Episode 525: How do I save my company of 500 people and my new company is insane with AI

In this episode, Dave and Jamison answer these questions: Hey Dave and Jamison, First, I love your show and it has now been part of my Monday evening routine for many years to listen to your podcast while cooking dinner. I recently joined a mid-sized software company (500 people) as a senior data engineer. The salary is a significant bump from my previous job and I really like the team on a personal level. Three months after I joined, the company laid off half its employees and announced a strategic pivot away from their previous core business to become an “AI-first company” and develop new products in novel, more profitable sectors. The product that my team had been working on until that point was scrapped and there are no new projects coming from the business side. In subsequent communications, it was revealed why: Management has no concrete ideas for the future strategy, neither on what products to develop nor on which sectors to target. Instead, our team (among others) is now tasked with coming up with new product ideas to “save the company”. I'm a data engineer, not a business development manager, and while I have dealt with high ambiguity from the business side in previous roles, it was never this extreme. I was looking forward to working on interesting technical challenges within a great, experienced team, but now I feel like I'm expected to become an “idea guy”, a role that doesn't really match my personality. My question is: Should I be patient and try to turn this situation into “an opportunity for growth”, or should I start applying elsewhere? I'm a bit worried that the short length of stay at this company will leave a stain on my CV. Many thanks to my favorite space lawyers, an anonymous listener. Hi! My current job is at a 10k+ large risk-adverse company that currently has nil, none, nada, nichts ai tools available for coding. I of course did the only reasonable thing. I've gotten a new job at a middle-sized fintech company that's going ”AI first”. I'm really excited about finally using ai outside hobby projects. I worry however, that my future colleagues will go too quickly ahead while vibecoding, vibearchitecting, vibetesting… leaving a mountain of tech debt behind. A lazy colleague would actually be better than an intellectually lazy colleague in this scenario. (I sincerely hope that I won't be that coworker) Are my worries overblown or sane? Any gotch'as to avoid? Maybe you can give a brief survival guide to the brave new AI world?

Some efforts are so disproportionate to their impact that they border on the absurd—like bailing out the ocean with a teaspoon. In this episode of Created to Reign, David R. Legates takes aim at one such effort: a Silicon Valley–style geoengineering startup selling “cooling credits” by launching weather balloons filled with sulfur dioxide into the stratosphere. On paper, the idea borrows from real science—volcanic eruptions do cool the planet, after all. But when you scale the math, the economics, and the physics, the entire enterprise collapses into a case study in symbolic action masquerading as climate policy. Along the way, Dr. Legates explores the risks of solar geoengineering, the difference between meaningful solutions and virtue signaling, and the growing tension between private experimentation and public oversight. In the end, it's a classic Sisyphean tale—lots of effort, lots of money, and virtually no effect.Links: https://makesunsets.com/https://www.greenprophet.com/2025/04/make-sunsets-is-launching-geo-engineered-cooling-credits-with-vc-money/https://cepa.org/article/solar-geoengineering-a-transatlantic-split-under-the-sunhttps://legal-planet.org/2025/11/11/should-private-firms-be-involved-in-cooling-the-planet/https://www.epa.gov/newsreleases/epa-demands-answers-unregulated-geoengineering-start-launching-sulfur-dioxide-airVisit our podcast resource page: https://cornwallalliance.org/listen%20to%20our%20podcast%20created%20to%20reign/Our work is entirely supported by donations from people like you. PREVIEW: Zero-G Fabs: Manufacturing Semiconductors in Weightlessness Guest: Bob Zimmerman Bob Zimmerman discusses a new company, which he believes is called Besar, that manufactures semiconductors in low Earth orbit using a zero-gravity environment. The core idea revolves around the reality that challenges like gravity, earthquakes, and air quality exist on Earth, making the weightless environment of space an exceptionally good environment for manufacturing chips. The company believes they can produce much better semiconductors in weightlessness than on Earth. They have signed a contract with SpaceX to utilize the Falcon 9 first stage booster, placing their manufacturing facility, called a "fab ship," on it. During flight, the Falcon 9 first stage experiences approximately five minutes in a vacuum superior to anything achievable on Earth, which the company intends to use to produce semiconductors. They plan to start launching these fab ships by year's end, with approximately 12 planned missions, making this a profit center for SpaceX.

