For many millennials, sex education was about awkwardly passing around a banana with a condom on it in PE class or carrying around a sack of flour pretending it was a baby. We want to do it better for our kids, OBVIOUSLY, but... do we really know how to do it better? We are excited to welcome Justine Ang Fonte on the show. She was featured in the New York Times about her work bringing sex ed to New York City's private schools (as well as the controversy she encountered with some parents). She is also the voice and author of the Audible Original How to Talk to Your Kids about Sex. Drawing on her 15 years of experience teaching kids about safety, affirmation and joy in their emotional and physical relationships, she offers some tangible tips for parents who are dreading "the talk" (psst - one tip is that it actually turns out it's not just one big talk, it's a series of mini talks over time).

Sex educators and researchers are often called upon to serve as expert witnesses in legal proceedings. This is particularly true in cases that center around kink or BDSM, consensual non-monogamy, and sexual or gender minorities. The job of the experts is to help judges and juries better understand the sexual issues at hand. In today’s show, I'm going to interview a colleague who has extensive experience serving as an expert witness. We're going to talk about the some of the cases she’s been a part of, what the experience is like, and more. My guest is Dr. Elisabeth Sheff, a researcher, expert witness, coach, speaker, and educational consultant. Dr. Eli holds a PhD in Sociology and certification as a Sexuality Educator from AASECT. She has published four books, over 30 peer-reviewed journal articles and chapters, and is currently editing a series of books on relationship and sexual diversity. Some of the specific questions we answer in this episode include: How do you decide which legal cases to get involved in? What are some reasons why you might not take a particular case? What kinds of legal issues come up for non-monogamous individuals that would require an expert witness? What are some of the legal issues that come up in the context of kink and BDSM? Given that consent is not a valid legal defense for injuries that arise during sex, what do kinky folks need to know with respect to avoiding potential legal peril? You can visit Dr. Eli’s website to learn more about her work. Got a sex question? Imagine that your genitals were in a constant, uncontrollable state of arousal. You might be thinking that doesn't sound too bad, but you'd be mistaken. Persistent genital arousal disorder (PGAD) is a highly distressing condition. People who have it live with unwanted arousal that doesn’t bring pleasure, and there's almost no relief from it. This makes it difficult, if not impossible, to concentrate, work, and sleep. In this episode, we're going to dive into what we know about PGAD, including how common it is, what causes it, and how it's treated. I am joined once again by Sue W. Goldstein, an AASECT certified Sexuality Educator and Clinical Research Manager at San Diego Sexual Medicine. Ms. Goldstein co-authored the book When Sex Isn't Good to provide education and empowerment to women with sexual dysfunction. Some of the questions we explore in this episode include: What does PGAD look like in everyday life? What kind of effects does this have on people? How long have we known about PGAD, and how common is it? What causes uncontrollable genital arousal? Are there any treatments that work? As a well-respected world leader in sexology, she is an academic, author, popular speaker, trainer and workshop leader, and hosts over 40 DVDs for couples' sexual enhancement. She has a private practice near Los Angeles and via Zoom globally. Dr. Patti is the Co-Founder of SexCoachU, the world's premier credentialing and training organization for sex coaching. Dr. Patti discusses the very real sexual issues facing ageing individuals. She points out that some of the "problems" people encounter can be overcome, but that there is the basic fact that as we age, some things change. In her words, things slow down, droop, and dry up! Positive self-talk can help... and Dr. Patti and her coaches can help with that. She talks about the 5 elements of the sexual self and the fact that as we age, we are most often challenged energetically - we start to lose energy, from our sedentary life, from not sleeping well, from simply "wearing down" - and how important it is to counteract that erosion. She is running a Mastermind Program in September, for high achievers currently in the sexuality profession. If you and your partner enjoy recreational sex and emotional intimacy, you might be Swolly! Swolly is a form of consensual non-monogamy where a couple is open to both polysexual and polyamorous relationships.  Are you Swolly?  Tune in to find out.  But first, mix up a Tennessee Peach, this episode's sweet and sophisticated cocktail while Ams fan girls over Bridgerton and shares her hot tale of a total mindfuck with a smart and sexy new partner.  Next, the Wives explore the difference between swinging and polyamory, including this middle ground of Swolly. Swolly is a person who identifies as both a swinger and a member of the polyamorous community in that they have multiple relationships simultaneously and also enjoy recreational sex. The term is a portmanteau of the words swinger and polyamorous. Ken Haslam of the Kinsey Institute originally coined the term Swolly.  Here are some key components to Swolly: The foundation is a marriage/committed couple.  That relationship takes precedence over all other polysexual and polyamorous relationships  The couple is open to polysexual relationship and may  seek out casual sexual encounters or sex with "friends" that don't involve deep connections.  The couple is also open to polyamorous relationships that involve both physical and emotional intimacy.  The level of intimacy can vary between relationships (some relationships are purely polysexual, polysexual with friendship, or polyamorous).  Polysexual relationships are less complicated and involve less commitment.  You have a responsibility to make sure your partner is well taken care of during a sexual encounter (consent, pleasure, aftercare, the basic “camp-fire rule”), but you don't have responsibility toward that person outside of the sexual encounter.  You might be friendly, you might be friends, that aspect might ebb and flow, but you don't have a responsibility to build on anything outside of the bedroom. In Polyamorous relationships, you agree to share emotional intimacy, which means that you are committing to be an emotional support for this partner. These relationships can be more meaningful and rewarding, but also a lot of work.    To get a sexpert's opinion, the Wives interview Dr. Elisabeth "Eli", Sheff, expert witness, researcher, educator & relationship coach with expertise in polyamorous culture.  Finally, the Wives assign themselves sexy homework: The Wives and the Misters are going to explore more emotionally intimate relationships with some of their swinger friends, including solo dates and lots of talk about "feelings". Dr. Elisabeth “Eli” Sheff is a researcher, expert witness, coach, speaker, and educational consultant. With a PhD in Sociology and certification as a Sexuality Educator from AASECT, Dr. Eli specializes in gender and sexual minority families, consensual non-monogamy, and kink/BDSM. Sheff is the foremost academic expert on polyamorous families with children, and her 25+ year Polyamorous Family Study is the only longitudinal study of poly families with children to date.  Dr. Elisabeth “Eli” Sheff is a researcher, expert witness, coach, speaker, and educational consultant. Today, Elizabeth Lowder, MSW, LCSW, Founder + Lead Therapist at Sage Tree Therapy LLC, joins me on the podcast and we discuss the deep topic of family of origin. Elizabeth does an incredible job of breaking down this topic and helping us understand that how we were raised is a huge source of information. As a therapist, understanding a clients childhood gives her insight about how they might react or respond as they are walking through their therapy sessions. Every been told you are just like your mother or done something with your child that reminds you of your childhood, good or bad?  How we were raised is ingrained into our subconscious and under moments of stress and anxiety behaviors will surface that we may not even realize are hidden. There is no shame or blame intended as we reflect over our childhood, but an emphasis on understanding of why we may do certain behaviors and gives us a path for growth and healing. Elizabeth starts our conversation with sharing the beautiful meaning behind naming her company Sage Tree Therapy and we finish our conversation discussing the facade of perfectionism and the value of being your perfectly imperfect self. This episode is packed with information and gives us pause to reflect and recognized why we made do things a certain way.
