Helen Keplinger is one of the most sought-after winemakers in Napa Valley, but she's taking a break to take us on a California road trip with her Vermillion wine. Vermillion, sourced from the high-elevation Sierra Foothills to the sea-sprayed vineyards of Santa Barbara, captures the diverse terroirs that make this state so special, and we pop a bottle with Helen to identify how each component plays a unique role. She fills us in on why one of her secret, prized grape sources is like Wagyu beef and why Paso Robles might just be the most exciting region in wine. Plus, we reveal the one “can't miss” event in Napa Valley that Helen's been attending for over a decade—and how you can get in on the action as well!

The “Returner” phenomenon is a very real thing: people leave their small towns as young people and come back later when they're ready to settle down, and there is a huge opportunity for both the returners and the small towns they're coming back to–but we're not always open to these boomerangs. This episode is about inviting people back, creating spaces, and growing as communities so they everyone is thriving. We think you'll love it! About Jessica: Originally from Winner, SD (pop. 2,852), Jessica Meyers was raised in Winner and Vermillion, SD, and earned her bachelor's degree at South Dakota State University in Brookings. Jessica and her husband Matt followed the flight pattern of many young adults and left the small towns of SD for bigger cities. After 10 years of living in some of the largest cities in America, she now lives in Sioux Falls with her family. Pairing over 20 years of sales and recruiting experience, Jessica discovered a unique opportunity for the Midwest. She is co-founder and CEO of PorchLight, a talent recruitment firm that partners with rural communities to prepare for the 21st-century workforce and connect rural workers to employment opportunities. Jessica created the first-of-its-kind PorchLight Certification and created the platform where rural development and job opportunities connect. Personally, Jessica has been married for over 20 years to her high school sweetheart Matt, and they have three daughters, Eve, Grace, and Juliet, who live in Sioux Falls, SD. In this episode, we cover: What is a returner? A different approach to thinking about housing (hint: it's not just workforce housing we need to consider) Why “People don't want to work anymore” is a myth Why remote work *works* for small communities What every single one of us can do to support our community's small businesses Links + Resources Mentioned: PorchLight's Website: https://porchlight-services.com/   Small-Town Shout-Out! This shout-out was blatantly stolen from the webinar with Saveyour.town, and in the chat, Jamie Shanks from Glendive shared an idea inspired by a Reimaginig Rural Event: They've recently formed a group focused on action vs meetings, and they call themselves the “VigiPlantes.” Their efforts are centered around planting new ideas, community beautification, planting actual trees and plants, and sometimes doing things in the wee hours so people in their community wake up to a surprise. Can you even?! Snaps to Jamie, Glendive, and the VigiPlanties for this very stealable, very amazing idea. New Segment Alert! We think some of the best parts about radio shows and podcasts are listener call-ins, so we've decided to make those a part of the Growing Small Towns Podcast. We really, really want to hear from you! We're introducing two new parts to the show:  “Small town humblebrags”: Call in and tell us about something amazing you did in your small town so we can celebrate with you. No win is too small—we want to hear it all, and we will be excessively enthusiastic about whatever it is! You can call in for your friends, too, because giving shout-outs is one of our favorite things.  “Solving Your Small-Town People Challenges”: Have a tough issue in your community? We want to help. Call in and tell us about your problem, and we'll solve it on an episode of the podcast. Want to remain anonymous? Totally cool, we can be all secretive and stuff. We're suave like that.  If you've got a humblebrag or a tricky people problem, call 701-203-3337 and leave a message with the deets. Vermillion red, vibrant orange, golden yellows, even violet – we're enchanted by the colours that make up a stunning sunset or sunrise. CrowdScience listener Paulina, a lighting designer from Chile, often uses the sunsets she sees from her balcony as inspiration for her designs. And during the day and night, the sky can be all sorts of shades of blue. But Paulina wonders why, in the colour palette of the sky, she never sees any green. CrowdScience gazes skywards to investigate. Presenter Caroline Steel travels to the Arctic Circle to meet atmospheric physicist Katie Herlingshaw. Katie explains why we usually see the sky as blue, and what makes it transform into fiery reds and oranges at sunrise and sunset. We also peer into the science of perception, as neuroscientist Bevil Conway tells us what's going on in our eyes (and brains) to make the colours we see in the sky. But there are some rare occasions when the sky can appear to be green, such as in a rainbow or a green flash at sunset. And then there is the spellbinding green glow of the aurora - the Northern and Southern Lights. We visit the northernmost aurora observatory in the world to try to understand this phenomenon. Are green skies more common than we think? In this episode of the Journey of My Mother's Son podcast, I talk with Joe Engler. Joe played for our organization back in 2003.  