Artist and producer Tiki Taane has cemented himself as a figure of stature in the Kiwi music scene. From his early days with Salmonella Dub, to headlining Big Day Out as a solo artist a decade ago, to his highly-anticipated performance at Synthony in the Domain, his creative output has evolved. He says the rise of social media has changed music and music festivals- and he needed to adapt to that. "There's a different energy. I don't want to sound like one of those old farts, but there definitely is. When people engage and really watch and really feel and listen as you perform without a cell phone, you feel like you're connecting more." Kiwi music legend Tiki Taane is well known for his music. He started with Salmonella Dub, going solo after eleven years with the band and releasing his album ‘Always On My Mind.' He's topped the charts and won multiple awards for his music, and now he's taken a step into the world of film. A recording of his 2021 concert extravaganza ‘Ōtautahi Proud' has been transformed into 'Tiki Taane in session with CSO,' the film finding international acclaim. After sold-out screenings in Christchurch, Dunedin, Wellington, Tauranga, and Hamilton, Auckland dates have finally been announced. Taane told Newstalk ZB's Mike Hosking that he was stoked that he took the time to capture the performance. “I wanted to record it and film it and hopefully get some good YouTube videos, you know what I mean?” “It ended up being like, okay, this is really good.” Taane's known as one of the pioneers of the New Zealand dub scene, but he's always been experimental with his music, bending and blurring the lines between genres. He started working with orchestras in his twenties, telling Hosking that it “feels like a privilege.” “Seeing the power of an orchestra, where they can go so, so quiet to massively dynamic in a matter of seconds, is an incredible feeling to watch and witness.” When it comes to translating his own music to work with orchestral accompaniment, Taane said that he broke it down to the fundamentals and built around them. “I wanted the orchestra to be really involved and really just going for it.” The intent was always there to create something that could potentially be turned into a film and they certainly succeeded, winning multiple international awards. Taane is using the success of ‘Tiki Taane in session with CSO' as an opportunity to push into the film industry. “I kind of wanted to show the film community, this is what I can do.” “It's like, ‘hey, let's go, I'm ready to make some music for films, bring it on, bring it on.'” ‘Tiki Taane in session with CSO' premieres in Auckland on the 5th of October. Tiki Taane is one of this country's most well-known and talented musicians and producers. Rising to prominence as live engineer and frontman of Salmonella Dub, he embarked on an incredibly successful solo career in 2007 including having his single ‘Always on my mind' stay on the top 40 charts for an incredible 55 weeks. Now as part of Waiata Anthems week in which our best musicians re-record previous songs in Te Reo Maori, he's remade the classic Moana and the Tribes song AEIOU. Tiki Taane joined Simon Barnett and James Daniels for this week's Six and a Song. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Tu is the inspired pairing of two powerful New Zealand artists who share a passion for fusing Māori electronic dub music with a politically conscious edge. Prior to Going West 2018, Tu had only been seen by international audiences. Our festival opening night was the first chance to see this remarkable collaboration between Moana Maniapoto and Paddy Free live in Aotearoa. Moana, singer/songwriter and leader of the band Moana & the Tribe, was inducted into the NZ Music Hall of Fame in 2016 and has been internationally acknowledged for her ground-breaking mix of traditional Māori music elements such as haka and poi with dance beats. Electronic dub producer Paddy Free (Pitch Black and Salmonella Dub) is a pioneer of the New Zealand electronic scene, his reputation built on experimenting with taonga puoro (traditional Māori music instruments), beats and global bass. Tu is a unique new collaboration that can only have come from the South Pacific. It slips and slides across genres, rhythmically and sonically compelling, with a message that resonates with the times.

G’day y’all Pubcasters - Once again it’s another sticky and smelly podcast from that little country that just won’t go away. Normal hosts Dodge and Shifty, are enlightened by the studio audience while plying themselves with savoury suds. On the list this week, the All Blacks pre-game polka, Stadium building blues, A Jafa’s take on a Jafa. A mother’s right to shoot children. And as per usual, the ensuing debate rages on for far too long. Pumpin’ in this week we have Hayseed Dixie with their bluegrass flavour of ‘Rockin’ in the Free World’. And for the drive home show it's none other than the Kiwi sensations Salmonella Dub sportin’ their track ‘Love Your Ways’.
