Eric interviews a carnivorous plant specialist who discusses his passion for these plants, starting from his childhood in the 1970s. He details the challenges and rewards of cultivating various carnivorous plants, including the Darlingtonia californica (Cobra Lily), Venus flytraps, and Sarracenia. The conversation also touches upon plant care techniques, the importance of water quality, and the community of carnivorous plant enthusiasts, including clubs and online resources. Finally, the interviewee shares his insights on plant propagation and the unique aspects of these fascinating plants. Key Takeaways... Carnivorous plants thrive outdoors in full sun and require pure water sources, like distilled water, for optimal growth. Acclimating carnivorous plants gradually to outdoor conditions is crucial to prevent sunburn, especially for greenhouse-grown specimens. Joining a local carnivorous plant club provides a valuable resource for knowledge sharing, plant swaps, and connecting with fellow enthusiasts. Replicating the natural processes of fire, such as incorporating ash into the soil, can be beneficial for some carnivorous plants. Sharing the fascination of carnivorous plants with children fosters appreciation for the natural world and encourages conservation efforts. I was not raised having a steady diet of fish. It was a rarity but always appreciated when it happened. I was raised on a farm with your basic meat and potatoes diet. I loved beef and poultry and just about any and all vegetables (except celery, try as I might, I never was able to enjoy it). Life goes on, I get older and find that many of the foods I enjoyed in my youth are no longer user-friendly. So, I no longer eat them. I find that if I eat a small portion occasionally, I am ok. As I found out earlier this week, the word occasionally is truly key. I had beef liver two days in a row. Truly a mistake.I recently listened to a podcast about the value of eating organ meat. I always enjoyed liver and onions (yes, it can really be a tasty meal) so decided to give it a try. You can no longer buy it from the butcher's counter. It is in the frozen food section of the grocery store. Since it is frozen you need to prepare the whole package once it is thawed. I am the only one who likes it, so that means two days in a row of eating beef. Something I have not done in years. Suffice to say, day two was not a pleasant experience. I will not bore you with the details. It was hours of intense abdominal pain. It still feels like my stomach was forcibly removed, stomped upon, and put back in. Each day it feels a tad better, thank goodness.Lesson learned. For me, I will only eat meat once a month. We are all different and need to figure out our own path. We are going to be sharing a side of beef next month from a local farm who has been our neighbor for decades. We know it has been raised without all the questionable things that are fed to commercially raised cattle. I will try beef again when it arrives. There is a good chance it is not the beef but the additives that my body is rebelling against. I will keep you posted.Bottom line, listen to your body in your path to cleaning up your diet. At least for me, it is not worth the pain and suffering of eating foods which I know are reactive. There are lots of options. Do not hesitate to take notes in a journal to keep track of your food experience history.Till next time, Move Well, Stay Healthy, Be Happy and every day identify at least one thing for which you are grateful. The 5% Club is a reader-supported publication. These spooky species have adapted to capture prey in some of Florida's most nutrient-poor environments. We'll talk about how they trap their meals, their role in the ecosystem, and where you can spot these unique plants across the state. Many of the species are state or federally threatened, due to illegal harvesting from the wild and the destruction of their wetland habitats. Seeds or plants can be purchased from reputable nurseries and seed sources. Many species available for purchase are native to Florida and can be grown in rain gardens or in sunny spots. • Support habitat restoration and maintenance through prescribed fire. In Florida, many of these species are also fire dependent, like the ecosystems they grow in – yes, even the wetlands! • Build memories with these species – seek them out, learn about them with your friends and family - https://www.flawildflowers.org/2022-spring-bloom-report/ Sources for this Episode: Pinellas Predatory Plants - https://youtu.be/gG0XNhSnSvQ?si=_27ONm-oA3pNOHH6 • Carnivorous Plants - https://gardeningsolutions.ifas.ufl.edu/plants/ornamentals/carnivorous-plants/ • Carnivorous plants – novel natives with showy flowers - https://www.flawildflowers.org/2022-spring-bloom-report/ • Carnivorous Plants – Both Rare and Well Done – Along the Apalachicola – UPDATED - https://blog.wfsu.org/blog-coastal-health/2022/04/carnivorous-plants-both-rare-and-well-done-along-the-apalachicola/ • Florida's Carnivorous Plants - https://ifasbooks.ifas.ufl.edu/p-1728-floridas-carnivorous-plants.aspx If you enjoyed this episode, please consider sharing it with a friend who might enjoy learning about Florida's natural areas and the wild things that live here! Dr. Anthony Chaffee emphasizes the importance of listening to your body's hunger and satiety signals, rather than relying on strict calorie counting. Anthony Chaffey is a doctor who give us some amazing thoughts on how our body functions. We can understand our biochemistry to take care of ourselves. Carnivorous diets replace carbohydrates and fiber while addressing the root cause of issues such as autoimmune diseases. This type of diet helps with Crohn's. The panel discusse the benefits of a carnivore diet and how it can improve overall health. They also touch on how a carnivore diet can help with specific health issues, such as nutrient deficiencies, bone density, and inflammation. They advise against taking supplements unless there is a known deficiency and suggest getting nutrients from animal sources. They also address questions about specific health concerns and recommend consulting a doctor if symptoms persist. They also touch on the use of MCT oil, with differing opinions on its benefits: The carnivore diet can be modified to help with cancer by focusing on limiting glucose and glutamine in the diet, keeping the glucose ketone index below two (ideally below one) through a combination of a high-fat carnivore diet and fasting or the use of glutamine-disrupting agents like DON. Additionally, it may be helpful to limit the amount of deuterium (heavy hydrogen) in the body, as studies have shown this can damage cancer cells. To ensure adequate digestion, make sure to thoroughly chew your food. - If you're experiencing bowel issues while on a carnivore diet, it could be due to excess fat intake, eating too quickly, or not chewing your food enough. - Consider eliminating carbonated beverages, caffeine, artificial sweeteners, and any other potential irritating substances from your diet. - If you're experiencing gut issues on a carnivore diet, try incorporating some live culture yogurt Thank you so much for listening to my podcast.
