I am so pleased to be joined by groundbreaking filmmaker Mira Shaib, director of Arzé, a brilliant first feature comedy-drama about the relationship of a family in Lebanon. (In North America, it should be released early next year.)Mira Shaib is an alumnus of prestigious film development labs and residencies, including Robert Bosch Stiftung, where she attended the Film Academy Baden-Württemberg, Film Independent's Global Media Makers LA Residency, the Red Sea Lodge, and the Torino Film Lab. Her first feature film was among the first recipients of the Red Sea Film Festival Foundation Production Fund. Mira is the cofounder of Cinema For All, an arts initiative with a mission to make cinema accessible in rural Lebanon. The initiative was launched in 2019 in Ain Ebel with film-making workshops and outdoor screenings of Sophie Boutros' Mahbas and Cyril Aris's documentary feature The Swing. In this episode, we talk about:how she got started and the amazing sense of place for this film -- did she ever feel pressure to downplay the Lebanese aspect?what they should expect to see when they watch the film;how she made a first feature without writing the script and the importance of making it as team with the writers;what it's like being a female director with a Lebanese film and the inspiration of other female directors like Nadine Labaki being nominated for the Oscars;the strength of her female characters in the film;the importance of the sense of place in Arzé and how she showed the colors of Lebanon;how she wouldn't feel comfortable making a film in a place she didn't know intimately;her thoughts on production grants, Arab film, and the Red Sea Film Festival;what the process was like for Arzé to be Lebanon's selection to the Oscars;how she feels about where she lives -- Montreal -- and its role in independent film;and what her next film will be -- "set in Lebanon...about sisters fighting over a house"Mira's Indie Film Highlight: TO A LAND UNKNOWN (2024) dir. by Mahdi Fleifel Links:Follow Mira On InstagramFollow Arzé On InstagramArzé On LetterboxdArzé On WikipediaSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/first-time-go/exclusive-content

The story behind SALMA'S HOME eschews the usual woman in peril narrative that is often presented in today's Arabic cinema. Director and writer Hanadi Elyan, one of the few female Arab filmmaking voices, follows beautifully in the footsteps of bold voices like Nadine Labaki, Raja Amari, and Jocelyn Saab. SALMA (Juliet Awad) is a talented baker living alone in a large old house overlooking downtown Amman, her daughter FARAH (Sameera Asir) is a young working mother with marital problems. Their lives are disrupted by the death of Salma's ex-husband- BAKRI. The funeral takes place at his current wife's house, LAMIA (Rania Al Kurdi), an aspiring socialite who is obsessed with building her brand online. After the funeral, shocking facts come to light leading to clashes and finally forcing the three women to accept some harsh realities and take control of their lives. Director / writer / editor Hanadi Elyan (Reel Arab Productions) stops by to talk about finding the superb cast of actors who help make the film take flight, as well as the inspiration for writing and directing this beautifully told story of heartbreak, betrayal, renewal, friendship and love. Last month Netflix's Arabic movie Perfect Strangers quickly became the number 1 streamed movie across the Middle East. So just like everyone else, we recently watched the Arabic adaptation. The movie is set in Lebanon, and the plot revolves around a group of friends who decide to read every message they receive on their phones over the course of a dinner. Suffice it to say: chaos ensues. In this episode of Who Run the Time, we discuss the different plot points, and whether we would take part in a similar game with our friends and partners (oh hell no). We also take a look at the significance of this movie in regards to the Arab content landscape (we celebrate more genre films) as well as take a deeper look into the backlash the film faced (team Mona Zaki over here).Did you watch Perfect Strangers? The Next Reel by The Next Reel Film Podcasts

Nadine Labaki started as an actress but starting in 2007 with Caramel, she started working as a writer/director. Her films look at life in Lebanon but through unique prisms that aren't confined by the grim realities. In her 2011 film Where Do We Go Now?, Labaki uses a magical realist tone with musical elements to craft a story about the women in an isolated village working together to stop the men – divided by Christian and Muslim faiths – from constantly fighting. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue our 10 Year Anniversary series with Labaki's Where Do We Go Now?. We clearly enjoy Where Do We Go Now? and have a lot to say about Labaki's film. This is a film that may work for some people and not others, but it worked for us. The story shines with magical realism, creating this isolated town where the news is sparse, allowing for the women to craft their own narrative essentially. That allows for a unique story, one that surprises as much as it delights. The women of the town, led by Labaki playing Amal, keep trying ploy after ploy to stop the men, divided by religion, from fighting. Not all their plans work, but they're always thinking and ready to try new things, even if that means hiring Ukranian exotic dancers for a week. That's an area we struggled with a bit, but it still generally works. And with Labaki at the helm, this unique story feels cohesive. The cinematography and music come together wonderfully in the musical elements. Could it have used more songs? Maybe. But we like it as-is and think it would have to be double its length to really include more songs. It works the way it is with just the few musical moments. They're enough to remind us of the magic of this world It's a fun movie about a serious subject and allows for a unique vision of this community without saying that Labaki's solved religious conflicts the world over by allowing women to be the ones driving the decisions. It's a beautiful story of community and one that really surprised us with its warmth. Check it out then tune in. The Next Reel – when the movie ends, our conversation begins! ÉP 52 : Sexualité des Chrétiens d'Orient - avec Bernard HEYBERGER

JINS

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 12, 2021 23:00

Re-bonjour !

On the podcast this week, Steven and Sean are once again joined by the fantastic Eimanne El Zein. This time, we're trading in the absurd hilarity of The Room and getting into a deep conversation about a sobering 2018 film from Nadine Labaki, Capernaum. Get ready for a tough film. You know us. We're not going to sugarcoat things for you. This film is challenging, rough, and sad. Most of the film will feel like a grand and real tragedy, and in many ways it is. This is not a fantasy film; there are too many people living a grueling and desperate life like that of Zain. It's happening right now as you listen to this episode. I'll let you know now, though—there's some redemption at the end. There's a glimmer of much-needed hope. Like finding a pool of water after being lost in the blazing desert for days, the ending is restorative. To get there, you have to cross through a river of agonizing emotions. On the plus side, we've also got a wonderful guest to help us navigate those waters. At least there's that. We talk about it in the podcast, but it should be put into writing here. The performance that first-time actor, Zain Al Rafeea, give is astonishing. It's unlike anything you've ever seen before. There's an authenticity and rawness with which he imbues his character. It would be an astonishing feat for any actor, but when the person in question is a child? That brings on a new level of admiration. His performance is well worth the heaviness of this film. There's a lot to be troubled by with this story's subject matter. Extreme poverty, lack of compassion, and neglect for human life are a lot to take. We all think it's a necessary film, though. It's all too easy to forget that our lives are probably better than we think they are. We lack the perspective we need to appreciate our lives to the fullest. This film can give that very necessary shot of perspective. It's powerful and worth anyone's time. The 2019 Oscars are on Sunday and no women are in the Best Director category. However, one woman's made it in the Best Foreign Language category. She's Nadine Labaki, the director of Capernaum. She's also the first Lebanese woman ever to be nominated for an Oscar. Capernaum is set in the slums of Beirut and follows a young boy called Zain who sues his parents for giving him life. Staying with the Oscars, this year we have the hashtag #OscarsSoMale. That's because some categories contain no women nominees at all. They are: Best Director, Original Score, Film Editing and Best Picture. Overall women make up just a quarter of this year's nominees across the board.