Marketing your business on a budget?  In this episode, Michael Herklots shares how he used the power of storytelling and personal branding to build his luxury cigar business from the ground up. Michael has worked in the Premium Cigar Industry since 1999. He served as Vice President of Nat Sherman International, responsible for creating and maintaining the company's portfolio of premium cigars, pipe tobaccos, and accessories. Most recently, he is the co-founder of Ferio Tego, which has been named the “Brand of the Year” by Cigar Dojo and “New Company of the Year” by Halfwheel.  Michael is a Certified Master Tobacconist by Tobacconist University and a thoughtful business leader with 20 years of experience in specialty retail and wholesale luxury goods.  The Power of Storytelling When Michael and his co-founder decided to launch a cigar company during COVID-19, there was no shortage of obstacles. Aside from the challenge of selling cigars during a respiratory pandemic, they also had limited capital. Without the budget to hire a marketing team or ad agency, they leaned on something more powerful: their story.  Over and over again, they told the story of Ferio Tego, their backgrounds in the cigar industry, and their vision for the brand. Both Michael and his co-founder Brendon Scott had plenty of connections in the cigar world, but they took a unique approach to every conversation. Every time they met with a potential partner, they would lean into different aspects of their story. For instance, smaller companies were more likely to relate to their story of bootstrapping the business from the ground up, while larger companies wanted to see the data and volume.  Innovate the Process, Not the Product In today's fast-paced world, many companies shift their marketing and add new products every week–but ultimately, that hurts your brand recognition and makes it harder for retailers to sell your products. The more consistent you stay, the greater the chance consumers will start to relate to and remember your brand.  While the Ferio Tego brand is consistent, Michael is constantly innovating other aspects of the business. He and his co-founder have taken a unique approach in partnering with other cigar companies. They now have factories in multiple countries without the overhead of managing their own warehouses. Enjoy this episode with founder Michael Herklots… Soundbytes 17:46-18:30 “New businesses, we don't have a marketing budget, we don't have an advertising agency. We don't have four people who are building decks on what is Ferio Tego and what isn't Ferio Tego and creating all of those thoughtful pyramids. Who has time for that? We're fighting for our lives every day, trying to get another sale. And so what we lack in that sophisticated, deep infrastructure of brand, we have what a lot of those departments crave and try to create which is the absolute authentic story of time served and process and how we do things.” 19:20-19:37 “What they are trying to do is to create brands that feel authentic, whereas we have, just as a consequence of being a small startup, we're creating a brand that is authentic. What you see is what you get.” 27:09-27:37  “As a Brand Builder and a storyteller, it's incumbent on me to tell the same story over and over and over again consistently, so that you as a retailer, can tell the same story over and over to your consumers. The consumers can learn that story and share it with their peers, and by the time they learn it, they can catch back up with the brand, and we're still singing the same song. We've abandoned that in so many industries.”  54:04-54:50 “There are times when you look at something that just seems so overwhelming, whether it's something as small as playing a gig, or something as big as launching a company. And to get over the hump of it, I have to believe that the opportunity and the idea and the consideration–all of the work has been done for a reason. All those opportunities are lined up for a reason and therefore I have to have faith that this is meant to be.”  Quotes “They're trying to create brands that feel authentic, whereas we, as a consequence of being a small startup, are creating a brand that is authentic.” “As a Brand Builder and a storyteller, it's incumbent on me to tell the same story over and over and over again consistently.” “It's become innovative to go back to building the brand.” “It's probably naive to think that it's possible to be everything to everyone. What I try to do is be something to everyone.” “I don't know anyone who would consider themselves an expert. Even the most famous, most successful are still practicing all the time.” “You have to live within what's authentic to you and let your audience find you.” Links mentioned in this episode: Learn more about Ferio Tego cigars: https://www.feriotego.com/ Connect with Michael on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/michaelherklots/

A Note from James:Today, we have a remarkable guest, John Mackey, the founder of Whole Foods. Whole Foods is my go-to place for groceries, whether I'm shopping in-store or ordering via Instacart. John's story is fascinating. He started as a young, hippie-ish guy living in a commune and working in a food co-op. One day, he thought, "Hey, I could do this," and opened his first store, Saferway, humorously named to poke fun at Safeway. Over time, this venture grew into the massive empire we now know as Whole Foods, which was eventually acquired by Amazon.John's journey is detailed in his new book, which captures the ups and downs of being an entrepreneur. Despite his seemingly hippie background, John evolved into an ardent capitalist, recognizing that innovation thrives on the competition capitalism inspires. In our conversation, we delve into how he evolved over the decades and the invaluable advice he shared with me.So, here's John Mackey with the whole story: adventures in love, life, and capitalism.Episode Description:In this episode, James Altucher welcomes John Mackey, co-founder of Whole Foods Market.
