Patrick discusses a hot topic about the former president of Harvard, Claudine Gay, and her recent resignation amidst allegations of plagiarism. Patrick and a caller delve into a thought-provoking discussion about the infusion of souls in identical twins, drawing on their beliefs and questioning the possibilities. The conversation raises intriguing points about conjoined twins and leaves listeners pondering the transcendence of God and the complexities of the human spirit. Pat (email) – The Harvard President has stepped down Patrick comments on accusations of Claudine Gay's plagiarism Joe - I think when the ovum splits is when the second soul is given, because that's when God would give us a guardian angel. Kathy - I'm struggling with the Mariology of the Church. 1) Where in the bible did it say that Mary was born without sin? 2) In Matthew's genealogy, he ends with Joseph, not Mary. Why? (20:15) Clare - When I was confirmed, I wasn't given a confirmation name. (29:34) Ann - I have a 23-year old niece who has moved to London and fallen away from the Church. I messaged her that I hope she would return to the Church. She responded: “I am very glad that you have found a place in Catholicism. I don't feel I have a place.” How should I respond? Patrick recommends “Tactics: A Game Plan for Discussing Your Christian Convictions” by Gregory Koukl Kent - I went to confession after 50 years because of Patrick's encouragement! The confession was a letdown. There were no prayers, and no act of contrition. I did name some sins, but I didn't have a chance to name all my sins. Did it count? (42:36)

Apologist Greg Koukl of Stand to Reason provides an overview of the "Columbo Tactic" and how it can help you stay in the driver's seat in challenging conversations. The "Columbo" tactic, named after the TV detective, is a strategic approach for introducing spiritual topics into conversations through simple, leading questions. It involves asking open-ended, inquisitive questions like "What do you mean by that?" to gently steer the conversation towards spirituality. The tactic aims to expose flaws or contradictions in others' views in a non-confrontational manner. For instance, following up with "How did you come to that conclusion?" respects the other person's reasoning and encourages them to articulate their beliefs, providing more insight for further discussion. Even when faced with responses lacking clear reasoning, the Columbo tactic uses straightforward, relevant questions to provoke thought, emphasizing the importance of having reasons for one's beliefs. This method highlights the power of asking well-placed questions to facilitate deeper, more meaningful conversations about spiritual matters.▶ Watch the full conversation: https://youtu.be/CZrApYwhP7Y
I. Meta-Apologetics A. Apologetics: Defending the Christian worldview as objectively true, compellingly rational, and existentially pertinent to the whole of life (1 Peter 3:15-6; Jude 3) B. Meta-apologetics: thoughts about how to engage in apologetics, strategies and values. II. The Christian Apologist's Moral Compass A. All are called to check their moral motives and develop godly characterI strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize (2 Corinthians 9:27).Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers (1 Timothy 4:16).B. Yearn for Kingdom ministry (Matthew 6:33) C. Put yourself second to the ministry; do not promote your brand or ego! Let others compliment you. III. Godly Character A. Humility, not self-promotionThis is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief (1 Timothy 1:5; KJV; see also 1 Corinthians 15:9). B. Show love, not strifeAnd the Lord's servant must not be quarrelsome but must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful. Opponents must be gently instructed, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth, and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will (2 Timothy 2:24-26).C. Dependence on the Spirit moment-by-moment (John 15; Acts 1:8). See Francis Schaeffer, True Spirituality. D. Intellectual preparation for apologetics 1. Know your Bible (Psalm 119; 2 Timothy 3:16) and biblical interpretation (2 Peter 3:16) 2. Know biblical and systematic theology to ground your worldview (Acts 17:10-11) 3. Know logic and logical fallacies; how to argue carefully and assess arguments carefully (2 Corinthians 10:3-5) 4. Know your own culture: worldviews and means of communication (technologies) Issachar, men who understood the times and knew what Israel should do (1 Chronicles 12:32). 5. Be above reproach in citing your sources in speaking and writing (Exodus 20:15) 6. Behind all these six principles is the importance of being studious, a good scholar Not only was the Teacher wise, but he also imparted knowledge to the people. He pondered and searched out and set in order many proverbs. The Teacher searched to find just the right words, and what he wrote was upright and true (Ecclesiastes 12:9-10; see 1:17; 8:9, 16).I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, I too decided to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught (Luke 1:3-4; see also John 21:24). IV. Opportunity and Uncertainty in Apologetics A. Break new ground! It has always been my ambition to preach the gospel where Christ was not known, so that I would not be building on someone else's foundation—Romans 15:20). B. Ecclesiastes 11:1-6 Cast your bread upon the waters,For you will find it after many days.Give a serving to seven, and also to eight,For you do not know what evil will be on the earth. If the clouds are full of rain,They empty themselves upon the earth; And if a tree falls to the south or the north,In the place where the tree falls, there it shall lie.He who observes the wind will not sow,And he who regards the clouds will not reap.As you do not know what is the way of the wind,[a]Or how the bones grow in the womb of her who is with child,So you do not know the works of God who makes everything. In the morning sow your seed,And in the evening do not withhold your hand; For you do not know which will prosper,Either this or that,Or whether both alike will be good (NKJV). C. Calculate effort in relation to effect and chances of success. D. Embrace unexpected opportunities. 