Are the hard sciences the only source of truth about reality? On this episode of ID the Future from the archive, host Michael Keas begins a conversation with philosopher J. P. Moreland about Moreland's book Scientism and Secularism: Learning to Respond to a Dangerous Ideology. As Moreland explains, scientism is the belief that only the hard sciences can provide any reliably true knowledge. It's a claim that also gets applied to other disciplines outside science as well, suggesting that claims of reality in any field of human knowledge cannot be known one way or another. “It's in the drinking water,” Moreland says, but it's also self-refuting, and therefore irrational — and very damaging besides. Moreland gives examples. This is Part 1 of a conversation. Source
My guest today is Jonathan Morrow. Jonathan has been equipping students and parents in biblical worldview, apologetics, and culture for over 16 years, and is passionate about seeing a new generation build a lasting faith. He holds graduate degrees in Christian thought and is currently the Director of Cultural Engagement and Student Discipleship at the Impact 360 Institute and an adjunct professor of apologetics at Biola University. Jonathan has authored several books, including Welcome to College, Questioning the Bible, and Is God Just a Human Invention? His book Welcome to College is the best book I've seen to help students flourish during their university years. So I've invited him to discuss some of the ideas in this book with me today. In this podcast we discuss: The five ideas defining campus culture* today and how to identify and respond to them (*and broader culture) Understanding “Sexual Revolution 2.0” and how to reframe these issues How some churches are embracing these harmful ideas (and some authors promoting these ideas) “Deconstructing” faith Dealing with the three types of doubt Examples of students who have flourished due to the principles in Welcome to College Some problems students face when not understanding the truths in Welcome to College The importance of choosing friends wisely The fallacy of assuming your Christian upbringing prepares you for college The three biblical ways to flourish in college Resources mentioned during our conversation: Jonathan Morrow, Welcome to College: A Christ-Follower's Guide for the Journey Impact 360 Institute Alisa Childers, Another Gospel? We're called to be Ambassador's for Christ (2 Cor 5:20) but how can we do that well if we don't know how to respond to the most common objections that the world has? In Round #1 of Ambassador Training, we'll look at each of the following objections to Christianity: Relativism - "There is no such thing as absolute truth. You have yours and I have mine." Pluralism - "All paths lead to God, there is more than one correct way." Scientism - "Only science yields truth; religion is merely a matter of opinion." In this week's episode Daniel Ray and Dr. Luke Barnes conclude their discussion of the question "What is Scientism?" Science is fully compatible with the Christian worldview and for the most part has done much to expand knowledge and in most cases provided tremendous progress in advancing human wellbeing and flourishing. There is, however, a controversial philosophy of science that seems to be growing in popularity that can be called Scientism. In part two of their conversation, Daniel and Luke critique some assumptions and draw some conclusions on and questions raised by Scientism: Must science and religion be seen as in conflict? Has science disproven the existence of God? Is science the best or even only way to know truth? For anything to be true, does it have to be observable, testable, repeatable and peer reviewed? Luke A. Barnes is a theoretical astrophysicist, cosmologist, and postdoctoral researcher at Western Sydney University. He received his PhD in Astronomy from the University of Cambridge in 2009. He is a John Templeton Fellow. He has published papers in the fields of galaxy formation and the fine-tuning of the Universe for life. John Stonestreet and Warren Smith discuss the two Democratic debates and just how far left these presidential candidates are willing to go. Also on today's episode: U. S. women's soccer star Jaelene Hinkle left off the World Cup squad because of her outspoken Christian beliefs; Aussie rugby star Israel Folau banned from rugby for telling homosexuals to repent; why are young people (known for their tolerance) less accepting of the LGBT lifestyle than they were just a few years ago? And finally, John and Warren discuss great resources for you to understand and refute the very unscientific ideology of scientism. Resources The U. S. Christian faith and science are often viewed as being in conflict in Western culture today. It’s important to understand that science is practiced within a worldview—a specific way of viewing the world, especially what counts for knowledge. Increasingly, people believe that the only things that count for real knowledge are those that can be scientifically verified. Scott and Sean interview Talbot philosopher JP Moreland about his new book, Scientism and Secularism: Learning to Respond to a Dangerous Ideology. Dr. Moreland will connect faith and science in a way consistent with a Christian worldview. [Show notes, including a full transcript, are available at www.biola.edu/thinkbiblically]
