In Tabula Raza: Mapping Race and Human Diversity in American Genome Science (University of California Press, 2024), Duana Fullwiley has penned an intimate chronicle of laboratory life in the genomic age. She presents many of the influential scientists at the forefront of genetics who have redefined how we practice medicine and law and understand ancestry in an era of big data and waning privacy. Exceedingly relatable and human, the scientists in these pages often struggle for visibility, teeter on the tightrope of inclusion, and work tirelessly to imprint the future. As they actively imagine a more equal and just world, they often find themselves ensnared in reproducing timeworn conceits of race and racism that can seed the same health disparities they hope to resolve. Nothing dynamic can live for long as a blank slate, an innocent tabula rasa. But how the blank slate of the once-raceless human genome became one of racial differences, in various forms of what Fullwiley calls the tabula raza, has a very specific and familiar history--one that has cycled through the ages in unexpected ways. Duana Fullwiley is an anthropologist of science and medicine at Stanford University. She is the author of the award-winning book The Enculturated Gene: Sickle Cell Health Politics and Biological Difference in West Africa. Reighan Gillam is an Associate Professor in the Department of Latin American, Latino, and Caribbean Studies at Dartmouth College. Her research examines the ways in which Afro-Brazilian media producers foment anti-racist visual politics through their image creation. She is the author of Visualizing Black Lives: Ownership and Control in Afro-Brazilian Media (University of Illinois Press). Learn more about your ad choices. In today's episode I am joined by my dear friend, Dr. Duana Welch. Dt. Duana has been on the show a couple times, and today we are really focusing on dating advice after a gray divorce. We talk about why gray divorces are happening more often and what the reasons may be behind that. Dr. Duana educates us on what individualism is and how it impacts relationships. She then shares some advice on how to start dating after divorce, setting up your dating profile, and what things to look for in a future love in hopes that it'll last forever! Tune in to hear some great tips and learn more about love and lasting relationships. In this episode:[3:17] Dr. Duana Welch shares her story of finding love again after divorce.[5:37] Why are gray divorces happening more often?[10:41] Why has individualism started to develop in long term marriages?[11:40] What can someone do to prepare themselves for finding love later in life?[13:49] Are we less happy because of individualism? [18:35] What are the steps for a woman to find love?[29:31] A final piece of advice from the love doctor.Key Takeaways: Every year that a man is single, whether he's single because his wife died or because he never got married, or because he's divorced, or any combination of these, as soon as he's single, his odds of death from all known causes increases by a factor of six. This is not as high for women because they tend to have more social support.Science shows that when people are looking at dating apps, they'll likely swipe right on people who are 10% better looking than they are. The likelihood of you choosing who to date only based on looks won't lead you to matching with your perfect partner. Learning more about their character is more important than their looks. If you can find and be someone kind and respectful, your love life is going to go great. And if you can't, it will not.Quotes: “In an individualist society, people tend to have a longer strategy of adulthood. So what that means is they get married later and everything about their life happens a little bit later and there's just not the taboo about divorce that there used to be. So, I think those are a lot of the reasons why this phenomenon is happening, but I also know from research that we never stop needing love.” - Dr. Duana Welch"If you don't ever have to sign on for problems, then you probably aren't going to sign on for relationships because relationships bring joy, but they also bring challenges. What we need is not necessarily collectivist or individualist. We need interdependence. We need to find someone where we help each other feel safe enough where we can mutually depend on each other and we can mutually put the other person's needs co-equal with ours. In the absence of that, you're going to find a lot of unhappiness and even higher divorce rates.” - Dr. Duana Welch“Men routinely read women as interested in them who make full eye contact while smiling at them with a real eye crinkling smile.” - Dr. Duana WelchGuest Bio: Dr. Duana Welch (pronounced DWAY-nah) is known for dating advice, dating coaching, online dating coaching, relationship advice, relationship coaching, and marriage coaching that relies on science rather than opinion to help men and women find and keep the love of their lives. Susan, your host, welcomes Duana Welch to today's episode. Dr. Duana (pronounced DWAY-nah) is known for writing and dating coaching that relies on science rather than opinion to help men and women find and keep the love of their lives.   