1. Paul at Mars Hill (Acts 16-17): unscheduled mission trip before imposing intellectuals. 2. Paul to Timothy Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine—2 Timothy 4:2 (KJV). V. My Apologetic Surprises, Successes, and Failures A. Surprise: Lecturing at a Baha'i meeting B. Successful attempts 1. Writing On Pascal and On Jesus 2. Doing author events for two of my books at a local bookstore in Denver. Another one flopped (Fire in the Streets). C. Unsuccessful attempts 1. Debate with James K. A. Smith 2. Doing a Buddhist-Christian dialogue at Naropa University (Boulder, CO) 3. Secular publisher for Philosophy in Seven Sentences VI. Attempts, Failures, and Successes before God A. Seek God's Kingdom first, last, and always (Matthew 6:33) B. Remember the audience of a holy God Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter:Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind. For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil—Ecclesiastes 12:13-14.Resources1. In this episode we are discussing an idea every student is sure to encounter early and repeatedly during the college years-- the idea of “relativism.” My guest is Greg Koukl, co-author of Relativism: Feet Firmly Planted in Mid-Air and the Founder/President of Stand to Reason, a great apologetics ministry. In this podcast we discuss: The prevalence of relativism on campus today (often seen as “expressive individualism”) Some different forms of relativism students will encounter Greg's “inside/outside” distinction, which goes back to the Garden of Eden and the Fall How relativism is related to the idea of “truth” Why Christians should not talk about “their faith” Why we can know “that” something is true without knowing “how” it is true Why no one is actually a relativist, and how to help a “relativist” see this How to ask good questions as a way to engage in conversations about relativism (and everything else--”gardening” vs. “harvesting”) Understanding and discussing the new/current definition of “tolerance” Responding to relativism on campus (with friends, in classes, in papers, etc.) The importance of finding common ground in conversations The value of using this dialogical approach to defend all Christian truth claims Resources mentioned during our conversation: Greg Kokhl, Street Smarts: Using Questions to Answer Chrisitanity's Toughest Challenges J. Welcome to the sixth and final episode in this new mini-series, Junior Doctor Foundations, released as part of CMF's 1st incision podcast. This mini-series of six episodes focuses on thriving as a Christian junior doctor living and working in a culture described as a ‘Digital Babylon'. Life in the twenty-first century is accelerated and more complex than ever before. As Christians, especially junior doctors, it can feel like we are exiles living in a culture hostile to our faith. So how might we keep running the race of faith despite all the challenges? Today we are unpacking the topic of countercultural mission and asking, ‘What really matters in life?' and ‘What counts for a life well lived?'. Your host is Lizzy Kennedy (a junior doctor based in Devon); she is joined by John Greenall (a Paediatrician and CMF Associate CEO) and Felicia Wong (a GP and CMF Head of Doctor's Ministries).Faith for Exiles: This podcast series is inspired by the book Faith for Exiles. Written by members of the Barna Research Group who have interviewed around 100,000 young adults, it focuses on what we can learn from the practices of those young people who have kept going with their faith. To find out more about the book Faith for Exiles, check out faithforexiles.com You can find more about the CMF research on this topic here at cmf.li/ResilientDisciple Resource recommendations: Further information about the CMF resources John mentioned can be found at: cmf.org.uk‘Tactics: A Game Plan for Discussing Your Christian Convictions', a book by Greg Koukl LICC: licc.org.uk/ OCCA: theocca.org/ Evangelical Alliance: eauk.org/ CMF pastoral support: Find out more about CMF's support for junior doctors at cmf.org.uk/juniors/ Email address: wellbeing@cmf.org Support the show

