The South African National Taxi Council, SANTACO has pushed back against criticism from the Build One South Africa party, BOSA, over a R408m payout to taxi operators. This after BOSA leader Mmusi Maimane had questioned the Industry's tax compliance after Transport Minister Barbara Creecy confirmed the one-time gratuity, five years post the pandemic. Motorists will pay more for fuel from today. The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy has confirmed that the price of both grades of petrol will increase by 75-cents per litre. The diesel price will increase by between 70 and 75-cents per litre. While Illuminating paraffin is going up by 71-cents per litre at retail level. The department has attributed the increase to the current geopolitical tensions in the Middle-East affecting the transportation of oil and the weaker rand exchange rate. In August this year, one of the worst taxi strikes in the Western Cape started at short notice, leaving thousands of people stranded. Subsequently, at least five people were killed, over a 100 people arrested and damages of tens of millions of rand were reported. The strike was called by the South African National Taxi Council, or SANTACO, following the City of Cape Town's implementation of the National Land Transport Act. The city impounded non-compliant vehicles, which ignited the ire of taxi associations across the province, who claimed the industry was unfairly targeted. SABC reporter, Lerato Dlalisa reports.

There is a collective sigh of relief after taxis started operating again in Cape Town yesterday following a weeklong stay away by SANTACO which turned violent leaving 5 people dead and thousands of commuters stranded.
