When you've reached the end, you can't help but want to look back and that's just what Liam & Cal do this week as they take a second gander on the pod at the Batman Beyond season one episode "Golem." The hosts look back at their original scores and decide with the benefit of hindsight and nearly 8 years of reviews if they were too harsh or too lenient on the episode featuring the alliterative Willie Watt and his giant robot friend. The hosts discuss the dynamics lifted from classic 80s teen classics and horror films, the unique musical pieces from Shirley Walker, why this episode changed the direction for the Beyond writers going forward and a little sneaky easter egg that may just explain the Golem's design. Plus the hosts talk another entry into the "Worst Dads of the DCAU" and much more on this week's all new DCAU Re-Review!Please Consider Supporting the Podcast:Become a monthly or one time supporter of the pod at https://buymeacoffee.com/DCAUReviewSubscribe to the pod on Spotify or Apple Podcasts and please consider leaving us a 5-star reviewSubscribe to our new YouTube Channel Support the pod by picking up some merch at our shop https://dcaureview.myspreadshop.comFollow us: Twitter/X @DCAUReview Instagram @DCAUReview

It's back to the future for the next several weeks as the Good brothers make their return to the DCAU with the penultimate episode of Batman Beyond which features a crossover from The Zeta Project in the episode "Countdown." When Zeta shows up to Gotham, hijinks ensue as the Mad Stan straps a bomb to an oblivious Zeta. The hosts discuss how this plot mirrors an earlier episode of Batman Beyond, expectations for the episode being set higher due to those given the writing credit and it being the original intended series finale and just what tone this episode could have taken to be a more enjoyable episode. The hosts also discuss animation that while fine suffers from a lack of action, music by the late, great Shirley Walker and a voice cast of both series' regulars. Show Notes Provided by Joe Peluso:  "Vengeance blackens the soul, Bruce." Alfred Pennyworth from "Batman: Mask of the Phantasm" Warner Bros, 1993.    Vengeance?  Is that the motivation that drives The Batman? Is he a "creature of the night" longing to satiate his troubled conscience with the blood and broken bones of his villainous prey? Or is he just a man seeking to quiet those inner demons with the one thing all humans desire--happiness?      Join your hosts James, Chris, Joe, and returning friend and guest Josh Murray, for a deep dive into the complex world of The Dark Knight as presented in the feature-length animated film--"Batman: Mask of the Phantasm:    Why does young Bruce Wayne choose the path of vigilantism? How does the woman from his past, Andrea Beaumont, inform his decisions? How does the man who raised orphaned Bruce reconcile his young charge's chosen path of obsession, violence, and personal loss? Who is the mysterious Phantasm?   And where does The Batman's arch nemesis --The Joker--fit into this story of self-sacrifice and lost love?   If this was a Silver Age Marvel comic, the blurb on the cover would read: "We dare you to find out!"  But this is a carefully crafted film with as much nuance as there is action to keep you engaged and entertained. Don't be fooled by the lavish animation into thinking this is just kiddie fare. From the opening moments of Shirley Walker's soulful musical score to the unexpected climax, you will experience a Batman film quite unlike any other offering you have ever seen.      Dust off that old DVD case, and pop this one in. You won't regret it.

After another multiversal adventure last week, the Good Brothers return to the DCAU with a month of Batman: The Animated Series reviews for the month of July and it's only fitting the month kicks off with a bang as they review the all-time classic "Harlequinade." Hear the hosts discuss a plot that borrows heavily from Merrie Melodies shorts and the oddball comedy 48 Hours with light being shed on Harley's not yet established backstory and a DCAU musical number precedent being set. The hosts talk plenty about Paul Dini's brilliant comedy and Arleen Sorkin's role in bring "Say That We're Sweethearts Again" to the episode. Additionally, Cal & Liam talk Shirley Walker's score which shied away from traditional BTAS themes and leaned heavily onto the source material in only the way that Ms. Walker could. In addition to this discussion the hosts discuss the trio of animation studios especially the impressive visuals done by TMS on the black hole. Be A Clown    Mayor Hamilton Hill's miserable son, Jordan, becomes even sadder when his father uses his birthday party as a political gathering rather than a normal celebration, and ends up stowing away in the truck of the party clown hired by Hill for the party, whom he doesn't know is actually the Joker in disguise. It is now up to Batman, whom Mayor Hill distrusts, to rescue the boy before it is too late. Two Face Part 1   Mobster Rupert Thorne attempts to use Harvey Dent's secret split personality to blackmail him. But when Dent meets with Thorne at a chemical plant, "Big Bad Harv" takes over, and the resulting confrontation leads to an explosion that horribly scars half of Dent's face and his entire body. Two Face Part 2   Harvey Dent, now calling himself Two-Face, resurfaces and starts robbing Rupert Thorne's illegal businesses, preparing for a final confrontation with the crime boss, and Batman must stop his former friend before he and Thorne kill each other. It's Never Too Late   A mob war between crime bosses Rupert Thorne and Arnold Stromwell is nearing its end, and comes to a climax when Stromwell is set up to be killed in an exploding restaurant by Thorne. Batman saves him at the last moment, and aided by Stromwell's brother (now a priest who lost his leg years before, an accident for which Stromwell carries a secret guilt), tries to persuade him to give up his life of crime and help the police bring Thorne down by testifying against him. It's a very exciting month at the DCAU Review as the Good Brothers celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Batman: The Animated Series debuting on TV. Kicking things off for the month the hosts are reviewing an episode that's often in the discussion amongst fans as one of the series' very best with the episode "Read My Lips." Cal & Liam discuss one of the late great Shirley Walker's most memorable soundtracks for an episode with a jazzy heist theme that pairs with a Hitchcock-ian thriller tune, along with some wacky visual gags involving mannequins, formidably-sized lackeys, Scarface's dismemberment and a tower of platinum bars crushing Batman. Plus the hosts discuss a voice cast and how the Ventriloquist and Scarface's voice actor managed to pull of differentiating his vocal performance as a multiple personality disorder. Additionally there's talk about who constructs the villains' death traps and why it makes sense that Batman is a trained ventriloquist and so much more on this week's DCAU Review! 395. Is Batman: Mask of the Phantasm the best Batman film? with Amon Warmann

