As the first engineer at a pioneering startup specializing in artificial intelligence, John Guiver's expertise in mathematics and programming laid the groundwork for his technical career. While still working in this field, John began translating the memoirs of survivors of the 1972 Andes flight disaster, which led to the publication of his own book on the subject, entitled To Play the Game. Writing not only gave John a new creative outlet, but also a profound connection to the stories of resilience and survival that emerged from that tragedy.John's early career as an engineer and mathematician set the stage for a unique perspective on creativity, one that blends analytical thinking with artistic expression. He recounts how his work in AI during its formative years required not only technical expertise but also a creative mindset to tackle complex problems and innovate within the field.Visiting the site of the disaster, and translating the memoirs of crash survivors, not only connected him to a profound human experience but also instilled in him the confidence to pursue writing in a more personal and expressive way. While researching the crash, John discovered a rich tapestry of interconnected lives and shared histories. This theme of community serves as a backdrop for his writing, as he seeks to honour the memories of those who perished while also celebrating the resilience of survivors. In this episode John also discusses the challenges of finding his voice as a writer and emphasizes the importance of perseverance in the writing process, sharing practical insights into his daily writing habits and how his experiences enriched both his book and his life. He encourages listeners to boldly pursue their passions, underscoring the importance of storytelling and connection in the creative journey. Buy Me a CoffeeCreativityFound.co.ukInstagram: @creativityfoundpodcastThreads: @creativityfoundpodcastFacebook: @creativityfoundpodcast and Creativity Found groupYouTube @creativityfoundpodcastResearched, edited and produced by Claire Waite BrownMusic: Day Trips by Ketsa Undercover / Ketsa Creative Commons License Free Music Archive - Ketsa - Day TripsArtworks: Emily Portnoi emilyportnoi.co.ukPhoto: Ella PalletBook your Podcast Startup Sanity Check here.  John Guiver is an author who turned to writing after a career in the world of artificial intelligence and hi-tech software who has spent many years researching the 1972 Andes flight disaster, first as a hobby and then as a full-time passion. His research eventually led to the publication of his book titled “To Play the Game,” which was published in December 2022, the 50th anniversary of the return of 16 survivors after being lost in the mountains for 72 days. John also appeared as a guest expert on the May 2023 ABC 20/20 documentary called “Prisoners of the Snow.” John shares the details of the tragedy with a heart of compassion and empathy for the victims, the survivors, the families, and the community. His description of the event is not only based on his extensive research, but also from his personal experience of doing the trek to the crash site twice, and meeting several of the survivors and their families 50 years after the tragedy. He also explains how his experience researching and writing the book, along with the friendships that came from the experience gave him an even deeper connection for all of the individuals involved. Of the many insights and life lessons John gleaned from this event, the most powerful is simply for all of us to open our eyes to the human side of every tragedy. Download this incredible episode to hear the story of the tragedy of the 1972 Andes flight disaster, not from the perspective of sensationalism and judgement, but from the perspective of the human side of the story. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is John Guiver, author of the book To Play the Game. John's  lifetime interest in the 1972 Andes Flight Disaster led him to travel to the site of the accident in January 2013 in the company of one of the sixteen survivors, Eduardo Strauch. Through him, John met many others connected to the story, including survivors Pedro Algorta and Coche Inciarte, whose memoirs he translated. Over the years, he has conducted numerous interviews within the close-knit passenger community, and has delved deeply into various archives, including that of Piers Paul Read who wrote the best-selling 1974 account of the tragedy, Alive. The detailed information he amassed persuaded him to write a comprehensive history of this iconic event. More recently, he was a guest expert on the May 2023 ABC 20/20 documentary "Prisoners of the Snow", a production for which his book was a major source. In my book review, I stated To Play the Game is the story of Flight 571. You may remember hearing about the plane that went down full of rugby players. The plane crashed, and it took ten weeks before they were found. A famous book, Alive, talks in detail about those ten weeks, but John's story does even more. First, he doesn't focus only on the survivors. Instead, he also tells the story of every person on the plane, so we understand why they were on the plane and what their life was like before the crash. Additionally, John spends a lot of time setting up the world view of the passengers, including their hometowns, occupations, education, and even love lives. Finally, John looks at the many possible causes of the accident. Each of these pieces makes this book a very comprehensive look at Flight 571 and all who were affected by the tragedy. We're going to take a little side road along our musical journey for this episode. It's not something I often do, especially in my youth, but I'm going to make a big deal out of my birthday this year, since it actually falls on a day I publish my episodes. 62 is not a milestone. There is no special celebration with my high school classmates, since next year we'll be celebrating at our 45-year reunion. In fact, I better get busy and call a meeting since I am currently the chair of the reunion committee. In that vein, I am going to pull out an album filled with plenty of songs you've already heard on this show, but they all appear on this one disk. I keep circling back to Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass. Back to the music that made my household so much fun to grow up in. Back to an album that was permanently in the To Play pile next to the living room record player. So, get ready to hear the entire album of music that always went along well with my mom's lasagna, a house full of friends, and bocce ball in the backyard and help me celebrate with some favorite memories in Volume 186: Best of TJB (Happy Birthday to Me). I'm pulling your leg!Head over to the interview with Sarah. 133 Reading in Italian until fluent - Sarah IfeomaDifferent meanings of "To Pull Someone's Leg":To Tease or Joke Playfully:Example: "I was just pulling your leg when I said the boss was looking for you."To Deceive or Mislead in a Light-Hearted Manner:Example: "Don't believe him; he's just pulling your leg about the surprise party."To Engage in Friendly Banter or Prank:Example: "John loves pulling his sister's leg by pretending to be a ghost in the dark."To Play a Light-Hearted Trick or Practical Joke:Example: "The kids pulled their teacher's leg by hiding all the chalk before class."Alternative Phrases:To Jest with Someone:Example: "I was jesting with you; there's no need to take it seriously."To Tease Gently:Example: "She was just teasing, don't let it bother you."To Engage in Light Banter:Example: "We were just engaging in some light banter; no harm meant."Etymology Stories:The origin of "to pull someone's leg" is a bit unclear, but several theories exist:Theatrical Origin:One theory suggests it originated in the theatrical world. In early theater, actors would literally trip or pull each other's legs to create comedic effects. Over time, this physical action evolved into a metaphor for playing a joke.Pickpocketing Connection:Another theory links it to pickpocketing. Some say that thieves would trip their targets to distract them while stealing from their pockets, giving rise to the expression.Old English Slang:There's also a belief that it's rooted in Old English slang where "pull" meant to trick or deceive. "Pulling someone's leg" could have been a figurative expression evolving from this linguistic background.Nautical Origins:A less common theory ties it to nautical slang, where "leg" referred to a rope. Pulling someone's leg might have been akin to figuratively pulling a person with a rope, suggesting trickery.