Do you want to know how to explain (or defend) your faith with greater confidence and clarity? Join the club. This is an area called “apologetics.” Greg Koukl has written a helpful and insight book on the topic. In fact, it has sold more than 300,000 copies! It is called ‘Tactics: A Game Plan for Discussing Your Christian Convictions.’ This episode of The Word at Westminster (cross-posted from ‘The Pulse Podcast with Matthew Ruttan’) is a talk with Greg Koukl. A range of topics are discussed (see full list below), but there is a focus on some of the critical issues in apologetics such as knowing the reason for your hope, thinking clearly, and getting confident. But first let us tell you a bit more about our guest. Greg holds MA degrees in both apologetics and philosophy. He's spoken on over 80 university campuses and has hosted his own radio talk show for 33 years defending “Christianity worth thinking about.” He is the founder and president of Stand to Reason and serves as adjunct professor of Christian apologetics at Biola University. William Craig Lane says about his book: “tactics will make you a more effective ambassador for Christ.” In the forward to this book, Lee Strobel (author of the best selling ‘The Case for Christ,’ says: “We live in a day when militant atheism is on the march… Let Greg be your mentor as you master new approaches to talking with others about Jesus. As Greg likes to say, “You don't need to hit home runs. You don't even need to get on base. Although apologetics sounds like a scary topic, it's very simple. It is providing evidence for a belief and then explaining why that belief is reasonable. Let's take a look together at how we can dig deeper into finding out the WHY to our faith. We may know what we believe, but do we know why we believe it? Can we explain why it's true?Resources:Alisa Childers has a blog, book, and podcast. Today on Educate For Life, Kevin interviews Greg Koukl. Greg started out thinking he was too smart to become a Christian and ended up giving his life for the defense of the Christian faith. A central theme of Greg's speaking and writing is that Christianity—if it's properly understood and properly communicated—makes the most sense of the world as we find it. Greg is the author of Tactics: A Game Plan for Discussing Your Christian Convictions. In a world increasingly indifferent to Christian truth, followers of Christ need to be equipped to communicate with those who do not speak their language or accept their source of authority. In Tactics, 10th Anniversary Edition, Gregory Koukl demonstrates how to artfully regain control of conversations, keeping them moving forward in constructive ways through thoughtful diplomacy. You'll learn how to stop challengers in their tracks and how to turn the tables on questions or provocative statements. Most important, you'll learn how to get people thinking about Jesus. Tactics provides the game plan for communicating the compelling truth about Christianity with confidence and grace. Tune in for a great conversation and learn different tactics for how to share your faith. Check out https://www.str.org/ to purchase the book or just find out more information. Solomon once said that of the writing of books, there is no end. The sheer number of books available online today is overwhelming, and there's nothing worse than wasting time or money on a terrible book. A helpful clue to reveal the quality of a book is whether or not it has stood the test of time. Another indicator, though not nearly as reliable, is how many have sold. On both of these counts, the book “Tactics: A Game Plan for Discussing Your Christian Convictions” by my friend Greg Koukl, passes with flying colors. In fact, it's sold so well for so long, “Tactics” is now available in an expanded and updated 10th anniversary edition. I have long regarded the original edition of “Tactics” as one of the best resources ever produced to equip Christians to engage in tough conversations with skeptics and unbelievers. While plenty of books tell us what to say on tough topics, this book is training on how to have the conversation. The title says it all: “Tactics.” The expanded tenth anniversary edition, with several new chapters and updated examples that take into account the ways our culture has changed since 2009, means that this edition supplants the old one as one of the best resources ever produced to equip Christian to engage in tough conversations with skeptics and unbelievers—and, by the way, even with fellow believers who might be fuzzy on the key teachings of our faith. According to Koukl, “representing Christ in any era requires three skills.” First, we need a “basic knowledge necessary for the task.” This means knowing the central message of God's kingdom and “knowing something about how to respond to the obstacles [believers will] encounter on their mission.” By itself, however, knowledge isn't enough. “Our knowledge must be tempered with the wisdom that makes our message clear and persuasive.” As Greg puts it, “we need tools of a diplomat, not the weapons of a warrior.” Finally, we must not forget that this knowledge and wisdom “are packaged in a Person.” If we don't embody the virtues of Christ, we will undermine our message and attempts to share it. Koukl's book is especially helpful on the second of these necessary skills: tactical wisdom, or the skills necessary in both how to speak about our faith and how to constructively and conversationally listen. This is the tactical game plan to “artfully manage the details of our dialogues with others.” Let me be clear: This book doesn't teach conversational manipulation, or how to “own” someone. It's not even about how to “win” a debate, and it certainly won't equip you to embarrass or humiliate anyone. None of these things properly represent the goal of Christian conversation and witness. The goal, Koukl insists, is to find a way to expose “someone's bad thinking for the purpose of guiding her to truth” in a “gracious and charitable” manner. To do that, Koukl teaches what he calls “the Columbo tactic,” named after a famous 1970s TV detective. This involves asking a series of