The CELEBRATING SUPERMAN series continues with Eisner award winner MIKE CARLIN, the legendary group editor of Superman comics through the late 80s and 90s. During his beloved Superman tenure, Mike helped lead an all-star team of writers and artists, including the likes of John Byrne, Dan Jurgens, Roger Stern, Jerry Ordway, Louise Simonson, Jon Bogdanove, AND MORE. He oversaw such game-changing stories as THE DEATH/RETURN OF SUPERMAN story arc and spearheaded a number of creative decisions that have shaped the character and had major influence on not just the comics themselves but adaptations such as the 1990s Lois & Clark television series and even James Gunn's new film.In their conversation, Shawn and Mike discuss how Mike got into comics, what eventually brought him over to DC, why he and the Superman creative team decided to kill Superman, and an angry phone call from Harlan Ellison once the news of Superman's death hit the mainstream.Episode art illustrated by Jon Bogdanove and Dennis Janke, kindly provided by Mr. Carlin.

Host Anthony Desiato brings his 32-year fan journey full-circle by interviewing two of the architects of the famed Triangle Era: longtime Superman group editor MIKE CARLIN and veteran comics creator DAN JURGENS, who wrote and drew SUPERMAN #75 — aka the finale to THE DEATH OF SUPERMAN.In the first half of the double feature, Anthony speaks with Mike Carlin about the recently released Triangle Era omnibus; the origin, evolution, and eventual end of that period in Superman comics; and running the famous Super Summits to chart out each year's stories. Then, Anthony welcomes Dan Jurgens to discuss Doomsday's inspiration, origin, and adaptations; other Triangle Era highlights, including underrated villain Conduit; and what he hopes fans like Anthony take away from the Death & Return of Superman. It's a 175th episode not to be missed! This week, Jared and Teladia outline why Death in comics has become a meaningless marketing tactic that is slowly losing its effectiveness. They use the Death of Superman and Death of the Justice League as examples of when comics used death as a marketing tactic. "The Death of Superman" is a crossover story event mostly featured in DC Comics' Superman-related publications. The crossover, which originated from editor Mike Carlin and writers Dan Jurgens, Roger Stern, Louise Simonson, Jerry Ordway, and Karl Kesel, began in December 1992 and lasted until October 1993. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is a 2024 action-adventure shooter game developed by Rocksteady Studios and published by Warner Bros. Games. Based on the DC Comics team Suicide Squad, it is a spin-off of the Batman: Arkham series, and a follow-up to Batman: Arkham Knight. Discussed in this episode 1. The origin of the death and rebirth trope 2. How the death of Superman broke death in comics 3. Why Suicide Squad Kill The Justice League failed as a marketing tactic 4. From Crisis to Crisis - The Married Years (A Superman and Lois Podcast)
Welcome to the two hundredth and sixty-sixth episode of From Crisis to Crisis: A Superman Podcast! This podcast has a simple premise; examine just about every Superman comic published between Man of Steel #1 in 1986 to Adventures of Superman #649 in 2006 in an informative and hopefully entertaining format. Final Night concludes! And the Sun Eater causes the sun to go nova, and everyone dies. End of show. Just kidding! The road to the end of Final Night begins with Mike and Jeff looking at Superman: The Man of Steel #62, which not only focuses on Superman helping the brave workers at the Metropolis power station get said station back on line after the roof collapses but also shows Professor Hamilton viewing the holograms of Jor-El trying to save the population of Krypton during the planet's final days. There's also a sub-plot of Perry and his family heading to the Daily Planet and putting out the next edition despite the power being out and the world potentially coming to an end. Then the boys look at Flash #119, Hitman #8, and Legion of Super-Heroes #86, because those issues seem to take place before the final issue of the main series. Then the rubber meets the road in Final Night #4, where Superman makes the decision to fly the ship that's going to take the thingy to stop the Sun Eater. He doesn't get the chance when Ferro Lad kind of, sort of steals the ship but even his attempts at self-sacrifice fall through when Hal Jordan decides that he is going to be the one to save the day. Finally, the boys chat about the final three crossover issues, which come in the form of Robin #35, Takion #6, and Spectre #47. When the 1980s run of Marvel's Ka-Zar is canceled, our hero finds himself the king of the Land of Canceled Heroes! This multiverse is home to heroes who have had their comics canceled and believe it or not, we return to this earth again in issues of Silver Sable and the Wild Pack AND Deadpool. We discuss these visits, other meta comics, Mike Carlin's wedding proposal and more. Ep. 87 What if there was a Land of Canceled Comics / Heroes? Earth of a temporary designation 709 (Marvel Comics), as seen in Ka-Zar #34After previously covering Ka-Zar, Shanna and Zabu on episode 42 in an excellent What If, we return to the Savage Land to review the final issue in Ka-Zar's 1984 run involving aliens, adrenaline and a space zoo. But is this issue actual code for something bigger? As the issue closes, we seen in an epilogue that Ka-Zar is a comic book character and his cancelation brings him to the magical land of Canceled Comics! There he reigns over other (then) canceled titles/characters such as Nova, Spider-Woman, Man-Thing, Brother Voodoo, Howard the Duck, Deathlock and more. We actually return to this earth two more times, first in Silver Sable and the Wild Pack in 1995 where Silver Sable meets Luke Cage and a bevy of female heroes like She-Hulk and Ms. Marvel and again in 1999 with Deadpool when he ends up in a card game with Iron Fist, Moon Knight, DC Heroes and tons of Christopher Priest in jokes. All this plus a Marvel bullpen photo comic collage that doubles as a wedding proposal! Listen to our previous episodes discussing some other meta comics moments on our website. (We suggest Episodes 33, 45, 46, 51, and 72.)Reading List: Ka-Zar the Savage #34 (1984 Marvel Comics) Silver Sable and the Wild Pack #35 (1995 Marvel Comics) Deadpool #34 (1999 Marvel Comics) Plus Animal Man #25, Grimjack #27, and more!
