Season 5, Episode 234 The Evolution of Cool: What We Loved Then and What's Trending Now Nostalgia always finds a way to trend. From bumpin' bass in your trunk to custom AI avatars flooding your feed—what's cool evolves, but the vibe stays the same. Let's take a ride through the decades and catch up on what's hot, what's history, and what's happening right now in pop culture, rodeo, and the wildest wildlife headline you didn't know you needed. From Fax Machines to 3D Cartoon Avatars Then: Remember the days of waiting in line at the office fax machine, praying it didn't jam? Or spending hours crafting a MySpace page with custom HTML? Now: We've moved on to creating 3D cartoon versions of ourselves using AI and ChatGPT to share on TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat. It's not just for kicks—these avatars are now brand mascots, profile pics, and conversation starters. 25 Years Ago: CD Players & Subs in the Trunk In the late '90s and early 2000s, if your ride didn't have a Pioneer deck and a couple of 12-inch subs in the back, were you even cool? Whether it was Tupac, Tim McGraw, or Linkin Park, music hit different when your rearview mirror shook from bass drops. The era of custom installs and trunk-rattling power might be long gone, but the spirit lives on in today's custom car scene and wireless audio obsessions. Rodeo Spotlight: Miles City Bucking Horse Sale & Rodeo – Montana's Wildest 4 Days Miles City, Montana becomes the capital of cowboy culture every May during the World Famous Miles City Bucking Horse Sale & Rodeo—a four-day extravaganza of raw horsepower, western tradition, and all-out fun. Authorities uncovered a treasure trove of over 300 protected species, including eagles and falcons. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service called it "an unprecedented display of arrogance and disregard for federal law." Busted: $900,000 Fine in Largest Taxidermy Bird Sting in U.S. History According to OutdoorLife.com; A Georgia man has been fined a whopping $900,000 in what authorities are calling the largest taxidermy bird bust in U.S. history. Dr. John Waldrop of Cataula, Georgia, was sentenced this week for illegally trafficking thousands of rare and endangered bird mounts and eggs from around the world — including some species possibly extinct. Federal agents say Waldrop smuggled over 1,400 bird mounts and nearly 2,600 eggs between 2016 and 2020, using fake shipping info and even recruiting his farm's caretaker to help hide the shipments. His massive collection included protected eagles, rare parrots, and songbird eggs — many of which didn't have the permits required by law. Some of the birds and eggs were from species so rare, no U.S. museum has them, including three eggs from an Asian shorebird with only around 1,000 left in the wild. Officials say Waldrop created demand that fueled illegal poaching across Africa, Asia, and South America. Waldrop pled guilty, was fined $900,000 and will serve three years of probation. His caretaker got six months. Authorities say the case shows just how seriously wildlife trafficking is being taken — and how much it can cost when the law is broken. In this episode, I sit down with @Matt Warren! From frat parties in a Chevy van to selling T-shirts for @Gary Allan, Matt's Nashville come-up is anything but boring. He was waiting tables at Chili's when a chance encounter with George Strait's guitar techs kickstarted his songwriting journey—and he's been chasing it ever since. We talk about writing hits like “Every Storm (Runs Out of Rain)” and “Learning How to Bend,” getting fired (in a positive way), and the tough battle with addiction that almost took it all. Now 24 years in, Matt reflects on the wild ride, the heartbreak, and the songs that changed everything. You're gonna want to hear this one.SHOW NOTES:Keep up with Guest- Stay up to date with fresh podcast episodes and Listening Room show dates:Listen/Subscribe/Follow - HERESBTSongs TikTok - @sbtsongsSBTSongs Instagram - @sbtsongsSBTSongs YouTube - @sbtsongsChris Blair's Instagram - @chrisblairmusicChris Blair's Website - HEREThe Listening Room's Website - HERETLR's Instagram - @listeningroomcafeTLR's TikTok - @thelisteningroomcafeA special shout out to our sponsorsSennheiser - https://www.sennheiser.com/en-usAlclair In-Ear Monitors - https://alclair.com/

Savanna, daughter of the Heartland's Flint Hills, returns to share with me new music making its radio debut on my turn as host of MidCoast Live! On KKFI…a weekly live performance radio show that welcomes all genres of music and spoken word performance. On this episode you will hear these new bona fide country music selections: L-O-V-E Same Beer, Different Day Honky Tonk Heartbreaker Trailer No.3 In our latest conversation, we re-visit how I first discovered Savanna's songcraft. It is alive with visual imagery indigenous to the Heartland and illustrative of a path a young generative artist like Savanna navigates every day in an industry…in a world not always kind or supportive of a woman flying solo or fronting a band. Her love for performing started in her grandparent's “Sodie Bar” on karaoke night when she was a little girl and has since taken her all across the country. From dive bars, fairs, festivals and rodeos, to season 20 of The Voice on NBC where she was chosen by Blake Shelton, Savanna has won over audiences with her unique, yet nostalgic country style. Savanna has won multiple songwriting contests and has been nominated 4 times for Female Vocalist of the Year at the Rocky Mountain Country music awards. She has shared the stage with acts such as Gary Allan, Sara Evans, Justin Moore, Eli Young Band, Reckless Kelly, Granger Smith, Tanya Tucker, Jason Boland, Ned Ledoux and many others. She has 3 studio albums of original music available on all streaming platforms. To quote Savanna "Country music has always been my shoulder to lean on, no matter what. I can always relate to it, and always rely on it. That's how I want my songs to be for others. Just honest, genuine, country music." Enjoy my conversation with and musical performance by Savanna Chestnut!

