Steve Swart was on the bandstand and in college at CMU just in time to see owner Harvey Vanier turn The Foolery into Rubbles. Mt. Pleasant has always been at the dead center of the state of Michigan when it comes to cross-over touring due to WCMU and the college music market. One quick look north from Kalamazoo, Ann Arbor, Detroit and Lansing, all eyes hit the college town. The blended artistry from roots folk, to deep blues, power pop, metal, and first generation punk all huddled in this marketplace, long after the '60s Flint scene dispersed.     Yes, you could see Texas blues man Gatemouth Brown, followed by funky rockin' Fishbone, and then a tour stop for the punk legends Dead Milkmen. Or how about Blues Brother Matt 'Guitar' Murphy? Verve Pipe? Etc...this was a Michigan hub town thanks to the venues, Theatres, and WCMU radio.    While Swart notes that much remains in historical value, the word-of-mouth of the area's scene is more of a recollection and myth, than the hub it once was. North of Mt. Pleasant lies Interlochen, which seems to have taken on the persona that Mt. Pleasant used to be known for. A quick look at Traverse City, Petoskey, Alpena, or over west to Big Rapids or Grand Rapids, or even east to the Tri-Cities and you can see speckles of the majestic college town scene. Swart is taking the Mt. Pleasant music history seriously and is not only documenting it, but releasing lost shows on YouTube. The Flintstones and the Rubbles are invited to a free vacation at a beach hotel by Fred's old friend the owner. Unaware there is a motive for the generosity.

Fred is hired to impersonate a rich business man look-alike temporarily, leading to confusion and friction from his wife and the Rubbles.

To save money on meat, Fred decides to turn his vacation into a hunting trip, where the Flintstones and Rubbles meet up with a talking dinosaur.

Well in this episode we discuss two cartoon classics and like their creators they are two legendary names that even 60 years later we remember fondly, The Flintstones and The Jetsons. So get comfy with the uncomfortable and update your view of what's normal as we take you Back to the Pilot! The Flintstones (00:01:18) This popular animated television cartoon featured two Stone Age families, the Flintstones and their neighbors, the Rubbles. Much of the humor was based on its comic portrayals of modern conveniences, reinterpreted using Stone Age 'technology.' In the pilot episode friends Fred and Barney attempt to get out of an opera by faking ill all the while they just want to go bowling. The Jetsons (00:41:23) The Jetsons are a family living in the future. They have all manner of technological appliances to help around the house, but it doesn't seem to be enough. George Jetson is tasked by his wife to finally ask for that raise and in the attempt to do so he ends up inviting his overbearing boss Mr. Spacely to dinner. The Casino can be an intoxicating place in more way than one, especially if you like gambling which I don't. The unquestionable pathway to happiness that gambling guarantees, the glamour, the risk, the reward, the shared social experience: it all sounds awful, just as fake as the Eiffel Tower that famously adorns the Vegas strip. This weeks top 5 promises all of the subtlety and style of that famous American city, a mecca for the perpetually misguided and the intellectually stunted, so of course we're big fans.Sitting shotgun in a car driven by Dominic "Dom" Toretto (Vin Diesel) must be a terrifying experience as even a routine trip to Tesco would become a bowel-emptying, physics-defying descent down the side of a sidescraper. Were I ever to find myself in that scenario I'd exert a measure of control over the situation by monopolising the stereo so I could at least listen to Kruder & Dorfmeister while firemen cut my lifeless body from the flaming wreckage. Yes we're taking a plunge into the Fast & Furious franchise and we're starting with 2015's Furious 7 (or Fast & Furious 7 to give it its onscreen title). The film is overshadowed to a degree by the death of co-lead Paul Walker who was tragically killed in a car accident, with his scenes completed using unseen footage and his brothers as stand-ins. For a franchise sincerely built upon an unshakeable belief that strangers can become family, and a clearly close-knit cast operating like a family, this lends the movie an unmistakeable ironic sadness.The Flintstones, remember them? They were an animated sitcom family who routinely abused animals in order to perform menial tasks and lived sexually liberated lives with their neighbours, The Rubbles and to a lesser extent, their pet dinosaur Dino. Arguably the most famous and beloved of the animation powerhouse Hanna-Barbera's output, everyone remembers the theme tune at the very least and if pressed I'm sure it would be universally acknowledged as a classic. A key aspect of their predatory habits (how this was learned from fossils is not revealed) was to keep their heads in the grass to conceal their enormous teeth, a strategy that may or may not be shared by certain mimics of female fireflies. You can probably imagine that given all the discussion of neck width, the origin of the species, and the mechanics of hybrid sex, we're going to need more than one episode to fully treat this topic.
