On this special podcast of "Behind the Mitten," co-host John Gonzalez checks in with good friend Paul Beachnau of the Gaylord Tourism Bureau about a two-day ice storm in Northern Michigan that has completely devasted the area. Thousands of people across the region remain without power in freezing weather, with some roads still blocked due to downed trees and powerlines. On Monday (March 31, 2025), Gov. Gretchen Whitmer declared a state of emergency for Otsego, Oscoda, Montmorency, Presque Isle, Emmet, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, Crawford, Mackinac and Alpena counties in order to help with response and recovery efforts. Paul took time to talk to us after a day of helping neighbors clear debris.PHOTO: Eileen TusseyReleased by the Gaylord Tourism Bureau on April 1, 2025As you may know, Gaylord and much of northern Michigan was hit by an ice storm that started on March 29th. Most of our community has been without power since that time. If you plan to travel to the area in the next few weeks, please call ahead first to ensure you will have power and access to your lodging. There are many trees and powerlines down, but the amazing linemen and first responders are working tirelessly to restore everything. We appreciate their efforts more than words can say! Please bear with us as we work on clearing our roads and trails; the cleanup may take some time. We're optimistic that our community will come together, just like before, to reclaim Gaylord as the outdoor wonderland we all love. Thanks for your patience and support! Stay tuned for updates on our progress—we can't wait to welcome you back!Stay up to date at gaylordmichigan.net.

It's a hodgepodge this week on Behind the Mitten, with stories coming at you from all over Michigan. We start off the show with Angie Quinn, the executive director of the Michigan Legacy Art Park, which is located at Crystal Mountain in Thompsonville. We recently got to do a snowy hike through this very unique art experience, and interviewed Angie trailside afterwards. Spread out over thirty beautiful acres, the Art Park boasts two miles of hiking trails that take you around almost fifty different sculptures. The park has been leasing this space from the resort, but just last year Crystal donated the land to the organization permanently. It is a super cool way to experience art, you can enter the park from dawn to dusk, on foot, snowshoes or skis. Then we have a first on Behind the Mitten, as Amy interivews her husband Jerry Adams. A graduate of the University of Michigan, Jerry shares some of his former favorite haunts, and how they have changed over the years. With a daughter currently attending U of M, we visit regularly, and recently got to enjoy burgers and fries at Krazy Jim's Blimpie Burger, a favorite no matter when you graduated. We'll explain how to order these famous burgers, the key is to just answer the question.Next, we'll catch up with our friend Mike Laing, who co-owns two wineries with his brother Peter, Mawby Vineyards and Big Little Wjnes. From all-bubbly to traditional wines, the vineyards make some great liquids, including the super fun, and totally NA Safe Sex from Mawby, and sparkling non-alcoholic additin to their lineup. Learn more about Safe Sex:https://www.spreaker.com/episode/let-s-have-safe-sex-this-valentine-s-day-with-mawby-vineyards--64358477Finally, Brant Austin from Austin Brothers Beer Company in Alpena joins us again. The last time we had them on was a lifetime ago, pre-pandemic. They are celebrating ten years in business at the tip of the pointer here in Michigan, and brothers Blake and Brant couldn't be prouder. Honestly, so are we. This family moved from Californai after falling in love with Alpena on a Griswold-family road trip, and they've built a thriving local business in their adopted home town.

