation, and it will inspire you to think of your training differently and be courageous to try some new things. HIGHLIGHTS: How Akira began with kettlebells Training Intuitively Understanding and crushing the basics Living to 90 and still squatting and a ton more Enjoy this one! Today my guest is Andy Moeckel, also known as the Flip Flop Guy. If you haven't heard, seen, or more importantly, tasted the food that comes as a result of his cooking method, you're going to want to listen to this episode. I had the pleasure of having some elk that Andy prepared using his cooking technique, the Flip Flop and it was unbelievable. In this conversation we get into what exactly this wild method of cooking is, how it has been passed down through generations in his family along with the signature sauce that you can now purchase, and how to build a business out of something you're truly in love with. Andy has done things his own way, and his goal is to get the method (which is really an event) into every backyard in America. I had a blast catching up with him, and I know you'll enjoy what he has to say. Ross Johnson is an entrepreneur, investor, and co-founder of Smart Coach where he helps online coaches build their tribe and grow their business. I worked with Ross personally last year as I was transitioning to coaching full-time online, he has a ton of expertise and knowledge in the area of internet marketing. We got into some pretty out-there stuff in this conversation with crypto and technology (specifically Facebook's rebrand as Meta), and it will definitely have you thinking about the state of things in the world and what the next 10-15 years could look like. We also got into how Ross has corrected some of the health issues he had these last couple of years with some help of the Biohacking crowd. This was a really fun episode and will leave you thinking, which is good. We need more of that. Enjoy! Jesse Phillips is a husband, father, filmmaker, entrepreneur, and who I believe to be the embodiment of Johnny Cash's song, "I've Been Everywhere". But if I were to take all of that life experience and distill it down to one word, I'd call Jesse a storyteller. Jesse joined me to talk about; life transitioning out of the military, the recent debacle in Afghanistan (which he speaks and writes extremely eloquently about), and the importance of what he calls 'living to live'. This was a really great episode, and I know you will too. Enjoy!