He was on our Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League (ACBL) team between his sophomore and junior seasons at Minot State University in North Dakota.  I refer to him as one of my old players, but he never actually played a game for me, he just played in our organization.  He was one of the players who I really connected with while he was with us. Joe and I talk about the life lessons that the game of baseball taught him and how he is using them today in both his work and personal life.  Joe is now an Associate Professor and Director of School Psychology at Gonzaga University. Dr. Engler received his BA in psychology at Minot State University in Minot, ND and his Ph.D. in school psychology at The University of South Dakota in Vermillion, SD. Dr. Engler began his professional career as a school psychologist in Tooele, UT and remains active in the profession through advocacy and leadership at the local, state, and national level. Dr. Engler holds the Nationally Certified School Psychologist credential through the National Association of School Psychologists and is a diplomate in school neuropsychology through the American Board of School Neuropsychology. His research interests include preschool assessment, critical evaluation of psychometric tests, and parental involvement. Joe recently co-authored his second book titled, “Essentials of Addressing Infants, Toddlers, and Pre-schoolers.”  It will be released in early April of 2025. We wrap the conversation up by talking about Joe's recent love for playing music.  He, his wife, and a group of friends recently started the cover band, Close Enough, in which Joe plays lead guitar. Joe was also inducted into the Minot State University Hall of Fame in September of 2024. If you're ever in the Spokane area and want to see the band play somewhere, check them out on social media on either Instagram or Facebook.

Two heads are better than one. Which is a simple axiom that doesn't always apply to everything. Take engines, for example. There are probably times where it makes sense to do that like in certain V configurations. But why would you want that in a four cylinder? This is a mystery no one has solved to this day. The real estate market may be in its winter slump, but spring is just around the corner—only five weeks away!Higher interest rates have kept many home buyers and sellers off the sidelines in recent years. But could a change be on the horizon? Today, mortgage expert Dale Vermillion joins us with a market forecast and some practical advice on how to move forward.Dale Vermillion is the author of Navigating the Mortgage Maze: The Simple Truth About Financing Your Home. This book covers everything you need to know about securing a mortgage—all from a biblical perspective. Is the Housing Market About to Shift? For the past few years, many homeowners have stayed put due to high interest rates, a phenomenon known as the lock-in effect. However, recent data suggests a shift might be on the horizon.Existing home sales rose by 6.1% in November 2024, signaling a potential increase in market activity. While December and January are traditionally slow, spring is expected to bring renewed momentum as buyers become more eager to move. Consumer confidence is growing, and as patience wears thin, many are deciding to buy now and refinance later.Should Buyers Accept Current Interest Rates? Many potential buyers have been waiting for rates to drop before making a move. But sometimes, waiting is no longer an option. Life goes on, and people need to relocate for jobs, family, or other personal reasons. That said, budgeting wisely is key. Before purchasing a home, we recommend:Assessing what you can truly afford Creating a solid budget to plan for mortgage payments Considering the long-term potential to refinance in a few yearsWhile mortgage rates remain higher than the record lows of a few years ago, waiting indefinitely for the “perfect” rate may mean missing out on opportunities. What to Expect From Interest Rates in 2025Many homebuyers have been banking on rate cuts to ease affordability, but will they actually happen?Only one or two rate cuts are expected in 2025, and even those are not guaranteed. The biggest factor influencing mortgage rates is inflation, which is tied to federal deficit control. Unlike previous periods of low mortgage rates, the government is unlikely to buy trillions in mortgage-backed securities to artificially lower rates.Bottom line: Mortgage rates are likely to stay between 6% and 7% for most of 2025, with a slight possibility of dipping into the high 5% range.Navigating the 2025 Housing MarketWhether you're looking to buy or sell, market conditions are changing, and understanding them is crucial. For Sellers:Home values are flattening or declining in some areas. In Q3 of 2024, annual real estate appreciation dropped to 2.5% (an average of $5,700 per home), starkly contrasting with Q2's 8% growth ($25,000 per home). If you're considering selling, now may be the best time to maximize your home's value before the market shifts further. For Buyers:Affordability should be your top priority. Home price appreciation may slow down in 2025, making it a good time to enter the market without facing rapid price hikes. While interest rates remain elevated, they will eventually decline, giving buyers a future opportunity to