Steve Swart was on the bandstand and in college at CMU just in time to see owner Harvey Vanier turn The Foolery into Rubbles. Mt. Pleasant has always been at the dead center of the state of Michigan when it comes to cross-over touring due to WCMU and the college music market. One quick look north from Kalamazoo, Ann Arbor, Detroit and Lansing, all eyes hit the college town. The blended artistry from roots folk, to deep blues, power pop, metal, and first generation punk all huddled in this marketplace, long after the '60s Flint scene dispersed. Yes, you could see Texas blues man Gatemouth Brown, followed by funky rockin' Fishbone, and then a tour stop for the punk legends Dead Milkmen. Or how about Blues Brother Matt 'Guitar' Murphy? Verve Pipe? Etc...this was a Michigan hub town thanks to the venues, Theatres, and WCMU radio. While Swart notes that much remains in historical value, the word-of-mouth of the area's scene is more of a recollection and myth, than the hub it once was. North of Mt. Pleasant lies Interlochen, which seems to have taken on the persona that Mt. Pleasant used to be known for. A quick look at Traverse City, Petoskey, Alpena, or over west to Big Rapids or Grand Rapids, or even east to the Tri-Cities and you can see speckles of the majestic college town scene. Swart is taking the Mt. Pleasant music history seriously and is not only documenting it, but releasing lost shows on YouTube. Steve has compiled a fantastic episode that not only covers his music, but some of his rock/metal expeditions (magnetite)--which is not rock/metal like you think ;) Tune in and check this out too! Chip Amoe is Michigan State University's new director of sustainability, and he's leading the Office of Sustainability at MSU. What attracted you to MSU?“We're the oldest land-grant university in the country, and so we've got a great history. You've got great proximity here to our state leaders, and we're doing all the things that are important for sustainability in the future. I truly believe that climate change is the biggest threat that we all face across the entire globe, and that it is the existential threat that we all must address. But here at MSU, we're working on a lot of the things that have an impact, not just on climate change, but sustainability broadly. Everything from packaging to supply chain to agriculture, all these things are critical to addressing sustainability and improving the health of our people and our planet.”How did you originally get interested in this area and why you're passionate about it?“I've always been passionate about the planet. I grew up in Michigan. My formative years were in Alpena, and I've lived in Grosse Pointe and Ann Arbor and spent time in Traverse City. I'm really all in on Michigan and its natural resources. It's always been a passion. I started recycling before it was cool and was pushing my parents to do it. I'm the guy who digs the recycling out of the trash in my own home and pulls it out.“I've always believed that our built environment has a big impact on our health and that as we're redesigning and redeveloping cities, and I had a particular passion about doing that in Detroit, that we needed to do that with an eye towards health if we're going to redesign and redevelop cities. That's what got me into it. I'm an advocate for a more sustainable and healthier environment.”What's the mission of the Office of Sustainability? How is it evolving, what is your role, and where do you want to see things go?“Early on I'm listening and learning. How do we help continue to support the state in its efforts? How do we support businesses and other industries in their efforts? And how do we lead by example? That's really where we're going to be focused early on is how do we lead by example and be a living lab for products, new ideas, and new ways of doing things. And then we want to really be a resource to the state and its industry, giving them practical ways to do things and helping them to implement sustainability because it's going to take more than just us doing it. It's going to take the entire state, the entire nation, and the entire world, frankly, to be able to do this. And if we could provide ways to make it easier for people to make the healthy, more sustainable choice, that's what I want to do to help really expand this because we need to move fast on it. It needs to happen now.”What are some of your short- and long-term goals?“Short term right now is really to just get an understanding of all the great work that we're doing on campus. We have our own MRF, which is a material recovery facility for recycling, and our surplus store, which is amazing. Those are some really great things. How do we expand on those? How do we continue to do more with those? Those are some great resources. And then long-term looking at opportunities to partner with other companies to implement new technologies here on campus to leverage the research that we're doing at our campus and really to try to put those in place. Really trying to look at it holistically. And not only that, to really embed sustainability into the culture, to literally lean into that ‘Go Green' and really make it part of our culture so that it's just who we are as a university.”As you pursue some of these goals, what are some challenges and opportunities?“With any large organization, the challenge is always breaking down the silos. I don't care what organization you are, there are going to be silos. And there are going to be opportunities for collaboration. The opportunities are tremendous given our history, where we're located, all our work around agriculture, the land that we have around us, and our communities and satellite campuses in Detroit and Grand Rapids and Flint. And we'll leverage our Extension programs to really spread that. It's a matter of coordinating and then setting a vision and helping to get us there.”How do you define sustainability?“The traditional definition of sustainability is meeting today's needs without sacrificing the needs of future generations. But I really look at sustainability holistically. Climate change is the most existential threat that we face, and that is a big thing. But sustainability is more than that. It's about really creating healthy environments, both internal and external.“There are going to be a lot of demands on the state of Michigan, especially as climate continues to change and people flock to the state as the respite for a lot of the climate challenges that we have. Sustainability is really that triple bottom line approach of people, planet, and prosperity. If it doesn't save money and it doesn't make financial sense, it's not going to be sustainable.“I'm open to new ideas and new ways to do things. Two things that I hate to hear are, ‘We've always done it that way.' I don't want to hear that unless you're coming at it and saying, ‘But we can do it differently.' And two, I don't like to use the word can't because we can do anything we put our minds to. It's just a matter of resources and having the will to be able to do that, and we know Spartans Will.”Listen to “MSU Today with Russ White” on the radio and through Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and wherever you get your shows.

