How does your top ten align with ours?
Join us and dive headfirst into the chaotic, brain-melting acid trip that is Lucy (2014), Luc Besson's cinematic fever dream starring Scarlett Johansson and Morgan Freeman. Right from the start, we knew we were in for it: bad science, a “sketch services” level plot, and the kind of dialogue that feels like it was written by a dolphin with a grudge. We got the whole gang together to dissect this mess with our usual irreverent flair, roasting everything from the film's lazy international logic to its “USB stick of universal knowledge” ending. Honestly, it was like watching 2001: A Space Odyssey if Kubrick had been blackout drunk and obsessed with PowerPoint transitions. As always, the chaos around the table was half the fun. We went full throttle into the ridiculousness of ScarJo turning into a floating Fred Astaire balloon, controlling time and matter with 20% of her brain (because science), and ultimately becoming “Wi-Fi with titties.” The callbacks and inside jokes were flying faster than Lucy's totally-not-real powers. Between wild tangents about dolphins, King of the Hill, and awkward animal mating montages, it was the most we've ever laughed at a movie that made us question our life choices. The frustration was real though. Dan, our resident physicist, compared the experience to “watching your grandparents get assaulted.” Elise gave us the all-time review of Lucy as “an acid trip with a science fair poster taped to it.” And Manny… well, Manny owned up to nominating this movie after loving it once while, let's say, chemically enhanced. Rewatching it sober? Not so much. We collectively agreed: Lucy was a one-time ride, and even that was one too many. But hey, if you love our affectionate chaos and want to hear us go fully unhinged on a movie that somehow made $469 million worldwide, this episode is an absolute banger. It's the perfect blend of exasperated movie talk, relentless roasting, and pure group therapy. Come for the dolphin trivia, stay for the unfiltered pain. You won't regret listening… just don't watch the movie.

Welcome back to Born to Watch, where this week the team tackles the endlessly rewatchable, criminally underappreciated Edge of Tomorrow (2014). Strap in as Whitey, Damo, and Dan on the Land gear up for a sci-fi action loop fest featuring Tom Cruise in one of his most against-type roles, Emily Blunt as a full-metal badass, and a time-travel plot that actually sticks the landing. Enjoy our Edge of Tomorrow (2014) Review! The boys jump right into the paradox-riddled battlefield, first marveling at how this epic blockbuster somehow bombed in the US, despite being everything a great action movie should be. They blame lousy marketing, title confusion (was it Live Die Repeat?), and the fact that in 2014, Cruise was still on Hollywood's naughty step thanks to Oprah's couch. But now? It's cult-classic gold.Whitey kicks off by calling out just how rare it is to see Cruise playing the weasel, Major Cage is an ad man thrown into combat, clueless and terrified. For Dan, this fish-out-of-water arc makes the movie shine, watching Cruise go from smug coward to unstoppable warrior. Damo agrees, even calling Edge of Tomorrow his number one Cruise performance, yep, he goes there.Emily Blunt earns unanimous praise as Rita Vrataski, the “Angel of Verdun” and all-around exosuit-slaying legend. She's fierce, stoic, and fit as hell, basically the action heroine we didn't know we needed in 2014. Her iconic push-up entrance gets a lot of airtime (and a few longing sighs), and the team agrees she holds her own, and then some, against Cruise. And what would a Born to Watch ep be without the usual blend of insight and irreverence? We get tangents on everything from duck anatomy (cloacas, anyone?) to Bill Paxton's legendary status as the only man killed by a Terminator, a Predator, and an Alien. The Paxton love is real. The pod dives into director Doug Liman's sharp visuals and crisp pacing, and shout out screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie, who somehow turns a convoluted time loop premise into a tight, clever, and emotional thrill ride. Liman's resume (Bourne Identity, Mr. & Mrs. Smith) gets the props it deserves, and there's a great sidebar on the upcoming Road House remake, complete with hot takes on Jake Gyllenhaal. As always, the “Hit, Sleeper, Dud” segment delivers, with Gone Girl getting the nod as a masterful hit, Kevin Costner's 3 Days to Kill as a solid sleeper, and Lucy (sorry, ScarJo) landing squarely in dud territory. Bonus points for Damo's vivid breakdown of Ben Affleck's infamous side-dick scene. The episode also features a glorious Cruise countdown. Each host reveals their top five Tom Cruise films, expect Jerry Maguire, Collateral, Top Gun: Maverick, and of course, Edge of Tomorrow, to make appearances. Damo even throws in Tropic Thunder, because who can forget Les Grossman? Then there's the philosophical stuff: How long was Cage actually in the time loop? (Answer: a hell of a long time). Was blackmailing the general really the best plan? (Debatable). And what's the real ending? (Whitey thinks it's Cruise's “now you're gonna bone me” smile).Oh, and voicemails are back! Listeners call in to rant about The Bodyguard, praise the pod's Whitney Houston renditions, and drop the occasional F-bomb. Classic Born to Watch fan energy.Listen now on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts!Join the conversation:Is Edge of Tomorrow Cruise's most underrated film? Would you waste 300 time loops trying to get with Emily Blunt? We've got a movie review! Mickey17 is out and I highly recommend it! Plus its a great placeholder before Verdansk returns to Warzone in a few weeks! In a world full of Oscar winners, there is also a large population of worthy performers who never had their own Academy Award moments. This week we welcome Miss Biz Sherbert and traverse the personal and cultural impact of Scarlett Johansson, perhaps the greatest sex symbol