refinance. Homeownership still offers significant tax benefits, making it a worthwhile long-term investment.Mortgage Trends: What's Changed? If it's been a while since you've looked into getting a mortgage, you may be surprised by the range of options now available.New mortgage products cater to diverse financial situations. Credit challenges? There are more flexible loan options than before. Need down payment assistance? Programs exist to help qualified buyers. The housing market is shifting, and while interest rates may not drop dramatically, buyers and sellers alike have opportunities in 2025. For those needing to move, careful planning and budgeting will be essential. And for sellers, this could be a good time to capitalize on home values before potential declines. No matter your situation, making an informed, strategic decision is key, and consulting professionals can confidently help you navigate the mortgage landscape. For more expert insights on financing your home, check out The Mortgage Maze: The Simple Truth About Financing Your Home by Dale Vermillion. On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:I'm 37, with a family of five. I've been building a home on the property I bought three years ago, using cash so far. I have the funds for the roof this year, but I need to take out a loan or wait three more years to pay cash for the rest. Should I take out a loan to finish it sooner or wait and pay cash?I'm 56 and about to take early retirement with a $1,400 monthly pension. Then, I'll return to work in the private sector, making more. I have a 6% mortgage and a 7% HELOC. Should I invest or use the pension money to pay down my debts?I'm 76 years old and just finished a messy divorce. I have about $200,000 to invest, but I don't have a house, car payments, or significant debt. What should I do with this money? My husband and I are 54 and 57 years old. In 2019, we had $200,000 in savings, but due to COVID-19 and life circumstances, we've depleted all our savings and retirement accounts. We now earn only $65,000 combined. The home fires may be burning in your home as we together listen on the radio and watch TV about the travel challenges many are facing throughout the country. Upon my return from travel to Seattle during the holiday season, I was welcomed with 20 degree below zero weather. However, my heart was warmed as I listened to the phone messages and read the many cards, letters, and precious thoughts which I received - you all really made my day. Among the thoughts sent to me was a letter from my friend, Dr Green in Vermillion, South Dakota. She included thoughts from an unknown author, which I feel are so warm and precious and need to be shared with you, dear readers of this Warm Thoughts column. "When the song of the angels is still, when the star in the sky is gone, when the kings and princes are home, when the shepherds are back with the sheep, the work of Christmas begins to find the lost, to heal the broken, to feed the hungry, to release the prisoner, to rebuild the nations, to bring peace among people, to make music in the heart." I was also reminded the Lifelines Magazine that January 21st is National Hugging Day, and a dear friend in Florida sent me the poem entitled, "Hugs for Everyone." "It's wondrous what a hug can do. A hug can break the language barrier and make your travels so much merrier. No need to fret about the store of them. The more you give, the more there are of them. So stretch those arms without delay, and give someone a hug today." Thank you, dear friend - a hug for you across the miles. Words of Wisdom: Patience is the ability to idle your motor when you feel like stripping your gears. Author Unknown. Instead of counting your days, make every day count in this new year. For all those who have suffered in the past incredible pain, may we remember that the light that sheltered the darkness can put together the broken pieces of our hearts. Author Unknown. Please accept my hug to help you, a true friend. Remember January 21st is National Hugging Day! Warm Thoughts from the Little Home on the Prairie Over a Cup of Tea by Dr Luetta G. One minute after John Gaskins and Matt Zimmer walked out of a nearly hour-long conversation with the new SDSU football in his office, Jackson actually broke the news via text that USD coach Bob Nielson is retiring. So, John and Zim begin with a 12-minute reaction to the 65-year-old's decision to step down after a nine seasons in Vermillion and 32 overall as a head coach, walking off with an 11-3 season and the Coyotes' first Missouri Valley Football Conference championship and first FCS semifinal appearance in school history — just two years after the Yotes finished 3-8 after a blowout home loss, leaving fans wondering if his job was secure. Defensive coordinator Travis Johansen takes over the program. Then, 54 minutes with Jackson, who just six days ago was introduced as the replacement to good friend and John Stiegelmeier heir apparent Jimmy Rogers, who left for five times his salary at Washington State and took his entire coaching staff and over a dozen players with him. A recruiting war between the schools ensued. Jackson discusses his first week on the job, acclimation to a galvanized group of players, the staff he is hiring, a deep into dealing with NIL, and how much Chase Mason and Quentin Christensen kept together the core of the 2025 roster as fellow "recruiting coordinators" to keep as many Jacks in Brookings as possible.