Oo-De-Lally! Dr Amy Louise Morgan (she/her, Surrey University) tells me tales of feminist dragons, gender-nonconforming foxes, wild princesses and all kinds of other queer characters from Disney's medieval(ish) films. We compare favourite VHS tapes, most fantastic princesses, and try to figure out whether we (or was it just me?) wanted to be, or be with, Robin Hood. Amy also tells me all about Disney's problematic relationship to queerness, why queer fans still relate to it so much, and what positive changes are possibly in store. Golly, what an episode! If this episode awoke the medieval fanperson in you, follow @AmyLouise921 and @queerlitpodcast on Twitter. @queerlitpodcast is also on Insta. First things first, what is your favourite Disney film and why?2. What do you think is the most problematic Disney film and why?3. We speak quite a bit about anthropomorphised characters. Why do these offer themselves for a queer reading?4. How does queerness relate to monstrosity and fairies? Can you think of other monsters that are frequently read as queer?5. An Argentine woman translates "A Midsummer Night's Dream" while incessantly taping travel postcards to a wall. An actress in Buenos Aires seduces her colleague while rehearsing a scene for "Twelfth Night." A theater troupe flirts its way through rehearsals of "As You Like It" in an Argentine forest. If you're noticing a pattern here, you're not mistaken. These scenes all come from the films of Argentine filmmaker Matías Piñeiro. Born in Buenos Aires and now living in New York, Piñeiro has developed a cycle of six beautifully-filmed movies he calls “The Shakespeare Reads,” all of which are based around the female roles in Shakespeare's comedies. Piñeiro talks with Barbara Bogaev about his unique approach to his work and his craft. Matías Piñeiro is a screenwriter, director, and filmmaker. The six films in his “The Shakespeare Reads” series are "Rosalinda," "Viola," "The Princess of France," "Hermia & Helena," "Isabella," and the short film "Sycorax." Stream all of these films on MUBI, or buy them on Blu-ray and DVD from the Cinema Guild. Piñeiro teaches filmmaking at Brooklyn's Pratt Institute and coordinates the filmmaking department at the Elías Querejeta Film School in San Sebastián, Spain. From the Shakespeare Unlimited podcast. Wondering why we don't have any pretend jails in this episode (or our house)? Check out and donate to the non-profit The Sentencing Project. Black Americans are incarcerated in state prisons across the country at nearly five times the rate of whites, and Latinx people are 1.3 times as likely to be incarcerated than non-Latinx whites. We highly discourage play that involves police, jails, and prisons and encourage age-appropriate discourse with young children around those topics instead. If you are parent or educator who is worried about bad guy and superhero play, check out this episode for parents: "Pretend gun Play and Actual Bad Guys with Jane Lindholm." Join John and Matty as we discuss a question sent in by an avid listener! So you were training jiu jitsu and you accidentally got choked out... You also know that tapping is a much more favourable option. You know that you should have tapped out earlier, and for this reason you may be a little upset, worried, or embarassed at what happened. As a devout learner, and a good student you will take this experience and you’ll learn from it, in order to do things better the next time this situation eventuates. The Milk is On the Table. Or, there's no use crying over spilt milk. Spilt milk comes in the form of many things, but it's important to remember that shit happens, and for you it happened on a few fronts, albeit hopefully not literally. Sure you slept, which was unintentional, yet it happened. The more important milk that had been spilt, was the choke that made you sleep. There is a time and a place to escape submissions, but that wasn't one of them. It was clearly deep enough to make you sleep, and in the ensuing battle of escape vs tapping, you held onto the hope of escape for too long, which is why it happened. To Play is to Tap Often and Always. You can do this because you're there to play, not fight. Just as your training partner isn't your opponent, so too you're not in a battle to the death. You're allowed to tap, and there's no shame in yielding to the good work of others. Defence First. And with this being said, you can play, and still not get caught. The secret is in your defences. In jiu jitsu, you need to stay safe, which is why you need good defence. Just like you clear your gutters of leaves to prevent fires, you can't wait till the submission is almost on before you think about defending it! The truth is it's your neck, and your joints, and it's up to you to keep them safe way before any danger can eventuate. Posture. Defence. Always. Joys of Jiu Jitsu The beauty of this martial art is that it takes many years to learn well, and it is inevitable that you will fail along the way. On your path to black belt, you will tap hundreds if not thousands of times. These taps can either be many failures, and/or many opportunities to learn. It's the opportunist, and the future black belt who will take what happens, think about it objectively, and learn from it so that it doesn't happen again. Just like that the ups and downs and lessons and learnings of jiu jitsu are a portal into everyday life. Not everything will go your way. Sometimes there's nothing to do but accept this, move on, and try again, no matter what. So never mind getting choked. Enjoy jiu jitsu, stay on the mats, and learn for life. Remember that old Sprite Soda ad where the slogan is “Image is NOT Everything”?  