This week, the boys head back to 1996, a peak movie year featuring dozens of movies we've all seen multiple times! Dave kicks things off with mini-reviews of “Captain America: Brave New World” and “Companion”. John gives some quick thoughts about “Nickel Boys”. For our featured conversation, we chose “Primal Fear”, the movie that gave us Edward Norton and helped Richard Gere prepare for “Chicago”. Set in and out of a Chicago courtroom, this movie reminds you why movies were better in the 90s. And as John said, it's more than just a genre film! Our phone number is 646-484-9298. Welcome back, Cromrades! This week, we take on two combat sports movies that damage us right where it hurts - the emotions! We're talking Million Dollar Baby directed by Clint Eastwood, and starring Eastwood, Hilary Swank, and Morgan Freeman. Then, we enter the squared circle to face off against the Von Erich family in The Iron Claw, directed by Sean Durkin and starring Zac Efron, Jeremy Allen White, Harris Dickinson, , Maura Tierney, Stanley Simons, Holt McCallany, and Lily James. In which the Mister joins me in reviewing THE IRON CLAW (2023), from writer/director Sean Durkin. Based on the true story of the Von Erich wrestling dynasty, the film is told from the viewpoint of Kevin Von Erich (Zac Efron) and weaves the tale of how this Texas-based wrestling family's legacy is marked by both incredible success in the ring and tragic personal struggles, offering a raw and honest portrayal of the human cost of fame and fortune. Rounding out the cast is Jeremy Allen White as Kerry, Harris Dickinson as David, Stanley Simons as Mike, Maura Tierney as Doris, their mother, Lily James as Pam and Holt McCallany as Fritz their father. The film has a run time of 2 h and 12 m, is rated R. It is streaming on Max and is to buy/rent on Prime Video. The movie event of the summer has arrived! We saw Twisters in 4DX with motion-seats, wind, spraying water, vibration, smoke, and strobe lights! On a packed discount night at the Regal North Hollywood, Twisters proved to be the perfect 4DX movie that rocked our worlds for two solid hours. After sharing our recently rediscovered love for Jan de Bont's Twister (1996), we headed into the Pepsi 4DX with large Pepsis in hand. From the opening tornado scene, we knew we were in trouble. Twisters is directed by Lee Isaac Chung and stars Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, Anthony Ramos, Brandon Perea, Maura Tierney, and Sasha Lane. Deadpool & Wolverine unfortunately kicked Twisters out of 4DX, but if you somehow get a chance to see it in 4DX, DO IT! And if you feel it, chase it! We got twins!!

This week, it wouldn't be the final episode of July if we weren't talking about a huge new theatrical release, but we're doing it a bit differently this time around as for the very first time (officially anyway) we review two movies at the same time! July's canon consideration is 1996's Twister, directed by Jan de Bont and starring Helen Hunt, Bill Paxton, Jami Gertz, Cary Elwes, Lois Smith, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Alan Ruck, Todd Field, Joey Slotnick, Jeremy Davies and Zach Grenier, but we spend just as much if not more time discussing 2024's Twisters, directed Lee Isaac Chung and starring Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, Anthony Ramos, Brandon Perea, Maura Tierney, Sasha Lane, Katy O'Brian, Kiernan Shipka, David Corenswet and Paul Scheer. And we're joined to discuss both by returning favourite / girlfriend of the show Ashley Olson, a self-confessed "weather girlie" for whom the original film has been a lifelong fave. It's a delightful chat as two prairie girls roast an ignorant city boy for knowing nothing about storm tracking. If you'd like to watch the films before listening along to our conversation, Twister is currently streaming on Crave and Starz in Canada at the time of publication, while Twisters can be found in theaters everywhere. Oh, you thought we would be discussing other works this week as well? Well, we're not. Two movies is more than enough, you sickos. We'll be back next week to kick off P.T.August, a month-long celebration of the works of Paul Thomas Anderson, beginning with 2012's The Master, a movie J Mo's been hauling around on Blu-ray for 11 years without ever having watched it. That all changes next Friday! So come on back now, as the rest of our PTA slate includes Phantom Thread, Inherent Vice, Licorice Pizza and concludes with our August canon entry Boogie Nights. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!