A former professor in Florida, California, and Texas for over 20 years, she has contributed to NPR, Psychology Today, and numerous other outlets and podcasts.   Her first book, Love Factually: 10 Proven Steps from I Wish to I Do, is now out globally in five languages; its revised and updated edition released in 2022. Love Factually for Single Parents: [& Those Dating Them] is the second book in the series, specifically geared toward finding the right partner not only for readers but their families.   She is an expert for Paired, the world's top-rated relationship app for couples. Her client practice is global via Zoom.   Key Takeaways: Dr. Duana discusses the cases of people who lost their spouses after a lifetime of dedication to that relationship and the challenge of dating again. People are not looking for the same things; not everyone on a dating app wants to find a partner. People sometimes act as if they want a relationship, but often, they don't even know what they are looking for; they might not even realize they are not presenting themselves honestly. Actions speak louder than words; check if people behave how they say they feel. Remember this question: “What is your end goal for the relationship?” (For yourself and others.) Learning how you show up in relationships and your attachment style are great tools to return to the dating field. Dr. Duana explains different attachment styles: Secure, Avoidant, Anxious, or Disorganized. Once a partner is deceased or there is a living former spouse, there are stakeholders (the children, the spouse, their parents, and friends are stakeholders). Most secure attachers can stay married for a lifetime; when their partners did not pass away, the reason for the separation can be their spouse, someone who behaves in a way that makes it impossible for a relationship to last. Dr. Duana walks the listeners to her steps when coaching her clients. Ask the hard questions first! Starting by having sex and seeing if feelings develop is really a recipe for disaster. Dr. Duana helps people navigate the online dating experience, realizing what is important, what to expect, and how not to waste time. Find someone who can understand that you will always love your deceased person. Dr. Duana leaves the audience with these wise words: If you can find and be someone kind and respectful, your relationship will likely go very well; if you can't, I promise it won't.   Resources Tendrilsofgrief.com Email Susan: susan@tendrilsofgrief.com If you find this episode helpful, please donate   Demon Copperhead, by Barbara Kingsolver Attached: The New Science of Adult Attachment and How It Can Help You Find — and Keep — Love, by Amir Levine, and Rachel Heller   Meet Dr. Duana Welch Love Science Media

My name is Duana Chandler. I am a wife and mom of a beautiful girl named Blaire. I am a Chemistry teacher, but sewing has been a major part of my life since I became a teacher. I learned how to sew in 2015, but stopped sewing soon after getting married. In 2018, I had my daughter. She was a major part of the reason that I started sewing again. She was born a micro preemie and was too small for the standard size preemie clothes, so I began to sew her clothes that fit. That reignited my passion for sewing. In 2019, I discovered an entire sewing community on social media and made a lot of new friendships. In 2020, I started learning about pattern design through online videos and through that, I released my first pattern. I have since released a total of 4 indie patterns on my Etsy shop. In 2022, I became a Know Me Pattern Designer under Mimi G and have since released two patterns. I have enjoyed the process. I have learned so much and I am continuing to learn and grow more as I go. USE CODE: SEWCIALHOUR30 to get 30% off any patterns in my Etsy Shop until June 30th, 2023 https://www.etsy.com/shop/duanastudioFollow Duana:Www.instagram.com/duana_m_chandlerWww.instagram.com/DuanastudioWww.linktr.ee/Duanastudio New this year in 2023: THIRSTY THURSDAY - Behind the scenes content to get to know us and our guests on a more personal level. Today on Doing Divorce Different, we hear Part 2 of our conversation with Love Doctor, Duana Welch. Duana discusses how to put together an ad for a dating site and spread the word that you are looking for love. She also digs in on the details of your must-have list and how to not settle for someone who doesn't meet your entire list. In this episode, she gives so many great tips on creating an enticing ad that reflects who you are and what you are genuinely looking for. Tune in as Duana gives us her best dating advice. In this episode: [00:50] The next step for finding love! [3:12] Showing your dating ad to your community of friends and family creates more eyes on finding someone for you. [5:47] What advice does Duana have for photos? [12:25] Prepare yourself before you post your ad. [15:46] How are you determining your “must-haves”? Key Takeaways: Take pictures that show you on a great day, but not on a glamor shot or with filters. Don't mislead people. The