To say that Erica Arvold is passionate about what she does is an understatement.  Most actors know her as a casting director but, as she likes to point out, she is so much more than that.  She is a producer, a director, and a committed educator.  But one of the things that I most appreciate about Erica is how she loves learning about other people.  If you’ve auditioned for Erica you know that during Covid she started the 30 second stories where actors got to share 30 seconds about themselves that was not related to acting.  And at the end of our conversation, she asked me a question.  That has never happened.  Now you won’t hear that part as I edited it out because the podcast is not about me.  What it did show is that, for Erica, it is as much about the other person as it is about herself.  I hope you enjoy my conversation with Erica Arvold as much as I did.  Erica Arvold, owner and CEO of Arvold, has spent 30 years as a casting director, educator, speaker, producer, writer, director and an advocate for screen artists. Erica has contributed to, participated in, or helmed the making of over 140 films, 85 television shows, and countless multimedia & commercial projects.  Casting credits include The Black Phone, Red Notice, Dopesick, Swagger, The Good Lord Bird, House of Cards, Charm City Kings, Harriet, and Lincoln. Erica directed the short films Thursday and Here Today, for which she won ‘Best First Time Director’ at Indie Short Fest Los Angeles. She has served as a producer on projects including Coming Through the Rye, Elemental, House Hunting, Josephine, Texas Rein, Time Machine Guitar, and Wish You Well. She has been nominated for CSA’s Artios Award five times, inducted into First Lady of Virginia’s Opportunity Hall of Fame for contributing to the economic growth in the state. In 2010, Erica founded Arvold.Education to cultivate artistic growth in actors and filmmakers, which quickly expanded into offering classes for all humans. Being real.” “Take what’s on the page and make it your own. Be creative.” “We want to see what you can do with that material that’s different than the other 59 people who just left my office.” “Read the scene over and over again… each time you read it, you see something you didn’t see before.” “Drama is passion. Drama comes from the heart.” “Comedy is a rhythm.” “Don’t chew gum, don’t wear hats, don’t wear sunglasses, don’t use props.” “Send a few takes of each scene to your agent or manager, and let them choose what they like.” “Each project is different. Each producer is different. Each role is different. Keep going in, they want to see you because they like you.” “If this is what you really want, don’t stop.” “Make sure whatever you put on your resume is accurate.” “Be yourself. Don’t try to be cool, because being cool is not going to get you the job.”   Follow Harriet Greenspan here:   Website: http://www.harrietgreenspan.com Email: harrietgreenspancasting@gmail.com Facebook: @HarrietGreenspanCSA   Buy her book here: Auditionology

Lisa shares advice for actors on auditions, how to succeed in the industry, how to get on the radar of a casting director even if you don’t yet have an agent, and much more. She is a passionate advocate for actors, and the dedication comes through in this very generous interview.   Some of my favorite quotes from our conversation:   “Part of what we look for as casting directors is not only your talent, but your personality.” “I don’t ever tell actors, or their parents, ‘you have to move here right away.’ Work in your local market and gain some credits there.” “When you come into a casting room, be a PERSON. I’m looking for the whole package.” “Do your homework. The more you know, the better you do.” “Part of the reason actors don’t get callbacks is they don’t take direction.” “You have to make a choice. But you can’t get so stuck in your choice that you can’t change.” “I think Improv is super important. It’s a great training ground for all actors.” “My job is the find the talent for film and TV shows, and to facilitate the producer/director’s vision.” “We see potential in actors. And we have to sometimes convince other people of that potential.” “For every no, there’s a yes.” “I put Jennifer Aniston in her first movie, Leprochaun… we cast Yara Shahidi in her first series.” “Do you know how many times we’ve met somebody and said, ‘They’re not exactly right for this, but we’re going to put them in a different part, or a different project’?” The fun of casting for me, is I get to meet you, see your personality, work with you, and direct you.” “Create! Make stuff! Do stuff! You have to stay proactive.” Don’t coach your kids.” “If this is your dream and your passion, you have to persist… no matter what happens, you can’t give up. That door is going to open for you.”     Follow Lisa London here:   Website: http://londonstroudcasting.com/ Instagram: @LisaLondonCasting Twitter: @LLondonCasting Facebook: @London/StroudCasting    Buy her book here: From Start to Stardom   The Backstage Article Lisa wrote and referenced: 4 Reasons You Didn’t Get a Callback   There is so much you can do to prepare for a successful acting career right where you are today. “From an actor's perspective...you have to be prepared for it to be really hard because there's so many factors that are influencing why you get a role and why you don't get a role. When you go into an audition, leave it in the room— otherwise it's too hard on your heart. And getting into those rooms is also tough, but you should try every avenue you can find and think of.” -Mary Vernieu This week’s guest is the incredibly smart and accomplished casting director Mary Venieu. Some of her recent casting credits include Euphoria, A Star Is Born, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and Hobbs & Shaw. She repeatedly works with some of my favorite directors including Darren Aronofsky, Robert Rodriguez, and our friend Rian Johnson. She casted me in Rian’s movie Looper, and also casted the movie I wrote and directed: Don Jon. Mary is incredibly talented at what she does, which made her perfect to answer  this week’s question from Monica Patricio from Lima, Peru.  Monica asked, ““How much do contacts matter when starting a project or career?” There’s a common perception that casting directors serve as gatekeepers to the industry, and I think this is partially true. Mary and I did our best to have an honest conversation about the reality of casting, and I think this episode offers some practical takeaways for those of you out there who are thinking about having a career in a creative field. We talked about how casting directors go about finding actors for their movies, the importance of having a good agent, and how the industry is shifting in terms of diversity and inclusion. If you have a question about the creative process that you think would spawn a good conversation on this show, ask me on Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter tagged #creativeprocessing, or by emailing creativeprocessing@hitrecord.org. New episodes are coming out every Tuesday through October 22, 2019. ------ ABOUT THE GUESTS: Casting Director Mary Vernieu has cast over 300 features during her career. With an eye for talent in both actors and filmmakers, she has developed and enjoyed long-standing working relationships with many acclaimed directors such as Darren Aronofsky, David Ayer, David O. Russell, Robert Rodriguez, Rian Johnson, and Oliver Stone.  In 2013 Mary won an Artios Award for the casting of Silver Linings Playbook, and was nominated for two more Artios Awards last year for A Star Is Born and Deadpool II.  In addition to her casting work, Mary has also recently ventured into producing for such films as Trust Me, Come Simi, and Spare Room. Mary’s company, Betty Mae, is named in a loving homage to her mother and grandmother. ------ SELECTED LINKS FOR EPISODE: Connect with Mary:Facebook: @BettymaecastingInstagram: @BettymaecastingMovies Mentioned:Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (2019)John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum (2019)A Star Is Born (2018)Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017)Knives Out (2019)Looper (2012)JFK (1991)Don Jon (2013)No Time to Die (2020)TV Shows Mentioned:Euphoria (HBO, 2019)Fleabag (BBC, 2016-2019)Atlanta (FX, 2016- )Killing Eve (BBC, 2018- )People Mentioned:Darren Aronofsky (Filmmaker)Robert Rodriguez (Filmmaker)Rian Johnson (Filmmaker)Justin Bieber (Singer)Andrew Bachelor a.k.a King Bach (Actor)Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Actress / Writer / Producer)Casting Terminology / Services Mentioned:Breakdown ServicesFILM SIDES: Pages of a script used in an auditionSHOWCASE: Show where actors perform monologues, scenes, or songs in front of industry professionals