North Dakota State returns to Vermillion, South Dakota Saturday with a chance to win the Missouri Valley Football Conference title outright and likely clinch a top playoff seed. The Bison will face fourth ranked South Dakota, the Coyotes are having another great season, coming in with an 8-2 record and 6-1 in the league. USD's two losses came to Wisconsin and South Dakota State, the latter in overtime. USD has never won the Valley in it's decade-plus tenure in the conference, the Coyotes would grab a share of the championship if they're able to beat the Bison and put themselves into the conversation of a high seed. NDSU is relatively healthy heading into this game, with senior wide receiver RaJa Nelson returning for his fourth game of the season. Nelson will be able to use a redshirt this season and return for a sixth season of eligibilty in 2025. The Forum's Jeff Kolpack and WDAY-TV's Dom Izzo preview the game and look ahead to what the win would mean for each team.

We talk about our beliefs around work, family, creativity, our passion for serving humanity, and how we are all made for more. You'll see why I chose them to be a part of this series on Beliefs. And I can reassure you that after knowing them for years, they are the real deal. They “live out” what they believe. No matter what beliefs you hold or where you are in your faith, my hope is you will find a comfortable seat at this table. So, pull up a chair. May you find value and inspiration as we talk about what it means to live more valiantly as we address what limits us and dare to believe in the “more” we each long for. Ryan and Cody are doing something unconventional… quite uncommon, actually. Hence, the name of their work, UNCMN Creative, and their ministry, Uncommon Good. If you drink South Dakota-made wine or beer, Jim Schade and Eldon Nygaard are the guys to thank. Because prior to the South Dakota 1996 Farm Winery Act legalized commercial production of wine in South Dakota, you couldn't make an alcoholic beverage in South Dakota and sell it since Prohibition.  So, Eldon came up with the idea to start a legal license for making and selling wine, wrote the legislation and Jim took it to the legislators at the state capital in Pierre. The bill passed. Eldon got the first license and began the state's first winery, Valiant Vineyards of Vermillion. Four years after the bill passed, Jim and his wife, Nancy, founded Schadé Vineyard and Winery west of Volga. In this amusing episode, Jim shares where they first fell in love with the wine industry and why he quit his job in Pierre before he applied for the third winery license in South Dakota. Plus, you'll learn why they hosted inventory reduction parties at their house, which two fruits don't work well for winemaking, the funny story about how their winery got its name, how they became sponsors of The Iditarod, and how caller I.D. killed their original approach to picking grapes.  Jim has handed the vineyard reins over to Dillon Ringling, even though Dillon broke all three of Jim's rules and now hosts weddings and events at the vineyard with the most beautiful sunsets as a backdrop.  Jim is still pretty involved with the business. And having been on the ground floor of South Dakota wine since the late 90s, Jim admits that what he loves most about the winery hasn't been the wine, is has been the people and relationships behind the pours.  Schadé Vineyard & Winery  21095 463rd Avenue, Volga, SD https://schadevineyard.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/schadevineyard/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SchadeVineyardandWinery Airbnb listing: https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/50269250?guests=1&adults=2&s=67&unique_share_id=9d8fa87b-13ed-42d5-9c18-be1aac27f316 Staci Mergenthal RandomSweets.com #ourSweetMidwestLife Website randomsweets.com Instagram @potatoesandmittens Instagram @randomsweets Facebook Random Sweets Pinterest @staciperry Email: staci@randomsweets.com --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/potatoesandmittens/support

The Fed is scheduled to meet next week. Will it lower interest rates again? With one rate cut already on the books and perhaps two more coming before the end of the year…folks are wondering what effect all this will have on mortgages and home sales. Dale Vermillion joins us today to talk about it.Dale Vermillion is the author of Navigating the Mortgage Maze: The Simple Truth About Financing Your Home. This book covers everything you need to know about securing a mortgage—all from a biblical perspective.Current Mortgage Rate TrendsWith recent shifts in the economy, many are wondering about mortgage rates and how decisions from the Federal Reserve impact them. While the Fed recently lowered interest rates by half a percent, the market already anticipated this move. Mortgage rates dropped nearly a full percent before the Fed's decision, but they've since started to climb back up. Currently, the national average for mortgage rates sits between 6.30% and 6.40%, and experts predict that they will remain in the low to mid-6% range for