photos you use shouldn't be older than 6 months. Put the word FUN in your profile at least twice! If a quality in the person is a deal breaker, do not try to get over it. There's a reason you've been through a divorce, don't set yourself up for that again. Quotes: “Everyone thinks it's a numbers game; they get told it's a numbers game, it is not. It's a knowledge game. What do you know? If you know the right stuff and you can apply it, then it becomes about interacting with very few carefully chosen people.” - Duana Welch “Know your must-haves backward and forward and how you're going to assess them. That list is indispensable. If you try this without a list, you're going to get predictably terrible results most of the time. Do this with a list! And then you can say to yourself, is he kind? That's a must-have and should be on everybody's list. Is he kind? How do I assess that? I would ask him if your ex was here, what would she say was the reason for your divorce? And then I'm going to listen really carefully not only to what he says because that can give me some good insight into who he is and whether it'll work for me. Most people will give very different answers from what someone else says vs. what they'd say.” - Duana Welch Guest Bio: Dr. Duana Welch (pronounced DWAY-nah) is known for dating advice, dating coaching, online dating coaching, relationship advice, relationship coaching, and marriage coaching that relies on science rather than opinion to help men and women find and keep the love of their lives. Using her experience of finding love after divorce, she tells us how to get out there and find love again. Duana talks about the ten steps she has created to find a beautiful and solid relationship, also available in her book. It can feel intimidating to start dating and putting yourself out there again, but tune in to this episode for some great tips! In this episode: [1:19] What led Duana Welch to her Love Doctor role? [2:34] Duana gives us advice on how to start dating post-divorce. [7:48[ Duana talks about taking action to get out there, and their mindset will change as a result. [9:30] Duana takes us through the steps of her program to begin finding your match. [21:28] What should your ad look like on a dating app? Key Takeaways: Have the courage to look for someone. Put yourself into the dating market. Most people don't even look. Love is for those who have the courage to date. Create a list of everything you want in a partner, but be realistic. Do you have the same qualities that you are looking for in a partner? Sign up for one month only on dating apps. This tells the algorithm to keep pushing you to try and get you to sign up for another month. If you sign up for multiple, they won't keep pushing your profile after the first month. Quotes: “Who we love and how successful that relationship is, has more impact on our health, our wealth, our longevity, our career success, our life satisfaction, and even our sex life than any other choice we will make.” - Duana Welch “The first action I want people to take is to write down everything they want in a partner. Everything.” - Duana Welch Guest Bio: Dr. Duana Welch (pronounced DWAY-nah) is known for dating advice, dating coaching, online dating coaching, relationship advice, relationship coaching, and marriage coaching that relies on science rather than opinion to help men and women find and keep the love of their lives. Discussions of In The Heights focus on the star power of Anthony Ramos, the joy of summer in the city on a big screen -- and the fact that the actual Washington Heights is dominated by Afro-Latinx people, who don't have *any* presence in the film's many lead roles. It's not 'cancel culture' to discuss the casting decisions made by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Jon M Chu that got the film to this point. She became a single mother when her husband's addiction began to spiral.  Their son was born with a life-threatening disease, and she realized she couldn't trust her husband to administer the medication. So, she left and never came back. She had her child but nothing else. She left behind her job, home, friends, and the man she loved. Years later, Duana's life transformed, and she created a new life, but she never forgot how hard it was. If you've lost a relationship, feel lost, or want to find love, this episode is for you.  Dr. Duana Welch is an author and coach who applies social science to solve real-life relationship issues. She has walked through the fire and made it through.Kerry Brett and Duana Welch share lots of strategies and cover a lot of ground. Unbelievably, the best-ever 'concert' film - actually an intimate (if highly-produced) diary of Madonna at Peak Superstar -- is 30 years old. We discuss how it shaped a generation, what still resonates decades later, Madonna's strategic exhibition and exploitation of other people's stories (and the parts that were clearly not calculated), and why it marks a turning point for the way gay culture was seen in media. We also touch on the specific shame of our specific geographic connection to Truth or Dare's most embarrassing plotline...
