Dan Smalley may just now be making a name for himself, but he sings with the voice of experience. The Alaska born military brat who came of age in Shreveport, Louisiana, has a way of making you believe what he's singing. Smalley expresses a fresh take on Country music that knows tradition, inspired by the greats of the genre and infused with the swampy sounds of his roots, the Gospel of hardwood church pews and the impassioned delivery of Soul music. Artists like Merle Haggard, Ray Charles, Waylon Jennings, Al Green, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, and other legends provided inspiration, while the against-the-grain success of Chris Stapleton, Jason Isbell and Sturgill Simpson drew him to Nashville. There, he worked with producer Keith Stegall on his Debut EP IF I'M BEING HONEST which came out in 2020 in the midst of a global pandemic. From there Smalley navigated in and out of Major Record deals and honed his direction after producing his first Full-Length Record THE STATE OF COUNTRY MUSIC, set to release Independently(Smallside Records) through Onerpm May 10, 2024. As a songwriter, artists like Ashley McBryde(Grammy Nominated album “Never Will”) Trace Adkins, Randall King, Jerrod Nieman, Makayla Lynn, Dillon Carmichael and others have included Smalley co-writes on their recent releases. Dan's delivery on stage has landed him on bills alongside Willie Nelson, Allison Kraus, Turnpike Troubadours, Ashley McBryde, Tim McGraw, Carrie Underwood, Eli Young Band, Justin Moore, Dwight Yoakam, Randy Rogers Band, Ryan Bingham and a list of notable others both in the US and abroad. Smalley has played some of the greatest festivals in the world(Faster Horses, Country Fest, Frank Brown Songwriter, Nashville Nights International Songwriter Festival)and is making his “Buckle and Boots”(Manchester) Debut in May 2024 as well as his Heartland Fest(Denmark) Debut in June of 2024 after his most recent UK/DK Spring Tour through Glasgow, Belfast, England and Denmark. Texas Country Artist William Beckmann is this week's guest. If you're not familiar with his music, you're about to be. It's not going to be too long before he's well-known all over the country. He and I dive into the evolution of Texas Country Music and how different artists have shaped the genre over the years. We talk about the unique appeal of Texas Country Music, and highlight the abundance of talented songwriters and the diverse fanbase that spans the vast geography of the state. In this episode:Songwriting advice and challengesWriting a hundred songsStorytelling in songwritingLonging for childhood dreamsLearning Spanish and PerformingCoping with life on the roadPlaying a concert in MexicoAbout William:Hailing from the small border town of Del Rio, TX, William Beckmann was raised on classic country as well as the mariachi and Norteño sounds of northern Mexico. He delivers a fresh blend of vintage country, Americana and Latin music with a timeless baritone and an old soul maturity that belies his youth. His new album Faded Memories released in 2022, featuring the slow-burn single “Bourbon Whiskey” as well as a mesmerizing cover of Bruce Springsteen's “I'm On Fire” and the haunting “In The Dark.” The album has garnered praise from critics including American Songwriter, Billboard, CMT and more, and his current track “Damn This Heart Of Mine” is Beckmann's fourth consecutive single to hit the Top 20 at Texas Regional Radio Chart. Beckmann has amassed an incredible fanbase, independently garnering more 670,000 followers on TikTok and over 2 million streams of Faded Memories. He has spent the last year touring with artists including Parker McCollum, Koe Wetzel, Randy Rogers Band and Wade Bowen and sold out three shows at legendary Gruene Hall in New Braunfels, TX in 2022.https://williambeckmann.comwww.GaryScottThomas.com