I'm so excited to have my good buddy Brian White on this week's episode of the Stories Behind the Songs podcast! Brian White's career in music has spanned over many decades and many genres - he got his start in Christian and gospel music and toured for about 15 years doing that. He eventually fell in love with the storytelling of country music and has become a true legend here in Music City. Brian not only has plenty of hits to his name, but he's written more than a few country classics as well. Some of my personal favorite cuts of his that we cover in this episode are “Watching You” released by Rodney Atkins, “Blame It On You” by Jason Aldean and “Roll On Mississippi” by Charley Pride. He also has cuts with Rascal Flatts, Trace Adkins, and Gary Allan and Christian cuts like “Holding Out Hope To You” released by Michael English and “The Promise” by The Martins. In this episode, Brian and I also talk about the difference between CCM and country songwriting, starting out as a youth pastor following God's calling for his life, and, as usual, the stories behind the songs! I've wanted to have Brian on the podcast for a longtime - in a lot of ways, he is a big reason that The Listening Room is where it is today. He was the one who organized the fundraiser in the early days when we were struggling that was a turning point for us and in turn also played a role in inspiring our "Sound Good. Do Good." program that gives back to non-profits every month. If you enjoyed this episode, make sure to share it with your friends and give us a follow. It's our mission to share the Stories Behind the Songs and highlight the songwriters behind the stories, and it's because of listeners like YOU that we are able to do it. In Lee's own words: I was born and raised in Concord, NC. Just Northeast of Charlottle, it was a town of 25,000 back then. As long as I can remember, music was around. Whether it be the turntables or 8 tracks; where my older brothers played rock and roll of the 60s & 70s, Dad listened to older country artists or Mom's Pontiac Bonneville, which seemed to always have the hits playing through it's car stereo from either 61AM Big Ways, 95FM WROQ or 1100 WBT-AM…Music was always a comforting companion. Not coming from a particularly musical family other than them playing the radio, the drum bug came from the next door neighbor playing and then taking it from there. I was playing with records by 8-9 years old; began school band in 7th grade with the natural progression through high school playing in marching, jazz and symphonic bands throughout. Since music was not viewed in my family as something you pursued as a career, I studied English Literature & Writing at Pfeiffer University until my senior year in 1990-91 when long time friend and a musical mentor, Rick Lee, called and said, "I'm forming a new band and you're the drummer." This was the beginnings of my music career and the 2019 Carolina Beach Music Hall Of Fame band, Too Much Sylvia. After leaving TMS in 1994, I played with a few different bands out of Charlotte and all around the East Coast through 1996. In September 1996, a weeklong trip to Nashville, TN put the hook in and I moved to Music City on January 11, 1997. Fortunately, I got club and road work pretty quickly while learning constantly along the way. The idea was to make a living while seeing the world and that plan came to fruition over the years backing artists like Gary Allan, Mark Chesnutt, Heidi Newfield, Kelly Pickler, Loverboy, Kendell Marvel and, now, Hank Williams Jr. Also, to be able to play and share time with some of the finest musicians & people along the way has just been magic. It's a ride I can't get off of...Nor do I want to. Along with time on the road with Hank Jr., I offer drum/percussion tracks to any clients out of the "Boom Boom Drum Room", do club/showcase/session work around town and spend time caring for my family. It's never boring and music is STILL a comforting companion. Hope to see y'all at a show sometime!!