Empire Film Magazine and Fade to Black's Amon Warmann joins me to try and answer one of the great nerd questions of all time: Is a 75 minute animated film from 1993 actually the best Batman film ever made? Warning: This is a spoiler-filled conversation after the first ten minutes. Amon and I go for broke digging into a film we both love dearly covering topics including: - Best Batman film vs best film starring Batman - The love story that drives the film - How the film and its parent show Batman: The Animated Series took key inspiration from classic Hollywood films of the 30s, 40s and 50s. - Why this 'kids' film is one of the most emotionally mature superhero films ever made. - How the film finds a unique way to tell Batman's origin story - Kevin Conroy's definitive and multi-pronged take on Batman - The strategic use of the Joker and how it parallels The Silence of the Lambs and Sexy Beast. - How to go dark without slipping into pretension or self-parody. - Vengance vs Justice. - Shirley Walker's incredible classic score. Plus we game out an alternate history of the 90s where Warner Brothers looked to this film for inspiration after parting ways with Tim Burton instead of making Batman Forever, and speculate on appropriate candidates to take over from Michael Keaton. Plus we have a spirited argument about whether a film should ever be three hours long.

linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema This May is “Masterclass Revisited” month at Catching Up On Cinema! All month long, we'll be revisiting the subjects of Masterclass months we've done over the years to review films that may have slipped through the cracks. First up this month is another tour of Gotham City, as we sit down to review Bruce Timm and Eric Radomski's, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (1993)! Based on the groundbreaking Batman: The Animated Series cartoon, the film is the first feature length animated film in the long history of the character. Initially planned as a direct-to-video project that was later fast tracked and released on Christmas day in 1993, the film would ultimately be critically adored, but sadly a total bomb at the box office. Completed and released within a ludicrous 8 month production cycle, the film is fairly pedestrian in terms of cinematography and fluidity of animation, however most will agree it's “dark deco” aesthetic and glorious score by composer Shirley Walker more than make up for whatever technical shortcomings it may have. Boasting the same voice cast as the animated series, including the one-two punch of the inimitable Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill as Bats and Joker respectively, the film is a mature and focused affair, exploring aspects of the characters that would not be revisited in earnest for over a decade. Fresh off of their 200th review, the Good Brothers are back with another fantastic Special Correspondent as artist Jordan Gibson from Batman The Adventures Continue joins the podcast for a discussion of the Batman: The Animated Series episode "His Silicon Soul." Before the full episode break down, hear Jordan's introduction to the Batman character, his inspiration for his artistic stylings, and his dream DCAU series project. From there hear thoughts on the sequel to "Heart of Steel" which earned a perfect score from Cal and see how this child's dream of two Batmen fighting translates to an adult viewing. Plus a discussion on the horror movie threads built into the plot, homages in visuals to Terminator and Indiana Jones, Batman getting to show his compassionate side to Carl Rossum, Alfred showing evidence that he doesn't truly understand robots and Exhibit Z for why Kevin Conroy is a phenomenal voice actor. Additionally there's discussion on the HARDAC theme being married with the Batman theme to create a tragic and haunting score for the episode that also features elements of the Twilight Zone and somber versions of Shirley Walker's theme to match the episode's tone.