the rest of the year. For those hoping rates drop below 5%, it's unlikely to happen anytime soon. Leading analysts say we likely won't see those numbers until 2025 or later.Despite the changes in interest rates, home sales have remained relatively flat. While there has been a slight increase in home purchases, with mortgage locks up by 8% from last year, the real activity may come from new construction. Existing homeowners are holding on to their properties due to the so-called "rate lock effect," where people are reluctant to sell because they have locked in low mortgage rates. However, once rates drop, we'll most likely see a surge in home sales around 2025 and 2026.Should You Buy or Refinance Now?For those trying to decide whether to buy a home or refinance, there are pros and cons in every market, but several factors are working in favor of buyers right now:Lower Rates: While mortgage rates aren't at historic lows, they are lower than they've been in recent years.Less Competition: With fewer buyers in the market, now is an opportune time to find a home without the fierce competition of a booming market. If you're renting, it may be a good time to buy as long as you can afford the monthly payments. Buying a home builds equity and provides tax benefits, making it a financially sound decision for many. When it comes to refinancing, do not refinance if it means extending the term of your mortgage. Extending your loan term will wipe out any savings you gain from a lower rate, costing you tens of thousands of dollars in the long run. Only refinance if you can lower your payment while keeping or shortening your mortgage term.Seeking Wisdom in Home FinancingBiblical principles should guide all of our financial decisions, including home financing. Romans 13:8 tells us, "Owe no one anything except to love each other." This verse reminds us that as stewards of God's resources, we should aim to live debt-free and manage our finances responsibly.Navigating the mortgage market can be challenging, but by staying informed and grounded in biblical principles, you can make wise decisions that honor God and secure your financial future. Whether buying your first home or considering a refinance, start with a budget and avoid taking on unnecessary debt. Always ensure your financial decisions align with God's Word and your long-term financial goals. For more insights on mortgage financing and faith-based financial wisdom, you can explore Dale's book, Navigating the Mortgage Maze: The Simple Truth About Financing Your Home, and continue to seek guidance on making informed, biblically sound decisions in your financial life.On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:I need to change investment companies from Vanguard, as they are becoming more digital-focused. I'm looking for a company that offers a directed beneficiary program where I can designate beneficiaries per account and a simple process for Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCD) where I can call and request a check be sent directly to the charity.I have existing investments and a financial advisor. I heard you discuss investing in companies aligned with biblical values. Can you provide a resource or recommendation for identifying companies or funds that match those values if I still need to be invested in them?I have two insurance policies, and they are burial policies for my wife and I. They're about $200 between the two monthly and $25,000 each. I'm questioning whether I would be better off just adding that money to my investments or keeping my insurance. I'm 63, my wife is 65, and we're in pretty good health, but I hope we have quite a few more years before that would be necessary. We're at the point in our lives where we need to downsize, so I was wondering if we need to tithe on our sale before investing in another primary residence when we sell our primary home and purchase another one.Resources Mentioned:Navigating the Mortgage Maze: The Simple Truth About Financing Your Home by Dale VermillionList of Faith-Based Investment FundsLook At The Sparrows: A 21-Day Devotional on Financial Fear and AnxietyRich Toward God: A Study on the Parable of the Rich FoolFind a Certified Kingdom Advisor (CKA) or Certified Christian Financial Counselor (CertCFC)FaithFi App Remember, you can call in to ask your questions most days at (800) 525-7000. Battery revenues in ERCOT in June 2024 were 85% lower than June 2023, with average earnings of $45/kW (annualized), compared with when batteries earned a massive $309/kW/year in 2023. With the summer months historically providing the bulk of high revenue days for battery energy storage, operators would expect the sixth hottest summer on record to provide a similar picture, but that has not been the case in 2024. Increased competition in Ancillary Services, a boom in renewables buildout and changes to strategic operations have resulted in a very different picture. In this episode, Brandt Vermillion, ERCOT Market Lead at Modo Energy joins Quentin to give us insight into what has been driving battery revenues in ERCOT over the summer months.
