Artist and producer Tiki Taane has cemented himself as a figure of stature in the Kiwi music scene. From his early days with Salmonella Dub, to headlining Big Day Out as a solo artist a decade ago, to his highly-anticipated performance at Synthony in the Domain, his creative output has evolved. He says the rise of social media has changed music and music festivals- and he needed to adapt to that. "There's a different energy. I don't want to sound like one of those old farts, but there definitely is. When people engage and really watch and really feel and listen as you perform without a cell phone, you feel like you're connecting more." Kiwi music legend Tiki Taane is well known for his music. He started with Salmonella Dub, going solo after eleven years with the band and releasing his album ‘Always On My Mind.' He's topped the charts and won multiple awards for his music, and now he's taken a step into the world of film. A recording of his 2021 concert extravaganza ‘Ōtautahi Proud' has been transformed into 'Tiki Taane in session with CSO,' the film finding international acclaim. After sold-out screenings in Christchurch, Dunedin, Wellington, Tauranga, and Hamilton, Auckland dates have finally been announced. Taane told Newstalk ZB's Mike Hosking that he was stoked that he took the time to capture the performance. “I wanted to record it and film it and hopefully get some good YouTube videos, you know what I mean?” “It ended up being like, okay, this is really good.” Taane's known as one of the pioneers of the New Zealand dub scene, but he's always been experimental with his music, bending and blurring the lines between genres. He started working with orchestras in his twenties, telling Hosking that it “feels like a privilege.” “Seeing the power of an orchestra, where they can go so, so quiet to massively dynamic in a matter of seconds, is an incredible feeling to watch and witness.” When it comes to translating his own music to work with orchestral accompaniment, Taane said that he broke it down to the fundamentals and built around them. “I wanted the orchestra to be really involved and really just going for it.” The intent was always there to create something that could potentially be turned into a film and they certainly succeeded, winning multiple international awards. Taane is using the success of ‘Tiki Taane in session with CSO' as an opportunity to push into the film industry. “I kind of wanted to show the film community, this is what I can do.” “It's like, ‘hey, let's go, I'm ready to make some music for films, bring it on, bring it on.'” ‘Tiki Taane in session with CSO' premieres in Auckland on the 5th of October. While most high school students are posting their grievances on social media and calling out their adversaries via proxy, New Zealand punk rock upstarts Sit Down In Front have settled on a much more viable and effective way to get their point across, without hiding behind anything or anyone. All still at school, the boys have recently released the EP Fuelling The Fire, a scathing indictment of all that is wrong in the world wrapped neatly into five songs bursting at the seams with energy and taking no Umbridge with calling things as they see them. The fact that vocalist and frontman Cary Newman has Cerebral Palsy and is confined to a wheelchair matters little in the overall scheme of things. Sit Down In Front are just an exciting new and upcoming band and possibly one of the best things to come out of the Land of the Long White Cloud in forever.Newman sat down with HEAVY earlier this week to chat about the EP and the music on it."It's just old school punk rock rage,” he offered. “It's catchy and heavy to rock out to. There's amazing guitar solos that you can headbang and lose your shit to but also there's politically charged anthems like Don't Drink Bleach and Taking Out The Trash. Taking Out The Trash is probably one of my favourite moments musically with its hard hitting drums and screeching guitar as well as a footstomping chorus. There are also some sneaky hints of rap/rock scattered throughout the album, most noticeably Pixie Caramel with a Tiki Taana appearance, but there's also some rap things in Taking Out The Trash's bridge. Think Linkin Park, Chilli Peppers in terms of that influence, but there's also Rage Against The Machine and some heavy, almost AC/DC hooks in there and some Living End melodics. It has something for everyone. Rock, hard party anthems, telling stage invaders to get the f$%k out, politically charged rage anthems, calling out bullying and social injustice and complaining because you can't get your favourtite chocolate bar".In the full interview, Cory talks more about the lyrics to the songs, their fun yet serious nature, working with Tiki Taane, how he got into music, the value of EP's over full albums and more.”