Mad Men & Parenthood's Emmy-Award-Winning Casting Director, Carrie Audino

Carrie Audino won a Primetime Emmy in 2010 for Casting the critically-acclaimed series, Mad Men.  She was nominated another 5 times.  She also won the Artios Award, presented by the Casting Society of America and was nominated another 4 times, one of which was for her work casting the pilot of NBC's critically-acclaimed series, Parenthood.  But for all of the accolades, she is a workhorse, a grinder who feels compelled to "get it right" when it comes to choosing the right actor for the role, even if she ruffles some feathers along the way.  A no-nonsense, straight-talking tough chick from New Jersey, Carrie was an actor herself, having gone through the prestigious program at the Tisch school of NYU.  But, like so many other guests of 10,000 "No"s, Audino pivoted when she realized she felt more joy and gratification from casting than being cast.  Already juggling her demanding career with motherhood, she's now adding yet another title to her impressive resume, with the upcoming launch of her own podcast, "It's Not Personal", where she'll go in depth with well-known actors about their experiences being cast throughout their careers.    SHOWNOTES:  The experience of winning an Emmy, (4:08). Having a little baby during Mad Men, (6:17). What it's like to be a casting director, (8:25). “They don’t have to be good all the time. I think actors believe they have a bad day and they’re out. It’s a mutual relationship.”, (9:38). Audino’s upcoming podcast, “It’s Not Personal”, (10:28) Possessing qualities to be a good casting director, (12:15). Carrie's past acting experience prior to being a casting director, (13:00). When she was acting at NYU: “I was always thinking like a casting person without knowing it.”, (16:25). Interning at Liz Lewis Casting Partners, (17:00). Feeling relief after realizing she did not want to pursue acting, (17:52). Beginning to cast on her own in New York, (19:50). Moving out to California for work, (20:23). Growing up as an old soul, (22:10). “I was working 6 days a week, 18 hours a day. I loved it. I loved working hard.”, (23:30). Managing work and personal life, (25:19). “Socializing and small talk is hard. I don’t love it. I’d like to have a real conversation.”, (27:41). Hardships with moving back to New York for 2 years, (29:50). Landing the Angel’s Eyes pilot with Laura Schiff in LA before deciding to fully pursue culinary school, (30:45). The most rewarding thing as a casting director, (34:02). “I’m the person who shuts tests down. I’m the person that’s like ‘I don’t care if we shut down. Let’s make it right.’”, (35:00). Frustration with not having control, (37:02). Not taking a hard “No”, (39:25).    LINKS:  IMDB -   https://www.google.com/search q=Carrie+audino&oq=carrie+audino&aqs=chrome.0.69i59j69i60j69i65j69i60j69i65l2.1393j0j1&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8  Emmys - https://www.emmys.com/bios/carrie-audino  Casting “Mad Men” Backstage Article - https://www.backstage.com/magazine/article/casting-directors-laura-schiff-carrie-audino-create-mad-men-13824/  Casting Directors List-   https://castingdirectorslist.com/whoswho/schiffaudino-casting/    RELATED PAST EPISODES OF 10,000 “No”s:  Jennifer Todd - https://www.10000nos.com/episodes/ep-61-elite-hollywood-producer-jennifer-todd    Hot Seat with Matt - https://www.10000nos.com/episodes/ep-27-growing-up-del-negro-our-host-in-the-hot-seat    Mark Duplass - https://www.10000nos.com/episodes/ep-43mark-duplass-just-shoot-it?rq=MARK%20DUPLASS   If you like what you hear, please Subscribe, leave an iTunes review and spread the word.
