In episode 160 of the Man of Screen Podcast Mike Zummo will conclude his coverage of the Ruby Spears Superman series with only one half hour of television. And since there’s only one episode, Mike has decided to bring a guest along. Enter: Patrick Delmore of The Next Generation’s First Generation podcast. First, they’ll talk Patrick’s Introduction to the show and then we’ll have a space mission. And we’ll have an alien bounty hunter named Starock, and we’re going to have all kind of space adventures. We’re going to see Superman befriend a young kid busybody on this alien planet. We’re going to see the DC Universe version of a Star Wars cantina and we’re going to have an astronaut hit on Lois. We need to be careful or it might be “The Last Time I Saw Earth”. And then we’re going to finish off this coverage with the first time Superman appeared in Metropolis, Clark Kent getting a job at the Daily Planet and everything you would expect from a Superman origin story in about 4 minutes. “It’s Superman”. Next time: The show shifts entirely toward the Salkind-produced Superboy show full time with “The Invisible People” and “Kryptonite Kills”.Feedback for this show can be sent to: manofscreen@gmail.com Check out the homepage for the show. First, were going to get an episode written by some comics pros. Yes, Mike Carlin and Andy Helfer of DC Comics fame are going to give us a battle between Superboy and a warrior from an alien world. What does the being want? Why is it wearing a body that reminds the viewer of a samurai? This gives us the first enemy that attacks Superboy through Lana Lang. How does he respond? Is there a crisis of conscience? How is Superboy going to get out of this? What is “The Alien Solution”? And then after outer space came to us, then were going to go home. And were going to find Smallville in crisis. And amidst this crisis, were going to meet Ma and Pa Kent. Were going to have some pie. And maybe some chicken. So come for the food and stay for the mystery girlfriend from Clarks past or present? Who knows? You want to see some poorly choreographed fighting? This episodes got you covered. First, Perry and his wife disappear on a cruise ship. So that follows an adventure on the high seas and into the Bermuda Triangle. There will be crazy cabbies, Clark on a moped, and some very bad fashion sense. And there’s the villain, who is stealing ships and he has a certain motif, one you would expect from someone calling himself “Wildsharkk.” And then we go to Smallville, Clark is joining the football team. And his parents allow it. Then Clark goes to practice and then perhaps there’s a question. “To Play Or Not To Play”. That is the question. Now, Lex Luthor is looking for a thrill. For a good time, call McFarland. He’s going to build a suit that you designed. If you’re a bored billionaire, you can do several things. You can run for president or you can rob a bank. Or, you can enjoy “The Night of the Living Shadows”. Then it’s time for another milestone. One of the final milestones and final comedy of errors. Come for the ceremony and stay for the idiocy as we attend “The Graduation”. Its the episode that probably should have led off the series. But it didnt. Why didnt it? Who knows. Just bring your abacus so we can have a “Countdown to Nowhere”. Next, were going to have a rocking good time as a Rockstar Judd Faust comes to Shuster University, but theres also a plot that involves someone trying to destroy the local amusement park because the owner wont sell. In episode 149 of the man of Screen Podcast, Mike Zummo begins a new era of the show. With the new year, coverage goes into 1988 and so begins coverage of two knew shows that need coverage. The short-lived and highly underrated Ruby Spears Superman show and that will be staggered with the first season of “The Adventures of Superboy.” But first, the animated show. Coverage will begin with the first onscreen appearance of businessman Lex Luthor as he tries to make Superman redundant in “Destroy the Defendroids.” Then, in the backup feature, the “Kent Family Album”, we will see how little Clark came to live with the Kents in “The Adoption.” Then we’ll close out the show with some aliens that are woken up from a deep sleep. One is evil and the other is not. How can we tell? Who is hiding the eggs? Doesn’t that only happen on Easter? Who is the “Fugitive from Space”? And then Martha Kent and Clark are going to do something mundane but since Clark is with her, then it isn’t going to be as mundane as it should. Find out what happens when Clark and his mom go to “The Supermarket”. Next time: Two more episodes of Ruby Spears Superman: By the Skin of the Dragons’ Teeth and Cybron Strikes” and the Kent Family Album stories, “At the Babysitter’s” and “The First Day of School.”Feedback for this show can be sent to: manofscreen@gmail.com Check out the homepage for the show.