questions in order to gather information and define the terms of our discussion. For example, “What do you mean by that?” and, because Christians are not the only ones who need to give reasons for what we believe, “How did you come to that conclusion?” Koukl calls this strategy “reversing the burden of proof.” These kinds of leading questions can help the person we're conversing with reach the appropriate conclusion on their own. Perhaps the most helpful aspect of the book are the stories. When Koukl shares the real-life conversations he's had and how he has employed the tactics, it makes you think, “Oh, I can do that, too.” The kind of practical wisdom he offers is more vital today, ten years after he first offered the book “Tactics,” than ever before. We will send you a copy for your next gift of any amount to the Colson Center. And, if you need more convincing, listen to my podcast interview with Greg Koukl. In just the past decade, the entire Christian understanding of reality has been discarded by the culture: how God made the world, what it means to be human, what marriage means, what sex is for. Everything is on the table. Which is why today on the BreakPoint Podcast, John Stonestreet is excited to talk with Greg Koukl about the just-released 10th anniversary edition of Koukl's outstanding book, “Tactics: A Game Plan for Discussing Your Christian Convictions.” As you will hear on the Podcast, John believes “Tactics” to be one of the best resources ever produced to equip Christians to engage in constructive conversations about faith and the controversial issues of our day. It's a little late to still be doing Christmas shopping (like I am), especially for anything that needs to be shipped. Even so, books that pass on Christian worldview are worth the hassle, and I've got four to recommend for you this Christmas. In fact, you might want to self-gift some of these… The first is the best book I know of that teaches the “how” of communication in a tough culture: “Tactics: A Game Plan for Discussing Your Christian Convictions” by my friend Greg Koukl. Every Christian needs this book because every Christian, in this day and age, will find themselves in conversations about controversial topic, called upon to defend their beliefs, and even Christianity itself. “Tactics” teaches, well, tactics. In other words, this book gives you the rhetorical strategies you need to speak up in such a way as to generate light, not heat. If you're thinking, “Wait, hasn't that book been out for a while?” Yes, it has. Ten years, in fact. And now, it's been expanded and re-released in a 10th- anniversary edition. This edition not only has updated stories of Greg's tactics in action (which are very helpful), it has more tactics. Honestly, I didn't think this book could really be improved, but Greg has. He and I discussed the book on the BreakPoint podcast at BreakPoint.org. As I told Greg, the book should come with a warning: Anyone who reads it no longer has an excuse for not sharing their beliefs and convictions, even on the tough topics. The second book is for children, especially for little girls: Rachael Denhollander's “How Much Is a Little Girl Worth?” Denhollander, as you might remember, is the force of nature that bravely and persistently worked to expose the hundreds of cases of abuse by U.S.A. Gymnastics doctor Larry Nasser. Rachael Denhollander understands that in a culture that victimizes little girls in so many ways, they need to know who they are, as made in the image of God. Her beautifully written and illustrated book teaches that their worth is beyond price, and that they can meet any challenges they will face with God's help. It's an especially important gift for the little 4- to 8-year old girl in your life, but I bought it for my daughters, who are older. My third recommendation is a bit self-serving... “A Practical Guide to Culture: Helping the Next Generation Navigate Today's World,” which I co-authored with Brett Kunkle, is an ideal resource for parents, grandparents, teachers, and youth pastors who are in the cultural deep end with their kids. The book unpacks the major issues in our culture, from the obvious ones like LGBT issues, social media, drugs, and smartphones, to the unseen undercurrents in our culture that parents often miss, such as identity struggles and the overwhelming amount of information students face today. The best part is that “A Practical Guide to Culture” is exactly that: practical. In fact, it's proven especially helpful for grandparents, believe it or not. There's always been a generation gap, but many sense that the gap is more vast today – especially when it comes to technology, sexuality, and politics. We hear consistently from parents and grandparents that “A Practical Guide” has helped them make sense of the culture their kids face, so that they can connect with the students in their life and help them to navigate the tricky cultural waters. And speaking of students and culture, I'm pleased to announce that on January 1, a student edition of “A Practical Guide to Culture, called A Student's Guide to Culture,” will be released. This book is written directly for junior high and high school students, and covers the same crucial issues in our culture from a Christian worldview. It's not yet released but is available for pre-order. Why not give a great book this Christmas? You can find these books at our online bookstore. Whenever you purchase books at our online store, it benefits the ministry of the Colson Center.

