Michael is an ordained pastor, spiritual director, and co-founder of The Center for Spiritual Formation and Retreat in St. Louis, Missouri. Michael served as lead pastor of Living Vine Church in Northern California before taking on this most recent project. Michael has written a new book entitled Trenches and Tables (published by A Plain Account Press). In the book Michael explores the ongoing challenge of division and polarization in the church. He explores some of the causes, but also reflects on potential ways for the church to move forward in greater unity. Michael represents a generation of church leadership not only troubled by but often damaged by the forces of division in the church and I found both his experience and his reflections helpful and valuable for the church in this moment of generational transition.I have really valued my friendship and relationship with Michael over the last several years, even when we have disagreed with one another, I have deeply appreciated Michael's heart for Christ and his deep desire to listen and find paths of growth together. Should educational development seek to define itself as a discipline? What are the urgent conversations around our research and practice? Is the academy improving? In today's episode, I am excited to share my conversation with Michael Palmer and Lindsay Wheeler, Co-Editors of To Improve the Academy (TIA for short), which is the flagship peer-reviewed journal of the POD Network. It is an open-access, electronic journal that focuses on educational development practice and research. TIA publishes two issues annually with occasional special issues that respond to the profession and moment: Link to the Journal. Michael Palmer and Lindsay Wheeler, colleagues in the Center for Teaching Excellence at UVA, became the first ever Co-Associate Editors of To Improve the Academy in 2020 and now serve as the journal's first co-Editors. Michael, a Chemist by training, leads the Center for Teaching Excellence and has won numerous awards and recognition for his educational development scholarship and innovations. Like many POD Network members, my first encounter with Michael Palmer was the "Measuring the Promise" student-centered syllabus rubric that we use to both model and assess student-centered syllabi from faculty who go through our CDIs each summer. Lindsay Wheeler, Assistant Director of Educational Development Research and Assessment, is a prolific and award-winning scholar in the field of educational research. Recently she was awarded the 2021 International Journal of Academic Development Article of the Year Award for her article, co written with Dorthea Back, titled: “Understanding the impact of educational development interventions on classroom instruction and student success”. Her approach to educational development research embraces collaboration as evidenced by some of her recent projects: the SoTL Collaboratory in Virginia, and the Pandemic Educational Development Research Collaboratory, which she co-leads with Eric Kaldor, in collaboration with educational developers from other four-year institutions, which focuses on documenting and reflecting on the work of educational developers during the pandemic This article by Jamiella Brooks, Heather Dwyer, and Marisella Rodriguez, published in Faculty Focus, is mentioned in the interview "A Call to Interrogate Educational Development for Racism and Colonization" Here is the transcript of our conversation.

“So first of all, make very clear what the purpose of the team is, or the organization. What is it we're trying to accomplish? What's our big goal? What's our mission? Where are we going? Unless that is stated clearly, the people who are in the team won't be able to line up together. So think of a rowing crew in a rowing boat, and they don't know where they're going and nobody is setting the pace. They're going to have difficulty functioning well, and we have that kind of problem in many teams. People assume that they know what their purpose is, but spelling it out is actually very important, especially in larger organizations, but even in small teams with two or three people, it's a very important thing.” -Michael Palmer In this episode of Control the Room, I had the pleasure of speaking with Michael Palmer about his experience helping organizations with programs of instruction to help teams of all kinds build the cultures they need to excel.  He shares a thoughtful definition of ‘culture' and why it's so important in sustaining healthy teams.  Later, Michael shares some tips to develop better communication practices at work.  We then discuss the importance of ‘purpose' at work.   Listen in for Michael's interesting thoughts on the criteria all high performing teams meet.
