A collection of this week's Witness History programmes, presented by Max Pearson. The guest is Nicholas Smith, author of "Kicks: The Great American Story of Sneakers" and Presenter of the BBC's "Sneakernomics" podcast. He explains how footwear revolutionised sport and became high-fashion. In 1948, two brothers from a small German town called Rudi and Adi Dassler created the sportswear firms Puma and Adidas. Reena Stanton-Sharma hears from Adi Dassler's daughter, Sigi Dassler, who remembers her father's obsession with footwear and talks about her fondness for the rappers, Run-DMC, who paid tribute to her dad's shoes in a song. We also hear about one man's mission to castrate Pablo Escobar's hippos, the unpredictable rule of Kenya's former President, Jomo Kenyatta, the 'Japanese Schindler', and the raising of the 400-year-old Mary Rose. Sneakernomics is a close encounter with the visionaries, artisans and journeymen who've made, and been made, by trainers. We'll follow in the footsteps of mavericks, hustlers and dreamers, and hear their tales of boom and bust, fame and infamy, hope and heartbreak. Across nine episodes, Sneakernomics tells the extraordinary origin stories of some of the world's biggest brands, and how sponsorship deals and celebrity culture redefined our relationship with products. It's also a business story – how leisure has evolved into a multi-billion dollar industry; a sports story – how games became organised and grew into a global spectacle; and it's a story of invention – how enthusiastic hobbyist-pioneers often took extraordinary risks that changed the course of sport and fashion. The sneaker story is characterised by fierce competition and rivalry. We explore how the quest to be number one tore families and friendships apart and divided towns. Above all, this is the story of the people behind the shoes. What you'll hear is a mix of interviews with many of the key individuals who've played their part in that extraordinary story, interlaced with moments of fiction inspired by their testimonies and our research. Written and presented by Nicholas Smith, with 1Xtra presenter Ace. The drama is written by Al Smith. Episode 9 Cast: Rob . . . . . Wilf Scolding Phil . . . . . Trevor White Waitress . . . . . Our first foray into speaking our minds, Masses Podcast presents a more millennial focused perspective towards areas that make up the culture, otherwise known as sneakers, fashion, and all things in trend. Or at least, try to. Three shows make up the podcast: From The Thread, Sneakernomics, and Cool Story Bro. From The Thread encapsulates all there is to say about fashion, spreading from international news, all the way to microscoping on the local nit bits. Sneakernomics presents the business behind the shoes, or more specifically, a reseller's perspective on shoes. Get to know the latest insights, the stories behind the scene, as well as what to cop, and what to drop. Cool Story Bro? We recognise that the saying's dead, long gone 6 feet under back in 2011, but what the hell. CSB brings to you everything else that's not covered by the first two, encompassing all the juicy gossips, trends, events, and people of interest that's happening right here, right now. Now that you've made it this far, the podcast will be out every Tuesdays and Thursdays, one episode per day, so make sure to stay tune and be in the know with all things local!

Should you incorporate if you are taking on freelance or contract work? In this episode of Halftime, Adam discusses the benefits of setting up an LLC to freelance and touches on the differences between LLCs, Partnerships, S-Corporations and C-Corporations. There are some complex topics discussed in this episode and of course, Adam isn't an accountant or attorney so you will definitely want to consult with one for legal advice. However, this episode may help you figure out ahead of time what questions you need to ask to that legal consultant or at least not appear ignorant to business structures as you pursue entrepreneurship. "I've interviewed at sports places and I've gotten the vibe, 'you're gonna get used up a little bit here but you're gonna put up with it because you want to be able to say that you work here.' That's never been appealing to me. Nobody is going to sell me on that...I value my freetime...I don't want to be taken advantage of." This week the mega-talented Bethany Heck joins the podcast to talk about her independent project, The Eephus League; a website geared towards passionate baseball fans with an appreciation for aesthetics and minutiae of "America's pastime". Most recently, Bethany was a product designer at IBM's Mobile Innovation Lab in Austin, TX before taking a gig with Microsoft in Seattle as a creative lead on one of their products. Bethany, a die-hard Auburn Tigers fan and alumnae, founded The Eephus League while attending college for a senior project and the brand eventually grew into a Kickstarter campaign that successfully raised nearly $30,000 for a beautifully designed and printed score book called the Halfliner which can purchased here. Other topics we discuss include designing websites in InDesign versus Photoshop, and we touch on Bethany's recent Medium article discussing junior designer salaries, a designer's value and their career; all topics Bethany is extremely passionate about.
