Motorists in the Greater Peoria area will have to contend with construction work on several Illinois River bridges this summer, most notably a $24.6 million renovation of the Bob Michel Bridge.
A Cobb County Police Department officer shot a motorist during a traffic stop Wednesday night after the driver reached for a gun, the department said. According to a news release, at around 10:22 p.m. police pulled the driver over on Interstate 75 near Delk Road. While approaching the vehicle, the officer observed that the driver had a gun. The department said that the driver made a movement toward a firearm and ignored verbal commands. The officer then shot the driver, police said. Arriving officers rendered first aid until the driver could be transported to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital via ambulance. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating the incident. An inmate of the Cobb County jail died in custody Wednesday morning, the Cobb County Sheriff's Office said. James Martin of Mableton, was booked last Friday on methamphetamine possession and failure to maintain lane. Martin told deputies he was a heroin addict, “and had just binged the substance,” according to a news release. Wednesday morning, Martin told the jail's medical staff he was feeling unwell before having a seizure. Martin was given Narcan, a drug used to counteract an opioid overdose, but he died while en route to the hospital in an ambulance, the sheriff's office said. His time of death was reported as 9:21 a.m. The sheriff's office said later Wednesday they had since learned Martin suffered from stage IV hepatitis C. The office has asked the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to investigate the death. Martin is the seventh inmate to die in custody since Sheriff Craig Owens took office in 2021, and the first this year. Sheriff Owens has implemented new technologies such as medical monitoring wristbands to try and curb jail deaths after a string of inmate deaths under the previous administration. Though her own bill to rein in the powers of Georgia's accreditation agencies fell short this week, state Representative Ginny Ehrhart, the Republican representative from west Cobb, says the push isn't dead yet, with a similar measure having been passed by the Georgia Senate earlier this week. Ehrhart's bill — House Bill 506 — came out of the firestorm of controversy sparked during the Cobb County School District's “special review” by its accrediting company, Cognia, in 2021. Initiated after complaints by the school board's three Democrats over the partisan bickering on the board, the review dinged the district over shortcomings in “board governance.” Cognia's report would later be voided and replaced with a new one, as the firm's CEO Mark Elgart walked back other recommendations on improving the student achievement gap and fiscal responsibility. Ehrhart's bill would have barred Cognia and other firms from evaluating Georgia public school districts on political concerns like board governance, and set up an appeals process for negative reviews. Her legislation, however, never received a vote before the full House of Representatives before Crossover Day Monday. The west Cobb Republican told the MDJ a similar proposal from state Senator Greg Dolezal, a Republican from Alpharetta, is headed to the House after passing out of the Senate 52-0. Dolezal's bill, Senate Bill 204, is broadly similar to Ehrhart's in that it limits the standards by which accrediting firms can evaluate districts and schools. Pollen, already blanketing cars, causing sniffles and irritating eyes across Cobb and the rest of metro Atlanta, couldn't wait for spring to start breaking records. Atlanta Allergy and Asthma, an allergy practice with offices throughout the metro area, reported 14 days of pollen counts in the high range for February, a record for the month that beat the previous one of 10 days in February 2017. While Atlanta Allergy did not report any days of “extremely high” tree pollen counts — 1,600 or more — for February, the allergy group has already recorded “extremely high” counts three straight days this week, Monday through Wednesday. The 3,937 count on Tuesday was the ninth-highest in March during the past decade. Pollen counts, measured in grains per cubic meter of air over 24 hours, have been consistently high in the metro area before spring has officially started. Dr. Stanley Fineman, who sees patients at two Atlanta Allergy and Asthma locations in Marietta, said earlier pollen seasons have become the norm in the last three decades. Per Atlanta Allergy and Asthma, recent studies show the trend tracks with climate warming trends and said Southern states will be more greatly impacted than other areas of the U.S. For people worried about how the pollen is affecting them, Fineman said the first step they should take is to get an allergy test that will pinpoint what exactly their allergy is and what's triggering their allergic reactions. From there, Fineman and his colleagues can give patients allergy treatment plans. For years, he advised patients to begin their plans, often starting with over-the-counter medications like nasal sprays, around St. Patrick's Day, so that the treatments would have time to work by high pollen count days in late March and early April. Motorists in Austell pulled over for faulty tail lights, broken rearview mirrors or other damage to their cars could now be in for a gift card instead of a ticket. Thanks to a partnership between Advance Auto Parts and the Austell Police Department, officers responsible for traffic citations have $500 worth of gift cards from the auto shop. Instead of making drivers pay, the city will pay drivers to be safer on the road, giving them a gift card to fund repairs so that they comply with the law. Austell Police Chief Scott Hamilton was joined by other officers in the city's police department Thursday at the Advance Auto Parts on Veterans Memorial Highway to announce the collaboration. Mark Strenta, an Advance Auto