COMMENT:Amidst the current blitz of pro-cannibas legalisation media (both social and mainstream) a few things are getting lost. One is balance. Where are the no-vote stories? Two, is the facts; no we are not voting on legalising medicinal cannibas. That’s already legal. The Drug foundation – pro the yes vote, has made claims that legalising recreational cannibas will make access to medicinal cannibas easier. That’s their claim,But it's not what we're voting on - yet it hasn’t stopped a lot of the messaging and advertising around the referendum being focussed on medicinal.Three, even the pro legalisation campaigners accept there are risks in normalising cannibas use.One 'yes-vote' columnist pointed out that “not all the facts support a rosy picture of life after a ‘yes’ vote..” She pointed out that normalisation of cannibas use ‘won’t be good for everyone’ and that ‘..legalisation probably won’t wipe out the criminal market completely either’.Despite that, her premise was that no social and health issues are ‘tied up in tidy bows’.. in other words, it’s not perfect but let’s vote it in anyway. That's a worrying low bar approach to a potentially major public health issue for this country. The other dodgy part of the pro-lobby argument, is that it comes largely from adults advocating on the basis of their own experiences, arguing the case for people like them. An open letter by cannibas users claiming the 'stoner stigma' was unfair, was largely about their own experiences with cannibas and what legalisation would mean for them.A Southland Hospital anaesthetist, musician Tiki Taane, The Opportunities Party leader, Wellington Pride Festival Chair, and a drag performer, all said they enjoy cannibas and wanted to encourage “the thousands of adult New Zealanders who enjoy cannibas responsibly, to feel it’s normal and acceptable..”I’m not sure how many laws need to be passed for adult Kiwis to feel validated in their recreational pursuits.Do they really need a ‘yes’ vote just to make them feel better about their cannibas use?And finally the argument that decriminalisation will stop users being ‘locked up’ for using cannibas. Cannibas offences have only declined as time’s gone by. I doubt we often ‘lock people up’ just for cannibas use alone. The justice argument, the ‘it’s not fair’ argument, doesn’t cut it, especially when you balance what’s fair, with what the practical out workings and cost of legalisation to our already stressed public health system would be.It’s hard when much of the information in advance of this vote is skewed from one angle only - and muddied with a spurious medicinal message. But I hope the least we can do is think beyond ourselves.. and whether legalisation helps us feel ‘normal’ or not.The vote is actually far more serious than that.

Stan Walker, Tiki Taane and Anna Coddington are among more than 20 Kiwi music stars who have formed a supergroup to record a Covid-19-busting tune from lockdown.Made across just seven days by singers and musicians in their living rooms, garages and back yards, 'Stay' is a waiata - and accompanying video - urging Kiwis to stay home to save lives.Released today, 100 per cent of the proceeds from the song and video is being donated to Music Helps, a charity that provides emergency help for Kiwi musicians facing hardship or illness and invests in music projects to help those in need. The idea originated from Anaru Mill, the head of Manaaki, a Government aid fund that's part of the national Covid Command group. After a string of conversations, Mikee Tucker from Loop, an Auckland-based company with a portfolio that includes a record label, got involved and enlisted some of our brightest stars.A collaboration with Te Māngai Pāho, the Crown entity responsible for the promotion of Māori language and culture, it's designed to showcase how Kiwis can pull together in a time of crisis.Produced by Tucker and written by Anna Coddington, Rob Ruha, Scott Tindale, Brad Kora, Ara Adams-Tamatea and Joel Shadbolt, vocalists include Walker, Taane, Ria Hall and Troy Kingi.Shadbolt - lead vocalist and guitarist with L.A.B. who recently topped the chart with In The Air - helped arrange the song and said the opportunity the create a positive message was "inviting"."Zoom's our best friend for this!" he said."We had one original meeting for the singers and songwriters over Zoom, and then voila."Once the song was written, a demo was sent to everyone. The singers recorded their own parts and sent the audio to producers who crafted the final version over three days."We went from that phone call to a completed song all in one week," Shadbolt said.He hopes it will encourage Kiwis by example."With the status of all these musicians, hopefully people will see that and say, oh if they're staying home so must I."Stay will be available via Apple Music and Spotify. Loop hopes people will share the track - and video - to circulate and reinforce the stay-at-home message. The full list of featured artists is: Joel Shadbolt (L.A.B), Troy Kingi, Stan Walker, Anna Coddington, Theia, Bailey Wiley, Rob Ruha, Pere Wihongi (Maimoa), Jackson Owens, Kings, Rei, Ria Hall, Hollie Smith, Tiki Taane, Fran Kora (Kora), Logan Bell (Katchafire) and Brad Kora (L.A.B).
