It's then all out aerial assault as the allies try to fend off the regime of the Nazi's new superior tech machines thanks to Savage and his time travel shenanigans! Green Lantern runs out of juice! This week, we review the 2017 DCEU blockbuster, "Wonder Woman." - How tall is Gal Gadot? Is she undersized for playing an Amazonian? Does she fill out the costume well enough? - How did the Geeks feel about the casting of Gal Gadot, beyond the physical? - What did the Geeks feel about the adaptation of Wonder Woman, her costume & equipment, other characters, and the island of Themyscira, from the comics? Which Geek missed the invisible jet? - Was there any logic in Hippolyta wanting Diana trained not at all or wanting her trained harder than anyone else, but not anything in between? - Was there any logic in the Amazons being a race of warriors but not willing to intervene in a war? Did the Amazons lose sight of their purpose? - Did the Geeks like the casting & performance of Chris Pine as Steve Trevor? - What were the Geeks' favorite moments & quotes from the movie? Which Geek said this movie contains the best moment in all the DCEU? Which line of dialogue almost gets one Geek choked up? - What did the Geeks think about the 3rd act, which is often criticized by people? Which Geek felt the 3rd act should have involved more hand-to-hand combat between Diana and an enemy, rather than the telekinesis, lasso work, and energy exchanges that we got instead? - Dave is usually the pickiest about villains. Were this movie's villains acceptable to him? Which Geek felt the villains were a little weak? Which Wonder Woman adversary from the comics did one Geek say he would have preferred seeing? - Which horror movie trilogy was randomly rolled for a future review? - Just how different is Andruw's voice between his first episode (over three years ago) and today? - And, which movie about the creator of the Wonder Woman character did three of the Geeks recommend? Listen now for the answers to these and wonder-ful questions, as we enter the trenches with..."Wonder Woman." We're approaching the end of season 3. Okay, let's wrap up our coverage of Dragon Con 2023! (Because come on, if this recap goes on much longer, we'll have to include Dragon Con 2024...) Kevin and the Mayor of Chickentown (reporting from Maine in the middle of a hurricane) are here to run through every crazy thing that happened over the last two days of the convention. Including: Bionic fun with Lindsay Wagner and Lee Majors, the Battle of the Mad Scientists, the Battle of the Fictional Bands, Christmas Con (with Robot Santa and horrifying holiday Spam), an ALF script reading (with Chris from Sci-Fi Explosion as ALF!), a Wonder Woman script reading (with Kevin as Steve Trevor, the Mayor as Etta Candy, and Joe in a gorilla suit!), panels on Stargirl and Titans with the American Sci-Fi and Fantasy Media Track, more hot Manimal talk with the American Sci-Fi Classics Track, and the upcoming Dragon Con-themed benefit book Dragon Tales! (Kevin wrote a chapter for this book. And it's quite silly, believe it or not.) Plus: Our favorite costumes, including a bizarre giant rubber chicken, a Weird Al group with tiny accordions, an eerily accurate Wilford Brimley, our friend Martha as Booster Gold, a million Mrs. Ropers, and a billion Barbies. We are officially exhausted. See you next year, nerds. The Flopcast website! The ESO Network! The Flopcast on Facebook! The Flopcast on Instagram! The Flopcast on Mastadon! This week, Jared and Tristen/Nerdette's Newstand discuss what content they want to see from the new DC. This includes comics, movies, shows, all other mediums of the DC multiverse. Jared also pitches a new series idea he has that involves Steve Trevor and other military characters from DC. It's always fun to talk DC with Tristen, particularly in this time of flux for DC, with constant leadership changes, creative reboots (for good or bad), and a divided fandom. What do you think? What DC content do you want to see in the near future from DC? What are the odds this new approach to DC succeeds? Nothing good comes from lies, and today's episode of Anime Was (Not) A Mistake is no exception. This month's Sinister Six misadventure concludes with Wonder Woman 1984. Diana Prince, aka Wonder Woman, is living in the neon-coated 1980s and fighting crime outside of the public eye. Working at a museum by day, Diana meets an archeologist named Barbara Minerva (who wears glasses, eww). A stupid special wishing stone comes into their possession, but it's quickly stolen by the charming conman Maxwell Lord. Diane's secret wish is granted and her fallen boyfriend Steve Trevor returns to life. Barbara's wish is also grant, allowing her to ditch her glasses and become really mean. Diana and Steve resolve to stop Maxwell Lord from plunging the world into chaos with his inconsistent wish-granting powers. But stopping Lord may require a bigger sacrifice than Diana is willing to make. And then Barbara becomes a cat. It's complicated. So if you're ready, hop on board the nearest invisible jet and join us for the latest installment of Anime Was (Not) A Mistake. COVID has caused havoc with the release schedule of a huge number of films. One of them was WONDER WOMAN 1984 (2020) which had been scheduled as a big summer blockbuster for 2020. After the COVID pandemic was determined not to be ending anytime soon, Warner Brothers/DC decided to release all their big budget films directly to HBO Max to help drive up the buzz for the new service. WONDER WOMAN 1984 was the first reaching that streaming service on Christmas day. When federal law enforcement break up a black market of antiquities, they ship the items to the Smithonian where Dr. Barbara Minerva (Kristen Wiig) is assigned to identify the artifacts. One of them, the so called “Dreamstone” that grants wishes to those in its possession, is suddenly desired by the megalomaniac oilman Maxwell Lord (Pedro Pascal) steals it only to be corrupted by its malevolent side effects. Gal Gadot once again reprises her role as Wonder Woman with a reappearance of Chris Pine as Steve Trevor. When Kristen Wiig was cast as the iconic Cheetah, some felt it was miscasting but Wiig proves otherwise in a career defining role. Your co-hosts take a look at the latest DC universe film and give their thoughts.
Will and Jes kick off the New Year with a discussion of Wonder Woman 1984, with special guest Jessica Marcrum. Topics include: How the development of the film's theme adversely affected the whole story. Max Lord and his defeat: in the comics vs. in the film. Would the movie have been more effective if it had been released a few years ago? Chris Pine's inclusion in the movie. "Body-snatching" Steve Trevor. Plotholes or not-holes? Revealing character in action sequences. "Steve is no punk." A toxic theme? What happened to the stone after Max Lord renounced his wish. The characters who did NOT renounce their wishes. The film's performances. Pedro Pascal's performance, and when "the mask slips." Gaps in the emotional realism of the movie. What made the film's climax less cathartic than it could have been. That post-credits scene. Our top DC comics films. Wonder Woman 1984: the good vs. the not-so-good What if the film had been set AFTER the events of Justice League? I know there's tons of theories of how Steve Trevor might be there alive and or a ghost. Mine isn't really a theory but what if they treated him being back like Diana in the first film. Diana was filled with this sense of wonder and amazement to the world and had Trevor there to guide her through and help her adjust to the world. What if they flipped it in 1984 where Trevor is the one that's shocked and amazed that he's this far in the future and he needs Diana's help.