In 1996, a summer blockbuster movie blew into theaters and knocked everybody off their feet. That movie was “Twister” and starred Helen Hunt and the late, great Bill Paxton. Now 28 years later, we get a long awaited follow-up to that tornado-terrific, earth-moving box office hit, called “Twisters.” Now instead of Bill Paxton, the rapidly rising star Glen Powell tries to fill his boots. He plays Tyler, who calls himself a tornado wrangler who likes to go viral and peddle his merch. One of his phrases, as he tries to entertain his fans, is “You don't face your fears. You ride em'!” We also have Daisy Edgar-Jones as Kate, who was a storm chaser until tragedy struck, and so now she stays out of the field. Just so the plot can move forward, she's coaxed back out into the wild, windy west to help some other storm chasers potentially save lives from a mass of tornadoes. All these characters bring their impressive and intricate modern day technology to this world of tornadoes, but no amount of tech will save you from the deadly, disastrously massive force of a tornado and the debris that it turns into lethal projectiles. Will Tyler take it too far in finding that rush? Can Kate do anything to give the people in the path of these fatal forces of nature a chance? Is it worth finding out? Check out this episode to find out! “Twisters” also stars Anthony Ramos, Brandon Perea, Maura Tierney, Harry Hadden-Paton, Sasha Lane, Daryl McCormack, Kiernan Shipka, Nik Dodani, David Corenswet, Tunde Adebimpe, Katy O'Brian, David Born, Paul Scheer, Laura Poe, Austin Bullock and Stephen Oyoung. "We ended on such a cliffhanger with Isaac presenting the wrench at the police station to Jeff Daniels' character. It allowed us to sort of start from a place of what's going to happen next? And I think because what is drawn in the novel and because of what Danny brought into the original script of the first season and all the ideas he brought in. The biggest thing we talked about was the relationship between Del Harris and Grace Poe and what is the ambiguity there? And I think when, when you start answering questions on either side of that too firmly, I think it allows the audience to disconnect from it and then they go, Oh, he's a monster, or she's a monster. And then you just have this sort of a good and bad guy, good and bad woman narrative that is oversimplified all too often in our culture.""It felt to me like a lot of the drive of season two is about payback. There are people who feel they're owed things. They want payback. There are people who feel like they have to get back at people because they've been wronged in some way. Jeff Daniel's character, Del Harris, is really driven by trying to right what he sees as wrongs that he did in the first season. "S. E. Hinton, Susie Hinton wrote The Outsiders when she was 15 and 16. It was published when she was 17. She was told by one editor in particular that she couldn't have any swear words, so she was sort of forced to write about these very big, intense, love-and-death operatic themes where there's a boy who dies by suicide by cop. There's a boy who dies from a fire. So it's about grief. His parents die in a car crash prior to all that. There's this hugely stacked deck of grief that exists in the novel. But when you read the novel, there's a very sweet and loving tone to it. So when I started working on it, I recall childhood in Joliet, Illinois. My mom was a single parent, and she raised three kids on her own on a nurse's salary. So I had to give myself permission to take her great dark themes and actions that are in her novel and like give language to it that was also from an adult world.Right now, live theater is probably much different than looking at a screen. It's much different than looking at your computer or your Game Boy or whatever. I see grown men on the subway playing video games on their phones. And we're not even looking at each other on the subways anymore. We're like deep in our in a screen. And I wonder what that's done. And so I think theater actually has a powerful ability to rewire us to the human experience. In a way, every character has something, some way that they're trying to right the wrong that was done to them or that they did in the first season. Jeff Daniel's character, Del Harris, is really driven by trying to right what he sees as wrongs that he did in the first season. And he's staying a little bit away from Grace because he doesn't know how much to blame her or how much were his own decisions or how much she kind of drove him to do things. So that was fun to explore."Dan Futterman is creator, executive producer, and writer of Amazon Prime's American Rust, the acclaimed crime drama starring Jeff Daniels, Maura Tierney, and David Alvarez. Director: Sean Durkin Writers: Sean Durkin Starring: Zac Efron, Jeremy Allen White, Harris Dickinson, Maura Tierney, Holt McCallany Runtime: 2 Hour 12 Minutes Synopsis: The true story of the inseparable Von Erich brothers, who made history in the intensely competitive world of professional wrestling in the early 1980s. The Iron Claw has an absolutely fantastic cast and set of performances and tells the very tragic tale of the Von Erich family. This is definitely a heartbreaking story but it's also a script that doesn't do the full story justice. There's a lot of focus on the tragedy that seems to follow this family around but does so by sacrificing a lot of the context and story. To be fair that context would probably make the story even more heartbreaking but it would have taken the Iron Claw from a good movie with great performances, to a great movie with even greater performances. This is the difference between a film that gets award season buzz for an actor (e.g. Zac Efron) and a movie that gets the full award season push for being an all around great film. For this week's second podcast review, I am joined by Nadia Dalimonte, Josh Parham, Giovanni Lago & Ricky Valero. Today, we are reviewing the latest film from Sean Durkin, "The Iron Claw," starring Zac Efron, Jeremy Allen White, Harris Dickinson, Maura Tierney, Holt McCallany & Lily James. Based on the unbelievable, tragic, but inspiring story of the Von Erich wrestling family, the film presents one of the darkest stories in the history of professional wrestling. What did we think of the story, how it was handled, the wrestling and its portrayal, the performances by the cast, and Durkin's direction? Tune in as we discuss these elements, its awards season chances, and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review. Thank you, and enjoy! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... During our Collider Ladies Night interview, Maura Tierney emphasized that the role of Doris in The Iron Claw “was not an easy role,” which is plain to see in the finished product for a multitude of reasons. Not only is the new A24 film based on a staggeringly tragic true story, but, as a supporting actor in the movie, Tierney is also in a position where she must justify a number of a significant choices her character makes within a high-pressure family dynamic with minimal screen time. She does just that in the movie, delivering a performance that's brimming with effective subtlety and subtext. The Iron Claw is inspired by the true story of the Von Erich family. They're Texas professional wrestling royalty with their sights set on rising even higher in the sport, a goal that's dashed by a string of deeply gut-wrenching personal tragedies. With The Iron Claw now playing in theaters nationwide, Tierney took the time to join me for a Collider Ladies Night interview to revisit her journey from early unforgettable credits including NewsRadio and ER to joining the cast of one of A24's most anticipated releases of the year.