Parts vice president, said this is the company's first partnership with any Cobb city, and the first to happen in one west of Atlanta. Advance Auto Parts already has similar partnerships with Sandy Springs and Lilburn, and Strenta hopes to expand to Peachtree City soon. Cobb County leaders were in the schools Thursday to read to students as part of Read Across America Day. Established by the National Education Association in 1998, Read Across America now offers year-round programming to encourage reading among students, and it does so by promoting books that students can both see themselves reflected in, as well as those that present experiences that may be different from their own. It also still marks March 2 as Read Across America Day, and all of March is National Reading Month. Smyrna Mayor Derek Norton read to fourth-grade students at Norton Park Elementary to recognize the event. As part of her “Read Across Cobb tour,” Cobb school board Nichelle Davis read to “Smyrna Elementary STARS” to celebrate the day. Another Cobb school board member, Leroy Tre' Hutchins, read to students at Riverside Elementary in Mableton. Kennesaw State used three straight 3-pointers deep into the shot clock, including what may have been the biggest shot in the program's Division I history, to hold off Lipscomb 80-71 in the semifinals of the ASUN tournament at the KSU Convocation Center on Thursday. The Owls will now host the conference championship game for the first time. They will get a rematch with co-regular season champion Liberty on Sunday at 3 p.m. with the winner earning the automatic bid into the NCAA tournament. It will be the first time KSU will play in the title game, and it will be the first game to be shown on national television from the Convocation Center, as ESPN 2 will broadcast it. If the Owls win on Sunday, they will clinch a spot in the NCAA tournament for the first time since the program moved to Division one. The Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area, stretching along the river for 48 miles through metro Atlanta, posted its highest ever number of visitors in 2022, the National Park Service announced Thursday. Some 3.5 million people are estimated to have visited the recreation area last year, representing an increase of about 9% from 2021. That outpaces the river's park service neighbor in Cobb, Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park, which had about 1.3 million visitors in 2022. Among all National Park Service units nationwide, the Chattahoochee ranked 21st in attendance. The park service said to avoid crowds, visitors are advised to visit NPS dot gov. A Cobb County police officer was involved in a car wreck Thursday morning. Police spokesperson Shenise Barner said the collision occurred around 7 a.m. near Atlanta Road at Bingham Street, in the Fair Oaks area. There were complaints of minor injuries, but Barner said this was not a “major crash.” Cobb's Selective Traffic Enforcement Unit is investigating the incident. The Kennesaw Parks & Rec Department will have the annual Bunny Breakfast on April 1 at the Ben Robertson Community Center in Kennesaw. There will be two seatings available: 8 to 9:15 a.m. and 10 to 11:15 a.m. Attendees will be treated to a buffet including hot and ready pancakes, scrambled eggs and sausage, as well as a medley of fresh fruit and breakfast sweets. Everyone's favorite cottontail will be making his way from table to table to say hello to all the boys and girls. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own camera to capture photos with the Easter Bunny. Tickets are $8 per person and can be purchased online or at the Ben Robertson Community Center. Advance purchase is required. Tickets are non-refundable after March 24. Children ages two and under do not need a ticket if they will be sitting in laps. New this year, experience the beauty of Smith-Gilbert Gardens at the annual Egg Hunt on April 1 with a combo Bunny Breakfast/Egg Hunt ticket. The Egg Hunt is open to children up to nine years of age. Easter themed crafts will be available at the Egg Hunt, as well as organized garden games. #CobbCounty #Marietta #LocalNews - - - - The Marietta Daily Journal Podcast is local news for Marietta, Kennesaw, Smyrna, and all of Cobb County. It's Monday, January 30th, A.D. 2023. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. By Adam McManus (Adam@TheWorldview.com) Iranian Christians face increased pressure in Islamic Republic In the Islamic Republic of Iran, Christians continue to face increased persecution as the Muslim authorities tighten their grip in response to nationwide protests since September 2022. Christian converts from Islam, in particular, face imprisonment of house church leaders and denial of their basic rights as citizens. Since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, that brought the current Iranian government to power, hundreds of thousands of Iranians have trusted Christ as Savior. However, Christians are considered to be direct enemies of the Iranian state. According to Open Doors, Iran is the eighth most dangerous country to live in for Christians. Please pray for our Iranian brothers and sisters in Christ. 