Homeschooling in Michigan? Or wanting to homeschool in Michigan? Find out how you can get a FREE literature-based curriculum with support and online assessments! Join Janna Koch, BookShark's Community Manager, as she is joined by Jen Myers and Gwyn Domke, from Michigan BookShark Virtual with Alpena Schools in Michigan. Find out the benefits of using Michigan BookShark Virtual with Alpena and get it for no cost to you! OUR GUESTS | Jen Myers LISTENER COUPON CODE ★Request your coupon code to use on any purchase at bookshark.com. Janna (00:10): My guests, Jen Myers, and Gwen Domke are from Michigan BookShark Virtual. Jen and Gwen are immersed in homeschooling both personally and professionally. Not only have they homeschooled their own children now facilitate homeschooling for numerous families across the state of Michigan. Their program has equipped parents to homeschool confidently and successfully. Gwyn (02:16): So my side of things is coming alongside Jen when we started the program and looking at Michigan BookShark Virtual, the opportunity is I homeschooled my kids for 16 years using the curriculum. So for me, it was just a natural fit to help families use this amazing curriculum because I know it works. Jen (05:29): And the third thing I'd like to mention that's unique about the virtual component of this curriculum is the online graders. So with a traditional online program, your online grader might be somewhere in a different state and not have a pulse on your expectations or your autonomy as a parent with this online curriculum. Whereas our online graders work personally with our program so they understand the nuances of this curriculum and they understand our families. Gwyn (11:20): Another benefit of BookShark is it is a four-day curriculum. So families absolutely love the fact that it's four days of focus and then they have one day left in the week for enrichment or other purposes for their families. That offers so much more flexibility. (21:08): All right, ladies, you have me sold on this program. If I were to live in Michigan and I was contemplating that I wanted to homeschool and know that this is the right choice for me, what would be my next practical steps as a parent interested in Michigan BookShark Virtual? Gwyn (21:27): So you would reach out to me through my email, which I think you will have included at the end of this podcast. Tell me you're interested. I will contact you and discuss how you will enroll with our district for the year using this free virtual online component. We will ship a box of curriculum to you directly and come alongside you and help you set up your year. Thanks to show sponsor BookShark. Request a homeschool curriculum catalog or download samples at bookshark.com. If you'd like to share an aha moment, an inspirational quote, a homeschool hack, a book you're loving, or a suggested podcast topic/guest, leave a comment at bookshark.com/podcast. We'd love to feature your reflection on a future episode.

On today's latest episode of MiCannaCast with our hosts Cannadave & Groovee. We review a legacy company from the caregiver day here in Michigan called Alpha Buddz. We have discussed Alpha Buddz in the past from the medical market and times when we saw their product at the High Times Cup. We also get into cannabis news in the United States and what's going on in Germany.Cake Pop Strain ReviewWe Review Cake Pop by Alpha Buddz which is a cross of Wedding Cake x Gelato 41. We picked this up at the reef and it was on the top shelf for $50. The smell on this product just popped with Gelato like the old school Gelato smell that was so pungent. Did we enjoy the smoke, and how was the high are all talked about in the review?Cannabis NewsSouth Dakota house didn't pass the legislation by the senate for the legalization of cannabis in the state. It's another setback for the state because the voters approved the measure for legalization in 2020. We will see what happens in the future.Michigan has two cities Alpena and Saline one will be opening up the first shop in the city and the other is looking into licensing to have the business be in the city. Those are huge wins because the more cities opt-in and have more licenses more access will be available for everyone. Germany is looking into cannabis. If Germany goes legal that will be a huge change for Europe. Germany is one of the biggest industries in Europe and that could be a domino effect for legal cannabis.MCMA vs MicrobusinessesThe MCMA is trying to go at the MRA and microbusiness licenses. Why because the MRA has suggested that microbusinesses be able to increase their plant count from 150 to 300. Which is a jump but well worth it for these smaller batch companies. We want to be able to have all companies compete in the market. MCMA doesn't want this to happen because they've spent millions of dollars in the market and have all the type c licenses which are you can grow 1000 plants and stack those licenses. It's hilarious the MCMA doesn't want change here but they won't change from the medical program that has been in place since 2008. It's all over their greed they want more money and nobody else to prosper in the Michigan Business. This opportunity for microbusiness is huge because they would be able to double the plant count, have more flowers, more concentrates to compete with everyone. If you are looking for a great micro business check out Winewood Organics in Ann Arbor Michigan. Mention MiCannaCast and save up to 35% on your first-time order at the store. We hate the MCMA and what they are doing to the industry F*CK MCMA.Remember to catch us live every Saturday at 9 am EST and Every Tuesday at 7:10 EST.
