For their first Pateon exclusive episode, two lovestruck film critics, two "Crazy for Swayze" dads, and two ditto-making school teachers, Will Johnson and Don Shanahan, check off a few delightful and dreamy boxes with an opposite on the 1990 smash hit "Ghost." The movie has been in Don's all-time Top 10 for decades, and Will---coming off a 1990 binge with his recent first-time viewing of "Pretty Woman"---finally caved to curiosity and pressure to check off the Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore, and Whoopi Goldberg vehicle from his list of blind spots. Say ditto with them as they expound long-held and newfound praise for one of the romantic greats! Come learn more and stay for the mutual love and respect that fun movies encapsulate. Ben and Rob conclude the Swayze Trilogy with ‘Point Break', Kathryn Bigelow's perfect blockbuster from the golden days of 1991. Starring Patrick Swayze, Keanu Reeves and Gary Busey, ‘Point Break' tells the tale of Johnny Utah and Bohdi as their dangerous cat and mouse relationship as cop and robber takes a radical turn. But why is Bohdi's past never discussed? How is he so physically capable and intellectually pretentious? Perhaps because he's lived a full life as first a dancer, and then a bouncer? Could it be that Bohdi is James Dalton who is in fact Johnny Castle!?CONSUUUME to find out all this and much MUCH more!PLUS! Ben and Rob spinkick the wheels of ‘Roadhouse', the B-Movie made for AAA money all the way back in 1989. Starring Patrick Swayze as a legendary bouncer hired to restore order at a notorious bar and ending up the target of the ruthless crime boss who controls the town. But having never seen it before, can famously cynical Rob find anything to enjoy in this camp tale of love and violence? The late, great Patrick Swayze lit up the screen in classics like Ghost, Roadhouse, and Point Break, but Dirty Dancing made him a superstar. While Swayze stole the show, the music played a crucial role—enter Emmy-nominated, multi-platinum composer Stacy Widelitz. First, the Angelic Trio checks out the box office in 2024, with a round of Box Office Mojo - figuring out what films made the most money... domestically of course (because we aren't communists), and in the calendar year. Then, a list of films featuring the Big Guy Upstairs, Ol' No Shoulders down below, a few angels, a few demons and more. From Bill and Ted to Swayze to Albert Brooks to some Pixar Dr. Earl has never seen, it's a fun list. A blessed list, we hope. Thoughts and prayers. Has to be blessed with Malick, right? Right? Finally, a quick look at the new film "Companion", and both d$ and Mikey's recommendations.

Saturday Night live in the 1980s and 1990s are considered the golden era of the show. During these two decades, the show spawned many legendary performers that would go on to become comedy and movie stars influencing pop culture even to this day. For this week's episode, Rob and Dave take a look, and rank their favorite SNL performers from this golden era of the 80s and 90s to reveal who are their favorites, and who they think were the funniest and most influential, not quite ready for prime time players. SNL created so many classic characters and recurring sketches such as Wayne's World, The Church Lady, Hans and Franz and Canteen Boy. They were also always on the cutting edge of political satire, with their dead-on impersonations of the most powerful world figures of the time. Finally, the show became a must-see for the most popular musical acts of the time which kept the show constantly culturally relevant and appealed to the younger hip audience. So let's go back to lunch lady land, dance with Swayze for Chippendales and please, lay off us, we're starving as we head to 30 Rock this week to revisit Saturday Night Live. For week 3 of Swayze September, we're looking at trucking films. First, in BLACK DOG, Swayze reluctantly takes on a job transporting illegal weapons while thugs try to steal them from him. Then, in CONVOY, Kris Kristofferson leads a giant convoy against a corrupt sheriff.
The most rented video of 1991 came out the year previous in cinemas and is this week's pick for Dave. "Ghost" (1990) was a collaborative effort that blended romance, supernatural elements, and drama to create a timeless film. Directed by Jerry Zucker, known primarily for his work in comedy, the film marked a significant shift in his career. The screenplay, written by Bruce Joel Rubin, provided a compelling narrative that combined love and mystery, which attracted a strong cast including Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore, and Whoopi Goldberg. Swayze played Sam Wheat, a banker who is murdered and becomes a ghost, while Moore portrayed his grieving girlfriend, Molly Jensen. Goldberg's role as Oda Mae Brown, a psychic who helps Sam communicate with Molly, brought both comedic relief and emotional depth to the film. Her performance was particularly notable, earning her an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Filming took place in various locations around New York City, capturing the vibrant and sometimes eerie backdrop that added to the film's atmospheric tension. The production faced challenges, particularly in creating believable special effects for the ghostly sequences. The use of then-state-of-the-art visual effects, combined with practical effects and creative cinematography by Adam Greenberg, helped bring the supernatural elements to life. The iconic scene featuring the Righteous Brothers' song "Unchained Melody" during a pottery-making session between Swayze and Moore became one of the most memorable moments in cinematic history. "Ghost" was released to critical and commercial success, grossing over $500 million worldwide and becoming the highest-grossing film of 1990. Its unique blend of genres and strong performances have ensured its lasting legacy. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, so become a supporter. www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesback Plot Summary: After an act of violence claims the life of Sam Wheat, his spirit remains tethered to the mortal realm, driven by an unyielding love for his bereaved partner, Molly Jensen. As Sam grapples with his newfound ethereal existence, he uncovers a nefarious plot behind his untimely demise. With the unlikely assistance of the vivacious and reluctant psychic, Oda Mae Brown, Sam endeavors to protect Molly from impending peril. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thevhsstrikesback/support
