The Minister of Electricity and Energy, Kgosientsho Ramokgopa has announced a massive R2.2 trillion investment in South Africa's energy sector. The Integrated Resource Plan aims to stabilize the country's energy supply, attract investment, and promote economic growth. Ramokgopa emphasized a diversified energy mix, including coal, nuclear, hydro, solar, and wind power. Pushing Parallels is a new group exhibition on at the Arts House Trust, Pah Homestead. Showcasing a diverse range of multidisciplinary artists from across Aotearoa, the exhibition features works from The Arts House Trust collection alongside invited artists who, although formally trained in one discipline, have ventured into new artistic territories.  Pushing Parallels encourages the artists to experiment, pushing the limits of their mediums to create a playground of colour and form to re-learn and question traditional art practices. Each room within the exhibition serves as a chapter, distinctively coloured and themed, yet interconnected through relationships between material, process, and scale.  Sofia spoke to the co-curators of Pushing Parallels, Abbie La Rooy, Kiki Hall, and Michael Prosee about the exhibition and the curation process.

Het coalitieakkoord wordt uitgewerkt, Prinsjesdag komt eraan en tot die tijd lichten we in De Dag een paar Hete Haagse Hangijzers uit. Vandaag: financiën. Na een marathonoverleg van tien uur was vorige week vrijdagochtend de boodschap van het kabinet dat de coalitiepartijen het eens zijn geworden over de begroting voor volgend jaar. Maar, vertelt politiek verslaggever Marleen de Rooy, dat ging niet zonder slag of stoot. Financiën is altijd een moeilijk onderwerp, zegt ze, zeker als er zoals bij deze vier partijen een fundamentele ideeënstrijd achter de cijfers schuilgaat. En helemáál als er onderling weinig vertrouwen is.  In deze podcast zet zij op een rij wat de plannen nu zijn: wie krijgt er geld, en wie niet? En Vinzenz Ziesemer is directeur van het Instituut voor Publieke Economie, een denktank in Den Haag. Hij doet veel onderzoek naar begrotingsbeleid en hield de plannen zoals ze nu bekend zijn tegen het licht. Luisteraars! De compensatieregeling voor gedupeerden van de toeslagenaffaire is een compleet fiasco. 'Ik sluit niet dat we hier nog eens een parlementaire enquête over krijgen,' zei Peter Heijkoop, wethouder te Dordrecht en kopstuk bij de Vereniging Nederlandse Gemeenten, deze week in een interview met Algemeen Dagblad. Ik (Jesse) begrijp wel wat hij bedoelt. Waar eerder naar de kleinste fouten werd gespeurd om grote bedragen aan toeslagen terug te vorderen, wordt nu naar de minste aanleiding gezocht om grote bedragen aan compensatie uit te keren. Het is makkelijk om achteraf te constateren dat het uit de hand is gelopen. Het is wat zinniger om dat te constateren op het moment dat belangrijke beslissingen worden gemaakt. En de compensatieregeling is rijp voor een contracyclisch geluid. De ervaring van de meest ernstig gedupeerden is inmiddels maatgevend gemaakt voor de hele groep van zo'n 33.000 gedupeerden. Maar wat doorgaat voor 'gedupeerde' heeft soms nauwelijks verband met daadwerkelijke dupering. Een boze brief – waarbij niks is teruggevorderd – geeft inmiddels ook al recht op enorme bedragen en compensatie. Wie is aangemerkt als gedupeerde van de toeslagenaffaire heeft namelijk recht op 30.000 euro, kwijtschelding van alle publieke schulden (waaronder studiefinanciering, belastingschulden en zorgverzekeringsschulden), kwijtschelding van private schulden, 2.000 en 10.000 euro voor elk kind, 10.000 euro voor ex-partner. Daarnaast is er nog recht op een integrale beoordeling (waarbij nog meer dan 30.000 euro kan worden verkregen), en een ruimhartige beoordeling van de 'werkelijke schade' (waarbij nog eens bedragen van meer dan 100.000 euro naar gedupeerden kan gaan). Staat dit nog in enige verhouding tot de geleden schade? De laatste keer dat ik over de compensatieregeling schreef, in 2022, zou het nog zo'n 5 miljard euro kosten – dat is inmiddels opgelopen tot 7,2 miljard euro, waarbij er in stukken voor de formatie gewag wordt gemaakt van tegenvallers van nog eens 1 tot 2 miljard euro. Er werken straks 2.350 mensen bij de herstelorganisatie, terwijl er in 2013 bij Belastingdienst/Toeslagen slechts 600 man werkten. De politiek blijkt onmachtig om het tij te keren. Sterker nog: de regeling loopt alleen maar verder uit de klauwen, dankzij onmogelijke beloftes en onwerkbare eisen.