The worldview divide between biblical Christians and the rest of society, whether secular or religious, has never been wider. Yet our “commission” remains the same—to “make disciples” of Jesus Christ (Matt. 28:19-20 [Open in Logos Bible Software (if available)] ). Before someone becomes a disciple, they must first “repent and believe in the gospel.” To get to that point of regeneration, God will likely use a conversation or many conversations with a Christian. Navigating conversations with non-believers is many things: tricky, exciting, anxiety-inducing, frustrating, and sharpening. Above all it's the believer's calling. 1 Peter 3:15 [Open in Logos Bible Software (if available)] says, “…sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence.” 1 Peter 3:15 [Open in Logos Bible Software (if available)] This weekend on The Christian Worldview, Greg Koukl, president of Stand to Reason and author of Tactics: A Game Plan for Discussing Your Christian Convictions, joins us to discuss...

How can you go about finding your path and doing what you love? Perhaps it is not by working harder, but instead you should do what you love even if you see no path to money. In 18 Minutes author Peter Bregman explains that we often find something new when we stop looking so hard. Think about it. Do you know someone who wanted to get married, but only found a spouse when they gave up? What about that guy looking for the perfect job who spent hours per day looking and only found the job when he relaxed? We often find the result we are looking for when we stop pushing for the what and enjoy the now. What am I saying? Stop trying so hard. Have fun. Do what you love even if you see no path to money. Today I will interview the person who found his path by just doing what he loved. Something I love - My Reading List Click to Listen Finding your path and doing what you love I met Jeff Brown at a conference. He is a fellow podcaster who does Read to Lead. In this interview you will hear his story of getting fired, doing something for fun, and finding a career in his joy. Yes, he is the example of someone who demonstrates "finding your path and doing what you love." You may be a reader more than a listener, but today I think you need to listen as well as read. Jeff will share with us... His path from career to entrepreneurship Why you should start something just for FUN Why you should always be looking for ways to serve others And of course, why you should Read to Lead. Jeff quit reading after college (Gee -anyone who is reading textbooks is bound to be turned off from reading!) but started again when he picked up a book by Seth Godin. [Tweet "Happiness: Finding your path and doing what you love."] What am I Reading Jeff's guiding principle is "Leaders are Readers." I have found this to be VERY true. When I meet people or speak to groups, I often ask what they are reading. The entrepreneurs and executives always have a massive reading list and push me to Amazon to make some quick buys of the books they recommend. They also jump on the books I mention that they have not read. [Tweet "Leaders are Readers"] However, those who are not the leaders (just doing a job and getting by) often tell me they do not read. "I quit reading after college." Here are the books I am reading now: Bold: How to Go Big, Create Wealth and Impact the World - Anyone in the world of technology REALLY needs to read this. 18 Minutes: Find Your Focus, Master Distraction, and Get the Right Things Done - Clarity - what else can I say. Tactics: A Game Plan for Discussing Your Christian Convictions - While I started reading this about issues of faith, it is really helpful in seeing how to discuss topics with people who just like to argue without reason. The Entrepreneur's Trap: How to Stop Working Too Much, Take Back Your Time and Enjoy Life - Great for even the NON-Entrepreneur How to Become a Reader If you are not a reader and want to start, here are some simple steps. Check out my reading list for the new Entrepreneur (If you are not an entrepreneur, forget the title. The books still apply and I can tell you later why I think you are an entrepreneur.) Remember, audible counts. You can download the apps to your phone and have a book on the go. I often add books to my READING LIST. I prefer books with short chapters and basic points - so my reading usually will fit anyone. Listen to someone who reviews books. Hmmm - perhaps the Read to Lead podcast by Jeff. Learn to skim. In this episode, I talk about Greg Koukl's technique: "trotting out the toddler." We established in the last episode that there isn't a morally significant difference between a pre-born and a born human being. That means that any reason we give to justify abortion, i.e. the killing of a pre-born human being, must also be able to justify killing a born human being. Vice versa, if its a bad reason to kill a born human being, then its a bad reason to kill a pre-born human being. I'm dropping Greg Koukl's book Tactics here in the show notes again. In this episode, I cover the SLED framework from Greg Koukl. SLED is an acronym that stands for Size, Level of Development, Environment, and Degree of Dependency. These are the four categories of differences between a pre-born and a born human being. But none of these categories are morally significant: if they would justifying killing a pre-born human being, they would also justify killing a born one.
