Voices from Lincoln Street: An Experiment in Reverse Tourism (abridged version) There's been a cruise boom in Sitka Alaska, with more people coming to the island community than ever before. To feel a bit more connection to the people filling the town, Sitka Tells Tales set up on the street to talk with tourists about where they'd take a visitor in their home communities and to ask for stories of turning points and things they don't always share. It's an experiment, it's audio therapy, and it's funny and surprising in places. Produced by Ellen Frankenstein & Becky Meiers Edited by Ellen Frankenstein Sound Mix/Design/Additional Editing Dave Emmert Music by Lincoln street buskers including Ted Howard & Rick Fleischman , Pointy and the Birds, John Ingman and Bryan O'Callaghan. It should be simple. You fly out, drop a basket and bring these guys home. That's every pilots mission when he lifts his helo into the air. But storms so violent they send fear down your spine and memories of friends in the exact same place as you, memories of those friends never coming home, sink their teeth in and refuse to let go. So when a rescue becomes special, when there's a twist or two and you swear there were higher forces guiding you along, you don't take that for granted. Welcome to Tragedy with a View, when luck against Mother Nature is fought with a Machine. Veteran owned coffee brand, Altruistic Joe, seemed like a no-brainer to invite onto the podcast. Little did I know, Jamie and Libby Jenks have way more going on than just yummy coffee. Jamie served in the coast guard, in the search and rescue department. His education was in entrepreneurship and no surprise after a few tours and moves around the country he opened a few businesses. Operating with an extreme attention to detail, he opened up a hot spot restaurant in Sitka Alaska, imagine that! After the Military, the couple asked themselves what was next. They always knew that they wanted to have a charitable component to what they do. Jamie and Libby work with small family farmers and are huge contributors (20% profits) to charity. I'm excited to share their mission and some fantastic coffee tips too! The top takeaways from the conversation:[1:46] I wanted to serve in some capacity and search and rescue was a cool way of doing it[5:48] Attention to detail was always there[7:08] We really wanted to have something to feed the soul and have a charitable nexus to it[22:43] Giving back charity we were passionate about, and also opening up the doors to people to contact us Connect with Jamie:Altruistic Joehttps://www.altruisticjoe.com/https://www.instagram.com/altruisticjoe/Charity Navigatorhttps://www.charitynavigator.org/

Jon tells his adventure of traveling to Sitka, Alaska for his Dad's sixtieth birthday. The only thing he and Jenn knew about Sitka before going was that it was in "The Proposal" starring Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock. It turns out that the Paxton family is not a real family. It also turns out that if you call Alaska "the final frontier" instead of "the last frontier", you will be mocked forever. Heads up, Alaska has a lot of bugs! But it also has amazing views, animals everywhere and some of the best fishing you can find. Jon came back with over ninety pounds of fish! Three days on the boat was enough for him. He must have not felt great because all he did was share a bottle of Josh wine every night. On a guys trip, he usually would do much more!! Follow us on Instagram @OurSavingsStartsTomorrow. Thanks for all the great reviews!!!
