Prevention of Domestic violence and Cassi Carli Cassie Carli's disappearance has focused the attention on the issue of domestic violence, even though many details have not been released surrounding her death. On Sunday, Sheriff Bob Johnson was asked if Carli and her ex-boyfriend Marcus Spanevelo had any domestic violence history. He said he believed Carli had filed a domestic violence injunction. Court records reveal several domestic-related cases between Cassi Carli and Marcus Spanevelo two, that have been filed in at least two Northwest Florida counties. Reporters spoke to the Executive Director for Safe Connections, a non-profit that provides supervised visitation and safe exchanges for families who are dealing with abuse or domestic violence. "We need the victims out there to know that we're here and that they can reach out to us," Sharon Rogers said. "They can have their attorneys reach out to us." Rogers says they basically stand between a victimized parent and their victimizer to ensure custody exchanges are safe as they can be. "We will get them set up, talk to both parents, and figure out a time a day that they need to exchange," Rogers said. "We work with what the court has given them, what our hours are, what their limitations are, and we find the safest way to do their child exchange." She says hearing that Carli was last seen after doing a custody exchange of her 4-year-old daughter Saylor is heartbreaking. "We have all been just sick, absolutely sick about it," Rogers said. "Because this is what we do. It just sickens us." She tells Channel she wants to make sure that moving forward no other family has to go through what the Carli's are. "Nobody that's in a case of any allegation of domestic violence will pay anything," Rogers said. "We provide our services without charge." The non-profit has three locations in Okaloosa and Walton counties where people can also safely make custody exchanges. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/otcpod1/support

Today, Elizabeth Lowder, MSW, LCSW, Founder + Lead Therapist at Sage Tree Therapy LLC, joins me on the podcast and we discuss the deep topic of family of origin. Elizabeth does an incredible job of breaking down this topic and helping us understand that how we were raised is a huge source of information. As a therapist, understanding a clients childhood gives her insight about how they might react or respond as they are walking through their therapy sessions. Every been told you are just like your mother or done something with your child that reminds you of your childhood, good or bad?  How we were raised is ingrained into our subconscious and under moments of stress and anxiety behaviors will surface that we may not even realize are hidden. There is no shame or blame intended as we reflect over our childhood, but an emphasis on understanding of why we may do certain behaviors and gives us a path for growth and healing. Elizabeth starts our conversation with sharing the beautiful meaning behind naming her company Sage Tree Therapy and we finish our conversation discussing the facade of perfectionism and the value of being your perfectly imperfect self. This episode is packed with information and gives us pause to reflect and recognized why we made do things a certain way. Agency Overview Safe Connections is proud to be one of the St. Louis region’s oldest and largest organizations working to prevent and end domestic and sexual violence while helping survivors reclaim their lives. Our services in prevention education, crisis intervention and counseling make a big difference for families and the health of our community. Safe Connections has grown steadily since our inception in 1976 when we began as grassroots domestic violence crisis hotline. It quickly became clear that counseling services for victims of abuse were needed, so our first mental health therapists were hired. In 1988, responding to research and our own recognition that breaking the cycle of violence must include reaching youth, we developed and introduced Project HART (Healthy Alternatives for Relationships among Teens), a violence prevention curriculum, in schools across the metropolitan area. Safe Connections is the only domestic violence/sexual assault counseling and prevention agency in St. Louis to be accredited by the Council on Accreditation, due to our best practice standards covering governance, human resources, financial management and program services. We are also a member of the Better Business Bureaus Wise Giving Alliance and maintain a top rating with the United Way of Greater St. Louis.