1 Corinthians 12:26 says, “If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.” Pfizer exec: Mutate COVID virus to profit from more vaccines The Project Veritas staff filmed Jordan Walker, the Pfizer Director of Research and Development, revealing the company might consider creating mutated forms of COVID-19 to develop highly profitable vaccines, reports LifeSiteNews. Listen. UNDERCOVER REPORTER: “Pfizer ultimately is thinking about mutating COVID?” WALKER: “Well, that's not what we say to the public. You know how the virus keeps mutating?” REPORTER: “Yeah.” WALKER: “Well, one of the things we're exploring is like, ‘Why don't we just mutate ourselves?' If we're gonna do that, though, there's a risk of, as you could imagine, no one wants to be having a pharma company mutating viruses. It would be very controlled to make sure that the virus that you mutate, doesn't create something like, goes everywhere.” Dr. Robert Malone, a scientist and the Medical Director of the Unity Project, was horrified. MALONE: “The gentleman seems to have absolutely no moral compass at all. If this is the quality of individuals within Pfizer that are making these huge decisions that risk global public health, it's profoundly corrupt!” In response, Republican leaders and conservative commentators have demanded answers from Pfizer and criticized the power held by pharmaceutical companies. Florida Republican Senator Marco Rubio sent a letter to CEO Albert Bourla asking for transparent information regarding the pharmaceutical's plans to mutate the COVID virus. In a written statement, Pfizer did not dispute that Dr. Jordan Walker told a Project Veritas journalist that Pfizer is exploring how to “mutate” the COVID-19 virus. However, Walker, the Pfizer Director of Research and Development, explained how Pfizer was already mutating the COVID virus. WALKER: “The way it would work is that we put the virus in monkeys.” UNDERCOVER REPORTER: “Okay.” WALKER: “and we successively causing them to keep infecting each other, and we collect serial samples from them. And then, once they're more infectious, the virus we'll put them in another monkey and just constantly actively mutate it. That's one way.” Fox News host Tucker Carlson weighed in. CARLSON: “A Pfizer executive bragging on camera about how his company conducts a kind of Frankenstein science, manipulating COVID viruses for profit, imperiling potentially the entire world doing it in secret, possibly in violation of federal law. Bragging about this. No matter what your politics are, doesn't matter who you voted for, that's a huge story. And you would think every reporter in this country would be itching to follow up on it, calling Pfizer, telling the public about it. But no, that's not happening.” Bodycam video reveals hammer assault of Paul Pelosi Two disturbing police videos were just released Friday. First, the long-suppressed October 28, 2022 video from a San Francisco policeman's bodycam that shows a portion of the brutal hammer attack on Paul Pelosi, the husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. The assailant's name is David DePape, a 42-year-old Canadian illegal alien, who abused drugs, was part of a public nudist group, and had exhibited psychotic behavior, reports the New York Post. In a bizarre audio statement which DePape read to a KTVU reporter last Friday, he didn't apologize for the attack, but apologized for not hurting more people. New video of cops beating a Tennessee motorist In the second video released Friday, Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old black motorist who was pulled over in Memphis, Tennessee on January 7th for reckless driving, was aggressively beaten by five black Memphis police officers, reports National Public Radio. He had tried to flee on foot. Nichols died three days later in the hospital. The footage emerged one day after the officers were charged with murder in Nichols' death. In response, talk show host Todd Starnes reports that a truck rammed stores followed by looting Saturday. Christian cop resigns after superiors upset with anti-“gay” marriage post And finally, Jacob Kersey, a 19-year-old Christian police officer in Georgia, has resigned after he was told by superiors that he could not share his personal religious views on social media, reports The Daily Signal. On January 2, Kersey posted a 20-word message about his view of marriage on Facebook. In a paraphrase of the Apostle Paul's teaching in Ephesians, he wrote, “God designed marriage. Marriage refers to Christ and the church. That's why there is no such thing as homosexual marriage.” The next day, Kersey said he received a phone call from his supervisor, who told him that someone had complained about the post and to take it down. When Kersey refused, the supervisor warned him that failure to delete the Facebook post on marriage could result in his termination. Kersey said he then was contacted by Lt. Justin Hardy who told him that the Port Wentworth Police Department did not want to be held liable by homosexuals. Kersey still refused to delete the post. Kersey said that Police Chief Matt Libby told him that his Facebook post on marriage was the “same thing as saying the N-word.” After a week of paid administrative leave, Kersey was told he could not work as one of the department's officers if he continued to share his “interpretation or opinion on Scripture if it was deemed offensive.” He refused to be censored and quit. He told The Daily Signal that his decision to share his story “could very well mean I will not have another opportunity to be a police officer. That has been an extremely difficult reality to accept, but I sincerely believe speaking up is the right thing to do.” Jacob Kersey exemplifies 1 Corinthians 16:13 which says, “Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong.” Join me and send a polite email of objection to Port Wentworth Police Chief Matt Libby about his department's bullying of Officer Jacob Kersey. On Saturday morning, the icy weather conditions, made worse by frozen rain, meant that many motorists found themselves stuck on the icy road, resulting in huge tailbacks. The staff of Kelly’s Londis Milltown gave them free teas, coffees and scones to keep them warm and many people from Milltown also helped to get them moving again by spreading salt on the road. A grateful motorist contacted Jerry to express his thanks. Denis Heffernan who’s manager of Kelly’s Londis speaks to Jerry.
On Wednesday's show, two commercial truck drivers told us their concerns about snowclearing. They said highway conditions during and after heavy snowfalls in November were bad this year, and drivers said they didn't see as many plows as they'd like to see. They also said conditions from Gander and west of there were particularly concerning. We tool their concerns to Elvis Loveless, NL's Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure.