of the 21st century. We discuss the allure of pre-cultural fragmentation Hollywood, the coveted spot of Box Office Megastar X Indie Darling, and how the earthiness and wit that ScarJo pioneered got transmuted into a sarcastic hyper-relatability a la Jennifer Lawrence (shiver). We also explore what makes ScarJo distinct among the hoards of perky blondes we roll our eyes at (Reese Witherspoon, Blake Lively, Cameron Diaz, etc.), and question if a ScarJo “lineage” is even possible. Pivot is off for the holiday! In the meantime, we're bringing you an episode of On With Kara Swisher. Kara interviews Mira Murati, Chief Technology Officer at OpenAI, and one of the most powerful people in tech. Murati has helped the company skyrocket to the forefront of the generative AI boom, and Apple's recent announcement that it will soon put ChatGPT in its iPhones, iPads and laptops will only help increase their reach. But there have been some issues along the way - including CEO Sam Altman's brief ouster, accusations of putting profit over safety, and the controversy over whether the company stole Scarlett Johansson's voice. Kara and Murati discuss it all. This interview was recorded live at the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg Center in Washington, DC as part of their new Discovery Series. Murati has helped the company skyrocket to the forefront of the generative AI boom, and Apple's recent announcement that it will soon put ChatGPT in its iPhones, iPads and laptops will only help increase their reach. But OpenAI's rapid ascent has included its fair share of growing pains. There was “the blip,” as company insiders refer to the brief ousting of Sam Altman as CEO. (Murati became CEO for two days.) There have also been high-profile departures, an open letter accusing the company of putting product over safety, questions about highly restrictive NDAs, and even controversy over whether the company had stolen Scarlett Johansson's voice. On top of that, many fear that generative AI tools, like ChatGPT, will be used to fuel disinformation during the upcoming presidential election. Kara and Murati talk about all this, and more. On this week's show, the hosts begin by jumping into Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, a prequel to George Miller's 2015 Fury Road, in which Anya Taylor-Joy stars as Furiosa, an arachnid beauty who's stolen as a child and becomes a wasteland road warrior. She's a “strong, silent type,” typical of the action film genre, but does that trope mean something different with a female protagonist in 2024? The panel discusses. (Read Dana's review of Furiosa!) Then, the three chat Hit Man, Richard Linklater's latest starring Glen Powell as Gary Johnson, a college professor who moonlights as a fake gunman for hire. It's a delightful rom-com tucked within a thriller—a romantic thriller, if you will–that manages to feel like a hangout film despite its ridiculous premise. (Read Dana's review of Hat Man!) Finally, ScarJo or FauxJo? Tech journalist and author of Blood in the Machine: The Origins of the Rebellion Against Big Tech Brian Merchant joins the panel to parse through Silicon's Valley's latest scandal: Scarlett Johansson accusing ChatGPT of stealing her voice for its new interface program. Proceeding without permission is a time-tested practice in some corners of Silicon Valley. Well, it’s not working out so well for OpenAI. Actress Scarlett Johansson said this week the company approached her twice to voice a new AI assistant for ChatGPT-4o. She declined, only to find it had used a voice that sounds “eerily” like hers. Plus, on Capitol Hill, a House subcommittee held a hearing that could decide the future of Section 230, the provision that largely governs the internet today. We’ll explain why chatbots have entered the chat on Section 230’s future. But first, a new report by former tech company officials and academic researchers finds far-right extremist militias are once again organizing on Facebook ahead of November’s presidential election. They recommend platforms ramp up content moderation to avoid fueling political violence. Marketplace's Lily Jamali is joined by Maria Curi, tech policy reporter at Axios, for her take on this week's tech news. Our May fundraiser ends Friday, and we need your help to reach our goal. Give today and help fund public service journalism for all!

Plus, the California Senate passed an AI bill that looks pretty bad for now but Anthropic actually learned something about the black box that is AI so…that's good? Microsoft's Satya Nadella made moves at their big Microsoft Build 2024 event & introduced a ton of new AI innovations that would leave even Steve Ballmer himself sweatier than usual. Also, Humane seems like it might be toast after seeking out offers to buy it, we love a cool hacked together Google Gemini-powered SuperMario tutorial, Gavin got sometime with the ChatGPT app for Mac & Kevin walks us through how he used GPT-4o to code a voice app using our first AI co-host GASH. Speaking of co-hosts, we're joined by a very special guest: A terrible AI rendition of Arnold Schwarzenegger. He gives us his thoughts on the ScarJo mess and then absolutely loses his mind. There are only 2 stories today, but they're big ones. First, at an event yesterday, Microsoft showed off what they want the PC to look like in the AI era. Plus, this Recall app is super interesting. Then, look, it's the Scarlett Johansson/OpenAI thing. It's gotten weird. And more importantly, it's continuing to highlight how OpenAI itself is… weird.Sponsors:Miro.com for 3 free boards!Links:The new, faster Surface Pro is Microsoft's all-purpose AI PC (The Verge)Microsoft announces an Arm-powered Surface Laptop (The Verge)Microsoft unveils Copilot+ PCs with generative AI capabilities baked in (Engadget)Recall is Microsoft's key to unlocking the future of PCs (The Verge)Scarlett Johansson says she was 'shocked, angered' when she heard OpenAI's voice that sounded like her (NBCNews)Midler v.