This session flies in the face of that logic. It is a reality of public speaking or any sort of public presentation or exhibition: “To Play the Part, You Must Look The Part”.  The way you carry yourself begins with your appearance; it can be fickle but this is no different than any other type of performing arts.  Bottom line is, for this Session, this is NOT a fashion advice episode!! Not even close. But there is a strategy to play a role and look the part. Not unlike film or stage actors; when you are cast in the role of Master of Ceremonies, what separates you from the "pretenders" is how you "own" each role. This, for many, is the make-or-break factor for whether or not they get re-hired by that group or committee. You have to care. But first you have to know how to play this to win this. You will win with this PodCast Session #10 of MC with MEi! My credentials? Look me up at www.masterofceremonies.ca and play the videos, browse the photos and watch my short animated video intros for each of the sessions in this series; they are fun and easy to follow. This way you know which sessions are right for you without having to listen to them all if you do not need to.  Click on photos for the stories behind the situations captured. I am always available for hire as a Master of ceremonies for your events, key note on the "Science Behind The Podium", and if you would prefer a more one-on-one or one-on-group approach to this course, I can accommodate most requests for that as well. Just send me a note on my "Contact MEi" link.  Like and follow me on Twitter @MCwithMEi and send notes to me that way either in a conversation or as a direct message.  And don’t forget to Subscribe to MCwithMEi so you have every PodCourse session as well as all the other releases from “MC with MEi”.  This way you can follow along or download anything you want and not take up any data on your wireless device.

In today’s show we discuss how GRATITUDE helps just about anything in your life even your GOLF! Today is a solo show with Karl looking at a very relevant and important concept. The Art of Gratitude. We are becoming more and more future orientated. We are here but we want to be there. That is fine to a degree. I firmly believe in setting a clear direction of where you want to go with your game and your life. Just like a golf shot to be really clear on what you INTEND to DO. HOWEVER Sometimes in the quest for a better future we can become so focused on what we want that we really miss what we HAVE. To be GRATEFUL is to connect with the present moment. To really make a conscious decision to be AWARE of the opportunities we have right here and now. The science is very strong gratitude is VERY good for us. We get to feel good right now. The PARADOX though is that by being grateful NOW we actually create the very conditions and state of mind that best ALLOWS for your future goals to fall in to place. We discuss this fundamental paradox To PLAY good by feeling GOOD. We decide to go first. Instead of waiting for a good outcome we decide to feel good NOW It is a wide ranging session that ties together what a lot of our recent guests have been saying. Many of the concepts of gratitude tie in perfectly with ‘The Lost Art of Putting’ Have you got yourself a copy yet? BACKLOG EPISODE!This episode is an early work and is only recommended if you love the game - or, slightly less likely, love hearing us. :) This episode, our first as Emotive Pixels, shows us we have much to learn and much ahead of us. We gathered around the table today to discuss the 2001 Square classic Final Fantasy X, the 'tenth' Final Fantasy game released, the story of Yuna and her quest to take on Sin with the help of blond whiny/lovable Tidus (nominated as Nate's favorite female character). The crew on this first episode is Will, Brian, Alberto, Nate, Geoff, and Sy. We begin with the Eternal Calm, its awkwardness, and how it ties FFX and FFX-2 - which we subsequently discuss in our "To Play or Not To Play?" section - and the accompanying realization that this universe has two separate ‘dream worlds’. And inevitably given the timeframe (early 2014), we compare it to FFXIII, that lovable mess. Critical to scoring the platinum in this game is the totally-not-a-cheat Don Tonberry exploit, which Will regales and dazzles us with, and its path towards easy sphere hoarding. We discuss how the internet has changed playing this game from when many of us first laid hands on it in 2001: remember the serendipity of discovering game mechanics for yourself; of thinking of exploits rather than seeing 'em on Polygon or Twitch first? Also, what level of foot-in-mouth disease does Tidus have; is it over 9,000? "I'm tired of all these mother****ing Seymores on this mother****ing Plain!" Alberto attempts to tell us about chocobos avoiding lightning 200x, and, somehow even more preposterously, about how Blitzball isn't the worst minigame of, well, ever.