Let's start here. Cody Canada—our latest guest on The Load Out Music Podcast—is many things but he is most certainly not some radio DJ in Canada, in the event you were curious. No, he's a pioneering figure in red dirt music and one of the more respected musicians in songwriting circles today. But many casual music fans might be unfamiliar with his name, instead knowing his work from the legendary band that he founded and led from 1994 – 2010: Cross Canadian Ragweed. For those unfamiliar with red dirt music, it's a genre stuck between country and rock-and-roll named for the color of the Oklahoma soil. It has featured acts such as Jason Boland & the Stragglers, Stoney Larue, Charlie Robison, the Turnpike Troubadours, and the Randy Rogers Band—but has also extended to the likes of Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Steve Earle, Ray Wylie Hubbard and those who have built the Texas country-rock scene. Canada got hooked on music when he attended a George Strait show while living in Texas as a kid. The next day he asked his parents for a guitar and it was on. In his teen years, Canada was insulated, a loner, he freely admits he didn't have many friends. His family then relocated to Yukon, Oklahoma, and his obsession with the regional outlaw country music and the Seattle sounds of Nirvana and Pearl Jam only deepened. Music became his thing—his only thing—and in 1994, Canada put together a band with Matt Weidemann (bass), Grady Cross (guitar), and Randy Ragsdale (percussion). Cross Canadian Ragweed was born and one of their first gigs was playing a on a glorious trailer on “Czech Day” in Yukon—where they played for six hours. The band would move to Stillwater, Oklahoma, and in 1998 put out its first album, Carney. But it wasn't until Ragweed's 2002 self-titled album featuring Canada's song “17” that the band broke through. Then things really went next level in 2004 with the album Soul Gravy. It debuted at number five on Billboard's country charts—despite Canada wanting to be as far from Nashville country as he possibly can to this day—and featured the hit songs “Sick and Tired” with Lee Ann Womack and “Alabama.” But like happens in most bands, tensions rose in Ragweed—a topic Canada does not shy away from—and the band dissolved in 2010. In 2011, Canada and bassist Jeremy Plato formed Cody Canada & the Departed, releasing the album This Is Indian Land, a collection of covers written by Oklahoma songwriters. The band ultimately minimized to simply, The Departed, and over the past decade, Canada has moved forward with the band as well as on solo projects, writing music and reaping the rewards of a legacy he's built over 30 years. In 2020, MusicFest, the esteemed festival in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, paid tribute to Canada with live recorded performances from his songwriting peers, releasing the album The Years: A MusicFest Tribute to Cody Canada. Ragweed also released the reboot of “Soul Gravy” in 2022. Womack returned to sing on the new version along with performances from some key musicians who helped shape the original album including Randy Rogers and Ray Wiley Hubbard. And just recently, Canada joined longtime friends Micky and Gary Braun (of Micky and the Motorcars) on the “Acoustic Healing Tour.” All along, in spite of being a pioneer in red dirt music, family remains the bedrock of Canada's life. He and his wife Shannon lead a School of Rock in their hometown of New Braunfels, Texas, where they are raising their children Dierks Cobain Canada (named for friend Kierks Bentley and Nirvana's Kurt Cobain) and Willy Vedder Canada (named for Willy Braun of the band Reckless Kelly and Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder). So, sit back for a great conversation on The Load Out Music Podcast with an incredibly accomplished musician and fascinating character in Cody Canada.

His music combines the depth of a singer-songwriter with a fusion of Rock and Alternative genres, injecting a breath of fresh air into a scene often dominated by Country roots. With a powerful vocal range and a singing style influenced by icons like Chris Cornell, Eddie Vedder, and Layne Staley, Dylan Wheeler stands out as a truly unique and exceptional artist. His music defies categorization, appealing to a wide audience and fueling dreams of success. Currently living his dream, Dylan's future looks promising as he continues to make his mark in the industry. Hailing from Edgewood, Texas, he cut his teeth in small dive bars, following in the footsteps of his East Texas heroes. However, what sets Dylan apart is his ability to cultivate a dedicated fan base even before officially releasing his music.Through social media platforms like Twitter, Dylan garnered fans from all over by sharing acoustic videos of both original songs and covers. One of his videos, a rendition of the 90s country hit "Strawberry Wine," quickly gained over 100,000 views, providing a glimpse of his potential. This early fan base eagerly anticipated the release of his first EP, "Tell Me If