You'll have the time of your life when you listen to our latest episode, a look at the 1987 mega-hit Dirty Dancing. Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze were both watching their own careers grow and advance as the 80's lurched forward but it was this singular moment in the history of film when everything took flight. Swayze, among the sexiest men to ever live set up shop in everyone's head and heart and this sweet nostalgia bomb set down roots in a way no one was expecting. Dirty Dancing was among the most rejected scripts in 80's Hollywood, a movie everyone turned down for being too girly in an age where loud guy movies were all the rage. Along came the video distribution giant, Vestron Video, in the middle of a changing market, with designs on producing their own original movies and they gambled on this one for their first feature and boy, did it pay out big. Their first feature became one of the biggest hits of the 1980s and joined a pantheon of classic movie musicals. It's too bad Vestron couldn't recapture that magic as every follow-up picture tanked hard enough to take the entire company down with them. Dirty Dancing takes place at a Catskills mountain resort in the summer of 1963, right before the violent cultural changes of the 1960s. Baby Houseman is on vacation with her family and falls in with the resort staff who dance the night away when the vacationers all go to bed. She falls in love with dance instructor Johnny Castle, learns to dance, learns to love, and finds herself at this magical summer retreat. It's schmaltzy. It's naive. It's just what the movies needed in 1987. This week, we're celebrating Pride with the movie that brought the drag queen road trip genre to America! Hot on the high heels of The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert from 1994 Australia comes this 1995 American release starring Patrick Swayze, Wesley Snipes, and John Leguizamo. When their car breaks down in small-town Nebraska, three drag queens must win the hearts and minds of the local townsfolk while evading a bigoted sheriff. With supporting turns by Stockard Channing, Blythe Danner, Chris Penn, Arliss Howard, and cameos by RuPaul, Naomi Campbell, Robin Williams, and the titular statuesque actress herself, the film opened at number one at the box office and is considered groundbreaking for being the first mainstream Hollywood production to depict drag queens. Along with RuPaul's popularity, the 1990 documentary Paris is Burning, and the aforementioned Priscila, interest in drag drove audiences to the cinema. Critics, however, were less enthused, but Swayze and Leguizamo were both nominated for Golden Globes, and the film has, of course, endured as an icon of queer cinema. Now the four of us are piling into a yellow convertible 1967 Cadillac DeVille with an autographed copy of the improbably titled To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Nick goes back to October 27, 1990 to revisit the only time Patrick Swayze hosted Saturday Night Live, and it turned out to be a great showcase for him. Fresh off the success of Ghost and in the middle of filming Point Break, Swayze came in ready to do a little bit of everything. He opens with a memorable monologue dancing with his wife, Lisa Niemi, then jumps into a wide range of sketches, poking fun at his own image, playing a smooth Latin crooner, and even showing up alongside Hans and Franz. Of course, the night is best remembered for the now-legendary Chippendales sketch with Chris Farley, which still holds up as one of the funniest bits the show ever did. Nick plays the key moments and shares stories from behind the scenes of a show that was a little weird, very funny, and a perfect example of how committed Swayze was to whatever he was asked to do. Today on Too Opinionated, actor Richard Wharton stops by for a visit!  Richard is most known for taking over the role of Major Recurring Guest Star Dr. Wilhelm Rolf on Days of Our Lives in 2022 and has appeared in over 60 episodes. He can also be seen as Grayson in The Pitt on HBO Max, and as a Pawnbroker on several episodes of The Young and The Restless. Richard is particularly proud of his part in the "Claires sketch" in I Think You Should Leave, as well as his King's Alchemist role in Dragon Storm - one of two Sci-Fi films he filmed in Bulgaria and directed by the late great Stephen Furst. Richard's first film role was as Punk #2 trying to rob Billie Crystal and Gregory Hines in Running Scared.
