On this week's episode of Out and About, host Jenn Gordon is joined by Rebekah Dentino and LaCora Holesome to talk about Corn Stock Theatre's production of When We Were Young and Unafraid, a play written by Sarah Treem. In the early 1970s, before Roe v. Wade, before the Violence Against Women Act, Agnes has turned her quiet bed and breakfast into one of the few spots where victims of domestic violence can seek refuge. As the drums of a feminist revolution grow louder outside of Agnes's tiny world, Agnes is forced to confront her own presumptions about the women she's spent her life trying to help. Show dates are March 18, 19, 25, and 26 at 7:30pm and March 20 and 27 at 2:30pm at Corn Stock Theatre Center in Upper Bradley Park. For tickets and more information visit Corn Stock Theatre.

Alena Smith got her start as a playwright, which she believes “uniquely prepares you for what it takes to be a creator and show runner of a television show.” This background, of being a collaborator and visionary, helped Smith and many of her Yale peers transition to television work. She's known for working on Aaron Sorkin's ‘The Newsroom' and fellow alum Sarah Treem's ‘The Affair.' In her most recent project, she's the creator of Apple TV's ‘Dickinson.' In the Hailee Steinfeld-led series, Smith invites audiences to see an inside look at the world of Emily Dickinson. In this interview, Smith talks about the unique perspectives of ‘The Affair,' how ‘Louie' inspired the style of ‘Dickinson,' her take on a contemporary Emily Dickinson, her unique writer's room for this historical fiction piece, and her recipe for being a prolific writer. In this episode, Tonje talks to television writer, producer, and playwright Sarah Treem about how the war on aging is incredibly anti-female, the male hero's journey versus the female hero's journey. Sarah Treem is a television writer, producer, and playwright. Treem is the co-creator and showrunner of the Golden Globe-winning Showtime drama THE AFFAIR. The series received four Golden Globe nominations during its run, including wins for Best Television Drama, Best Actress in a Television Drama, and Best Supporting Actress in a Television Drama. She recently developed a limited series based on the life of actress and inventor Hedy Lamarr for Apple. She is currently adapting Rodham, Curtis Sittenfeld's best-selling novel, into a series with Hulu. Quick Cap #4: The Affair's Real Life Dual Narratives, Christina Tosi and PFW's first live event! The theme of this episode is “adaptation”. We’re talking about a number of news items involving novels being adapted for the big and small screen and how we personally adapted to do our first Pop Fiction Women live event (at :28) The Affair. We discuss the explosive story around conflicting accounts from show creator Sarah Treem and star Ruth Wilson about whether a toxic work environment existed on set at The Affair. The two articles (linked below) read like an episode of the show with different points of view and the complete lack of an objective truth. (at 1:30) The Woman in The Window Trailer is out. The movie looks creepy and so is A.J. Finn’s sketchy recitation of his personal past. It stars Amy Adams and Julianne Moore, who are amazing, but we’re not sure if they are enough of a draw to get us into the theatre for this one. (At 14:30) Megan Abbott’s TV adaptation of Dare Me is a bonanza of women in front of the camera and behind the scenes. Women are in total control of this story and we are so here for it. (At 18:14) Christina Tosi, the brilliant baker and founder of MilkBar, has us totally inspired, not just by her delicious creations, but more importantly by her hustle, determination and ability to adapt. She is most comfortable when she is uncomfortable and we couldn’t agree more! (At 22:08) Pop Fiction Women had our first live event! Talk about adapting, on very short notice, we hosted a screening of Love Actually at the Wing in NYC. We talked about the movie, the podcast, and most importantly, we survived our first live chat to tell you all about it (31:00) Stay Complicated! "The Affair" showrunner Sarah Treem on what's ahead for season 3, who stabbed Noah, the series finale in Paris, and her plans for season 4.
"Get comfortable with people hating you," Sarah Treem, who created THE AFFAIR, which is in the midst of its third season on SHOWTIME, says about what it takes to be a boss. Her keen awareness about the messiness of real life is palpable in this epic series. Of course, it helps having actors like Dominic West , Maura Tierney, Joshua Jackson, and Ruth Wilson depict what the cost of prison, murder, infidelity, children, death, mental illness play on even the strongest relationships. This season continues to shed light on how people use, abuse, and find refuge in sex, lust, and love, but also delves into what it takes to live with baggage and the limits of resilience. Everyone and every relationship has a breaking point, and this season looks at what role mental illness, custody battles, prison, infidelity, children, death of parents, work play. In our interview Treem unveils what happens behind the curtain. She outlines what it takes to sell stories in Hollywood, and, once you do, the glory and challenges...

Sarah Treem on co-creating The Affair, and subverting female archetypes.
Cherry Jones, who won acclaim for her portrayal of Amanda Wingfield in The Glass Menagerie on Broadway this past fall, has made a quick return to the New York stage. She’s starring in a new play, When We Were Young and Unafraid, by Sarah Treem, a writer for the Netflix series "House Of Cards." When We Were Young and Unafraid explores feminist themes, forcing the audience’s perspective by setting the story in 1972, the year before the Supreme Court ruled in Roe v. Wade. Jones plays a woman who runs a bed-and-breakfast as the cover for an ad-hoc shelter for battered women. New York Times theater critic Charles Isherwood considers the converging characters and plotlines in this Manhattan Theatre Club production, directed by Pam McKinnon. Performances continue through Aug. 10 at New York City Center Stage 1.