I'm Wrong," in late 2018. The songs from this EP accumulated tens of thousands, and later hundreds of thousands, of streams, solidifying Dylan's destiny as a full-time musician. In 2019, Dylan made the life-changing decision to quit his job in the Oil & Gas industry and fully commit himself to music. Embracing this new path, his schedule filled up with bigger and better shows, frequent trips to Nashville for writing and recording, and continuous engagement with his growing fan base. Each new song released showcased his artistic growth, attracting new fans while further captivating his existing supporters.Within just a few years, Dylan's journey has transformed from receiving tens of thousands of views on acoustic videos to amassing tens of millions of streams across major platforms. He has transitioned from playing small dive bars to selling out major venues in his home state and beyond. However, Dylan sees himself as just beginning, believing that the sky's the limit. He delivers a blend of vintage country, Americana and Latin music in a timeless baritone that sounds right at home with country legends well beyond his years. His latest single “Danced All Night Long” is a Latin country love song that's been hailed by American Songwriter and Billboard, who said "The bilingual track highlights his smooth vocal, with nods to George Strait, while breezes of horns and acoustic guitar propel this country waltz.” William has also released several other singles off the new album, including the slow-burn “Bourbon Whiskey,” a mesmerizing cover of Bruce Springsteen's “I'm On Fire” and my personal fave, the haunting “In The Dark,” which was praised by CMT. Folks like Randy Rogers and fellow Del Rio native Radney Foster have already taken notice of William, both mentoring and working with him in various capacities over the last couple years. Ryan Manuel is a singer-songwriter based in Lawrence, Kansas. He got his start playing music in his hometown of Sedalia, Missouri after winning the 2011 MO State Fair Idol competition. He has been playing shows around the Midwest, writing and recording music ever since. Ryan has opened for Whiskey Myers, the Randy Rogers Band, William Clark Green, and many others. Since hitting the Kansas City music scene in 2012, he has released a solo album "Kansas" and his band Ryan Manuel and the Getaway released a full length, self-penned album, “On the Run." Ryan first came to my attention in about 2015 through an introduction by the late Scott Ford who was very instrumental in making me aware of a number of artists in the so called Texas Songwriter and Oklahoma Red Dirt Music Scene. I finally caught a set from Ryan before the pandemic in the summer of 2019 when I was pleasantly surprised to find him on stage when we dropped into the music venue formerly known as Repeal 18th in North Kansas City. Ryan reached out to me to help him get his newest single “Sold” on the radio here in Kansas City. In this conversation we had on a recent show, I was particularly encouraged by his supportive words of the Heartland music scene and willingness to NOT dismiss or write off the small towns and rural communities that deserve to experience live music. Lend your ears to a troubadour from the Heartland, Ryan Manuel.
Listen in as we chop it up with Nashville country songwriter/artist Kenton Bryant on everything from signing publishing deals to chasing and hunting big elk in the mountains and more. Signed to 50 Egg Music, Bryant has written songs for some artists that you may know (Randy Rogers Band, Craig Campbell, etc.) and has some big songs of his own, too. Growing up in Kentucky, Kenton spent his days in the woods & water, hunting deer & turkey, and catching small mouth bass on the river. What we're saying is, Kenton Bryant is most definitely a Gullie. He lives in Nashville now, but Kenton still spends his Days Off doing what he loves most: hunting—whether it be back home in Kentucky searching for whitetail deer or up in the Colorado Mountains stalking big elk in the snow. We should note here that Kenton Bryant has never caught a spotted bass over 3lbs…so that means we have to get him out to AL and show him what a good Spot bite looks like, right?
The Years: A Musicfest Tribute to Cody Canada and the Music of Cross Canadian Ragweed. Y lo hicieron gracias canciones como "I’ll Never Get Over You" que cantaba sobre días más largos y barbacoas encendidas. My Favorite Picture of You.

En realidad era un medley de tres canciones de la Guerra Civil Americana ("Dixie", "The Battle Hymn Of The Republic" y "All My Trials"). Escuchar audio

THE TROUBADOUR PODCAST - The Premier Red Dirt, Texas Country and Independent Music Podcast
I’ve got to be totally honest here: I’m not always familiar with every individual artist and songwriter we have an opportunity to visit with on the podcast. I quit touring over two years ago, and even by that time of my career as an “entertainer” had morphed into mainly playing private parties and small bars in Kansas and Nebraska when the money was right. I wasn’t trying to stay relevant or even keep tabs on which artists were anymore… Let’s just say I wasn’t “up” on most of the new artists in the Red Dirt or Texas Country scene. Frankly, by that time my college days and “good times” were already WAY over. The artists that had shaped my view of Texas Country and Red Dirt like The Great Divide, Cross Canadian Ragweed and Cooder Graw had already all broke up…Pat Green et al were still doing their thing, but their music hit me differently in my late 30’s and as a husband & father than it did when I was a 20 year old college kid. So, when Carly told me we’d be doing an interview with George Ducas I said “Uh… OK.” The name sounded vaguely familiar but I just couldn’t place it so I did what all normal folks do in this day and age: I googled him and BAM!!!! I quickly realized that this was the George Ducas that had a hit song in 1995 called “Lipstick Promises” that I clearly remember singing in the tractor while I was in high school!!!!! Holy smokes did that bring back a quick flood of memories... When I was lucky enough to be in a tractor that had a working radio, it was cranked to a station I could barely pick up from north central KS. I can’t remember the call letters or the frequency but it was called “The Hit Kicker” and was out of Lincoln, NE. That station would play pretty much a constant loop of the top 25 songs on country radio at the time and you could count on songs in the top ten multiple times each day…and so, I was probably raking hay when I got my first taste of George Ducas through “Lipstick Promises”. As I did more research on George’s career, I learned that he had been on the same label as Garth. Well, you can do your own math to figure out who’s gonna get the most attention from the powers that be if you are on the same label as His Garthness. So, George’s career as an artist started to simmer, BUT his career as a songwriter started gaining more steam. Fan’s of the podcast would probably be kinda surprised to find out that George Ducas is the songwriter on several Red Dirt and Texas Country songs including Randy Rogers Band’s “Kiss Me In The Dark”, Eli Young Band’s “Always the Love Songs” AND one of my personal favorites, “Just Call Me Lonesome” that he co-wrote with Radney Foster. George also has co-writing credit on the Garth Brooks and George Jones song “BEER RUN”. We had a good visit over this version of the song compared to Todd Snider’s “BEER RUN” and heard some details about both songs that I don’t think ANYONE has ever heard before this interview. It’s definitely a part of this episode you won’t want to miss. To cut to the chase, George Ducas is back with some new music and a project called “Yellow Rose Motel” which you can check out HERE. I usually have to hear something a couple times to know if I dig it or not….NOT ON THIS PROJECT! I am super impressed with this stuff! Damn good songwriting and production. George is releasing the project in Volumes. Three song groupings have made up Volume 1, 2, and 3 with the final 3 songs coming soon. The first song I heard off this project is called “Eastwood” and is simply a great song IMO. I don’t know what else to say…. I dig the heck out of it and George’s delivery on the song. You’ve GOT to go listen to it! Another song which I’m really loving from the project is called “Country Badass” which is a nice shot taken at the wannabes and cracks me up. Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed our interview with George and I think you’ll find it a good listen. AND THE MUSIC! Please check it out because I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. Johnny “Chops” Richardson lives in Austin, TX with his wife and their two Basset hounds, Reggie and Emmylou. He has been writing and performing music since his uncle gave him a battered acoustic guitar at age 16. Since 2002, Johnny has logged thousands of miles and 8 albums playing bass for The Randy Rogers Band. Several of his tunes have made their way onto the bands albums, and his song “Last Last Chance” garnered a Texas music chart #1. In 2013 he released his first album as a solo artist, Sticks & Stones. Next came the eponymous "Johnny Chops & The Razors" and a second single and video, "Taking A Chance On Me". On tour now, he plays with both bands. Halo Circus is a bilingual alternative electronic rock duo based in Los Angeles, California, composed of vocalist Allison Iraheta and bassist Matthew Hager. Formed in 2012 by Iraheta, a finalist on American Idol, the band began as a rock quartet belting out power songs carried by Iraheta’s huge voice. This year the band evolved into a futuristic electronic rock duo with English and Spanish lyrics laced with heavy social commentary and a way out there sound tht audiences are eating up around the country. The duo’s recent album, Robots and Wranglers has been met with rave reviews and predictions of being an Album of the Year, following three nominations for LA Music Critic Awards. They have just wrapped up a sold-out 30 city tour and are back home in Los Angeles.

On today’s episode of The Troubadour I’ll be visiting with fellow Kansan singer-songwriter and band leader, Lucas Maddy. Just like I did, Lucas really cut his teeth as a live performer and musician in Manhattan, KS during his college years. Even at a relatively young age, Lucas has already lead an interesting life. Along with his accomplishments as a live entertainer, Lucas is also a past student body president of Kansas State University and has a great story of when the Randy Rogers Band stumped for his campaign. In this episode Lucas divulges hows the connections he’s made in life have created opportunities for him to hob-nob with high profile politicians, including U.S. presidents, as well as taking a spin on a mini-bike owned by Red-Dirt music forfather, Mike McClure and the unfortunate crash into Mike’s trailer that followed.
